专八写作背诵范文选(新东方内部资料)

英专八级写作背诵范文选(新东方内部资料)1.On Open PolicyThe open policy means that our country is open to investment, trade and technical and economic cooperation with other countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. The purpose of open policy is to acquire advanced technology, management skills to serve our socialist construction so as to promote the realization of the four modernizations. We must adhere to the open policy. Because economic relations between states today have become increasingly close, and no country can possibly advance behind close doors. Only in this way, can we gradually close the gap between our country and the developed countries.Through the implementation of policy, we can learn advanced technology and managerial expertise from abroad; make full use of the foreign capitals to set up great enterprises; absorb useful and healthy ideas and new knowledge of the modern civilization; and broaden our views and raise our level of competence.2. The place of Science and Technology in Modern Life.Human life can not continue without science and technology. For many years, human society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the development of science and technology has in turn brought the process to mankind. So the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our fore fathers. The development of science and technology have brought about many changes in people's life. For example, the invention of television and space rocket have opened a new era for mankind. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away.Owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man's landing on the moon has now come true.Science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. Without the base, the skyscraper can't be built. Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.3. Importance of EducationChina, as a developing country, is determined to catch up with and even surpass the developed ones. I think that one of the best possible ways to do so is to give first priority(优先)to the development of culture, science and especially education. In modern times, when science and technology are making great progress, the education of the work force is of primary importance. Moreover, many of the success in advanced countries have demonstrated that a nation 's prosperity mainly depends on the quality of its labour force, namely those who have been well educated. In a developing country such as China, our investment in culture, education and science, and especially elementary education, must enjoy top priority. This is crucial(决定性的)for China to catch up with the developed nations in today's surging(汹涌的) waves of technological revolution. Otherwise, the gap between China and advanced countries will be widened rather than bridged.4. Air PollutionAir pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world. A great deal of energy is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. Automobile, trains, planes and busses need energy, too. Nearly all of this energy is produced by burning fuels. The burning produces wastes, some of which remain in the air, causing air pollution.Scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution especially in big industrial areas and densely-populated cities. They are studying new ways of generating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. In the meantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less polluted material. Also, engineers try to design and locate new power plants to do minimum damage to the environment. However, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have a "clean" world. Nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and control air pollution. There indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalists will be required to do. People will continually find new ways to control pollution.5. Environmental ProtectionToday the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive.Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存)our natural resources and recycle(再循环)our products. We are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future.6. AutomobilesAutomobiles, as a product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. Industry needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation. Every day, automobiles drive people to and from work. On weekends automobiles take families for joyful outings. And during holiday seasons, automobiles fill the highways everywhere, even in remote areas. It could be said that the wheels of automobiles move society forward. But automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. For example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. They create a lot of noise and traffic accidents which disable(伤残)or kill many people each year. Worst of all perhaps is the air pollution caused by the exhaust gases produced by automobiles. Some of the gases are highly toxic(有毒的)and a serious health hazard.7. ComputerThe computer is widely used in all fields of society. Today, wherever you go, you will find computers being used. For example, computers are used in universities, large corporations, and small offices, etc. It has even entered the homes of ordinary people. As it is able to store and process a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life.Computers can help people in different ways. For example, computer help scientists in analyzing data and doing complex calculation. For another example, computers are made use of by engineers in designing a plane, or a spaceship. Besides, computers may also play a great role in helping children with their lesson. Whatever you are doing, you many find computer a useful aid. However, the computer must be designed and instructed by man. What is more, it is true that computers can make decisions, but they need detailed instructions and programs prepared by humans to operate. Therefore, the computer can never replace the human brain.8. TravellingIt is exciting to visit different places. As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of travelling that tourism has become one of the faster growing industries in most countries. The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday travelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder.Travelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may have read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is believing. Furthermore, if you area careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through travelling. The knowledge acquired from travel, as you will have found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book.9. The World Population ExplosionThe human race has experienced a consistent increase in population since the beginning of its history. Famine and disease have done little to offset(抵消)this steady increase. Too many people are added annually to the population of the world. So both the causes of population increase andthe results of having more people are worth careful study.Culture evolution is the major factor responsible for population increase. Early in human development, people invented tools to hunt animals. Later they built shelters to protect themselves. Step by step, they made life easier. As a result, fewer died from natural forces, such as harsh climate and disease. In the past, when population grew, there was unexplored territory to inhabit. But now, almost all the habitable land has been explored. The world's population may reach 8.7 billion in 2033. It is clear that world population is a serious issue that needs careful attention. Human beings are unique to solve problems through cultural evolution.(发展)Facing the world population explosion in the near future. We must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world.10. Opening-door Policy is the Only Way to Make China StrongModern Chinese history leads us to the conclusion that socialism, not capitalism is best for China. But how a socialist China should look at capitalism and more importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is of vital(至关)importance to the country. As far as our country's economic construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of capitalism that is useful to us means we need to develop foreign trade, introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign funds. It also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with(遵循)the law of mass production and a commodity economy.By opening our windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples and learn to make sensible judgments. Absorbing the better part of the cultures of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist culture. So taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is the only way to make China strong. Closing the county to international exchanges will only keep it weak.11. Choosing an OccupationEvery one faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his life. An appropriate occupation makes a man work with zest(热情)and vigor, as well as contribute to his country. To make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. One is the interest, the other, the demands of people and society. Only if the two aspects are connected, can a man show his talent and ability to the best advantage. If the two conflict, the former should be under the latter, for the people's interests are more important than the individual's.In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the Open-Door Policy, exchange between home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.12. The Brain and the ComputerSome recent developments in the computer industry make scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 20000.To understand the significance of this prediction let us compare the human brain with existing computers. The brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. The brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. Every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. As a result, the cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells. However, the computer consumes 1000,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. Its million items of immediately accessible information. In contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere. In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains.13. Health and LifeAs the saying goes, you don‟t know what happiness is until you lose it‟ you don‟t know what health is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true. The negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee ofhealth. How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. First, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body.14. Energy ResourcesChina is rich in various energy resources. Coal and petroleum, for instance, are two major ones. They are essential in developing the country's industry, science and technology. China has done a great deal in the past few decades to raise its output of coal and petroleum.Three energy resources are being used up rapidly, With the building of four modernization, new industrial and science projects are springing up like bamboo shoots after rain. They are all big consumers of energy resources. Besides there has been considerable waste in the utilization of these resources. To avoid an energy crisis in the future, the government must take certain measures. First, it should let people know the importance of saving energy. Second, efforts should be made to develop new energy resources, such as solar energy, geothermal(地热)energy and so on. We have reason to be optimistic in this respect.15. CompetitionCompetition makes people original and creative. It very necessary to compete if human society wants to advance. (Even animals compete for survival.) Without it, we would become lazy and nobody would rake any responsibility. When three monks live together, there will be no drinking water. This Chinese proverb vividly describes why China's productivity was so low before Mr Deng came to power. At that time, we had the so-called planned economy. There was no competition at all. So neither farmers nor workers worked hard. China was on the edge of collapse. Competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. For example, in 100-meter race, each sportsman runs as quickly as possible, trying to win the champion. The same things happen in our society and in our daily life. If a company wants to surpass others, it must compete withthem. It must raise its efficiency. All the companies doing this will no doubt benefit the whole society and the whole human race.Being a student, I must compete with other students in our studies. I must study hard in all the fields so that I can be a useful man when I enter the society after graduation.16.Students‟ Part-time jobsThere are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can‟t be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students‟ study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca …t focus their attention on studying. In the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies. In my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. The most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it.17.Wealth and HappinessEverybody wants to get wealth. In today‟s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person‟s success an d capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can but nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you‟ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.18.IdealsEveryone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better. And everyone strives, with more or less effort, to realize his ideal. One should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in one form or another. My ideal is to become a doctor, It is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving peop le‟s lives. To realize my ideal I have concentrated on laboratory work to develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. I am sure I will realize my ideal if I persevere in this pursuit.19.Popular Sports in ChinaSports are flourishing in china now. More and more people are willing to take part in sports of different kinds, such as table-tennis, football, volleyball, and so on. Every year there are many matches played on the city, provincial or national level. Sports are no longer limited to a few professional players.Early in the morning people may be seen doing exercise. Martial arts (like Chinese boxing or swordplay) which formerly were cultivated for self-defense, now have become a form of physical exercise and are practiced in parks, streets, gardens, or on campuses. In addition young and old people are also often seen running in order to build up their bodies.China promotes sports to enhance the physical condition of its people; she is formulating policies to provide encouragement of this activity. She awards prizes to the excellent players for the best records both in china and the world. In the world the Chinese have become a strong people instead of “the weaklings of East Asia”.20.Is Failure a Bad Thing?Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions.Although failure happens to e veryone, attitudes towards failure are various. Some people don‟tthink their failure is a very important thing at all. So they pay no attention to it. As a result, they will have the same failure a period later. Some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.Other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. After hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. Success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures. In my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.21.Modernization of Family LifeWith the rapid development of the society, family life is becoming modernized. Years ago, people considered owing radios, sewing machines, watches and bicycles as being modernized. But in recent years, almost all families have TV sets, refrigerators and washing machines. It is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephones, computers and air-conditioners.The modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort. One may enjoy TV or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioners are running. And by car or motorcycle one can quickly reach wherever he wants to go.In spite of this, these modern facilities also bring us disadvantages. For example, radiation from TV sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. The quietness of a family is often disturbed by a falsedialing or unwelcome phone call. But it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable.。

Should Traditional Chinese Etiquette Be Taught in Class? (424字)Throughout most of China’s long history, the relationships between people were based on carefully prescribed forms of behavior, that is, etiquette. Learning and following etiquette is so important that people are always judged by how closely they follow these rules of behaviors. For those who do not follow those prescribed rules of conduct, they are regarded as uncivilized barbarians. However, as China has been increasingly entangled in the global village, many Chinese people, especially the young, have lost some traditions because of the influences of Western cultures. According to a famous professor, the majority of Chinese college students have not had systematic training on traditional Chinese etiquette. As for me, traditional etiquette should be taught in class.Firstly, if college students can receive a systematic education in traditional etiquette in class, they can get more prepared for the future. As is known, college students usually have learnt some traditional etiquette through daily interaction with friends and relatives, but the process is time-consuming. They have to be sensitive enough to observe other people’s behaviors and then know what proper behaviors in different social situations are. Sometimes the learning process is by trial and error. They can only form right behaviors after breaking the rules of conduct and being corrected by the costly consequence. If they have already taken a systematic etiquette course in college, they can follow proper etiquette and have a more guaranteed future.Secondly, as these meticulous rules of conduct have been formed throughout Chinese history, they are unique Chinese characteristics and are inseparable to Chinese culture. With the advent of globalization, western culture is so influential that many young people often look to Western customs and etiquette as being fashionable. For example, nowadays most young women in China would like to wear western-style white dresses and veils at wedding while traditional Chinese weddings feature red gowns for brides and white is an absolute taboo. In the long term, if the trend to adopt western etiquette can not be curbed, the Chinese generations in the future will lose their cultural identity.Furthermore, the extinction of Chinese etiquette will be to the detriment of the diversity of global culture. To some extent, the course can serve to arouse college students’ cultural pride and help to preserve and further develop Chinese culture. In conclusion, taking traditional Chinese etiquette in college will not only make graduates more prepared for their future, but also can constitute an important measure for college students to form Chinese cultural identity and therefore to preserve Chinese tradition and further develop it.2. Are Nowadays College Graduates Not as Competent as Before?(418字)As an economic rule goes, when supply outweighs demand, the price decreases. The same seems true for the current situation for college graduates. Since 1999, the central government has implemented the Grand College Enrollment Plan, with the total number of college graduates on the increase in the following years. But the boomed economy does not provide enough jobs for those graduates coming out at a time. Therefore, many people reason that college graduates are not as competent as before for many of them have difficulties in finding jobs. But I disagree with this conclusion.Firstly, admittedly, there are some college graduates who are not competent, but these students can not represent all the students. Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, more and more high school students have access to the higher education. Inevitably, the standard has been lowered; otherwise, university can not admit so many applicants. While those smart students in high schools are more likely to have excellent performance, other not-so-good students would have difficulties in college learning. As a result, those graduates with bad performance in college can not demonstrate the value of higher learning to the society and hence they gradually form the incompetent image of college graduates.Secondly, those who hold this negative opinion do not take the social context into consideration. As is known, in the period when China carried out planned economic policies, college graduates did not need to worry about their jobs, for “iron-bowls” waited for them after graduation. But after the reform of higher education, college graduates have to find jobs for themselves. When hundreds of thousands of graduatescompete for a limited number of job vacancies, there are inevitably many who can not procure ideal jobs. Besides, employment is always influenced by global and national economy. When economy slows down, the corporate world would not recruit as many employees as before. For example, in 2009, many college graduates, from both prestigious universities and less-known universities, have difficulties in hunting jobs. In this sense, it is not college graduates that are incompetent; instead, it is the social context that is unfavorable to college graduates. As factors combine to lead to a result, one can not simply reach conclusions without taking various factors into account. Otherwise, one would make reductionist mistakes. In this case, those who think college students are not as competent as before have made this kind of mistake. They just attribute college graduates’ difficulties in finding jobs to their incompetence, without exploring the social and economic situations.3. Is It Meaningful to Receive College Education? (425字)Given the fact that many college students have difficulties in finding jobs in the recent, thousands of high school students are reported to refuse to take the National College Entrance Examination. The news seems so convincing that many students, their parents, and the society reach the conclusion that receiving college education is a waste of time and money. Undoubtedly, these students can earn some money working in big cities or running their own business in the near future. However, I am of opinion that this view is myopic, which is to the detriment of personal development and China’s overall growth in the long term.Firstly, in terms of personal development, university is not a vocational training center despite the fact that a university diploma indicates graduates are more likely to find decent jobs. Instead, university is a place for personal cultivation and improvement. In universities, students will learn to find their real interests, perfect their personality, and form right outlooks toward the world. Furthermore, students will learn to gather, analyze, and evaluate information so that they can resolve problems in their lives. For those who are suspicious of the value of higher learning, to some extent, they can be regarded as plutolatry. They worship money and believe that money is everything in their lives.Secondly, in terms of national growth, the advancement of a nation is characterized by its greatness of high education. In this sense, universities are the centers of research and academic exploration. Take the United States for instance. Among the top 100 universities in the world, the majority of them are located in the United States. The advancement of US high education is indicative of the fact that those universities produce the most Nobel Prize laureates in comparison with other countries. American universities also turn out to be a magnet for most smart students around the world. Those universities contribute tremendous share to the US’ g rowth through scientific and technological support. In China, if the belief that receiving college education is a waste of time and money can not be corrected in time, it is inevitable that China can only reap short-term GDP growth but will be deprived of opportunity to become a competitive international players in the long run, for the human resource will be drained eventually. In sum, receiving college education will benefit both individual and the country. Indicative of the dire job market for college graduates is not the uselessness of college education. Instead, college education means we should study harder to make a full preparation for the future.4. Can College Village Heads Plan Really Help? (453字)Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, the number of university graduates has been on the increase since the central government started implementing the plan. Though the plan helps improve our national quality, it creates pressure for the job markets. With so many college students coming out at a time, many graduates have difficulties in finding suitable jobs. In order to create more jobs, the government encourages college graduates to work in villages of 28 provinces and regions with a view that rural administration will be strengthened at the same time. As a result, tens of thousands college graduates have been appointed as villageofficials in the rural areas. It appears that this plan helps alleviate the pressure caused by graduate employment, but I do not think the plan will work in the long run.Firstly, after serving as village officials in the rural areas for two years, the majority of those college village officials will start to look for jobs in the job market again, aggravating the pressure of the job market. Some may argue that the number of those village officials who enter the job market again is balanced by the number of new college graduates who would be appointed as village officials. The truth is that while those students have spent two years in the rural areas, they do not gain enough experience in the corporate world and are likely to forget what they have learnt in college. In this sense, they are not guaranteed to find decent jobs again. Besides, when working in the rural areas, these students with higher degrees are respected by village people, and are likely to get accustomed to feeling superior to people around them. One can imagine they would probably be frustrated when they work with those who hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees.Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demand of our society are unbalanced, the imbalance can be obtained by increasing available jobs or decreasing the supply of college graduates, which means the reduction of college enrollment. Given the fact that the economy slows down in the recent, it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good terms for graduates such as well-paid salary and residential certificate guarantee, the government can create more jobs in the short term, but does not provide long-term remedy. In this sense, the plan does not solve the fundamental imbalance between the supply and the demand of college graduates. In sum, the plan to encourage college graduates to work in the rural areas can only provide a temporary remedy for the job market. I think the government should recognize the fundamental imbalance and find the way back to elite education.5. Should College Education Be Vocation-Oriented? (418字)Due to the increased enrollment of college students in recent years, the total number of graduates coming out at the same time is such that many college graduates have difficulties in procuring jobs, especially when the economy is suffering slowdown. And then many scholars suggest that colleges should lay emphasis on vocational training by setting relative courses in the college curriculum so that graduates are more likely to be employed. Taking the employers’ requirement into consideration, that is, wor king experience, the suggestion seems reasonable. However, I think, even if universities become vocation-oriented, it can not serve well for the employment. Besides, the vocational orientation will do harm to the higher education.Firstly, the suggestion seems to be based on the fact that new college graduates may have learned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities. In accord with this suggestion, if college students have received enough vocational training and gained experience in internship, they are likely to get employed. Admittedly, self-improvement is crucial for new graduates to hunt jobs. But the suggestion does not take into account job vacancies in the present. Though China’s economy keeps growing at a rate of about 9% in the recent an d the number of jobs does increase, too many graduates coming out at a time will create great pressure for the job market. As an official stated, “the grand college enrollment plan is one of the main reasons for the current unemployment issue”. Therefore, even if college students have enough experience and skills, will they succeed in procuring jobs when there are no positions available at all?Secondly, vocational orientation is to the detriment of the higher learning in the long term. Let us begin with the difference in goals between university and vocational training. As college students may decide to finish hisstudies after graduation or may continue at a higher level, university courses should thus provide both basic knowledge and a sound basis for further studies. In vocational training, the goals of a given course are distinct, that is, the course is designed to teach trainees basic knowledge and skills. In consequence, if universities are vocation-oriented, students at college can not get prepared in class for a higher level of learning. Predictably, the pyramid of higher learning will crumble if universities can not produce enough qualified students. In conclusion, vocation-orientation may help improve graduates’ skills but it can not increase the number of available positions. The suggestion just offers a wrong remedy, and will do harm to the higher learning.6. On Following Suit (402字)As people respond to incentives, they will change their behaviors if they perceive that costs or benefits change. This principle seems to find wide application in our daily lives. When college graduates learn that receiving a master degree will give them an upper hand in the job market, many decide to take part in post-graduate entrance examinations. In China, it is regarded as following suit. Though we admire those who pride themselves on sticking to their ideals and principles, odds may not be against those who follow suit. Generally speaking, there are both advantages and disadvantages of following suit.Firstly, following suit is indicative of the fact that followers have no indispensable beliefs or fixed principles and hence they are flexible in the vicissitudes of lives. When the social context changes and opportunities arise, those followers are the first to respond and make decisions. Take the English training service for example. In early 1990s, increasing number of college graduates decided to study overseas and hence English training service was in large demand. Given that forerunners had make a fortune by providing training programs to those graduates, many businessmen just followed suit and established several training schools. Undoubtedly, those who followed suit when the market did not reach saturation did make money.Secondly, it is noteworthy that following suit can avoid making mistakes. For those forerunners, there is no previous information at their hand, and therefore, it will take a long time to learn and improve by trial and error. During the period of trial and error, forerunners will encounter unexpected difficulties and pressures. As a result, when those become successful in certain domains, they have proved that the path will lead to success, providing both pros and cons. On the contrary, followers need not experience the process of trial and error. They can just imitate their forerunners’ proven pattern of behaviors and have easier access to success. There are also some disadvantages of following suit. When there are so many followers, the world will become crowded and odds are against those later followers. Furthermore, following suit prevents innovation and creation, which is to the detriment of our society. However, whether one should follow suit or not is not simply a to-be-or-not-to-be question. A basic assumption of individual person is that everyone is rational. So one should carefully calculate costs and benefits in specific circumstances before they decide to follow suit or not.7. Should Chinese Language Course Be Adopted in College Curricula? (437字)The moment I saw the topic, a post originally submitted in Peking University BBS occurred to me. The post composed of a conversation between a Chinese young man, the author, and a waiter coming from Japan. The author suffered frustration when the waiter asked him about Chinese culture. Surprisingly, the Japanese demonstrated that he got command of more Chinese culture than most Chinese young people. I do not know what your initial response is supposing that you were set in the circumstance. As a matter of fact, Chineselanguage course has drawn scant attention among college students, for many students lay their emphasis on English learning. I am of opinion that Chinese language course should be set in the category of compulsory courses in college curriculum.Firstly, it is high time for college students to re-learn Chinese language. For many Chinese students, they just learn Chinese language for examinations’ sake in elementary schools and high schools. In other words, many learn Chinese language to get high scores instead of grasping the essence of Chinese culture. In fact, we can not measure one’s understanding of culture by how many scores he get in the examinations or how many poems and essays he has memorized. What matters is whether one can figure out the gist and facilitate his life through what he gains from the learning. In college, students are not imposed as much pressure as in high school in learning Chinese language. Besides, they are more mature than in childhood and have the ability to think critically. If they do not seize the chance to re-learn the Chinese language, odds are that they can not inherit wisdoms of our ancestors and not get prepared for the future.Secondly, since western cultures are looming large in China with the advent of globalization, Chinese traditional culture seems to be endangered. Many people, especially the youth, are interested in learning foreign language, English in particular, and their cultures. They prefer to watch American movies, Japanese cartoons, and listen to foreign music. While western cultural products are well received, the popularity of the Chinese counterpart is on the decrease. When foreign cultures are so prevalent in China, will our future generation figure out our Chinese cultural identity? As the basic manifestation of culture, Chinese language deserves more attention and better treatment. Chinese universities should take the responsibilities to preserve and develop our traditional culture, Chinese language in particular. All in all, as traditional Chinese culture and wisdom manifest themselves in Chinese language, adopting the course in the curricula will not only educate college students, but also help preserve and develop Chinese culture.8. College Students’ Image Reconsidered (487字)Nowadays, college students comprised of the post-80 generation and the post-90 generation are always put in the storm of criticisms. To list a few of these criticisms, they are accused of being spoiled by their parents, for the majority of them are the only children of their families. Brought up in the social context of opening up and reform, they are always renounced by the older generation that they have been westernized looking to western cultures as fashionable and being cynical the Chinese counterpart. Given more and more college graduates have difficulties in finding decent jobs, they are perceived by the older generations as not competent as college students of the older generations. However, I am of opinion that the aforementioned negative image is imposed upon the post-80 and -90 generations, which is unfair.Firstly, as the majority of post-80 and -90 generation college students are at school or in the lower layers of social myriad, they are vulnerable to their superior’s judgments. As is known, those older generations were brought up in a less affluent and isolated society, they were denied a favorable social background. College students in the past had to work harder to be admitted due to the limited resources of higher learning. When they were in college, many could not gain allowance from their families so that they got into the habit of frugality. Before the adoption of opening up policy, it’s difficult for them to get access to foreign cultures, not to mention American movies and Japanese cartoons. As a result, those older generations are likely to deem any behaviors different from their own experiences as unacceptable and due to their seniority they are able toexpress their judgments on various occasions. On the contrary, the post-80 and -90 generations can not voice their opinions in a society dominated by the older generations.Secondly, admittedly, part of the post-80 and -90 college students fit into the negative image, but they can not represent all the college students. According to our experience, there are students who are obsessed with computer games, who spend a lot of time keeping love affairs, and who spend money in an extravagant manner. In comparison with these students, the majority of the post-80 and -90 students can fit into an ideal model of college students. Some absorb themselves in the library all day long. Some take part-time jobs in their spare time to pay for tuition fees. Some voluntarily go to the remote areas to teach poverty-stricken students. I was wondering why the media do not provide more reports of those positive aspects of the post-80 and -90 generation college students. On all accounts, the negative image is imposed by those established older generations, and can not represent all the college students. As a member of the post 80 and 90 college students, I believe that we will still be the backbone of our society in the future.9. Should Public Announcement of Disciplinary Measures Be Abolished? (412字)In the recent, it is reported that students commit suicides after school authorities make public announcement of disciplinary measures against those culprits’ violating certain school regulations. Oftentimes, those culprits’ parents would sue schools for compensations. No matter how much money they are compensated, it can not change the fact that the dead students are not to regenerate. Some educationalists hence suggest that public announcement of disciplinary measures be abolished. They argue that students are fragile in psychology for they are the only children and usually get too much protection from families. But should they get away with punishments? I do not think so.Firstly, as students have already borne in their mind the consequences that if they break certain school regulations, they must take the responsibility. They should accept any due punishments. I do not believe that those students have no idea of what those regulations are or any previous regulation enforcements. Generally speaking, they are repeatedly told not to breach school norms and regulations by their head teachers and parents. Before students sit certain exams, they will be reminded again of disposing of any material relevant to examinations. They will also be informed what consequences they are to bear if they don’t conform to the regulations. Therefore, if they still intend to break norms and regulations, they must accept any forms of punishment without complaints. Otherwise, norms and regulations would have no bonding effects.Secondly, the purpose of public announcement of disciplinary measures is to help those culprits by supervision of the public. As people tend to hold their mistakes from being revealed to other people, they actually avoid acknowledging their mistakes and are unwilling to correct them. After the publication of their mistakes, culprits would be judged by their classmates, friends and teachers, and hence they can be imposed pressures not to err again. Without the publication, as those culprits may regard school authorities as lenient, they can get away with light punishments. It is more likely that they would err in the same manner. In a word, the public announcement of disciplinary measures means to help those culprits, instead of punishing them for the punishment’s sake. Some culprits may be not ready to accept th e criticism after the public announcement is made. If this is the case, why do they not take a while to decide whether it is worthwhile to make these mistakes? Isn’t it irresponsible that they make mistakes and want to get away with due punishments?。

