Fish-eaters could stay in one place for several years. However, once man lear ned to farm, he could live Ion ger in one place. Thus, he was able to build a permanent home. Once again, he built his home with the materials he found at hand. In Egypt, for example, wood was scarce, so most houses were built of bricks made of dried mud, with a roof supported by tree trun ks.When the Norseme n came from Scandin avia to n orther n Europe, they found many forests, so they built homes with a framework of heavy tree trunks and then filled the space between the trunks with clay. The Eskimos, on the other han d, lived in a land where there was little or no wood. They learned to adapt their homes perfectly to theirsurroundings. In the wintertime, when everything was covered with snow and ice, the Eskimos built their homes with blocks of ice. When the warm weather came and melted the ice, the Eskimos lived in a tent made of animal ski ns.The weather is man ' s worst natural enemy. He has to protect himself from extremes of heat and cold and from storms, wind and rain. Where there are torre ntial rains, houses are either built on piles to keep them off the ground, or they have steep thatched roofs to drain off the rain. People living in the Congo River region have found that steep, heavily-thatched roofs drain off the jungle rains more quickly.Protect ion from dan ger has also in flue need the type of house man builds. When en emies threate ned him, man made his house as in accessible as possible. The tree-dwellers of the Philipp ines protect themselves by livi ng high above the ground. Whe n dan ger threate ns, they remove the ladders leading to their homes. The cliff dwellers of the American Southwest built their homes high up on the sides of cliffs, where access was very difficult.Nomad tribes must move from place to place, tak ing care of flocks of sheep that are always in n eed of fresh grass. Their houses must be simple and easy to tran sport. The no mads of cen tral Asia have developed a house made of a framework of poles covered with felt. The house is round because the framework is curved, and there is a hole at the top to let the smoke out.1. Accord ing to the passage, the Norseme n who came to n orther n Europe built their houseswith _________ .(A) rocks and wood(B) wood and clay(C) woode n roofs and stone walls(D) woode n walls and thatched roofs2. The passage suggests that a house with a steep sloping roof is more likely to befound _________ .(A) in a wi ndy country(B) in a rainy country(C) n ear the coast(D) in the desert4. Whe n dan ger threate ns, the tree-dwellers of the Philipp ines ______ .(A) take away their ladders(B) bombard the en emy from above(C) pull up the bridge over their moat(D) wind up the ropes leadi ng to their homes5. Accord ing to the passage, the no mad tribes of cen tral Asia live in _______ .(A) ten ts(B) tree houses(C) small houses of clay(D) round houses of felt【参考答案】1.B 2.D 3.B 4.A 5.DQuestions 6—10Emma Way did not become a figure of con tempt for British cyclists because she nu dged Toby Hockley off his bicycle and into a hedge as she drove past him on a country lane on May 19. No, she achieved that in famy by con fess ing to her crime on li ne. cked “(DEf i sttef knohis bike earlier, ” Way, 22, tweeted after the collisi on that left Hockley, 29, with a bruised bodyand the status of a martyr for Britain ' s cyclists. " Ihavteeiglnt of wayen pay ro—tax! ” She ended with a hashtag popuwrth tweeting British motorists: #bloodycyclists. It was the tweet heard around the roads of Britain and it resulted in Way ' s being convicted in November of drivi ng offen ses, los ing her job as a trainee acco untant and ack no wledg ing in court that the comme nt rated "11 out of 10 ” on the stupidity scale. In an in terview on n ati onal televisi on after her conviction, she no ted that since the story broke, she had bee n cyberbullied and had received "malicious com muni cati ons. ” What she did not say was thaorhefwialsnock ingHockley, a chef, off his bike. " I was quite angry at the mannerism of the cyclist on the roadsaid. " My point of view is that he was on my side of the road that ' s not the wa—you drive. ”Way to stoke the fire, Ms. Way. By continuing to pin the blame for the incident on the cyclist, the young driver fell further into an already con siderable chasm that divides moder n Brita in. The BBC last year featured an hourl ong docume ntary —with lots of footage of ragi ng cyclists and cab drivers ——whose title explained the situation succinctly: War on Britain ' s Roads. It wasn' tentirely an exaggeration: people are dying in this conflict between cyclists and drivers. London in November seemed like a particularly dangerous place for the two-wheeled