A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be f ound for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads. Manvs the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qual ities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten. It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不严格) and even the strictest are not strict enough. A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person's driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.46. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.B. Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.C. Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.D. The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.47. What does the author think of society toward motorists?A. Society laughs at the motorists.B. Society forgives their rude driving.C. Victims of accidents are nothing.D. Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.48. What does the author mean by saying “his car bec omes theextension of his personality” in Para. 2 ?A. Driving can represent his manners.B. Driving can show the other part of his personality.C. Driving can bring out his character.D. Driving can show his hidden qualities.49. Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?A. Test drivers every three years.B. Stricter driving tests.C. Build more highways.D. Raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.50. The author’s attitude towards the present traffic situation is ________.A. unsatisfiedB. positiveC. appealingD. unclear。

I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are out main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash (现⾦), had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Change it to me, ” was all he said. What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.56. The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits_________ .A.hoped to have the food first and pay laterB.promised to obey the store rulesC.forgot to take any money with himD.could not afford anything more expensive57. Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?A.kind and luckyB.friendly and helpfulC.poor and lonelyD.hurt and disappointed58. The writer acted upon the store rules because_________ .A.he felt no pity for the old gentlemanB.he considered the old man dishonestC.he expected someone else to pay for the old manD.he wanted to keep his present job59. What does the writer learn from his experience?A.Wealth is more important than anything elseB.Experience is better gained through practiceC.Obeying the rules means more than compassion.D.Helping others is easier said than doneBBlamelessI was a freshman in college when I met the Whites. They were completely different from my own family, yet I felt at home with them immediately. Jane White and I became friends at school, and her family welcomed me like a long-lost cousin. In my family, it was always important to place blame when anything bad happened.“Who did this? ”my mother would scream about a dirty kitchen.“This is all your fault, Katharine, ”my father would insist when the cat got out or the dishwasher broke. From the time we were little, my sister, brothers and I told on each other. We set a place for blame at the dinner table. But the Whites didn’t worry about who had done what. They picked up the pieces and moved on with their lives. The beauty of this was driven home to me the summer Jane died.In July, the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New York. The two older sisters, Sarah and Jane, were college students, and the youngest, Amy, had recently turned sixteen. Proud of having a new driver’s license(驾照),Amy was excited about practicing her driving on the trip. She showed off her license to everyone she met. The big sisters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip, but when they reached less crowded areas, they let Amy take over. Somewhere in South Carolina, we pulled off the highway to eat. After lunch, Amy got behind the wheel. She came to a crossroads with a stop sign. Whether she was nervous or just didn’t see the sign no one would ever know, but Amy continued into the crossroads without stopping. The driver of a large truck, unable to stop in time, ran into our car.Jane was killed immediately.I was slightly injured. The most difficult thing that I’ve ever done was to call the Whites to tell them about the accident and that Jane had died. Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend, I knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child. When Mr. and Mrs. White arrived at the hospital, they found their two daughters sharing a room. Sarah had a few cuts on the head; Amy’s leg was broken. They hugged(拥抱)us all and cried tears of sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters. They wiped away the girls’ tears and made a few jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches(拐杖).To both of their daughters, and especially to Amy, over and over they simply said, “We’re so glad that you’re alive. ”I was astonished. No blame. No accusations.Later, I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had run a stop sign.Mrs. White said, “Jane’s gone, and we miss her terribly. Nothing we say or do will ever bring her back. But Amy has her whole life ahead of her. How can she lead a full and happy life if she feels we blame her for her sister’s death? ”They were right. Amy graduated from the University of California and got married several years ago. She works as a teacher of learning-disabled students. She’s also a mother of two little girls of her own, the oldest named Jane.60. How did the accident occur?A. Amy didn’t know what to do when she saw the stop sign.B. Amy didn’t slow down so their car ran into a truck.C. Amy didn’t stop at a crossroads and a truck hit their car.D. Amy didn’t get off the highway at a crossroads.61. The Whites did not blame Amy for Jane’s death because _____.A. Amy was badly injured herself and they didn’t want to add to her painB. they didn’t want to blame their children in front of othersC. they didn’t want Amy to feel ashamed and sorry for the rest of her lifeD. Amy was their youngest daughter and they loved her best62. From the passage we can learn that _____.A. Amy has lived quite a normal lifeB. Amy has never recovered from the shockC. Amy changed her job after the accidentD. Amy lost her memory after the accidentCA rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃.Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate.Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world.Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources(资源):land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide(⼆氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests.People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this.Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two.Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world's wood supply.Rainforests are often called the world's drug store.More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1%of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.63.Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they ______.A.reflect more heat into the atmosphereB.reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earthC.bring about high rainfall throughout the worldD.rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃64.What does the word“this”underlined in the third paragraph refer to?A.Humans have begun destroying rainforests.B.People have a strong desire for resources.C.We will lose much more than we can gain.D.Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.65.It can be inferred from the text that ______.A.we can get enough resources without rainforestsB.we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained landC.the level of annual rainfall affects wind patternsD.there is great medicine potential in rainforests66.What might be the best title for the text?A.Rainforests and the EnvironmentB.How to Save RainforestsC.How to Protect NatureD.Rainforests and Medical DevelopmentDThe Diet Zone: A Dangerous PlaceDiet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically(⾝体上).Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤)instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). ASixteen years ago, Eileen boyle’s husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard from again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and, without so much as a note or a good-bye, close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them. Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home --- the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity. To those left behind this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self- confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well plannedrather than impulsive(冲动). “It’s typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people’s pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty.”28. When her husband left home, Eileen Doyle ______________.A. could not forgive him for taking the childrenB. had been expecting it to happen for some timeC. could not understand whyD. blamed herself for what had happened29. Most people who leave their families behind them ______________.A. do so without warningB. do so because of their debtsC. come back immediatelyD. change their names30. Some people would even prefer the death to the running away of their spouse because ______________.A. their spouse would feel no pain during the deathB. their spouse death would not be a bit terribleC. a desertion would not bring a feeling of rejection or failureD. their spouse’s death would make them feel less painful31. Usually the man or woman left behind with an unfinished marriage ______________.A. admits responsibility for the situationB. wishes the person who has left were deadC. will come back within a yearD. will have no legal marriage life for seven yearsB21. One’s performance in the class will be very important.22. What can we infer from the passage?A. People don’t need to learn all the contents of the course.B. Few people will be interested in the course.C. The course is a short-term training program.D. Students can choose their lessons as they like.23. Who are the intended readers of the passage?A. Children and parents.B. T eenagers and adults.C. T eenagers only.D. Adults only.CFeeling blue about the world?“Cheer up.” says science writer Matt Ridley. “The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.”Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence; optimistic, because that evidence shows human progress to be both unavoidable and good. And this is what he's set out to prove from a unique point of view in his most recent book, The Rational Optimist. He views mankind as a grand enterprise that, on the whole, has done little but progress for 100,000 years. He backs his findings with hard facts gatheredthrough years of research. Here's how he explains his views.1 ) Shopping fuels inventionIt is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone. Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, better cars, and, of course, more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us. This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we'll be.2) Brilliant advancesOne reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longerlived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown a lot cheaper. T ake one example. In 1800, a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work. In the 1880s, the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes' work to pay for. In 1950 it was eight seconds. Today it's half second.3) Let's not kill ourselves for climate changeMitigating (减轻)climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself. A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossilfuel (化石燃料)electricity is forbidden by wellmeaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nosebleed by putting a tourniquet (止血带)around our necks.68. What is the theme of Ridley's most recent book?A. Weakness of human nature.B. Concern about climate change.C. Importance of practical thinking.D. Optimism about human progress.69. How does Ridley look at shopping?A. It encourages the creation of things.B. It results in shortage of goods.C. It demands more fossil fuels.D. It causes a poverty problem.70. The candle and lamp example is used to show that ________.A. oil lamps give off more light than candlesB. shortening working time brings about a happier lifeC. advanced technology helps to produce better candlesD. increased production rate leads to lower cost of goods71. What does the last sentence of the passage imply?A. Cutting carbon is necessary in spite of the huge cost.B. Overreaction to climate change may be dangerous.C. People's health is closely related to climate change.D. Careless medical treatment may cause great pain.DLondon’s newest skyscraper(摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres,it is the tallest building in Europe. TheShard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London,Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire(尖顶).He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It lo oks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name:the Shard.Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts(桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a fivestar hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began,a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.32.London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of .A.its cost B.its sizeC.its shape D.its height33.When he designed the Shard,Piano wanted it to .A.change London’s skylineB.inherit London’s traditionC.imitate the Egyptian styleD.attract potential visitors34.The critics who refer to social division think the Shard .A.is only preferred by the richB.is intended for wealthy peopleC.is far away from the poor areaD.is popular only with Londoners35.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.The Shard:Cheers and ClapsB.The Shard:Work of a Great ArchitectC.The Shard:New Symbol of London?D.The Shard:A Change for the Better?第二节(七选五共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I’ve noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours;the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers. This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I’ve often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, “I’ll stop on my way home and dig them.”“Gee, I don’t want to get my good clothes dirty.” Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding tool one year for my trunk to be used for that expressed purpose. One day on my way home from work, I was upset to see that the highway department had removed the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them blooming this spring.”A week ago we were shocked and sad to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a serious brain disease. She is 20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because of age and distance, we haven’t been as close as we all would have liked. I couldn’t help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband’s sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I’ll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.24.Why does the writer want to start a wildflower garden in her yard?A.Because the flowers bloom only in the morning hours.B.Because she can see the flowers every day for two weeks.C.Because the flowers can remind her of her oldest sister-in-law.D.Because she enjoys the way of life in company with the flowers.25.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A.The blue flowers in the ditches always draw my attention.B.We don’t get on well with the sister-in-law in practice.C.I never stopped to dig the flowers for some reason.D.The sister-in-law lives far from us.26.According to the passage, the writer will______________.A.stop to find the flowers whenever she drives along the highwayB.plant a variety of flowers in the garden in her yard in futureC.get as wonderful memories with the sister-in-law as beforeD.get closer to the sister-in-law in the following days27.What is the theme of the story?A. Actions speak louder than words.B. No sweets without sweat.C. Time and tide wait for no man.D. Opportunity belongs to whoever is prepared.