专八作文及参考优秀6篇专业八级英语作文篇一Along with the advance of science and technology, electronic products, such as computer, MP3,and cell phone and so on. Among them, cell phone exerts a big influence on our daily life.It has dramatically changed our way of communication and socializing. As to its virtues and defects about cell phone, peoples opinion are widely varied.Recently, a professor named Baron conducted a survey among 2000 college students and consulted their attitudes toward cell phone. Conclusion was reached that the biggest advantage of cell phone is that it can connect the users with other people through short message, which is very convenient compared with traditional letter writing and also very cheap with the telephone call taking into consideration. As every coin has two sides, the very virtue of the cell phone is also the biggest disadvantage, which makes other people can easily fine them with a call even a phone are gradually intruding upon the private space of people. For the most part, I agree with professor Baron s conclusion. Let me first illustrate its virtues. It indeed save much time and efforts when we want to find a helping hand.It also shortens the distance between people,no matter how far two people are, they can easily get in touch with each other through a call and tell each other about what funny or sad things they come upon. The most obvious advantage of short message is that it makes people familiar and intimate. Sometimes ,people feel awkward to say something to others through face to face communication or making a phone call, the short message come to rescue, all the discomfort will be diminished for the messages covering the emotional effect. Messages are very popular and prevailing when a festival or delightful event comes. People can pass their blessing and wished with decent to others, even they are just nodding acquaintances. For its defects, it is really annoying. Scan messages and harassing calls have gained access to us. We have to take time and energy to tackle these problems. And whenever we want to have a break or do some interesting things, we would be interrupted by phone calls or messages. Therefore, some people put forward their solutions that we could turn off the phone when we deem it is necessary or change the situation model of the phone to unreachable. These solutions really bring consolation to us, but they are very hard to apply. Suppose you are working for a company and yearning for promotion and increase in wages, you are hardly dare to do those things in fear a loss of big opportunity. Even if you are just an ordinary full time housewife, you are also incapable of doing that, simply because you have a large family to take care. Thus a new term was coined recently- cell phone syndrome, which refers to people can not live without cell phone. Some people even suffer from it that they have to force themselves to get away from cell phones.Though a lot of complaints about cell phone has emerged, its advantages, from my point of view, are far outweigh its disadvantages. Just as a saying goes that there is no perfect man on earth,so does cell phone. Thanks to cell phone, we are launch into a more efficient information change age. Every respect of our life are greatly benefited form it and it will uncertainly bring us to a brighter future.最新专八作文篇二You know you deserve it,but when it comes to asking for a raise, you get a little weak in theknees. You can#39;t expect other people to remember your accomplishments,so you need to keep these things out front.Start by knowing your job description and the company#39;s compensation more than ever,it#39;s important to take stock of yourself because there#39;s so much change: Next, use the Internet.Knowing what other people make and where they make it will give you a leg-up in you know where you are and where other people are in terms of compensation, and then figure out what you want.It doesn#39;t have to just be for the whole package, consider other items you can negotiate-incentive compensation, stock options,an extra vacation week, personal days or education e them to offset a lower raise offer. But,first and foremost,don#39;t just go in and ask.It is your work that comes first.最新专八作文篇三Summer vacation life is imminent,I booked a table, for their summer vacation life more colorful, not only a waste of time for two months.Because my parents are going to work,so I must have five days a week in class.Ann class to prepare for us to learn a lot of courses, such as English, mathematics, poetry etc,of course, let me live a very full life.Leisure entertainment,of course, not less,so we arranged the trip to taitung. At the beginning of the coast of taitung, deer farms, let me leave a good impression, especially in the mountain bike trip,I have to ride all the way,I am very admire!I made a reservation for their projects are: learn to swim, read reference books increase knowledge, exercise more, help to do the housework, learning skills, etc.,these projects are waiting for me to reach,so I need to work harder.Daily homework is a lot of,just can use summer vacation to relax the mood,do usually doesn#39;t have time to do things, let summer vacation have a more meaningful life.英语专八作文篇四Some time ago, China’s Ministry of Education banned university students from renting private accommodation during their studies. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.SampleTREAT STUDENTS AS ADULTS, NOT CHILDRENSome time ago, China’s Ministry of Education banned university students from renting private accommodation during their studies. This has given rise to a heated discussion. Some people, especially school management and most parents, embrace such a ban, while others criticize it fiercely. Personally, I am against the ban.First, most college students are adults and should enjoy the right to choose where to live. In banning off-campus housing, the education authorities seem to believe that college students, most aged 18-22, should be treated as children, rather than adults. Some administrators claimthat students lack self-control and cannot make proper decisions for themselves. This is surely not fair treatment for such a bright young generation. If these students didn’t attend colleges, but worked in companies or joined the army, they would be treated as adults.Secondly, private accommodation is indeed preferable to living on campus for many students. It is true that living on campus promotes a sense of belonging by being closely connected with other students. This could truly be a valuable part of the four-year college education. Students living on campus also have easier access to vast school resources, such as libraries, computer rooms and various evening seminars. But crowded dormitories, high noise levels, early electricity curfews and other strict codes also make dorms less attractive. At least dorms are not the right home for everyone. Off-campus housing, meanwhile, offers a greater degree of freedom. That is especially true for self-motivated students, students studying late for important tests or working late on academic projects. Many students living off-campus also share rooms. They have to negotiate contracts, pay utilities and probably cook for themselves. All help prepare students to better manage their study and life. In fact this also conforms to most schools’ creed that students should be in touch with the real world as much as possible. One of the motives for the housing ban is that education authorities hope this will help prevent students from cohabitation and having sex during school years. But since students can now legally marry in schools, why should they be banned from having sex? Reality tells us that this is wishful thinking. Banning sex among students has been and will be a mission impossible. This is probably why some schools have installed condom vending machines on campus or provide free condoms in school clinics, which tells students to have safe sex, rather than no sex.To sum up, we should treat students as adults instead of children. Though there might be problems in allowing students to leave off campus, we should not give up eating for fear of choking, as the Chinese idiom says. In today’s diversified world, schools should show respect to students in making their own choices. After all, schools are not military barracks and students are not soldiers.英语专八作文篇五Nowadays, food has bee easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. The twentieth century has brought with it many advances. With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically. In some ways life is worse, but mostly it is better. Changes in food preparation methods, for example, have improved our lives greatly. The convenience of preparing food today is amazing. Even stoves have gotten too slow for us. Microwave cooking is much easier. We can press a few buttons and a meal is pletely cooked in just a short time. People used to spend hours preparing an oven-cooked meal, and now they can use that time for other, better things. Plus, there are all kinds of portable, prepackaged foods we can buy. Heat them in the office microwave, and lunch at work is quick and easy.Food preparation today allows for more variety. With refrigerators and freezers, we can preserve a lot of different foods in our homes. Since technology makes cooking so much faster, people are willing to make several dishes for even a small meal. Parents are more likely to let children be picky, now that they can easily heat them up some prepackaged macaroni and cheese on the side. Needless to say, adults living in the same house may have very different eating habits as well. If they don’t want to cook a lot of different dishes, it’s mon now to eat out at restaurantsseveral times a week.Healthful eating is also easier than ever now. When people cook, they use new fat substitutes and cooking sprays to cut fat and calories. This reduces the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. Additionally, we can buy fruits and vegetable fresh, frozen or canned. They are easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily. A hundred years ago, you couldn’t imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender! Our lifestyle is fast, but people still like good food. What new food preparation technology has given us is more choices. Today, we can prepare food that is more convenient, healthier, and of greater variety than ever before in history.最新专八作文篇六Health is our most important possession,so we should do our best to maintain it.As we all know, good health is necessary to happiness and the contrary, people who are in poor health are often pessimistic or depressed. As a rule, bad health means misery and failure. As far as I#39;m concerned ,there are three principal suggestions for us to follow.First of all,we should adopt a scientific diet, which provides the necessities for your body. The second one is that we are supposed to persist in taking physical exercise ,especially the people working st but not least,we are supposed to stay in a cheerful mood.As for me,in order to keep fit,I force myself to keep away from the junk food although it usually tastes ,I even form good habits of doing morning exercises, listening to beautiful music and reading good books, which always cheer me up.All in all, only by carefully obeying the laws of health can we keep ourselves healthy.。

英语专业八级作文万能模板Why Do I Attend University?Every summer hundreds of thousands of young students attend the college entrance examination, fighting hard to be among the lucky ones to enter universities. But have this large crowd asked themselves such a question: why do you want to go to university? It is dangerous if so many people try so hard to do something without clear purposes. For me, going to university can fulfil three important purposes. The most direct motive for going to university is to secure a good job in the future. With the largest population in the world, China is certainly to be a gathering place of labor force. When there is more than enough labor force, one has to be extraordinary in order to succeed in the job market. As not all young people can go to university now, an education experience in university is sure to guarantee some advantages. If you open a classfied advertisement, you may find that most of the well-jpaying jobs require a university degree or higher. Therefore, without university education, I cannot possibly find a decent job to support myself and my family.Besides good job and income, a more important motive for going to university is to acquire knowledge. Since high school I have become increasingly interested in learning knowledge. I was usually fascinated by what teachers taught in various classes, and this curiosity drives me to know more. I have found that things taught in high school are just on very basic level. If I want to dig deeper, the best place is here at university. With the help of professors and books, I can learn the knowledge more thoroughly and systematically. I won't be satisfied with my life unless I can satisfy my curiosity for knowledge in university. The most profound motive for going to university is to make some contributions. Due to the influence of my parents, I do not just want to just support myself in the society; I also want to do something for the society. Of course I don't have to go to university in order to make this contribution, but I find that more education can surely help me do it better. History reveals that those who have made more contributions are invariably better educated. Great figures like Newton, Einstein are all well educated. How can I make more contributions without university education? Therefore, three motives drive me into the gate of my university. I come here for a good job, for more knowledge, and most importantly, for better contributions. I am sure with the knowledge I learn here, I will achievethe three purposes. And I am also sure that other people will also find university education rewarding to their life. What Has Turned Us Into Cheaters?2008年09月12日星期五 01:35 P.M.What Has Turned Us Into Cheaters?"The writing topic for this year's CET-6 was revealed again before the day of testing." "A student has been expelled due to misbehavior in a final examination." This kind of titles has been very popular these days, and all these have revealed a public secret: cheating on exams. This behavior, which was denounced by almost all, is spreading at a high rate, and this has puzzles not only teachers but also the whole society. Then why do students cheat on exams? In my understanding, there are mainly three reasons,(namely unscientific testing, competion for scholarship, and pressure from future job hunting). Some students cheat on exams to protest against the improper testing format. The purpose of university education should be teaching students to use knowledge to solve problems, therefore, exams and tests should test students' ability to use certain knowledge to solve some problems. But most tests in China just test understanding instead of application, and some exams are even worse because they only test students' memory. Some students think it unnecessary to spend time and effort to prepare for such exams, so the just cheat in order to get a decent score, which in their mind, means nothing. Dr. Wang who specializes in education assessment supported this view in one paper, and he said that teachers should blame themselves because they forced students to cheat.More students cheat on exams in order to struggle for scholarship. As universities are collecting tuition from students, they also increase the amount of scholarship. This money of course is very attractive to students, who have virtually no income. As scholarship is mostly decided by examination scores, students willing to get the money will try every means possible. In a recent survey, some good students admitted that they cheat on exams because "if most students are cheating, it is unfair when you choose not to". This probably represents a breach of traditional ethics, and is a more important reason than conscientious protest against improper tests. The most important reason, in my mind, should be the pressure from job hunting. In the past few years the situation in the job market is deteriorating, and this forces students to prepare as early as possible. Due to its importance, students naturally want to make their reports more attractive, and one way to realize it is cheating. As a student said in a news report, students are aware of the cost of being caught, but theprofit of not being caught is too much, so many of them just "go ahead". Maybe it is not unreasonable to say that it is the society that makes students cheaters. To sum up, the desires to get a good job and a high scholarship, or simply to signal a protest in current education, have forced us students to copy in exams. It is undeniable that some suffer from weak moral principles, but it is wrong to blame them only. Only when the society and the university find the real source of the problem and deal with it can we restore the traditional criticism against cheating.Should students take part-time jobs?2008年09月04日星期四 03:36 P.M.Should students take part-time jobs?Although still much lower than in foreign countries, the percentage of university students taking part-time jobs in China is on the increase. Some people criticize these students on the ground that part-time jobs distract转移 students' attention and expose students too early to the issue of money. However, I firmly believe that working during university education can be very beneficial to students.First of all, taking part-time jobs can help reduce the financial burden of the students' families. Generally speaking, the income of most parents is not very high. As many universities are increasing their tuition, the education of their children is becoming an increasingly heavy burden for many parents. Some parents in the cities find it hard to pay this cost, not to mention those parents in the countryside. But if students can take some part-time jobs, their income can cover part of the expenditure, thus lowering the burden of their parents. One of my classmates pay for daily expenses completely from his own earings, and both his