combatants. Six cyclists were killed in less than two weeks, a mounting toll chronicled in increasingly mournful headlines. Six in a few days is a lot; the total killed this year in Britain capital is 14. The deaths sparked a bout of public recrim in atio n. When London ' Mayor Boris Johnson, himself a cyclist, appeared less than sympathetic after the fifth death — he told a radio host that some of the dead cyclists " have take n decisi ons that really did put their lives in dan ger —he was tran sformed from cycli ng champi on to heartless pro-car politicia n and joined Way as a target of the particularly passi on ate fury that cyclists can muster.s bicyclistsThe an ger has become political in Brita in, as it has in many coun tries whose gover nmentsencourage citizens to cycle rather than drive to work, to lessen the impact on the environment and on traffic. Johnson has arguably done more than any previous politician for London cyclists, establishing a $1.6 billion fund to makecycling safer in the city and appointing London ' first cycli ng commissi oner. Even though the nu mber of cyclist deaths in London has bee n dropp ing steadily in the past two decades, the dema nd from cyclists for the city to adapt grows as the nu mber of bikes on the road grows. As does the particularly passi on ate fury that cyclists can muster.Whether or not Johnson is right that some of the cyclists who died recently were breaking the law, all of us makea very personal decision about risking our lives by getting on our bikes. And we should know that when we ignore red lights to get ahead of the traffic, or get too close to trucks or buses because we feel it 'our right to be there, then we are making a mistake even dumber than Emma Way 'tweet. In the war of the cyclist vs. the driver, the driver will nearly always come out alive. Less so the cyclist.6. According to the passage, who had been cyberbullied and had received malicious com muni cati ons?(A) Toby Hockley.(B) Boris Joh nson.(C) Emma Way.(D) A cycli ng commissi oner.7. Which of the following statements is NOT true in the conflict between cyclists and drivers?(A) London seemed like a particularly dan gerous place for the cyclists.(B) 14 cyclists were killed in less than two weeks in London.(C) The deaths of cyclists sparked a bout of public recrim in ati on.(D) People are dying in this conflict between cyclists and drivers.8. London ' s Mayor has established a $1.6 billion fund ________ .(A) to en courage citize ns to cycle to work(B) to build more bike lanes in London(C) to lessen the impact on the environment(D) to make cycli ng safer in London9. Accord ing to the passage, a rash of accide nts in volvi ng cars has made London (A) outraged(B) alarmed(C) cautious(D) cyberbullied10. What would be the best title for this passage?(A) Cycle rather than Drive to Work(B) Watch your Cycli ng Manners(C) Pedal at Your Own Peril(D) Lesse n the Impact on Traffic【参考答案】6.C 7.B 8.D 9.A 10.CQuestions 11—15Educators have known for 30 years that students perform better when given one-on-one tutoring and mastery learning — working on a subject until it is mastered, not just until a test is scheduled. Success also requires motivatio n, whether from an inner drive or from pare nts, men tors or peers. Will the rise of massive ope n on li ne courses (MOOCs) quash these success factors? Not at all. In fact, digital tools offer our best path to cost-effective, pers on alized lear nin g. I know because I have taught both ways. For years Sebastian Thrun and I have given artificial-intelligence courses at Sta nford Uni versity and other schools; we lectured, assig ned homework and gave every one the same exam at the same time. Each semester just 5 to 10 perce nt of stude nts regularly en gaged in deep discussi ons in class or office hours; the rest were more passive. We felt there had to be a better way.So, in the fall of 2011, we tried something new. In addition to our traditional classroom, we created a free online course open to anyone. On our first try, we attracted a city 'worth of participa nts —about 100,000 en gaged with the course, and 23,000 fini shed.In spired by Nobel laureate Herbert Simon' scomme nt that “ learnin gresults from what the student does and thinks and only from what the student does and thinks, we created a course centered on the students doing things and getting frequent feedback. Our a lectures were short (two- to six-minute) videos designed to prime the attendees for doing the next exercise. Some problems required the applicati on of mathematical tech niq ues described in the videos. Others were ope n-en ded questio ns that gave stude nts a cha nce to thi nk on their own and the n to hash out ideas in on li ne discussi on forums. Our