( C )The clock always seems to be ticking rather too fast in the doctor’s office and the queue of patients outside the door seems to be pressing rather too hard. Some say it’s high time for the model of short, sharp one-to-one appointments to give way to shared medical appointments (SMAs).SMAs are doctor-patient visits in which a group of patients receive patient education and counseling(咨询), physical examination and medical support in a group setting. Typically SMAs are designed to have one or more doctors attend to a group of patients who share a common illness or medical condition. In contrast to one-to-one visits, SMASprovide a longer appointment time-frame as well as the opportunity for patients to have improved access to their physicians and meanwhile pick up additional information and support from peers. However, doctors who have pioneered the shared appointment approach report that there are significant challenges involved. Dr. Sumego, director of shared medical appointments, Cleveland Clinic, identifies culture change as the most significant challenge. Physicians and nurses are trained in a model of personal service and privacy; the SMA approach is a fundamental challenge to those fixed ideas. They need shared goals and a way of testing the innovation against agreed standards. Dr. Sumego says, “ The physicians may be worried about the possible chaos and efficien cies that are marketed. They also have to make the patients understand what their appointment is, and what the expectation is. ”“So, if an organization was looking to start shared medical appointments, I would advise them to start the buy-in from a few champion physicians, develop the work-flow and develop some experience. Provide some support behind what that best practice should look like. Create some standards so that, as the concept spreads, you can employ that experience to start the next shared medic al appointments and the next. ”28. What is the purpose of the SMA approach?A. To improve medical service.B. To promote doctors’ reputation.C. To conduct medical research.D. To meet patients’ expectation.29. According to Dr. Sumego, what prevents the SMA approach from being widely adopted?A. Personal service.B. Fixed ideas.C. Lack of equipment.D. Shared goals.30. What can the underlined “buy-in” in Paragraph 4 be replaced by?A. Support.B. Organization.C. Purchase.D. Practice.31. What can be learned about the SMA approach in the last paragraph?A. It is currently being questioned.B. It is impractical in some areas.C. It will enjoy wide popularity soon.D. It should be carried out step by step.( D )I.M. Pei, whose modern designs and projects made him one of the best-known and most productive architects of the 20th century, has died. He was 102. A spokesman for Pei’s New York architecture firm confirmed his death to the Asso ciated Press. Pei, whose designs included a controversial renovation of Paris’ Louvre Museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, died overnight, his son Chien Chung Pei told the New York Times.Ieoh Ming Pei, the son of an outstanding banker in China, left his homeland in 1935, moving to the US and studying architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. After teaching and working for the US government, he went to work for a New York developer in 1948 and started his own firm in 1955.The museums, municipal buildings, hotels, schools and other structures that Pei built around the world showed precision geometry(几何结构) and an abstract quality with much respect for light. They were composed of stone, steel and glass and, as with the Louvre, Pei often worked glass pyramids into his projects. The Louvre, parts of which date to the 12th century, proved to be Pei ’s most controversial work, starting with the fact that he was not French. After being chosen for the job by the then president, François Mitterrand, surrounded by much secrecy, Pei began by making a four-month study of the museum and French history. He created a futuristic(极其现代的)70ft-tall steel-framed, glass-walled pyramid as a grand entrance for the museum with three smaller pyramids nearby. It was a striking contrast to the existing Louvre structures in classic French style and was violently criticized by many French.Pei said the Louvre was undoubtedly the most difficult job of his career. He said he had wanted to create a modern space that did not detract(减损)from the traditional part of the museum. “Contemporary architects tend to put modernity into something,” he said in a New York Times interview in 2008. “There is a certain concern for history but it’s not very deep. I understand that time has changed, and we have evolved. But I don’t want to forget the beginning. A lasting architecture has to have roots.”When Pei won the international Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, he used the $100,000 award to start a program for ambitious Chinese architects to study in the US. Even though he formally retired from his firm in 1990, Pei was still taking on projects in his late 80s, such as museums in Luxembourg, Qatar and his ancestral home of Suzhou.32.What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?A.Pei is famous for traditional designs in architecture.B.Pei built the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.C.Pei set up his own firm with the help of a New York developer.D.Pei put the elements light and glass pyramids into the Louvre.33.What is the French attitude towards Pei’s job of the Louvre?A. Positive.B. Neutral.C. Critical.D. Objective.34.What is the purpose of Paragraph 5?A.To explain Pei’s idea about the Louvre innovation job.B.To list the modernity of the Louvre innovation.C.To show Pei’s love for traditional culture.D.To present Pei’s contributions to architecture in history.35.Which of the following words can best describe Pei?A. Productive and stubborn.B. Generous and persistent.C. Hard-working and humorous.D. Tolerant and considerate.第二节根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In particular, the corporate workplace will never be completely family-friendly until women are part of senior management decisions, and Europe’s top corporate-governance positions remain overwhelmingly male. Indeed, women hold only 14 percent of positions on Europe corporate boards. The Europe Union is now considering legislation(立法) to force corporate boards to maintain a certain proportion of women—up to 60 percent. This proposed mandate(强制执行) was born of frustration. Last year, Europe Commission Vice President Viviane Reding issued a call to voluntary action. Reding invited corporations to sign up for gender balance goal of 40 percent female board membership. But her appeal was considered a failure: only 24 companies took it up.Do we need quotas(定量) to ensure that women can continue to climb the corporate Ladder fairly as they balance work and family?