parents and he are very proud of it.Furthermore, taking part-time jobs can teach students much about hardship. Chinese students are mostly the only child at home, and their requests are usually met at any cost. This advantage actually deprives these children of the oppotunity to experience hardship, which can teach them a lot about the society. By taking some part-time jobs, students can not only learn that it is hard to earn even a little money, but also learn to cultivate a correct viewpoint about life. Most importantly, doing part-time jobs can sharpen students' awareness of the society. If students spend all their time on study, they will not have sufficient understanding of the society, and this insufficient knowledge may be dangerous when these students leave university for the society. But through part-time work, students will not only get a goodunderstanding of the society and prepare themselves psychologically for the future career and life, but gain much experience in dealing with realities and people of different kinds. It is true that taking part-time jobs will take away some time that can be spent on study and that it is not good for students to focus their mind on money. But it is equally true that taking part-time jobs can bring students the benefits of less financial burden, more experience of hardship as well as more awareness of the society. They definitely surpass the harms of the work. What we should do is to teach students to arrange their time well and not to focus too much on money, and then encourage them to take part-time jobs.IS HOME THE BEST ?2008年09月04日星期四 03:13 P.M. IS HOME THE BEST ?Whether university students, who are already adults, should be allowed to live in rented flats out of campus has been debated for some time. Recently the Ministry of Education has issued a formal document in which it expressed its approval. This naturally intensifies the debate. In my opinion, living on campus is much better than living away from universities because it helps students with their study, their life as well as their understanding of the society.First of all, living on campus can help students study better. Those who prefer to live off campus usually say that living in a rented flat means that they can manage their own time without interruption from others, and this can help their study. These may be true; but by living on campus, students can stay closer to study facilities such as the library and language lab, thus getting more information and training. Besides, they can have more discussion and group activities, and this is very important to put knowledge to use.Secondly, living on campus can help students live a richer life. Students who live off campus say that they can stay closer to shopping centers or cinemas, so they can enjoy a colorful life rather than the boring life at school. But this is wrong. Shopping or seeing movies is not the lifestyle suitable to students because they are distractive, time-consuming and expensive. On the other hand, there are a lot of facilities on campus which promise a colorful life. For example, on most campuses students can find cinemas, swimming pools, tennis courts, etc. These facilities are less expensive or even free. Besides, there are usually some clubs on campus where students can learn from each other, but students can seldom do so if they live off campus.Lastly, living on campus can help create real friendship. Students who prefer to live away from school argue that they can stay closer to society, meeting different kinds of people, and become more mature. But this again is a misconception. On the one hand, they cannot spend enough time on these people, therefore cannot really know them well enough. On the other hand, as university students are young, they should first learn to stay with people of similar age. By living in the same place for four years, students can learn to observe, understand, and deal with different kinds of contemporaries, and build real friendship with some of them. This is more important than staying with various residents in the same building. There is no denying that university students are adults, and their freedom and rights should be respected. The recent decision of the Ministry of Education is exactly a case to the point. But considering the benefits on students' study, life and understanding of the society, I strongly suggest those who plan to live off campus to think before they leap. Anyway, for university students, university is their home, and as the saying goes,"East or west, home is the best".Interview---A chance to view the outer part, but not the core2008年08月12日星期二 10:10 A.M.Interview---A chance to view the outer part, but not the coreAs a senior student in university, I have gone through many interviews---interview to recruit new club members, interview for internship实习医师, 实习医师期 and so on. In my opinion, the procedure of recruitment is like choosing apples---viewing resumes is liking picking up apples, you can only decide the appearances, or in other words, whether there are obvious flaws. Interview is like the first bite, by which you know the real taste of an apple. But only by eating all the apple can you see the core. That is to say, only by working with a person for some time, can you judge a person. So to me, interview can help us to get a basic knowledge about a person and is indispensable in recruitment but it has its limitations.Interview is most helpful in the aspect that it provides interviewer a chance to observe something that resumes can not tell, for example, How the interviewee behaves? Is he/she nervous under pressure? Does he/she has excellent communication skills like eye contact? These things might be very important. Because some job might ask more than one's academic knowledge it might also require the ability of dealing with people and so on. Another important function of interview is that it can help interviewer to decide whether the interviewee lied in his/her resume. As we all know, under hot completion, in order to get more chances, some people tend to lie in their resumes about their experiences and so on.But in an interview, interviewer could ask questions related with interviewee's experiences. If the experiences are made-up, it's easy to detect. The last advantage of interview I want to list here is that it can be carried out in different forms for different purposes for example, pressure interview--- to see how a person react under harsh conditions, group interview--- to see how a person act in a team and so on. Thus, by arranging an interview in a particular form, a company can find out the person most suitable for the job.But interviews have their limitations. You can not find out all about a person in only a few hours like that some apple might appear good and taste sweet but bad in the core.In summary I want to point out that interview is an efficient way for companies to choose their employs but only by observing the long term performance, can you judge an employee..Should a person make an important decision alone?A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. People, who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you can give you good advice, give you a different perspective, or share their own experience. When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in collage, I talked to my teachers and advisors; they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen unsuitable courses. In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play. Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The day of the audition, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked. She was able to provide me with another perspective on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a lead in the play.Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decision for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encounter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspective and experience. My opinion on advertisementAdvertisements appear everywhere in modern society. There are many way to advertise and ads come in different forms. Newspapers and billboards carry advertisements; some products are announced on TV and radio which have a wide audience.Advertising is a big industry and many agencies are set up for furnish a variety of services for it.However, advertising is not welcome sometimes. A most irritating thing is to watch advertisements before and during films on TV. There are so many of them that they make you forget what you are sitting there for. The ironical thing is that advertisements of one type of things are often shown one after another so that you are confused as to which product you should choo se. What’s more, advertising is not always truthful. The advertisers exaggerate the benefits of the merchandise they want to sell in order to gain more profits. Thus the consumers fall victim to such advertising.Although there are disadvantages of ads, we can not forget the advantages and the conveniences they bring to us. First, by telling us where something is available, they may save us money and time. They guide us in finding suitable jobs and other information as well. Secondly, a wide range of activities and institutions receive financial support through advertising. Without this support we would have to pay much more for newspapers and sports games. Thirdly, perfect advertisements even provide entertainment. A considerable amount of effort goes into their production. So in most cases the photography is truly artistic, the slogans are genuinely witty, and the situations are decidedly funny.Generally speaking, advertisements have become one of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today. Let us make our life easier by learning to choose proper ads, and be the master of advertisements, not their salve.Living in university dormitories or apartments in the community?I think it is better for college students to live on campus during their first two years, and then move into an apartment for off-campus life, whilejuniors and seniors need the independence of off-campus life. Student’s needs change over four years, so their housing should too.Living on-campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things are done. You get the whole university experience. Plus, you interact more with other students. This includes not only your roommates, but everyone in your dormitory. The older students in the dormitory can be a big help for the new students. Keeping up with studies in your first year is hard enough. You should not have to worry about finding your way around and figuring out the university bureaucracy.Living in the dormitory also makes a student feel more a part of the university community. There are more opportunities for becoming involved in university activities and networking with students and university administration.Living off-campus, however, is a definite advantage for older students. Finding an apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord’s regulations, cooking meals, and figuring out budgets are all good practice for life after graduation. This kind of independence helps older students grow in adulthood.Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on around them. Campus can be like little worlds of their own. There are few children or older people and everyone is focused on education. Getting to know neighbors who are not students is good for students coming from difference places. It is a chance to find out what other people think and feel.I think a combination of two years on-campus and two years off-campus isa winning combination for most students.Providing physical exercises should not be the schools responsibility? While physical exercise is important, I do not believe that it is the school’s responsibility to provide physical training for its students. That is something that everyone can take care of on his or her own. Many students get plenty of physical exercise as part of their daily life or recreation. A student who bicycles ten miles to and from school does not need more exercise. A good physical education program must take a student’s outside activity into consideration. Otherwise, some students will spend valuable class hours repeating physical exercise. If a school offers such activities, it also suggests that students will be graded on them. The range of possible physical activities is great: football, swimming, weight lifting, ballet, ballroom dance, yoga, skiing, horseback riding, and golf are just a few. However, the number of activities that a school could offer is small. Some students could get bad grades in physical education simply because the school could not provide an activity they enjoy or do well. This seems unfair. Research suggests that participation, not excellence, in these activities determines the physical benefits the body will get.Another issue is economic. Many schools do not have the money to provide gry facilities, playing fields, and athletic equipment for their student. Other schools are located in cities where the kind of space just is not available. A few schools would rather keep money for academic purposes. Schools can certainly encourage physical activity. They can provide space for activities, events, and classes for physical activities. They can encourage students to plan time away from academic studies to get some exercise. Children should begin their formal schooling at an early agePeople have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based on respective ground. Those who argue for the playing time for childern suggest that children at a very early age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people are partially right, for it is true that young childern can hardly concentrate. Their attention on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for shorter periods, can’t we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to study, young children are occupied with learnging but not with playing. Those who argue for chilldren’s earyly commencement for formal education believe that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of learning helps develop children’s mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ability to understand and the ability to do simple calculation. Children’s habit of studying and love for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the sound foundation for their future studies.Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young childern much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habits needs a long time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for before the love for playing is established. 专业英语八级作文(通用)My Family Everybody both has a happy family. How about my family? Well, there are four people in my family. They are my father, my mother, my sister and me. My father is as tall as me. And we are both taller than my mother and sister. Although my mother and sister are both shorter than us, they are very hard-working.My father is older than my mother , my sister and me . He is forty- five years old and my mother is thirty - nine years old this year . What about your family? Do you have a family the same happy as mine? Therefore,I will readily sign up to volunteer in the western China despite various challenges I may meet. Think of the differences we can make there and the changes this experience can make to us, why not walk out of the ivory tower and step onto the promising land of our country?Although the grand ceremony of Oscar was over this year, the attention and discussion linger in the Chinese movie munity and out. Some insiders hold that following global trends is the only way to develop China’s film industry. Others insist, however, that the Oscars are simply one the many awards that Americans like to crown themselves. Domestic films should maintain their distinct flavors. As a movie fan myself, I think we shouldstrive for it to gain international recognition.Firstly, the Oscars Award is an international recognition in terms of both artistic performance and box office revenue. With live broadcast in 50 languages, it plays a huge role in shaping the global film industry. It is no wonder that so many people around the world pay much attention to it. The reality is that Hollywood movies account for more than 90 percent of global market shares-this has inevitable worldwide impact. Obviously, the Oscars Award has bee something that we can not afford to ignore it.Moreover, we live in a global, multicultural world where different cultures interact. China’s movie industry needs to realize it and sharpen its petitive edge. If Chinese films areto make a global impact, then movie production, distribution and marketing organization need improving. Chinese films should adjust to satisfy the variety of social demands. Theintroduction of foreign successful formulas and technology is a must for Chinese film industry. It is parochial to think that China can only use its national characteristics to define domestic movies. Conservatism will hinder the progress of film industry. If China does not develop its film industry through embracing innovative multiculturalism, Chinese movies will have little opportunity to gain a share in the international market.Last but not least, the Hollywood films also conform to specific cultural demands. Take this year’s Academy Awards as an example, nominated movies include both high-cost productionslike The Lord of the Rings and subtle, more moderate budgeted projects like Lost in Translation, these films suggest that Hollywood movies maintain a basic balance in keeping the style of its own and absorbing diverse cultures. Hence, the Chinese filmmakers should spare no efforts to present original domestic films to foreign viewers. We will be left behind if we stick to the so-called orthodox. For instance, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon was acted by Chinese actors and through cultural icons, but actually its style and structure of the movie all conform to a Hollywood formula. This partly explains why it appeals to a wider range of audiences from different cultural background. In a word, the Oscars are very important to Chinese filmmakers. Nominations are a kind of approval by international peers of their achievements. As China’s market improves, its movie industry will get stronger and will eventually cash in on the Oscars.Last but not least, the Hollywood films also conform to specific cultural demands. It is indeed a tough question for him: what is happiness? Making a huge sum of money, or winning true love, or keeping good health, or what? Topic 1Should We Ban Internet Slang in News and Formal Documents? The Internet slang words have become very popular among young people. They use terms such as “CU” for “see you” and “PK” for “competition”. But now the Internet slang terms are forbidden in official documents, news broadcasts and textbooks in Shanghai. The public hold different views on the regulation. Some people think such kind of terms will rock our traditional language. But others say the terms are vivid and accurate. There is no need to ban them. As far as I am concerned, we should not simply ban the Internet slang terms, but distinguish the good from the bad, and guide people to use the language appropriately. Some people hold the negative opinion about the Internet slang terms. They think the young people are in the critical period of learning the knowledge and forming their values. For them, it is very important to use the standard language. In the virtue world, they use language at their will. If such kind of language is used in news and formal documents, it will do harm to the healthy development of language, even to our tradition and culture.Their worries are justified, but the language has its own regulations as it is developing. As a flexible language, the