About the author---- Charles Dickens He was one of the greatest novelist in English literature. Born of a poor clerk’s family, he had little schooling. When he was ten, his father was put into prison because of being unable to pay his debts, and Charles Dickens , being the eldest son, had to earn a salary of six shillings a week in the blacking factory. In 1834, at sixteen, he started working for a newspaper and thus began his life work of writing . His first novel The Pickwick Papers got published, He poured out novel after novel. “Oliver Twist” The Old Curiosity Shop. David Copperfield Hard Times A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations These are generally regarded as his masterpiece and have been translated into many languages. They have been also translated into Chinese and become favorite books of Chinese readers.

• This is a story about what a revolutionary did in the 1789 French Revolution. One morning he got into a castle by hiding in a farmer’s cart. As it was not yet light, it was easy for him to stay hiddenThen he waited by the kitchen door till a servant came to fetch some wood. The man spoke to her and persuaded her to let him in. She was a brave woman. She knew that the revolution was for the poor and that the man was not an enemy of hers. She helpedhim light a fire that could be seen for many miles.
Our present text is adopted from a chapter of Dickens”A Tale of Two Cities” It was a novel completed in 1859 The “two cities” refers to Paris the scene of the story and London, where the hero of the novel spent his remaining time