“Personally, I don’t like quotas,” Reding said recently. “But I like what the quotas do.” Quotas get action: they “open the way to equality and they break through the glass ceiling(女性在工作中遇到的一种无形障碍),”according to Reding, a result seen in France and other countries with legally binding provisions(捆绑条款) on placing women in top business positions.I understand Reding’s reluctance—and her frustration. I don’t like quotas either; they conflict with my be lief in meritocracy(精英管理), government by the capable. But, when one considers the obstacles to achieving the meritocratic ideal, it does look as if a fairer world must be temporarily ordered. After all, four decades of evidence has now shown that corporations in Europe as the US are evading(逃避)the meritocratic hiring and promotion of women to top position—no matter how much “soft pressure” is put upon them. When women do break through to the summit of corporate power—as, for example, Sheryl Sandberg recently did at Facebook—they attract massive attention precisely because they remain the exception to the rule.If appropriate pubic policies were in place to help all women—whether CEOs or their children’s caregivers—and all families, Sandberg would be no more newsworthy than any other highly capable person living in a more just society.31. In the European corporate workplace, generally __________.A. women take the leadB. men have the final sayC. corporate governance is overwhelmedD. senior management is family-friendly32. According to Reding, quotas may help women __________.A. get top business positionsB. see through the glass ceilingC. balance work and familyD.expect legal results33. The author’s attitude toward Reding’s appeal is __________.A. skepticalB. objectiveC. indifferentD. approving34. Women entering top management become headlines due to the lack of ________.A. more social justiceB. massive media attentionC. suitable public policiesD. greater “soft pressure”BPsychiatrists (精神病专家) who work with older parents say that maturity can be an advantage in raisingchildren—older parents are more thoughtful, use less physical discipline and spend more time with their children. But raising kids takes money and energy. Many older parents find themselves balancing their limited financialresources, declining energy and failing health against the growing demands of an active child. Dying and leaving young children is probably the older parents’ biggest, and oft en unspoken, fear. Having late-life children, says an economics professor, often means parents, particularly fathers, “end up retiring much later.” For many, retirementbecomes an unobtainable dream.Henry Metcalf, a 54-year-old journalist, knows it takes money to raise kids. But he’s also worried that his energy will give out first. Sure, he can still ride bikes with his athletic fifth grader, but he’s learned that young at heart doesn’t mean young. Lately he’s been taking afternoon naps to keep up his energy. “My body is aging,” says Metcalf. “You can’t get away from that.”Often, older parents hear the ticking of another kind of biological clock. Therapists who work withmiddle-aged and older parents say fears about aging are nothing to laugh at. “They worry they’ll be mistaken for grandparents, or that they’ll need help getting up out of those little chairs in nursery school,” says Joann Galst, a New York psychologist. But at the core of those little fears there is often a much bigger one: “that they won’t be alive long enough to support and protect their child,” she says. Many late-life parents, though, say their children came at just the right time. After marrying late andundergoing years of fertility (受孕) treatment, Marilyn Nolen and her husband, Randy, had twins. “We both wanted children,” says Marilyn, who was 55 when she gave birth. The twins have given the couple what they desired for years, “a sense of family.” Kids of older dads are often smarter, happier and more sociable because their fathers ar e more involved in their lives. “The dads are older, more mature,” says Dr. Silber, “and more ready to focus on parenting.”35. What does the author mean by saying “For many, retirement becomes an unobtainable dream” (Lines 7-8,Para. 1)?A. They are reluctant to retire when they reach their retirement age.B. They can’t obtain the retirement benefits they have dreamed of.C. They can’t get full pension unless they work some extra years.D. They have to go on working beyond their retirement age.36. The author gives the example of Henry Metcalf to show that ________.A. older parents should exercise more to keep up with their athletic childrenB. many people are young in spirit despite their advanced ageC. older parents tend to be concerned about their aging bodiesD. taking afternoon naps is a good way to maintain energy37. What do we learn about Marilyn and Randy Nolen?A. They thought they were an example of successful fertility treatment.B. Not until they reached middle age did they think of having children.C. Not until they had the twins did they feel they had formed a family.D. They believed that children born of older parents would be smarter.