Internet language has the feature of newness simplicity and humor, which can help to make the text vivid and interesting. This kind of language is with the feature of the times. In the early 20th century, Hun Shi and Chen Dixie advocated to use the classical Chinese. At first, it was criticized seriously. But the reality proved the worth of the movement. In the development of language, there will be new words and terms, some of which are living, and some are not.The good Internet slang terms will help our language become better and richer. As for some not-so-good ones, they will be washed out naturally. Some Internet slang terms have the same form with the characters, and the meaning they have are relatively stable. So they are very likely to enter the classical Chinese. So we should not factitiously ban the new-born words and terms in news and documents. The fittest will survive. In conclusion, we should not ban the Internet slang terms in news and officialdocuments. If the vigorous Internet slang terms can stand the test of time, they will be accepted at last.Topic 2Should Universities Lower Admission Requirements forCelebrities? It is not rare to hear that some universities lower their admission requirements for celebrity students, such as a pop singer or an Olympic medal winner. Some people think it is unfair to other students, and the universities are utilitarian. But others hold the opinion that the celebrities can’t be blamed for their wanting to go to universities to improve themselves. They make contributions or have talents, so it is justified for universities to accept them with a relatively low requirement. From my point of view, universities should reasonably lower the admission requirements for celebrities, that is, although the requirements lowered, there must still be a principle. On the one hand, it is of great significance for celebrities to be enrolled into universities. Take the Olympic winners for example. They started training since they were little children. They contribute their boundless wisdom an d painstaking efforts to raising the level of our country’s sport competition. Lowering the admission requirements for them is the encouragement and support to their great achievements. It is also beneficial for them to do more contribution to the society after they retire if they receive high education and acquire more knowledge. What’s more, it is a way to combine the high education with competition training, and promote the career of sports. The celebrities make great contributions or have special talents. The universities should consider the situation fully and lower the admission requirements accordingly. On the other hand, not all the celebrities can be accepted into universities. The standard can be lowered but can’t be lowered without limit. The celebrities with primary school education or junior middle school education should not be admitted to universities, because the high education is after senior high middle school. And the celebrities have to finish all the courses and pass all the exams. In my opinion, two principles should be considered. One is the education of senior middle school. The other is the credits required by the university. That’s to say, the celebrities should pay more attention to the study of knowledge, and they must complete their studies. To sum up, we should be sensible about lowering admission requirements for celebrities. For the celebrities who make contributions and have the capacity, universities should provide chances and give them special requirements. But for those who are not suitable, the universities should not lower the standard without limit.Topic 3Why Do People Like to Try Their Luck on Lottery? When you walk on the street, you may see a lot of people rushing into some shops or gathering together buying lotteries, such as welfare lottery tickets, sports lottery tickets and so on. Perhaps you will be shocked by their enthusiasm for such kind of things. Some even spend a large amount of money on them in order to increase the possibility of winning the prize. If the lotteries fail their expectations, they get so disappointed that they may curse or even beat themselves. I think people try their luck on lottery for several reasons.First of all, they try their luck because they want to win a large sum of money with just a little effort. They may think their idea is justified and the dream is not far away. They cherish the hope of getting rich overnight. As is reported by CCTV, a man in Shandong province becomes a criminal after his failure of trying his luck. He has spent all his money on the lottery. He now becomes homeless and leads a miserable life. As far as I am concerned, trying one’s luck on lottery is like gambling. You do not know the rate of winning back your money but you cannot resist the lure of having a try, which is, almost surely, disastrous. Very few people can succeed in this business.Secondly, the society is getting more commercial and material than before. People work just for more money. In other words, some of them prefer money to morals. They are thinking of some shortcut to get rich in the society. I think the social climate exerts a subtle influence on their psychology. We need to clean the social climate for a better humane environment. We should educate people to earn their living by honest labor rather than trying the luck on lottery. Finally, the popularity of buying lottery is due to the gap between the rich and poor. The income gap has become a reason for this activity. The rich becomes richer and richer, while the poor becomes poorer and poorer. This has stimulated some people to try the luck on the lottery. To sum up, we should discourage people from buying the lottery. Meanwhile, we should better our social welfare system so that more people can get rich.Topic 4Should Laotian Be Preserved in Market-oriented Economy?Laotian is not only the commercial phenomenon, but also the history in miniature. It is popular for its unique arts and crafts. However, some of these enterprises have become outdated or are operating in red due to a rigid conventional thinking, loose management or overstaffing. People have different opinions about whether the Laotian should be preserved or not. As far as I’m concerned, the critical point is not only to remain but also to preserve and develop the Laotian. Laotian is important to the traditional culture and the national commerce. As a time-honored brand, Laotian enjoys the extensive reputation in the society. It is of golden opinion, and carries the trust of the customers. Moreover, it is the precise non-material cultural heritage. The city without Laotian will lose the unique scene as a famous historic city.In the market-oriented economic society, Laotian satisfies the emotional need of people for the national culture. But it cannot be denied that now Laotian is paying their way. Affected by the market-oriented economy, Laotian is taking the shine off. The out-dated concepts, old-fashioned products and backward management are all the factors for the fall of Laotian. As for the fact, we should not only remain the Laotian, but also have to preserve and develop it.First, the support system of Laotian should be built up. The advanced technology, automatic intellectual property rights and modern organization are key points in the development of Laotian. On the basis of keeping its traditional features, it should work out new products, which are more suitable for the modern society, so as to extend the market share. Second, Laotian should have the priority in the policy and finance. It is the most important embodiment of a historic city. So In the urban planning, the original location should be preserved. And the government would finance them to improve their technology and equipments. Third, it is suggested that Laotian should be preserved as the intangible assets of the country. In this way, Laotian will do well to the cultural landscape as well as develop its own commercial function. In conclusion, Laotian is the carrier of the traditional culture and arts. It’s a s ymbol of the national history. We should preserve it and use effective ways to develop it. It is not only the demand of the market, but also the requirement of the culture.Topic 5My View on Popular Stars Migrating to Foreign CountriesIn recent years, many popular stars are reported to have migrated to foreign countries. For example, a reputable actress last year swore under the national flag of Singapore to become its citizen. She is claimed to have a Singaporean husband. Although those popular stars have the natural right to choose their nationalities, and there are various reasons for them to make such decisions, once they have migrated to foreign countries, they are no more citizens of PRC. While some people hold that it is their natural right to migrate to any foreign country, others categorize those stars in the group of traitors in peacetime. As far as I am concerned, their naturalization from China to foreign nation is not acceptable. Firstly, I agree with many observers that those stars have intentions of evading taxes. According to the relevant articles in tax regulations, stars that have changed their Chinese citizenship will be entitled non-citizen taxpayer status provided the duration and residence meet required standards. This policy indicates that their earnings outside China are tax deductible. Besides, since these stars are no longer Chinese citizens, they will receive preferential treatments such as tax reduction within certain period if they establish their own businesses in China. Though there are no sound evidences on the relationship between tax evasion and migration, we are still justified to claim that tax evasion has been taken into consideration by those stars based on various news coverage and columnists’ observations.Secondly, many stars take advantage of migration to have more babies. Due to the implementation of family control policy in China, the majority of families shall only have one child. Once they are still citizens of PRC, they are not permitted to have a second child. However, there are no such family control policies in many foreign countries. In some countries, birth rates are on the decrease to such an extent that the authorities have to encourage young parents to have more babies by providing additional welfare programs. This point can be illustrated by a famous director’s case. He currently holds the passport issued by the government of the United States and fathers two lovely sons.On all accounts, those stars migrate to foreign countries for their own interests. But they should not forget the fact that it is China that gives them the opportunities to become reputable. In return, it is their responsibility to repay their motherland, instead of deserting China by changing their nationality in their own interests.Topic 6The Validity of College RankingsThe publication of college rankings each year would draw increasing attention from interested people. Those people include reporters, college administrators and faculty, alumni, parents, and high school students. Together with other popular guidebooks, college rankings feature data on the overall universities and colleges in China. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet once stated that “what is in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.” We can ask a similar question over the college rankings: what is in a number? Some scholars warn that college rankings use objective measures to evaluate subjective considerations so that they can only tell a prospective college student a limited amount. In my opinion, we should take several rankings into consideration to evaluate a specific college’s place in the ranking, instead of only relying on one ranking.Firstly, to decide whether college rankings give a college a fair shake, it is crucial to look at the methodology of the ranking system. While one system may conclude peer assessment, retention rate, faculty resources, student selectivity, and financial resources, another system may lay its emphasis on the number of famous alumni, the student evaluation of professors and the evaluation of college students. Accordingly, the same university may rank top in one publication of one ranking system, but be reduced to the average university category in another ranking system. Generally speaking, based on the same criteria, the rankings can objectively reflect the strength of a certain university, but it can not tell the whole story of a college. Besides, many universities are characterized by their unique disciplines. We can not simply reach conclusion that a music and drama university is worse than a technological university according to their places in the ranking system.Secondly, college rankings are likely to be manipulated, which inevitably reduces their authority and trust ability. As a president from a famous university revealed, one college ranking compiling organizationonce visited him and insinuated that if the president agreed to sponsor their organization, they could put the college in higher places of ranking. According to some news report, this phenomenon is not rare. Many universities have been invited to “corporate” with some ranking compiling organizations. Can we still believe that college rankings reflect the strength of some universities when some universities sponsor the compiling in exchange of higher places in the ranking? In a word, college rankings, an important means to evaluate universities, are based on different methodologies. As one methodology only focuses on certain aspects of higher learning, we have to consult with several ranking systems and then we can find out the whole story of A university. We should also be cautious about the manipulation behind the scenes.Topic 7Should Companies Only Focus on Experience? As one res earcher observed, “At present many companies do not trust new graduates, who may have learned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities.” For many companies, they would like to rank working experience as top requirement in their recruitment programs. But, as a matter of fact, college students have spent years in taking compulsory courses and selective courses, how can they accumulate required experience in college? One can not help wondering whether companies should lay their emphasis on experience when recruiting college graduates. As for me, companies’ focus on experience is short-sighted, and hence companies should not only lay stress on experience.Firstly, what lies behind their focus on experience is the motivation to cut expenditure in employee training. Another consideration is that experienced employees can produce immediate profits. For those employers, they are more interested in making money in the present than cultivating talents for the long-term benefits. They seem to lack long term strategies of company development. Generally speaking, prestigious companies that have lasted for a dozen years, even hundreds of years, always have a systematic plan for talents training. They would like to bear the burden of new employee training expenditure for the long-term benefits. How can we expect those companies that are apathetic to recruit college graduate to reap profits in the future without enough supply of talented employees?Secondly, while the recruitment of experienced employees can produce short-term profits, it is hard for those experienced employees to identify with the new companies’ culture, and therefore, companies have to suffer from high employee attrition rates. Companies’ cultural identities have been considered increasingly important to maximize productivity by holding both employees and employers together. Loyal employees are willing to stand by their companies in times of ups and downs. When employees frequently come and go, companies have to bear new hiring costs, costs of lost productivity, cost of knowledge, skills and contacts that the person who is leaving is taking with them out of the previous companies. Obviously, the total expenditure of recruitment of experienced employees in the long term is likely to transcend the expenditure of training loyal employees in the beginning. In sum, indicative of companies’ focus on experience is the motivation of producing immediate profits by cutting expenditure in training inexperienced college students. In the long run, companies are likely to bear more cost of high attrition rates. Therefore, companies should not only emphasize on experience and should give opportunities to college graduates so that they can reap long-term profits.Topic 8My View on Shanghais PhenomenonWhen new models of cell phones with a brand name are desirable for many customers who can not afford them, smart business men began to produce the latest models through imitation but charge only one third or half of the price of the real model. This kind of cell phones, or labeled Shanghais phones, undoubtedly, satisfies customers’ desire and rewards producers’ talents. Gradually, people label any commodities produced by imitation as Shanghais products. Those products include cell phones, digital cameras, laptop computers etc. Some companies even invite people who have similar appearance to popular stars to endorse on their products in Shanghais advertisements. Though those who produce Shanghais products can reap immediate profits, their products will gradually be eliminated from the market.Firstly, indicative of the Shanghais phenomenon is producers’ myopia. When a new model of certain product is in large demand, those speculative factory owners will seize the opportunity to manufacture similar products. Without investment in product research and advertisements, what Shanghaisproducers need to do is copy and then reaps immediate profits. Obviously, as those companies do not lay their emphasis on product research and marketing, they do not have the chance to reap profits in the long run. For those speculators, what matters is whether they can make money as soon and much as possible. When a new model becomes outdated and customers show less interest, inevitably, odds are against those Shanghais companies.Secondly, as part of Shanghais products would be exported to overseas markets, its low quality will do damage to the reputation of “Made in China”. In the market, Shanghais products are usually charged less than the real ones. But why would those salespeople like to sell their products at such a low price? Any rational customers can hence conclude that their quality is not guaranteed. In the long run, foreign customers would realize that products made in China are cheap and of low-quality. The moment they encounter products made in China when shopping, they would pause for a second and then decide to choose products made in other countries. This is not an exaggeration. In Russia, due to the import of fake Chinese products in 1990s, Russian people have lost trust in Chinese products. In sum, though those speculative producers can make short-term profits, customers will gradually lose confidence in Shanghais products, which is to the detriment of reputation of “Made in China”. As a result, Shanghais phenomenon should be discouraged.Topic 9The Disadvantages of Big Class LearningOne of my friends complains to me about his relation with his professors saying that there is a far distance between the students and the faculties. As a matter of fact, this is not surprising. Due to the expanded enrollment of college students, many universities can not find enough faculties. It has been so common that hundreds of students crowd in a class listening to a professor. They seldom have enough time to communicate in private. As far as I am concerned, the big class learning has many disadvantages. First of all, the big class learning is by no means conducive to the development of the critical thinking of the students. The college education is still the elite education. Therefore, the quality of the graduates is very important. They need to be competent to get a decent job in the job market. The making and development of such qualities are done, most of the time, in classroom.Meanwhile, the professors are playing a crucial role in molding the soul of the students. The big class learning cannot manage such kind of tasks. Once the students study in a very big class, they may become very lazy or even play truant. As for the professors, they may not have so much time to talk with the students since they are so many. This may lead to the second disadvantage of the big class learning: the gap and distance between the two parties. Originally, the college campus is the place where the professors and the students enjoy the fun of doing research and pursuing the truth. They may work as one to contribute to the flowering of the scholarship. However, the fact is the students often feel that they are disconnected with their distinguished professors. The students cannot find their instructors during the time of need. The last disadvantage of the big class learning is that the whole education may get bad or even worse. The big class learning may cause the commercialization of the education, which will be a very serious problem. To sum up, the big class learning has more disadvantages than advantages. It will affect the quality of the graduates as well as the whole education cause in China. The effective measure to deal with it is to limit the enrollment of college students to make a better national education.。