scheme to help make learning happen actively, rather than passively, created many ben efits akin to tutori ng — and helped to in crease motivatio n. First, as show n in a 2013 study in the Proceedi ngs of the Nati onal Academy of Scie nces USA, freque nt in teract ions keep atte ntio n from wandering. Second, as William B. Wood and Kimberly D. Tanner describe in a 2012 Life Scien ces Educati on paper, lear ning is enhan ced whe n stude nts work to con struct their own explanations, rather than passively listening to the teacher ' That is why a properly designed automated in tellige nt tutori ng system can foster lear ning outcomes as well as huma n in structors can, as Kurt van Leh n found in a 2011 meta-a nalysis in Educati onal Psychologist.A final key advantage was the rapid improvement of the course itself. We analyzed the jun ctures where our thousa nds of stude nts succeeded or failed and found where our course n eeded fine-tuning. Better still, we could capture this information on an hour-by-hour basis. For our class, huma n teachers an alyzed the data, but an artificial-in tellige nce system could perform this fun ctio n and the n make recomme ndatio ns for what a pupil could try next to improve —as on li ne shopp ing 精品文档sites today make automated recomme ndati ons for what book or movie you might enjoy. On li ne learning is a tool, just as the textbook is a tool. The way the teacher and the stude nt use the tool is what really coun ts.11. What does the passage mainly discuss?(A) Different sources of motivation for students ' success.(B) Effective one-on-one tutori ng and mastery lear ning.(C) Person alized massive ope n on li ne courses for stude nts.(D) Con siderable improveme nt of the college courses.12. The word “quash” ( para. 2) is closest in meaning to _____ .(A) inten sify(B) in spire(C) cancel(D) disco unt13. When the author and his colleague offered their first on li ne course ____ .(A) it attracted about 100,000 city reside nts to study(B) it created a climate of passivity for in troverted stude nts(C) it was desig ned for both stude nts and work ing adults(D) it was atte nded by a great nu mber of stude nts14. The “lectures ” in the MOOCs are meant for the students to _______ .(A) do and think actively on their own(B) make up for what they miss in classrooms(C) get freque nt feedback from men tors and peers(D) focus on what they n eed most15. One way on li ne courses are similar to on li ne shopp ing sites is that __ .(A) they make recomme ndati ons for what users do n ext(B) they function automatically for thousa nds of young stude nts(C) they are a boon to computer-savvy stude nts and shoppers(D) they update their contents on an hour-by-hour basis【参考答案】11.C 12.C 13.D 14.A 15.AQuestions 16— 20Most people have see n bullies in acti on, mak ing life miserable for others. Their targets ofte n escape the intimidation relatively unharmed, but sometimes it is too much to bear. That can be true whether the victim is a 12-year-old girl or a 136-kilogram American football player.A member of the Miami Dolph ins left the Nati onal Football League team recen tly because hewas repeatedly in sulted and threate ned by a teammate, Richie In cog nito. Many fans were disgusted by details of In cog nito's expletive-filled voice mail and text messages, while others defe nded his behavior as a n atural part of a rough-a nd-tumble sport. Some people are ast oni shed that Jon atha n Martin, who is 1.95 meters tall, “ could actually be the colu mnist Timothy Egan wrote recen tly in emoti on ally damaged by taunts from a teammate,The Times. “ Can you possibly hurt a hulk with words? ” Based on his own experie nee play ing football in high school, Mr. Egan argues that you can. He was smaller than the other guys and had a big, unruly head of hair that made him stand out. His teammates taunted him. “ Did it hurt?did, ” he wrote. "I knew very well what it felt like to give so much to a game and have people who were part of it, his teammates, hurt him. ”Bullies aren' all men. The Times reported recently that scientists had made big strides in understanding aggression by young women. “Theexistenee of female competition may seem obvious to anyone who has bee n in a high school cafeteria or sin gles bar, ” Joh n Tierney wro' “ but an alyz ing it has bee n difficult because it tends to be more subtle and in direct (a nd a lot lessviole n t) tha n the male variety. ”Researchers found that women were more likely to make mean comments about otherwomen if they saw them as competition for male attention. In an experiment, a group of female college students reacted negatively when a woman wearing a low-cut blouse and a short skirt entered the room, while they barely noticed the same woman dressed in a T-shirt and jeans.?But in perhaps one differe nee betwee n the sexes, in stead of confron ti ng the woma n directly, the others made fun of her once s he left the room.? ” Wome n are in deed very capable of aggress ing aga inst others, especially wome n they perceive as rivals, ” said Dr. Tracy Vailla ncourt, a psychologist atthe Uni versity of Ottawa. For those on the receivi ng end who are young or otherwise vuln erable, the damage can betragic. In September, a 12-year-old girl in Florida named Rebecca Ann Sedwick killed herself after other girls bullied her online. She went to an abandoned cement plant, climbed to a platform and jumped.