四、任务型阅读Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead ofpiling it up, relax instead of stressing, and slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in youreveryday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.Separate Y our actionsWhen you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying “No”The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations thatformerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner. If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it's notbecause the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact is that overloadedpeople often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in yourprivate life or your working life.Allow Yourself to Be Weak"I can handle stress" is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stressare given more and more to cope with — until one day they break.Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These signals can come from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases. If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, "I can't manage that.”Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier.” This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, corners, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous: driving a car; crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.Escape Now and ThenSuccessful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired ( some people fall asleep after a few miles).。

But they weren't there to throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars. Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: "Thanks for not using real apes(猿)!"The creative team behind "Apes" used motion—capture(动作捕捉) technology to createdigitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(图象). In this case, one of a realistic-looking ape.Yet "Apes" is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabs on more than 2, 000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including "Water for Elephants, "The Hangover Part Ⅱ" and "Zookeeper," have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven't been treated properly. In some cases, it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.4.Why did the animal activists gather on Hollywood Boulevard?A. They share a front door and a washing machine, but Rita Whitehead has her own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room on the ground floor."We floated the idea to my mum of sharing a house, "says Kathryn Whitehead. Rita cuts in: "We spoke more with Nick because I think it's a big thing for Nick to live with hismother-in-law. "And what does Nick think? "From my standpoint, it all seems to work very well. Would I recommend it? Yes, I think I would. "It's hard to tell exactly how many people agree with him, but research indicates that the numbers have been rising for some time. Official reports suggest that the number of households with three generations living together had risen from 325, 000 in 2001 to 419, 000 in 2013.Other varieties of multigenerational family are more common. Some people live with their elderly parents; many more adult children are returning to the family home, if they ever left. It is said that about 20% of 25—34-year-olds live with their parents, compared with 16% in 1991. The total number of all multigenerational households in Britain is thought to be about 1.8 million.Stories like that are more common in parts of the world, where multigenerational living is more firmly rooted. In India, particularly outside cities, young women are expected to move in with their husband's family when they get married.8.Who mainly uses the ground floor in the Victorian house in Bristol?A. Nick.B. Rita.C. Kathryn.D. The daughters.9.What is Nick's attitude towards sharing the house with his mother-in-law?A. Positive.B. Carefree.C. Tolerant.D. Public opinions.11.What is the text mainly about?A. Lifestyles in different countries.B. Conflicts between generations.C. A housing problem in Britain.D. A rising trend of living in the UK.DWe are the products of evolution, and not just evolution that occurred billions of years ago. As scientists look deeper into our genes(基因), they are finding examples of human evolution in just the past few thousand years. People in Ethiopian highlands have adapted to living at high altitudes. Cattle-raising people in East Africa and northern Europe have gained a mutation(突变) that helps them digest milk as adults. On Thursday in an article published in Cell, a team of researchers reported a new kind of adaptation—not to air or to food, but to the ocean. A group of sea-dwelling people in Southeast Asia have evolved into better divers. The Bajau, as these people are known, number in thehundreds of thousands in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. They have traditionally lived on houseboats; in recent times, they've also built houses on stilts(支柱) in coastal waters. "They are simply a stranger to the land," said Rodney C. Jubilado, a University of Hawaii researcher who studies the Bajau.Dr. Jubilado first met the Bajau while growing up on Samal Island in the Philippines. They made a living as divers, spearfishing or harvesting shellfish. "We were so amazed that they could stay underwater much longer than us local islanders, "Dr. Jubilado said. "I could see them actually walking under the sea. "In 2015, Melissa Ilardo, then a graduate student in genetics at the University of Copenhagen, heard about the Bajau. She wondered if centuries of diving could have led to the evolution of physical characteristics that made the task easier for them. "It seemed like the perfect chance for natural selection to act on a population," said Dr. Ilardo. She also said there were likely a number of other genes that help the Bajau dive.12.What