Human life can not continue without science and technology. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. Owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man's landing on the moon has now come true.Science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. Without the base, the skyscraper can't be built. Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. I rethought my decision and tried out....and got a lead in the play.Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decision for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encounter and helped me make the right decision.I went and it was amazing.Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspective and experience.专八写作背诵范文第03篇People have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based on respective ground. Those who argue for the playing time for children suggest that children at a very early age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people are partially right, for it is true that young children can hardly concentrate. Their attention on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for shorter periods, can't we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to study, young children are occupied with learning but not with playing. Those who argue for children's early commencement for formal education believe that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of learning helps develop children's mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ability to understand and the ability to do simple calculation. Children's habit of studying and love for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the sound foundation for their future studies.Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young children much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habit needs a long time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for before the love for playing is established.专八写作背诵范文第04篇Living in university dormitories or apartments in the community?I think it is better for college students to live on campus during their first two years, and then move into an apartment for off-campus life, while juniors and seniors need the independence of off-campus life. Student’s needs change over four years, so their housing should too. Living on-campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things are done. Finding an apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord's regulations, cooking meals, and figuring out budgets are all good practice for life after graduation. This kind of independence helps older students grow in adulthood.Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on around them. Campus can be like little worlds of their own. There are few children or older people and everyone is focused on education. Getting to know neighbors who are not students is good for studentscoming from difference places. It is a chance to find out what other people think and feel.I think a combination of two years on-campus and two years off-campus is a winning combination for most students.专八写作背诵范文第05篇:如何看待在校大学生打工【英文范文】In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Support your opinion by using specific reasons and details. In many countries it is common for teenagers to take part-time jobs while they are still in high school, while in other societies this is virtually unheard of. In the latter situation, students are expected to spend all of their time on their studies and consider schoolwork their "job". In my opinion, students benefit more from a more balanced lifestyle, which may include working at apart-time job. Therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to work while studying. While it is true that a student's most important goal must be to learn and to do well at his studies, it does not need to be the only goal. In fact, a life which consists of only study is not balanced and may cause the student to miss out on other valuable learning experiences. In addition to bringing more balance to a student's life, part-time work can broaden his range of experience. He will have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. Furthermore, work helps a student to develop greater independence, and earning his own pocket money can teach him how to handle his finances. Finally, a part-time job can help a student to develop a greater sense of responsibility, both for his own work and for that of the team he works with. For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students would benefit from taking a part-time job while they are in high school. Of course, they must be careful not to let it take up too much of their time because study is still their primary responsibility. In sum, living a balanced life is the best way to be successful.专八写作背诵范文第08篇:书本知识与实际经验【题目】It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?【范文】Book Knowledge vs. ExperienceKnowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachers and practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gain from books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have no opportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in the world and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by reading about them in books. We can also develop our analytical skills and learn how to view and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we can learn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won’t repeat the mistakes of others and can build on their achievements.Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge. It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true, whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the best way to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary to act. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation. Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of books to practical experience, making an already meaningful experience more meaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledge remains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe that knowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquired from books.【参考译文】书本知识与实际经验获得知识的来源有很多,其中包括书本、老师,以及实际经验,而每一种都有其优点。

2024英语专业八级作文

2024英语专业八级作文2024 English Major Band 8 Composition Sample The world is in a constant state of flux, with trends emerging and fading like the tide. These tides of changetouch every aspect of our lives, from the mundane to the momentous. One such trend, gaining significant momentum in recent years, is the growing emphasis on personal development and self-improvement. This phenomenon, while undeniably positive inits intention, demands a nuanced analysis, for its implications are far-reaching and multifaceted. The driving forces behind this surge in self-improvement are manifold. The pervasive nature of social media, with its meticulously curated depictions of success and fulfillment, undoubtedly plays a role. It presents a constant stream of aspirational imagery, subtly fueling a sense of inadequacy and prompting individuals to seek betterment. The competitive job market, demanding ever-evolving skillsets and adaptability, further reinforces this drive. The need to stay ahead of the curve, to continuously acquire new knowledge and honeexisting talents, becomes paramount in a world characterized by rapidtechnological advancements and shifting paradigms. However, this pursuit of self-improvement, while commendable in its essence, is not without its potential pitfalls. The very technology that fuels this trend – social media – can also become a breeding ground for unhealthy comparisons and unrealistic expectations. The curated perfection projected online can breed a sense of inadequacy and self-doubt, pushing individuals into a relentless cycle of striving that leaves them feeling perpetually insufficient. The constant pressure to optimize and upgrade oneself can lead to anxiety and burnout, as individuals struggle to live up to the idealized versions of themselves they encounter online. Furthermore, the commercialization of self-improvement, with its plethora of self-help books, seminars, and online courses, often promotes a one-size-fits-all approach that neglects the inherent complexities of individual journeys. This mass-marketed approach, while potentially beneficial for some, risks oversimplifying personal growth and failing to address the unique challenges and circumstances that shape individual lives. The focus can shift from genuine self-discovery and personal fulfillment to a superficial pursuit of external validation and achievement. Itis crucial, therefore, to approach self-improvement with a discerning eye, embracing its positive potential while remaining mindful of its potential drawbacks. Cultivating a healthy sense of self-awareness, identifying one's genuine aspirations and values, is paramount. It is essential to distinguish between genuine self-improvement driven by intrinsic motivation and a compulsive pursuit of self-optimization fueled by external pressures. The focus should be on personal growth and fulfillment, on acquiring knowledge and skills that enrich one's life and contribute to personal satisfaction, rather than chasing fleeting trends and seeking external validation. Ultimately, the journey of self-improvement is a deeply personal one, unique to each individual. It requires introspection, self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace the imperfections that make us human. While external resources and guidance can provide valuable support, the true journey lies within, in exploring our own unique strengths and weaknesses, identifying our passions, and striving to become the best versions of ourselves, not for the world, but for ourselves. This mindful approach, grounded in self-awareness and driven by intrinsic motivation, will pave the way for genuine personal growth and a more fulfilling life.。

专八作文范文Topic 1 Should Traditional Chinese Etiquette[n.礼仪,礼节] Be Taught in Class?Throughout most of China’s long history, the relationships between people were based oncarefully prescribed[decided by a rule]forms of behavior, that is, etiquette.Learning and following etiquette is so importantthat people are always judged by how closelythey follow these rules of behaviors. For those who do not follow those prescribed rules of conduct, they are regarded as uncivilized barbarians[野蛮人].However,as China has been increasingly entangled[involved in a situation that is difficult to escape from] in the global village, many Chinese people, especially the young, have lost some traditions because of the influences of Western cultures.According to a famous professor, the majority of Chinese college students have not hadsystematic training on traditional Chinese etiquette. As for me, traditional etiquette should betaught in class.Firstly, if college students can receivea systematic education in traditional etiquette in class, they can get more prepared for the future. As is known, college students usually have learnt some traditional etiquettethrough daily interaction with friends and relatives, but the process is time-consuming[耗时的].They have to be sensitive enough to observe other people’s behaviorsand then know what proper behaviors in different social situations are.Sometimes the learning process is by trial and error[试错法,反复试验].They can only form right behaviorsafter breaking the rules of conductand being corrected by the costly consequence. If they have already taken a systematic etiquette course in college, they can follow proper etiquette and have a more guaranteed[if something is guaranteed, you will definitely have it] future.Secondly, as these meticulous[过度重视细节的] rules of conduct have been formedthroughout Chinese history, they are unique Chinese characteristicsand are inseparable to Chinese culture. With the advent[the coming of an important event] of globalization, western culture is so influentialthat many young people often look to Western customsand etiquette as being fashionable. For example, nowadays most young women in Chinawould like to wear western-style white dresses and veils[面纱]at wedding while traditional Chinese weddings feature red gowns[女长服,长袍] for brides and white is an absolute taboo[禁忌]. In the long term,if the trend[趋向,时尚]to adopt western etiquette can not be curbed[(curb):抑制],the Chinese generations in the future will lose their cultural identity.Furthermore, the extinction of Chinese etiquettewill be to the detriment of[harming] the diversity of global culture. To some extent, the course can serve to arouse[唤醒]college students’ cultural prideand help to preserve[保存]and further develop Chinese culture. In conclusion, taking traditional Chinese etiquette in college will not onlymake graduates more prepared for their future, but also can constitute[=be, equal]an important measure[an action, a step] for college studentsto form Chinese cultural identityand therefore to preserve Chinese traditionand further develop it.Topic 2 Are Nowadays College GraduatesNot as Competent[有能力的] as Before? As an economic rule goes, when supply outweighs[(outweigh):v.(在重量、价值或重要性上)超过] demand, the price decreases[(decrease):v.减少].The same seems true for the current situation for college graduates.Since 1999,the central government has implemented[应用的]the Grand College Enrollment[n.登记,注册,入伍] Plan[n.&vt.计划,打算],with the total number of college graduateson the increase in the following years. But the boomed[(boom):.激增,繁荣,迅速发展] economy does not provide enough jobsfor those graduates coming out at a time.Therefore[ad.因此,所以],many people reason that college graduates are notas competent as beforefor many of them have difficulties in finding jobs. But I disagree with this conclusion.Firstly, admittedly[adv.不可否认地,诚然],there are some college graduates who are not competent, but these students can not represent all the students.Due[a.预期的;应给的] to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, more and more high school students have access[n.接近;通道,入口]to the higher education.Inevitably[ad.不可避免地], the standard has been lowered;otherwise, university can not admit so many applicants[(applicant):n.申请人].While those smart students in high schoolsare more likely to have excellent performance, other not-so-good students would have difficulties in college learning. As a result, those graduates with bad performance in college can notdemonstrate[vt.说明;论证;表露]the value of higher learning to the societyand hence[ad.因此,所以;今后]they gradually form the incompetent image of college graduates.Secondly, those who hold this negative opiniondo not take the social context[n.(事或人物等的)来龙去脉,背景] into consideration. As is known,in the period when China carried out planned economic policies, college graduates did not need toworry about their jobs, for “iron-bowls” waited for them after graduation. But after the reform of higher education, college graduates have to find jobs for themselves. When hundreds of thousands of graduates competefor a limited number of job vacancies[空缺额],there are inevitably many who can not procure[vt.获得,取得,促成] ideal jobs.Besides,employment[n.就业] is always influenced byglobal and national economy. When economy slows down, the corporate[n.公司的]world would not recruit[v.征募] as many employees as before. For example, in 2009, many college graduates, from both prestigious[adj.有声望的] universities and less-known universities, have difficulties in hunting jobs.In this sense,it is not college graduates that are incompetent, instead, it is the social context that is unfavorable[adj.否定的,不利的]to college graduates. As factors combine to lead to a result, one can not simply reach conclusions withouttaking various factors into account.Otherwise[ad.另外;在其他方面], one would make reductionist mistakes. In this case, those who think college students are notas competent as before have made this kind of mistake. They just attribute[v.把(某事)…归因于,认为是…结果]college graduates’ difficulties in finding jobs to their incompetence, without exploring the social and economic situations.Topic 3 Is It Meaningful[adj.有意义的]to Receive College Education[n.教育;教育学]?Given the fact that many college studentshave difficulties in finding jobs in the recent, thousands of high school students are reportedto refuse to take the National CollegeEntrance Examination[n.检查;考试].The news seems so convincing[(convince):vt.使确信,使信服] that many students, their parents, and the society reach the conclusionthat receiving college education is a waste of time and money.Undoubtedly[adv.毫无疑问地], these students can earn[vt.赚得,挣得;获得]some money working in big citiesor running their own business in the near future. However, I am of opinion that this view is myopic[a.近视的],which is to the detriment of personal developmentand China’s overall[n.工装裤 a.全面的]growth in the long term.Firstly, in terms of personal development, university is not a vocational[a.职业的] training center despite the factthat a university diploma[n.毕业文凭,毕业证书] indicates graduatesare more likely to find decent[adj.合适的] jobs. Instead, universityis a place for personal cultivation[n.培养] and improvement. In universities, students will learn to find their real interests, perfect their personality, and form right outlooks toward the world.Furthermore, students will learn to gather, analyze, and evaluate[v.评价,估计] informationso that they can resolve[vt.解决;决心 n.决心] problems in their lives. For those who are suspicious[adj.怀疑的]of the value of higher learning,to some extent, they can be regarded as plutolatry[财富崇拜,拜金主义].They worship[n.礼拜;崇拜 vt.崇拜] money and believethat money is everything in their lives.Secondly, in terms of national growth, the advancement of a nation[n.民族,国家] is characterizedby its greatness of high education. In this sense, universities are the centers of researchand academic exploration. Take theUnited[adj.统一的;联合的]States[(state):n.州;国家;政府] for instance.Among the top 100 universities in the world, the majority of them are located in the United States. The advancement of US high education is indicative[adj.表示的,暗示的] ofthe fact that those universities produce the most Nobel[n.诺贝尔]Prize laureates[(laureate):a.戴桂冠的,用月桂树造的,荣誉的]in comparison with other countries.American universities also turn out to be a magnet[n.磁铁,磁石,磁体]for most smart students around the world. Those universities contribute[v.