A Brief Introduction of Qi Baishi Memorial Hall

Located at the lakeside of White Horse Lake, Road DaHu of Xiangtan urban area, the Qi Baishi Memorial Hall is a tourist attraction in centre Hunan Province. The memorial covers an area of 10,000 square meters and its architecture is featured by classic elegance and unique archaic style. A large Culture and Art Centre is formed by the combination of the memorial hall, Cultural Hall, Baishi Park and Baishi square. It serves people as a place to commemorate the artist Qi Baishi, display art works, and support research, creation and training activities. It’s also a popular resort for sightseeing.

Under the approval of Central Propaganda Department, the memorial was completed and opened in 1993. It is one of the relic-protecting departments and an education base of patriotism of Xiangtan city. Qi Baishi’s earlier carving works (the only ones which preserved in our nation), handwritings and paintings completed during his different periods are collected in the hall; what also displayed in the hall are nearly a hundred pieces of art works accomplished by his descendants and students and another one thousand by the art masters from around the country. All the works have a very high level of art and appreciating value.

In 2002, there were more parts added to the Qi Baishi Memorial Hall according to a governmental plan. It included the following parts: the Introduction Hall, Displaying Hall of Qi Baishi’s Art Life, Displaying Hall of Qi Baishi’s Wooden Carvings, Displaying Hall of Qi Baishi’s Paintings, Displaying Hall of Qi Baishi’s Inscriptions, the Hall for trading in paintings and handwritings, the Displaying Hall of the works of Qi Baishi’s Descendants and Students and a hall for the masterpieces from around the country.

Baishi Park is a humanism themed park which is compatible with the Memorial Hall. There are serial sculptures of Qi Baishi, which are made of white stone. The image of Qi Baishi with white beard and gown is just like a god set by the white clouds. The park is arranged by three axes: the axis of art, scenic spot and the path of Qi Baishi’s art life. The master’s achievements in painting, inscription, calligraphy and poem are reflected by the following four parts of the park: the workroom for painting, the workroom for inscription, the Pavilion of Poem and the Terrace of Book. Sculptures and gardening are combined creatively to show the wonderful life sections of the art master. The park leaves us the unforgettable impression that the beautiful scenery has nurtured Baishi and the spirit of Baishi has livened the scenery.
