My son Paul got a job in a large chain of guitar stores. It was the first time for him to do such a job. The pay was based on a small salary and his sales. They offered him some training on how to introduce the product and make the sale. However, he wasn’t doing well. He was very puzzled.
One morning Paul said to me, “Mum, you used to be a sales trainer, can you tell me why I’m not doing well?” I said, “The key is that you must love the people you are selling a product to. Never count the money you will make in your mind. Do what is best for them even though they are just buying something small.”
He promised he would try to do so. After some time, his sales began to increase. He became the top salesman in the store and his salary was raised. After six months, he became one of the top ten salesmen in the whole chain of guitar stores around the country.
This company held a big party once a year to honor their top ten salespeople. Famous cars, great hotels and elegant dinners were the prizes. Paul was of course included. After the dinner, the boss of the company asked, “Paul, how did you make it?”
Paul answered, “I don’t want to tell you. You won’t believe me.”
“Of course I will believe you. Tell me.”

My 25-year old daughter moved house yesterday. She was moving from a house with a little garden so her son would have space to play. The distance was probably too short to call a removal company(搬家公司), but it was long enough to make carrying all the stuff a real pain.
But we didn't have to. A neighbor offered the use of her truck. She drove it up to my daughter's front door, and then went home while we loaded it up. Then she came out, drove it to the new house and walked back home for a cup of tea while we unloaded. Then she did it again and again.
We decided to thank her, but she didn’t want anything from us. My daughter got her some flowers later as a “thank you”.
Before I left, I stopped by the woman's house, just to thank her for being such a help to my
daughter, as she really didn’t have to help. It's not like they were such close friends or anything “It’s what neighbors should do,” she said.
“It’s what neighbors used to do,” I said.
“Well, let’s bring it back then,” she smiled. I thought she was right. Neighbors often helped each other in the past, but now we don’t do that so often as we did before.
“Let’s bring it back,” I said sincerely in my heart.
It’s good to have neighbors like her.

I was excited when I knew I was going to New Zealand because I had neve r been there before. I didn’t think about the problem of speaking English before I met my host family. A first I couldn’t communicate with them because my English was so bad. All the eight years I had been learning English wasn’t much use at all, because we didn’t have real practice at school. Even though my grammar was good, my pronunciation wasn’t. My problem is pronouncing "l " and "r". For example, New Zealand people often asked "What do you eat in Vietnam?" I want to tell them that I eat rice, but they didn’t understand when I said "We eat lice" My host mom helped me a lot by correcting my bad pronunciation. I usually practiced by talking to myself when I had a shower, so no one could hear me. After four months my English was much better. A part from English I learned to make my own breakfast and lunch. I had to ride a bicycle to school everyday. I went swimming and tried water- skiing and sailing. I was wonderful. But the most valuable thing was that I learned to be myself and to be independent.