“ Rebecca became oneof the youn gest members of a grow ing list of childre n and tee nagers apparently driven to suicide, at least in part, after being maligned, threatened and taunted online, The Times reported. And teenagers aren ' t just using Facebook or InstagranotiepiQbtoier.New applications appear constantly, making it difficult for parents to keep tabs on their children activity. Rebecca ' s mother, Tricia Norman, didn ' t know her daughter was receiving messages that said: “You' re ugly ” and “Can u die please? ”“You hear about this all the time, ” Ms. Norman said of cyberbullying. “ I never, ever thoughtit would happe n to me or my daughter. ”16. How did Jon atha n Martin react whe n taun ted and in sulted by his teammate?(A) He remained silent at first and then challenged the bully to a fight.(B) He took no notice of the taunts and insults from his teammate.(C) He could no Ion ger put up with the bully ing and left the team.(D) He accepted the bully ing as a n atural part of a rough-a nd-tumble sport.17. Which of the following is typical of female bullying?(A) Confron ti ng the victim in directly.(B) Caus ing the victim to die in the end.(C) Making fun of the victim with n asty words.(D) Maki ng mea n comme nts about the victim ' s clothes.18. Accord in g to the passage, Tricia Norma n ' s daughter ________ .(A) is a pretty, lovely girl(B) uses Facebook or In stagram a lot(C) committed suicide because of cyberbully ing(D) used to isolate herself from her classmates19. Parents are often kept in the dark about their children being bullied because _____ .(A) their children have no courage to tell them about it(B) parents are not involved in their children ' s activities(C) bully ing is too com mon to catch pare nts ' atte nti on(D) bully ing is in direct and is usually con ducted on li ne20. Which of the follow ing best summarizes the main idea of the passage?(A) In timidati on can damage the victim emotio nally and physically.(B) Bully ing can come in all shapes and sizes.(C) Taun ti ng is limited to physically small and weak people.(D) Female in sult ing is harder to bear tha n male bully ing.【参考答案】11.C 12.A 13.C 14.D 15.BQuestions 21—25Questions 26— 30SECTION 3: TRANSLATION TEST (30 minutes)Directions: Tran slate the followi ng passage in to Chin ese and write your version in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET.In the near future, professors will run their courses over digital platforms capable of collecting data on each student' Tipeseressforms were initially developed for massiveope n on li ne courses. However, uni versities are now foldi ng these platforms back in to their traditi onal classes because they make it easier to share content, host discussi ons and keep track of stude nt work.Soon, these platforms will be able to mon itor which stude nts are spe nding 15 minu tes on a calculus problem and which ones slog away for an hour. This can raise red flags for professors about who might n eed extra help.As more classes move partially or en tirely on li ne, the requireme nts of havi ng a uniform start and end date diminish. It means some students could sail through a semester ' s worth of classe a few weeks and the n start aga in with new courses. It used to be that getting accepted to a prestigious university was how you accessed the best professors and could hang out with the smartest students. That ' s because universities were, for the most part, closed in formati on systems that distributed out their content among a select few. That cha nging.。