导致]tremendous share to the US’ growththrough scientific and technological[a.技术的] support. In China,if the belief that receiving college education is a waste of timeand money can not be corrected in time,it is inevitable[a.不可避免的,必然的]that China can only reap[v.得到,获得(报酬、成果等);收割,收获] short-term[a.短期的] GDP growthbut will be deprived[(deprive):v.剥夺]ofopportunity tobecome a competitive[adj.竞争的,比赛的] international players in the long run,for the human resource will be drained[(drain):vt.排去;放水 n.耗竭] eventually[ad.终于;最后]. In sum, receiving college education will benefit both individual and the country.Indicative of the dire[adj.可怕的;悲惨的]job marketfor college graduates is not the uselessness of college education.Instead, college education means we should study harderto make a full preparation for the future.Topic 4 Can College Village Heads Plan Really Help?Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, the number of university graduateshas been on the increasesince the central government started implementing[实现] the plan.Though the plan helps improve our national quality,it creates pressure for the job markets. With so many college students coming out at a time, many graduates have difficulties in finding suitablejobs. In order to create more jobs, the government encourages college graduatesto work in villages of 28 provinces and regions[(region):n.地区,地带;领域] with a view that rural[a.农村的,田园的]administration will be strengthened[(strengthen):v.加强,巩固;变强,实力增强] at the same time.As a result, tens of thousands college graduates have been appointed[(appoint):vt.任命,委任;约定]as village officialsin the rural areas. It appears that this plan helps alleviate[v.减轻,缓解,缓和] the pressurecaused by graduate[n.毕业生 vi.大学毕业] employment, but I do not think the plan will work in the long run.Firstly, after serving as village officials in the rural areas for two years, the majority of those college village officials will start tolook for jobs in the job market again, aggravating[(aggravate):v.加剧,加重] the pressure of the job market. Some may argue that the number of those village officialswho enter the job market again is balancedby the number of new college graduateswho would be appointed as village officials. The truth is that while those students havespent two years in the rural areas, they do not gain enough experience in the corporate worldand are likely to forget what they have learnt in college. In this sense, they are not guaranteed tofind decent jobs again.Besides, when working in the rural areas, these students with higher degrees are respectedby village people, and are likely to get accustomed tofeeling superior[adj.优良的,较好的]to people around them. One can imaginethey would probably be frustrated when they work withthose who hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees.Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demandof our society are unbalanced[a.不平衡的],the imbalance[n.不平衡,不均衡]can be obtained by increasing available jobsor decreasing[(decrease):v.减少]the supply ofcollege graduates, which means the reduction[n.减少,降低]of college enrollment.Given the fact that the economy slows down in the recent,it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good terms for graduates suchas well-paid salary and residential[adj.提供住宿的;居住的;住宅的]certificate[n.证书,证件,执照] guarantee[v.保证,担保],the government can create more jobs in the short term, but does not provide long-term[adj.长期的] remedy[n.治疗措施,补救办法].In this sense, the plan does not solve[vt.解答,解释,解决]the fundamental imbalancebetween the supply and the demand of college graduates. In sum,the plan to encourage college graduates to work in the rural areascan only provide a temporary[a.暂时的,临时的] remedy for the job market.I think the government shouldrecognize the fundamental imbalanceand find the way back to elite[a.杰出的 n.中坚分子] education.Topic 5 Should College Education Be V ocation-Oriented?Due to the increased enrollment of college students in recent years, the total number of graduates coming out at the same timeis such that many college graduates have difficultiesin procuring[(procure):vt.获得,取得,促成] jobs, especially when the economy is suffering slowdown[n.降低速度,减速].And then many scholars suggestthat colleges should lay emphasis on vocational trainingby setting relative courses in the college curriculum[n.课程]so that graduates are more likely to be employed. Taking the employers’ requirement[n.要求]into consideration, that is, working experience, the suggestion seems reasonable. However,I think, even if universities become vocation-oriented,it can not serve well for the employment. Besides, the vocational orientation[n.向东;定位;方向] will do harm to the higher education.Firstly, the suggestion seems to be based onthe fact that new college graduates may have learned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities. In accord with this suggestion,if college students have received enough vocational trainingand gained experience in internship[n.实习生身份],they are likely to get employed.Admittedly,self-improvement[n.自我改造]is crucial[adj.至关重要的] for new graduates to hunt jobs. But the suggestion does not take into account job vacancies in the present.Though China’s economy keeps growingat a rate of about 9% in the recentand the number of jobs does increase, too many graduates coming out at a timewill create great pressure for the job market. As an official stated,“the grand college enrollment plan isone of the main reasons for the current unemployment[n.失业,失业人数] i ssue”. Therefore, even if college students have enough experience and skills, will they succeed in procuring jobswhen there are no positions available at all?Secondly, vocational orientation is to the detriment of the higher learning in the long term.Let us begin with the difference in goals between university and vocational training. As college students may decide to finish his studies after graduation or may continue at a higher level, university courses should thus provideboth basic knowledge and a sound basis for further studies. In vocational training, the goals of a given course are distinct, that is, the course is designed to teach trainees[(trainee):n.拉受训练的人]basic knowledgeand skills. In consequence,if universities are vocation-oriented,students at college can not get prepared in classfor a higher level of learning. Predictably[ad.可预言地],the pyramid[n.金字塔]of higher learning will crumble[v.弄碎,崩毁]if universities can not produce enough qualified students. In conclusion,vocation-orientation may help improve graduates’ skillsbut it can not increase the number of available positions. The suggestion just offers a wrong remedy, and will do harm to the higher learning.Topic 6 On Following SuitAs people respond to incentives[(incentive):n.刺激,鼓励],they will change their behaviorsif they perceive[vt.察觉,发觉;理解] that costs or benefits change. This principle seems to find wide applicationin our daily lives. When college graduates learn that receiving a master degree will give theman upper hand in the job market, many decide to take part in post-graduate entrance examinations. In China, it is regarded as following suit.Though we admire those who pride themselveson sticking to their ideals and principles, odds may not be against those who follow suit. Generally[ad.一般地;通常地] speaking, there are both advantages and disadvantages of following suit.Firstly, following suit is indicative of the factthat followers have no indispensable[a.必不可少的,必需的] beliefsor fixed principlesand hence they are flexible[adj.能随机应变的,有灵活性的]in the vicissitudes[(vicissitude):n.变化,变迁,荣枯,盛衰] of lives. When the social context changes and opportunitiesarise[vi.出现;由…引起],those followers are the first to respond and make decisions.Take the English training service for example. In early 1990s,increasing number of college graduates decided to study overseasand hence English training service was in large demand.Given that forerunners[(forerunner):n.先驱;前兆] had make a fortuneby providing training programs to those graduates, many businessmen just followed suitand established several training schools. Undoubtedly, those who followed suitwhen the market did not reach saturation[n.饱和(状态);浸透] did make money.Secondly,it is noteworthy[a.值得注目的,显著的]that following suit can avoid making mistakes. For those forerunners, there is no previous[a.先的;前的ad.在前] information at their hand, and therefore,it will take a long time to learn and improve by trial and error.During the period of trial and error, forerunners will encounter[v.遇到 n.相见,相遇] unexpected difficulties and pressures. As a result, when those become successful in certain domains[(Domain):n.领土,领域],they have proved that the path will lead to success, providing both pros and cons[(con):n.反对的理由、论点或立场].On the contrary[a.相反的 n.相反],followers need not experience the process of trial and error. They can just imitate[vt.模仿,仿效;仿制]their forerunners’ proven pattern of behaviorsand have easier access to success. There are also some disadvantages of following suit. When there are so many followers, the world will become crowdedand odds are against those later followers. Furthermore, following suit prevents innovation[n.新方法,新办法,革新] and creation, which is to the detriment of our society. However, whether one should follow suit ornot is not simply a to-be-or-not-to-be question.A basic assumption[n.假定,设想]of individual person is that everyone is rational[a.理性的;出于理性的].So one should carefully calculate costsand benefits in specific circumstancesbefore they decide to follow suit or not.Topic 7 Should Chinese Language CourseBe Adopted[(adopt):v.采纳,采取]in College Curricula[n.课程]?The moment I saw the topic,a post originally submitted[(submit):vt.使服从 vi.服从]in Peking[n.北京]University BBS[布告栏系统] occurred to me.The post composed[(compose):vt.组成,构成;创作] of a conversationbetween a Chinese young man, the author, and a waiter coming from Japan. The author suffered frustrationwhen the waiter asked him about Chinese culture. Surprisingly[ad.令人惊讶地], the Japanese demonstrated[(demonstrate):vt.说明;论证;表露] thathe got command of more Chinese culturethan most Chinese young people.I do not know what your initial[a.最初的;词首的] response is supposingthat you were set in the circumstance. As a matter of fact,Chinese language course has drawn scant[adj.不足的,欠缺的] attentionamong college students, for many students lay their emphasis on English learning.I am of opinion thatChinese language course should be setin the category[n.种类,类别]of compulsory[a.必须做的] coursesin college curriculum.Firstly, it is high time for college studentsto re-learn Chinese language. For many Chinese students, they just learn Chinese languagefor examinations’ sake[n.缘故,理由]in elementary[a.基本的;初级的] schoolsand high schools. In other words, many learn Chinese language to get high scores instead of grasping[(grasp):vt.抓紧;掌握 n.抓] the essence[n.要素,实质] of Chinese culture. In fact, we can not measure one’s understanding of culture by how many scoreshe get in the examinations orhow many poems and essays he has memorized. What matters is whether one can figure outthe gist[n.要点,要旨,依据] and facilitate[vt.使便利,使(更)容易] his lifethrough what he gains from the learning. In college, students are not imposed[(impose):vt.把…强加;征(税)]as much pressure as in high schoolin learning Chinese language.Besides, they are more mature[a.成熟的 vt.使成熟] than in childhoodand have the ability to think critically. If they do not seize the chanceto re-learn the Chinese language, odds are that they can not inherit[vt.继承(传统等)] wisdomsof our ancestors[(ancestor):n.祖宗,祖先]and not get prepared for the future.Secondly, since western cultures are looming[(loom):v.赫然出现] large in Chinawith the advent of globalization,Chinese traditional culture seems to be endangered[(endanger):vt.危及].Many people, especially the youth, are interested in learning foreign language, English in particular, and their cultures. They prefer to watch American movies, Japanese cartoons, and listen to foreign music. While western cultural products are well received, the popularity[n.普及,流行] of the Chinese counterpart[n.与对方地位相当的人;与另一方作用相当物] is on the decrease[v.减少].When foreign cultures are so prevalent[adj.流行的,普遍的] in China, will our future generation figure out our Chinese cultural identity? As the basic manifestation[n.显示,证明,示威运动] of culture,Chinese language deserves[(deserve):v.应得] more attentionand better treatment.Chinese universities shouldtake the responsibilities to preserve and develop our traditional culture, Chinese language in particular. All in all,as traditional Chinese culture and wisdom manifest[vt.表明 a.明白的]themselves in Chinese language, adopting the course in the curricula willnot only educate college students, but also help preserve and develop Chinese culture. Topic 8 College Students’ Image[n.形象] Reconsidered[(reconsider):v.再考虑,重新考虑] Nowadays, college studentscomprised[(comprise):v.构成,组成]of the post-[adj.後]80 generation and the post-90 generationare always put in the storm of criticisms. To list a few of these criticisms, they are accused[(accuse):vt.指责;归咎于]of being spoiled[(spoil):vt.损坏,糟蹋;宠坏] by their parents, for the majority of them are the only childrenof their families.Brought up in the social context of opening up andreform, they are always renounced[(renounce):v.宣布放弃,抛弃] by the older generationthat they have been westernized[(westernize):v.西洋化,欧化] looking to western culturesas fashionable and being cynical[adj.愤世嫉俗的] the Chinese counterpart.Given more and more college graduateshave difficulties in finding decent jobs, they are perceived[(perceive):vt.察觉,发觉;理解] by the older generationsas not competent as college students of the older generations. However,I am of opinion that the aforementioned[a.上述的,前述的]negative image is imposed upon the post-80 and -90 generations, which is unfair.Firstly, as the majority ofpost-80 and -90 generation college students are at schoolor in the lower layers of social myriad[adj.许多,无数],they are vulnerable[a.易受伤害的,脆弱的]to their superior’s judgments. As is known, those older generations were brought upin a less affluent[a.丰富的,富裕的]and isolated society, they were denied a favorable social background. College students in the pasthad to work harder to be admitted dueto the limited resources of higher learning. When they were in college, many could not gain allowance[n.津贴,补贴,零用钱] from their familiesso that they got into the habit of frugality[n.节俭,俭省].Before the adoption[n.收养,领养]of opening up policy,it’s difficult for them to get access to foreign cultures, not to mention American movies and Japanese cartoons. As a result, those older generations are likelyto deem[v.认为,视为,断定为]any behaviors differentfrom their own experiences as unacceptable[adj.不能接受的]and due to their seniority[n.资深;职位高;年长,年高]they are able to express their judgmentson various occasions. On the contrary, the post-80 and -90 generations can not voicetheir opinions in a society dominated[(dominate):v.支配,控制]by the older generations.Secondly, admittedly, part of the post-80 and -90 college studentsfit into the negative image, but they can not represent all the college students. According to our experience, there are students who are obsessed[(obsess):v.困扰] with computer games, who spend a lot of time keeping love affairs, and who spend money in an extravagant[adj.奢侈的] manner. In comparison with these students, the majority of the post-80 and -90 studentscan fit into an ideal model of college students. Some absorb[vt.吸收;使专心]themselves in the library all day long. Some take part-time jobs in their spare time topay for tuition[n.教学,讲授;学费]fees. Some voluntarily[(voluntary):a.自愿的,志愿的]go to the remote[a.相隔很远的;冷淡的]areas to teach poverty-stricken[adj.贫困的] students.I was wondering why the media[n.新闻媒体]do notprovide more reports of those positiveaspects of the post-80 and -90 generation college students. On all accounts, the negative image is imposedby those established older generations, and can not represent all the college students. As a member of the post 80 and 90 college students,I believe that we will still bethe backbone[n.脊椎,志气,骨干,支柱;主干]of our society in the future.Topic 9 Should Public[adj.公共的,公众的] Announcement[n.宣布,宣告]of Disciplinary[a.训练的,规律的,训诫的] Measures[(measure):vt.量,测量n.分量]Be Abolished[(abolish):vt.废止,革除,取消]?In the recent,it is reportedthat students commit suicides[(suicide):n.自杀] after school authoritiesmake public announcement of disciplinary measuresagainst those culprits[(culprit):n.犯人,罪犯,刑事被告]’ violating[(violate):v.违反,违背]certain school regulations[(regulation):n.规则,规章;管理].Oftentimes[ad.时常地],those culprits’ parents would sue schools for compensations[(compensation):n.赔偿].No matter how much money they are compensated[(compensate):v.补偿,赔偿],it can not change the factthat the dead students are not to regenerate[adj.改过自新的,新生的].Some educationalists[(educationalist):教育家,教育学者] hencesuggest that public announcement of disciplinary measures be abolished. They argue that students are fragile[a.易损坏的,易受伤害的]in psychology[n.心理学]for they are the only childrenand usually get too much protection from families. But should they get away with punishments?I do not think so.Firstly, as students have alreadyborne in their mind the consequencesthat if they break certain school regulations, they must take the responsibility. They should accept any due punishments.I do not believe that those students have no idea of what those regulations are or any previous regulation[n.规则,规章;管理] enforcements[(enforcement):n.实施,执行]. Generally speaking, they are repeatedly told not to breach[v.毁坏,泄密n.缺口] school norms[(norm):n.标准,准则]and regulations by their head teachers and parents. Before students sit certain exams, they will be reminded again ofdisposing[(dispose):vi.去掉,丢掉;销毁]of any material relevant[adj.有关的]to examinations. They will also be informed what consequences they are to bear if they don’t conform[v.一致,符合,相似] to the regulations. Therefore, if they stillintend to break norms and regulations, they must accept any forms of punishment without complaints.Otherwise, norms and regulations would have no bonding[(bond):n.债券] effects.Secondly, the purpose of public announcement of disciplinary measuresis to help those culprits by supervision[n.监督,指导] of the public. As people tend[vt.照管,照料,护理 vi.走向,趋向;倾向] to hold their mistakesfrom being revealed to other people, they actually avoid acknowledging[(acknowledge):v.就…表示谢意,致谢] their mistakesand are unwilling to correct them. After the publication of their mistakes, culprits would be judged by their classmates, friends and teachers, and hencethey can be imposed pressures not to err[v.做错,出。