does the author want to tell us by the examples in paragraph 1?A. Environmental adaptation of cattle raisers.B. New knowledge of human evolution.C. Recent findings of human origin.D. Significance of food selection.13.Where do the Bajau build their houses?A. In valleys.B. Near rivers.C. On the beach.D. Off the coast.14.Why was the young Jubilado astonished at the Bajau?A. They could walk on stilts all day.B. They had a superb way of fishing.C. They could stay long underwater.D. They lived on both land and water.15.What can be a suitable title for the textA. Bodies Remodeled for a Life at SeaB. Highlanders' Survival SkillsC. In humans the purpose of all the desire is to focus attention on the raising of offspring. Children demand an unusual amount of parenting, and two parents are better than one. Love is a signal that both partners are committed, and makes it more likely that this commitment will continue as long as necessary for children to reach independence. But what does science have to say about the notion of love at first sight? In recent years the ability to watch the brain in action has offered a wealth of insight into the mechanics of love. Researchers have shown that when a person falls in love, a dozen different part of brain work together to release chemicals that trigger feelings of euphoria, bonding and excitement. It has also been shown that the unconditional love between a mother and a child is associated with activity in different regions of the brain from those associated with pair-bonding love.Passionate love is rooted in the reward circuitry of the brain—the same area that is active when humans feel a rush from cocaine. In fact, the desire, motivations and withdrawals involved in love have a great deal in common with addiction. Its most intense forms tend to be associated with the early stages of a relationship, which then give way to a calmer attachment form of love one feels with a long term partner. What all this means is that one special person can become chemically rewarding to the brain of another. Love at first sight, then, is only possible if the mechanism for generating long-term attachment can be triggered quickly. There are signs that it can be. One line of evidence is that people are able to decide within a second how attractive they find another person. This decision appears to be related to facial attractiveness, although men may favor women with waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7, no matter what their overall weight is. (This ratio may indicate a woman’s reproductive health.)Another piece of evidence comes from work by a psychologist at Ben-Gurion University, who found in a survey that a small percentage (11%) of people in long-term relationships said that they began with love at first sight. In other words, in some couples the initial favorable impressions of attractiveness triggered love which sustained a lengthy bond. It is also clear that some couples need to form their bonds over a longer period, and popular culture tells many tales of friends who become lovers. One might also assume that if a person is looking for a partner with traits that cannot be quantified instantly, such as compassion, intellect or a good sense of humor, then it would be hard to form a relationship on the basis of love at first sight. Those more concerned with visual appearances, though, might find this easier. So it appears that love at first sight exists, but is not a very common basis for long-term relationships.31. When a person falls in love, _____________.A. he feels as if he were addicted to cocaine.B. he will be committed to the beloved as long as necessary.C. he will experience complex feelings brought on by different regions of his brain.D. he will experience a calmer attachment form of love before he feels the extreme love.32. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. pair-bonding love comes from a long stable friendship.B. the mechanism for creating long-term attachment ensures love at first sightC. it is impossible for those ordinary-looking people to fall in love at first sight.D. men may be attracted by a girl whose figure suggests her admirable reproductive capacity.33. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage?A. The stages of passionate loveB. The science of love at first sightC. The biological construct of pair-bondingD.The mechanism for generating long-term lov eBIn creating A.J. Fikry’s ordinary-yet-extraordinary life, the author Gabielle Zevin has thrown every clichés(老生常谈) into the mix. The hero, A.J. Fikry, lost his beloved wife Nic in a road accident. The sales of his bookstore have been decreasing. The enthusiastic new sales representative Amelia won’t stop annoying him with new books. His rare and very valuable first edition has gone missing. But the unexpected arrival of Maya left in his care brings about a series of events with love and hope to his life. There are few real surprises in the plot and attentive readers will be able to tell where the story is headed. But that is not the point; the clichés and the predictable plot take nothing away from Zevin’s work The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry because it’s how she tells the story that first charms the readers, then holds their attention, making them read the whole book in a single sitting and finally give the book a long hug when they are finished. This book is a love letter to the joys of reading. Each chapter begins with the title of a short story or a book and a note from A.J. Fikry describing what he likes about it, essentially introducing each character by what they read. The characters are so realistic that it’s hard not to fall