上外中级口译第三版听力教程原文及讲解--Unit9第一篇:上外中级口译第三版听力教程原文及讲解--Unit 9 Unit nine.Part one.About single sex education.3.Exercises.1.This is a talk given by an educator about single sex education.Listen and supply missing words you hear from the talk.I am going to be discussing the benefits of single sex education. As a teacher and advisor in an all girl school, I am often asked to defend single sex education.Specifically all girls education as if girl schools were on trial.I personally strongly recommend single sex education for girls. But the arguments against this form of education can be quite powerful. So I would like to begin by pointing out 3 of the main arguments against all girl schools.First of all, critics of all girl schools argue that the separation of the sexes seems old fashioned. It goes against the aims and the goal of feminism educators which is to provide fairness. To make sure boys and girls have the same educational opportunities and are treated in the same ways.Secondly, the critics say that in single sex schools boys and girls can’t develop the ability to interact with one another. They point out that in single sex schools boys and girls can’t learn how to be comfortable with each other and also how to compete with each other. The third criticism is that single sex schools don’t provide children with the smooth transition into the adult world where men and women live together. In single sex schools, these critics say, boys and girls cannot become prepared for a world in which they will work, play and live together as adults. But although these are serious arguments I believe that single sex education is beneficial for girls. In the second part of this lecture I will focus on two strong advantages of single sex education. It values girls’unique qualities and it helps girls develop self confidence.2.The following part is a continuation to the above talk.Listen and then provide the missing information in the spaces given below. The real benefit of all girls education is that it values girls’ unique qualities, the qualities that make them different from boys. What are these unique qualities? Well, I am going to list a few.First of all, girls can often concentrate on higher level abstract thinking at an earlier age than boys can.Secondly, they can often work for longer periods of time.Girls also enjoy collaborative learning activities and so they work well in groups. Finally, as girls mature, they are often kind of co-operative rather than competitive. These four qualities are valued in all girls schools. The second benefit of single sex education is that it helps girls develop self-confidence.I strongly believe that girls become more self-confident without the distraction and different learning styles of boys.In a single sex environment girls enjoy being leaders. They offer help to others and they also ask for help when they need it.For example, if they don’t understand a math or science concept they will ask for clarification. But when girls are in the same classroom as boys they often lose their self esteem.Boys are sometimes a louder, and may jump up out of their seats and wave their arms at people’s faces, if they know the answer to a teacher’s question. If this happens girls typically sink back in their chairs and wait for the boys to quiet down. But if there are no boys around girls can feel free and be themselves. Now it’s true that all girl schools do separate girls from the real world while they are growing up.But in the real adult world boys are the ones who set the rules of the game. And these rules don’t necessarily reflect the needs or talents of girls. In an all girl school girls can become confident enough to challenge the rules. And thenperhaps they can change the real world into a place designed to accommodate both men and women.Part two.Statements.2.Exercises.Listen and then choose the answer that is closest in meaning to each statement you hear.1)This project is urgent.I have to type all these reports by Monday morning. So there goes my sleep this weekend.2)We are thinking of asking professor Brown if he can give the exam during the final week of classes. But we are told that th ere isn’t much chance of that.3)Professor White Head hadn’t planned to invite her to the Monday meeting. But he changed his mind at the last minute.4)Since it’s going to cut your fortune to get your car fix why don’t you just trade it for a new one?5)It is essential to stay healthy when you are faced with important examinations.Studying all night will be good for neither your grades nor your health.6)The committee finally reached a decision. And I couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome.Everybody says they haven’t seen like this for weeks.7)I had a hard time getting through this novel.Who can remember the names of all those 45 characters in it?8)Michael has put all his time and mind into his studies.Though he has only studied English for two years he speaks it very well.9)We’ve undercharged them. The invoice doesn’t include the legal fees or our agency commission. We need to inform them of this immediately.10)We have little choice about when to send the application.Yesterday was too soon to send it and tomorrow will be too late.11)It took 2 weeks longer than usual to get your package because the