The Relationship between Historical Grandeur and the FutureGreatnessGiven to the humiliating history of last two centuries, Chinese people always make efforts to build a powerful China. In the recent debate over the rise of China, some grass-root scholars argue that since China had achieved grandeur in ancient times, Chinese people are likely to lead the world again. The logic seems plausible, but is there any causal relationship between historical grandeur and China’s future greatness?Personally, I do not agree with this opinion. Firstly, the argument assumes that they can predict the future by finding evidence in the course of history. This mistake was criticized by Karl Popper in his influential book The Open Society and Its Enemies. In the book, he lenientlessly attacks ’historicism’,which means an approach to make historical predictions by discovering the patterns that underlie the evolution of history. In other words, precedent can not be used to explain what will happen in the future. In China’s case, undoubtedly, it reached the historical peak in Tang Dynasty. At that time, China was preponderant in the world, for no countries could successfully challenge its superiority. Now consider the world situation at that time. The world was separated by oceans, mountains, and deserts, for the communications means were so retarded that China enjoyed a relatively safe environment except the threats from neighboring countries. Nowadays, is it reasonable to predict that China’s greatness in the future is based on Tang Dynasty’s preponderance when the world is becoming smaller and more intermingled?Secondly, indicative of finding evidence in the course of history is China’s current weakness. Though China has surpassed Germany as the third largest economy, its per capita income still ranks in the developing country category. There is still a wide gap between China and the developed countries in terms of science and technology, education, military strength, and etc. Given that China is still a developing country, it is understandable that we can gain inspiration from the historical grandeur, but we can not use it as evidence to support our goodwill. What matters a great China in the future is the efforts we are making at present. In conclusion, we can see that there is no causal relationship between China’s grand history and its future. Historical grandeur can only serve as inspiration to urge us to make more efforts. As one proverb goes, many hands make light work. Chinese people will build a great nation in the future with combined efforts. The Importance of Hope in One’s LifeThere are many occasions in our lives on which we may feel like giving up, such as accidents, losing the beloved one, terminal illness, failing in an important exam, losing a job, and so on. Those life changing events can strike us without warning, oftentimes several at a time, seemingly layer upon layer, weighing us down. It seems that the seas of life are so rough and stormy that we are likely to get weary trying to keep our little boat from sinking. However, if we have hopes, we will not let those life changing events get the best of us and succumb to helplessness. Firstly, though hope is not an objective existence, it can arouse optimistic feelings for the future. As many psychologists’ research indicates, reflecting on one’s failures is generally good, but when it takes too much time, it is dangerous, for it soon becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that will quickly break every slice of confidence that we have in ourselves. That is how those who do not have hopes deal with these ups and downs. However, if people have hopes and always look forward to the future, they are able to envision a subjective picture of brightness in their mind, and take different measures to live a happy life.Secondly, having a hope helps people get rid of doubts and fears of day-to-day life and the challenges they must overcome to stay on an even kee. This can be best illustrated in clinics. Medical practitioners are always sensitive to the effects of their words so that their words might be acceptable to state the facts in such a way that they do not take away all possibility of hope. Even if the patient does die, the time that he or she is given will be spent better if the patient has been allowed some hope, as opposed to spending the remaining lifetime in a state of perpetual fear that each day is supposed to be the last.On all accounts, indicative of having a hope is the optimism of our lives. So long as we still have hopes in our heart, we will always look forward to the future. Hope can also help us remove doubts and fears in our daily lives. In any sense, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things”, as Andy Dufresne said in the Shawshank Redemption. On the Importance of Self-disciplinedThere are many college students who are bad at keeping themselves in line. When they are required to finish some assignments, they will barely bother to do it unless they deem that they may be criticized by their teachers.Instead, they spend their time playing computer games and watching episodes of TV programs, as well as chatting with friends on MSN or QQ. They oftentimes procrastinate so terribly that they have done nothing before they go to bed. Despite the fact that every day they tell themselves that it will be a fresh start, they just succeed in repeating their procrastination. Undoubtedly, these students have not realized the importance of self-discipline in their lives.Firstly, the world is full of temptations to live an undisciplined life. In today’s society, they live in a world where temptations are almost everywhere. There are a variety of TV programs that tempt them into knowing what have become of the hero and heroine in the last episode. There are various occasions on which they find it hard to decline our friends’invitation. Though they make efforts to focus on professors’ assignments, they usually surrender themselves to the mercy of entertainment activities and tell themselves to put the homework later on only to find out that the homework is not finished at last. In consequence, they have no respect for themselves. In fact, they hate themselves for being like this. But whatever they aim for a change, they just fall back into their old ways. This is what their lives will be like if they do not possess self-discipline.Secondly, as various interviews given by most of the successful people in the world show, self-discipline is one of the qualities that help people succeed in their chosen fields. People who have the ability to reject instant gratification in favor of something better, to follow actions by overcoming addictions, procrastination and laziness, to resist temptations and distractions, are more likely to attain aims and goals. On the contrary, lack of self-discipline leads to failure to reach goals, even minor ones, and to loss, health, obesity and other troubles. In sum, self-discipline is one of the essential qualities that contribute effectively to a man’s progress and development. While the world is teeming with temptations and distractions, one can only succeed by learning self-discipline.Who should Take the Blame for Food Contamination?Nowadays various kinds of news coverage on food contamination has been heard of. People are in the fear of the milk food contamination, the poisonous fish, the pesticide-left vegetables and so on. Some people blame it for those companies’ lack of responsibilities, and others criticize the government. In my opinion, as the governor and supervisor of the foodsafety, government has unshirkable responsibility for food contamination. On the one hand, the governmental institutions don’t perform their duty of supervision well. Citizens pay taxes for the service of the government. So the latter has the responsibility for the food safety of every person. They should develop stringent standards for food safety, and strictly examine the products of every company on schedule. But if they are serious about their duty, how can so many cases come out? It is because of their act of omission that the condemned food enters the market. The customers are disappointed again and again, and they will not trust the quality supervision departments any more. The government should squarely face the problem and take a down-to-earth attitude toward it.On the other hand, the government didn’t take decisive and effective actions to thoroughly rectify and regulate the order of the food market. Most of the food contamination cases are treated after the media coverage that those cases are not seized by the governmental institutions. It is believed that the examining techniques and methods of government are advanced, but they are blind to the illegal act. If the media and the public didn’t put pressure on them, they would go on escaping from the reality. What’s more, the related law should be enforced. The criminal knew clearly the harm of the contaminated food to people, but he still did the misdeeds. Because the punishment for food contamination is not serious, and the profits are much higher than producing standard goods, this kind of crime is repeated. There is an urgent need to strengthen food monitoring and intensify legislation and its implementation.Food is the first necessity of people. The government has the responsibility to protect every citizen and regulate the food market. Throughout the country we must resolutely implement the following principles: the law must be observed, law enforcement must be strict, law-breakers must be dealt with accordingly and all persons are equal before the law. Only in this way can the government perform its duty and people enjoy the food safely.。

Should Traditional Chinese Etiquette Be Taught in Class?Throughout most of China’s long history, the relationships between people were based on carefully prescribed forms of behavior, that is, etiquette. They have to be sensitive enough to observe other people’s behaviors and then know what proper behaviors in different social situations are.Sometimes the learning process is by trial and error. To some extent, the course c an serve to arouse college students’ cultural pride and help to preserve and further develop Chinese culture. In conclusion, taking traditional Chinese etiquette in college will not only make graduates more prepared for their future, but also can constitute an important measure for college students to form Chinese cultural identity and therefore to preserve Chinese tradition and further develop it.2. Are Nowadays College Graduates Not as Competent as Before? As an economic rule goes, when supply outweighs demand, the price decreases. When hundreds of thousands of graduates compete for a limited number of job vacancies, there are inevitably many who can not procure ideal jobs. Otherwise, one would make reductionist(化约主义者)mistakes. In this case, those who think college students are not as competent as before have made this kind of mistake. They just attribute college graduates’ difficulties in finding jobs to their incompetence, without exploring the social and economic situations.3. Is It Meaningful to Receive College Education?Given the fact that many college students have difficulties in finding jobs in the recent, thousands of high school students are reported to refuse to take the National College Entrance Examination. For those who are suspicious of the value of higher learning, to some extent, they can be regarded as plutolatry(拜金主义). American universities also turn out to be amagnet for most smart students around the world. Those universities contribute tremendous share to the US’ growth through scientific and technological support. Can College Village Heads Plan Really Help?Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, the number of university graduates has been on the increase since the central government started implementing the plan. As a result, tens of thousands college graduates have been appointed as village officials in the rural areas. One can imagine they would probably be frustrated when they work with those who hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees. Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demand of our society are unbalanced, the imbalance can be obtained by increasing available jobs or decreasing the supply of college graduates, which means the reduction of college enrollment. Given the fact that the economy slows down in the recent, it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good terms for graduates such as well-paid salary and residential certificate guarantee, the government can create more jobs in the short term, but does not providelong-term remedy. Should College Education Be Vocation-Oriented?Due to the increased enrollment of college students in recent years, the total number of graduates coming out at the same time is such that many college graduates have difficulties in procuring jobs, especially when the economy is suffering slowdown. And then many scholars suggest that colleges should lay emphasis on vocational training by setting relative courses in the college curriculum so that graduates are more likely to be employed. Taking the employers’ requirement into consideration, that is, working experience, the suggestion seems reasonable. Though China’s economy keeps growing at a rate of about 9% in the rece nt and the number of jobs does increase, too many graduates coming out at a time will create great pressure for the job market. As an official stated, “the grand college enrollment plan is one of the main reasons for the current unemployment issue”. Theref ore, even if college students have enough experience and skills, will they succeed in procuring jobs when there are no positions available at all?Secondly, vocational orientation is to the detriment of the higher learning in the long term. Let us begin with the difference in goals between university and vocational training. As college students may decide to finish his studies after graduation or may continue at a higher level, university courses should thus provide both basic knowledge and a sound basis for further studies. On Following SuitAs people respond to incentives, they will change their behaviors if they perceive that costs or benefits change. However, whether one should follow suit or not is not simply a to-be-or-not-to-be question.A basic assumption of individual person is that everyone is rational. So one should carefully calculate costs and benefits in specific circumstances before they decide to follow suit or not.7. Should Chinese Language Course Be Adopted in College Curricula? The moment I saw the topic, a post originally submitted in Peking University BBS occurred to me. The post composed of a conversation between a Chinese young man, the author, and a waiter coming from Japan. The author suffered frustration when the waiter askedhim about Chinese culture. Surprisingly, the Japanese demonstrated that he got command of more Chinese culture than most Chinese young people. I do not know what your initial response is supposing that you were set in the circumstance. As a matter of fact, Chinese language course has drawn scant attention among college students, for many students lay their emphasis on English learning. College Students’ Image ReconsideredNowadays, college students comprised of the post-80 generation and the post-90 generation are always put in the storm of criticisms. Given more and more college graduates have difficulties in finding decent jobs, they are perceived by the oldergenerations as not competent as college students of the older generations. As a result, those older generations are likely to deem any behaviors different from their own experiences as unacceptable and due to their seniority they are able to express their judgments on various occasions. In the recent, it is reported that students commit suicides after school authorities make public announcem ent of disciplinary measures against those culprits’ violating certain school regulations. I do not believe that those students have no idea of what those regulationsare or any previous regulation enforcements. Some culprits may be not ready to accept the criticism after the public announcement is made. If this is the case, why do they not take a while to decide whether it is worthwhile to make these mistakes? Isn’t it irresponsible that they make mistakes and want to get away with due punishments? 10. The Reasons for Unharmonious Teacher-student RelationshipAs many former college students remember, when they were in college, students were fond of discussing problems with professors in their field in class. Professors were oftentimes invited to participate in students’ extra-curricular activities. According to those former college students, at that time students deemed professors as close friends that they could take into their confidence. However, both college students and professors are frustrated by the new type of teacher-student relationship. On various occasions, students absorb themselves in their own business such as reading novels, sending short messages, sleeping and etc., while professors are delivering their lectures. Despite the fact that many professors would like to avail every means to persuade students to actively participate in class discussion, students seem to be indifferent. Undoubtedly, there are different factors that account for this unharmonious relationship. As for me, credit system should take the blame.Firstly, with the adoption of credit system, students are likely to perceive that the goal of attending class is to earn credits. To quote a famous professor’s comments, “Are there any students who are willing to attend lectures in line with their own interests? I think to earn credits ranks top in their priorities to attend lectures.” Motivated by this mindset, students are likely to lose interest in the courses they choose. What matters is not what they will learn from professors; instead, they only show interest in how they can pass final examswith minimum efforts. Consequently, so long as they can perform successfully in final exams and earn required credits, whether they concentrate on class or not is not a big deal. Secondly, the adoption of credit system also results i n some changes in professors’ mindset. Given that students perceive attending lectures to earn credits, professors would realize that no matter how hard they try to persuade students to participate in class, they are only rewarded by students’ indifference. When these professors can not find fulfillment in the interaction with students in class, they are so frustrated that many of them will pay more attention to their research so as to be promoted to a higher rank. In consequence, professors will allocate less time to prepare for the coming lectures. Gradually, professors would find no passion, no fulfillment, and no incentive in class, which is to the detriment of teacher-student relationship in any sense. On all accounts, when college students and professors are bonded by several credits, the once sacred relationship is reduced to a trade relationship: students pay to earn credits and professors provide services by giving lectures. How can we expect an intimate relationship in this circumstance?11. Should the Four Books Be Set in the University Curricula?Under the influence of Western cultures, traditional classic books were expelled from school curricula in the New Culture Movement in the early 20th century. Since then, students in primary schools and high schools have been liberated from the claimed trash of feudalism. During the Cultural Revolution, traditional classic books were severely renounced again. As a result, students are taught to associate traditional classic books with backwardness of feudalism. With this background knowledge, we can easily understand why the adoption of the Four Books in some universities results in ongoing public controversy in an opener society in comparison with the past. Ironically, advocating the Four Books being taught in college or not, almost everyone is familiar with certain frequently cited sentences from traditional classic books. As for me, adopting the Four Books in university curricula is feasible.Firstly, it is unfair to associate the Four Books with the backwardness of feudal society and hence refuse to read them. Admittedly, those classic books were written in ancient times and inevitably could not transcend over temporal limitations. Some ideas conveyed in the Four Books even contradict contemporary thoughts. However, those classic books are records of ancient minds, without which we can not achieve today’s civilization. Some may argue that as ancient minds are outdated, it is useless to know that again. The truth is that ancient minds are also part of the ongoing process of our cultural development. If we are able to acquire a basic knowledge of traditional culture, we are likely to have a better chance to understand contemporary culture.Secondly, as college students should have the ability of critical thinking, they can figure out what is applicable and what is trash from the Four Books. Generally speaking, some educationalists worry college students will absorb outdated values and thoughts from。