in love with all of them: Maya, “the fantastic book-worm,” Amelia, “the giantess” with questionable taste in fashion, Lambiase, the adorable police chief, and A.J. Fikry, the reluctant hero who hates electronic reading devices that will “send centuries of a lively culture into what will surely be a rapid decline.”The passage of time, race issues, and the bureaucratic argument of children’s services are all put aside in the telling of this story, not because there’s anything to hide or because reality is not allowed to interfere, but because the author chooses to focus on the important stuff. For example, it focuses on Lambiase who organizes a reading club for policemen at the book store. His original intention is to help promote business, but over the years he becomes a genuine book-lover, one who tends to always have simple advice for his cynical(愤世嫉俗的) friend, A.J. Fikry. “Bad timing,” Lambiase claims, “I’ve been a police officer for twenty years now and I’ll tell you pretty much every bad thing in life is a result of bad timing, and every good thing is the result of good timing.”More than anything else, this novel is not only about the selling of them or the reading of them, but how books and stories become part of our lives, how we find ourselves within what we read and how we carry books with us. It is also about the power of unexpected happiness and always believing that something wonderful is just around the corner. The Late Bloomer is the book within a book which brings together A.J. Fikry and Amel ia. It reminds them that life doesn’t follow a set script, things happen when they are meant to happen, and there is no such thing as “too late” for anything. Life is the big picture. Always look at the big picture. Enjoy it. Don’t get too concentrated on the details, because it will all be over before you know it. In the long run nobody, not even you, will remember the ordinary details because they are, in the end, quite irrelevant.A.J. Fikry’s final words of wisdom to teen-aged Maya convey the same feelings in literary terms: “We are not quite novels. We are not quite short stories. In the end, we are collected works. We have read enough to know there are no collections where each story is perfect. Some of us hit. Some miss.”35. The police chief organizing a reading club is mentioned to prove _________ in the novel.A. there is really nothing to hideB. reality is not allowed to interfereC. important stuff has been focused onD. everything is a result of timing36. What can be implied in Paragraph 5?A. The novel underlines happiness will always be around.B. The novel mainly talks about the marketing of the book.C. It is The Late Bloomer that brings A.J and Amelia together.D. It is important to do things on the basis of overall situation.37. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph most probably means _________.A. our life is full of ups and downsB. we should collect works all our lifeC. our life is closely connected with booksD. we should read books all our life38. The passage is mainly about _________.A. the extraordinary life of A.J. FikryB. the moral lesson of no “too late” in lifeC. a comment on The Later BloomerD. a review of The Storied Life of A.J. He pushes a few buttons on his cellphone and within seconds he has paid for the fuel. With the same quick pushes on his phone, he pays for virtually everything he needs: groceries at the supermarket, a few oranges from a market stall, or a cup of sweet milky tea from a café. “Everyone here has his own b ank with easy access,” boasts Mr. Dahir. “Even lying in bed, you can be paying your bills.”Electronic payments offer consumers convenience, provide revenue to banks, credit card companies and payment processors, and offer merchants improved cash flow and convenience. “I don’t even carry money any more,” says Adan Abokor, a democracy activist, “I haven’t seen cashfor a long time. Almost every merchant, even hawker (小贩) on the street, accepts payment by cellphone. There’s no waiting for it and no counting of cash.”The system is impressively simple and secure. Purchases are made by dialing a three-digit number, entering a four-digit PIN, and then ent ering the retailer’s payment number and the amount of money. Both customer and merchant receive text messages to confirm the payment.Clearing up cash payments has several advantages as well. The printing and handling of money is expensive. Cash payments can be anonymous and hard to track criminal activities to be conducted in secret. Many government favor reducing cash dealings in order to better monitor and understand the activities of their citizens. The Swedish government has been discussing the removing of cash since 2010.However, some people doubt what members of a cashless society do when the power goes off. Do they choose to barter (物物交换) and rob? Do they sit at home and wait? What happens to people who rely on their cell phones to process money dealings when cell service and the Internet are interrupted? A world affected by terrorism and increasingly violent weather may not yet be ready to abandon currency. “Ironically, the day after the largest bank in Norway, DNB, proposed ending all cash dealings, I went to my local grocery store and when I tried to pay by phone, I was told that I needed to go to the ATM to get cash because the system was broken.” said an interviewee.Other people fear that electronic payments may create security and fraud risks and enable dealings to be tracked and reported.Privacy, security and convenience are all important factors in the adoption of electronic payment technology. New technologies which balance and address these factors may enable to remove cash.。