postal workers were on strike.12)The price of the car was so low that it made Brad suspicious of the value. He hesitated for 10 days and still made no decision.13)When he met us on Thursday professor Baker saidthat he tried to reschedule the class at a time convenient to the majority.14)If it takes Mike two hours to do the East Asian history assignment it will take the rest of the class double the time.15)Why bother to call Smith and tell him about the meeting this afternoon. We will see him at lunch.16)The snack bar is not always this deserted. It’s the end of the semester.Everyone is in the library studying.17)We’d expected the repairs to cost us about 15 dollars, but they charged us 3 times as much.18)Ms.Plate came to meet us at the reception.I thought that she was the secretary, but she turned out to be the president of the company.19)After studying mathematics for two years at a German university in Berlin, she has changed to an architecture program in an American university in Washington.20)Even though the doctor has advised him to quit, Bob still smokes a pack of cigarettes a day.中级口译听力教程第三版4B Part 3.3.Exercises.1.It’s cool for everyone to be successful.Listen to the short conversation and then choose the best answer to each question you hear.M: Mary, do you think you have ever been discriminated against because you are a woman? W: Well, let’s see.I have two answers for that. The first answer is yes. That’s my gut feeling. But sometimes I think no.I am not being discriminated against.I just need to try harder.I guess I am saying yes and no.Look, we are in a society where discrimination is definitely going on in the business world.I see women getting paid less than men do for the same position. And often women get jobs as assistance but they are the ones who do all the work. Also there is thus old boys club, the support network that men have.Men do help each other, and they could help women too.But they don’t.M: So then you are saying that men do have an easier time of it.W: Yeah, it is easier for men.But I have mixedfeelings.Sometimes I think that I am just making excuses for myself. What I ask myself is, “Am I good enough?” “Am I as good as the men?” Perhaps I am not.But I rea lly believe that if I do the work necessary in the business world, I will be able to be as successful as any men.I think that there is much more of level playing field than there was before. There is much more opportunities now for women than when I was younger.M: And do you think successful women help other women?W: Yes, I do.Women tend to think of helping themselves and helping other people too.And I hope that I can help to increase the opportunities for many young girls as well as boys.M: You want to help boys also?W: Of course. It’s cool for everyone to be successful. And I do see progress in the future.I really do.Questions:1)What is this conversation mainly about?2)Mary mentions several things that point to discrimination against women.Which of the following is not one of these things?3)Which of the following statements is true according to the conversation? 4)In which of the following fields does Mary probably work?2.Do you think there is rarely quality now? This is a short conversation about the changing gender roles.Listen and choose the best answer to each question you hear.W: Michael, I’d like to ask your opinion about how gender roles are changing.Do you think there is rarely quality now?M: That’s absolutely not true. The first thing is that the re is still a paid disparity.Women make only about 70 percent of the dollar that men earn. There have been changes in the last 20 years or so, but that have been relatively modest. And there is still that glass ceiling where women hit this invisible barrier as they try tomove up.W: Could you give me an example of the glass ceiling?M: Well, look at this.I am a social worker.90 percent of my colleagues are women. But both the CEO and his boss are men.So the top executives are men, and you know, the lower paid levels, most of them are women.I think that men are much more likely to be raised with the sense of entitlement than women.W: And what about quality at home?M: I don’t think there is a quality there, either. You see I think that gender differences often operate on unconscious levels. It almost never occurs to men that they can do house work just as well as women or take care of children.Even if they have divorced and have custody of a child. But women have been parenting children alone for ever. And women just assume that they can do it.W: How has it affected you in your own life?M: Well, with both of my children from 2 different marriages,I was always the person who got up at night and gave the babya bottle.I was always very actively involved with caring for my children cooking for them. And I joined a play group with my son 25 years ago.Incidentally I was the only male involved. And I loved it.W: Good for you!M: That was very very different from my father’s generation. My father had almost nothing to do with us until we were 8 or 10.He held us and gave us some smiles and so on.But he wasn’t really an active parent. But I was determined to be a part of the joy of it all.W: So what you are saying is that the situation has changed but there is still inequality.M: Oh, yes, I think that’s true absolutely.Questions:1)What’s Michael’s opinion about how gender roles are changing?2)About what percentage of men’s pay to women make forthe same type of job? 3)Which of the following statements is true about the quality at home? 4)Which of the following statements best describes Michael?3.Gender and language. This is a part of a lecture about gender and language.Listen carefully and then supply the missing parts of the answers to the following questions.Good morning. Please take notes on today’s lecture.Everyone should pick up his pen or rather everyone should pick up her pen, or everyone should pick up his/her pen, or her/his pen.Wait let me start again.Everyone should pick up their pens.Is that correct? You get my point, right? The title of this lecture is Gender and Language. What I am going to discuss more specifically is the topic of sexism and language and how to avoid it.First then, is it true that language can be sexist? The answer is yes, it can.Take the example of this word, Mister. What word has the same meaning for women? There is none. There is Misses which means I am married. There is Miss which means it’s none of your business whether I am married or not.Well, not exactly, but you get my point.Let’s turn to the question of gender’s specific terms. Many terms like mailman or policeman are gender specific. They all refer to man.If there are women who do these jobs, so what do we do? Well a safe option is to use what we call gender neutral terms such as mail-carrier or police-officer.Why should we use gender neutral language? Well, first of all, because it describes the world the way really is.If children grow up hearing the word chairman then the internalized idea that all leaders are men which isn’t true.Secondly it’s a q uestion of equality. For example when people say mankind it sounds as if they are only talking about man.But when you say human beings or people then you include both men and women. But vocabulary isn’t theonly problem.Grammar is a problem too.Do you remember the example I gave at the beginning, everyone should pick up pen.Well, I wasn’t really making a joke. The fact is I have to choose a broad noun, and I don’t want to give the impression that everyone in the room is male or female either. So I am facing a d ilemma. What’s the solution? Well, personally, I prefer to say, everyone should pick up their pen(s).I realize this is not grammatically correct. But it does avoid sexism. And you will find that most university professors and writers would probably make the same choice that I do.Look at the newspaper, or look around you on the bus or on the subway. You will see plural pro-nouns in places you might not expect.Part 4.Listening and translation.3.Exercises.1.Sentence translation.Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1)Nine out of ten trade visitors interviewed were generally very satisfied with the fare. And 92 percent of the visitors spontaneously declare to intend to visit the fare again in 2008.2)Some nations have worked to meet the shortage of clean fresh water. They are trying to keep their rivers from being polluted.3)I read that according to recent statistics 67 percent of Americans favor the death penalty in cases of murder. That’s 2/3 of the population.4)A gold watch and a necklace were stolen from a home on Broad Street. The criminals entered the house through a bathroom window.5)A man was arrested at midnight on Harper Street, because he was carrying a handgun without license. He was taken to the police station for questioning.2.Passage translation.Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1)Doctors think that most people cannot live beyond a hundred years. But agrowing number of scientists believe that the aging process can be controlled. There are more than 12,000 Americans over 100 years old who receive social security benefits, and their numbers are increasing each year. Some scientists claim that theoretically and under ideal conditions animals including men can live 5 times longer than their normal period of growth.A person’s period of growth last approximately 25 years. If this theory is accurate future generations can expect a life-span of 150 years.2)Well, the neighbor-hood watch program has been running for more than 5 months, and has been incredibly successful. We used to have a lot of minor problems on our block, but now it’s very quiet.Everyone knows that our neighborhood is off limits for trouble makers.Just last week we won a special award from the mayor’s office. All of us were invited to a big award ceremony. We had dinner, heard some guests speakers, and then accepted our award for out-standing community service.Unit Nine Part one About single-sex education Feminist n. To accommodate Feminists Part two To undercharge(某人)少收(某物的)价款 Invoice发票;发货清单;服务费用清单: Agent’s commission 代理商佣金 En route on the way 在路上;在中途Part three Gender生理上的)性别分类, 性Disparity n.不同,不等。

历年上海中级口译听力部分录音文稿(97.3 - 08.9)97.3SECTION 1:LISTENING TESTPart A: Spot DictationThe development of the Space Shuttle has dramatically reduced the cost of sending loads into space. The Shuttle takes off from Earth like a rocket, and lands again like a huge aircraft. It can transport not only its own crew, but also passengers, and has a huge cargo-hold which is capable of carrying large satellites or a space laboratory. Before the Space Shuttle was created, it was necessary to plan trips into space several years in advance. However, for the rest of the century it should be possible to make space flights every week or so. Any scientist or engineer needing to travel into orbit will simply take the next Shuttle flight, stay as long as necessary, and then return at his or her convenience. It is difficult to imagine the immense opportunities created by the Shuttle. One of the great advantages of having a reusable space vehicle is that it can take one load after another into orbit.Very large space stations could not be launched in their complete form directly from Earth, but they could be built piece by piece in space. The Space Shuttle is likely to be used as a general ―workhorse‖ for the rest of this century, and the building of such stations in orbit should become commonplace.Once these huge orbiting space stations are completed, they are likely to become the platforms from which hundreds of robot space ships could be launched cheaply and easily to explore the solar system and to start mining operations on the Moon. The technology needed for this is already developed and available. And because of commercial and military pressures to develop space technology, it is likely that governments will be increasingly willing to start extensive programs of space engineering, exploration and research.Part B: Listening ComprehensionⅠ. Britain‘s first laughte r therapist, Robert Holden says, ―Instinctively we know that laughing help us feel healthy and alive. Each time we laugh we feel better and more content.‖A French newspaper found that in 1930 the French laughed on average for nineteen minutes per day. By 1980 this had fallen to six minutes. Eight per cent of the people questioned said that they would like to laugh more. Other research suggests that children laugh on average about 400 times a day, but by the time they reach adulthood this had been reduced to about fifteen times. Somewhere in the process of growing up we lose an astonishing 385 laughs a day.William Fry, a psychiatrist from California studied the effects of laughter on the body. He got patients to watch funny films, and monitored their blood pressure, heart rate and muscle tone. He found that laughter has a similar effect to physical exercise. It speeds up the heart rate, increases blood pressure and quickens breathing. It also makes our facial and stomach muscles work. Fry thinks laughter is a type of jogging on the spot.Laughter can even provide a kind of pain relief. Fry had proved that laughter produces endorphins-chemicals in the body that relieve pain. Researchers divided forty university students into four groups. The first group listened to a funny cassette for twenty minutes. The other three groups listened to either an informative tape, or a cassette intended to relax them, or no tape at all. Researchers found that if they produce pain in the students, those who had listened to the humorous tape could tolerate the discomfort much longer. Some doctors are convinced that humour should be a part of every medical consultation, as there is evidence to suggest that laughter stimulates the immune system.Part B: Listening ComprehensionⅠ StatementsQuestion No. 1. Dog trainers have found that almost all types of dogs have equally good senses Of smell. Even though different types of dogs have equivalent sense of smell, they are not equally good at different tasks. However, certain types of dogs are better at certain tasks because of other characteristics they have. For example, beagles are small and friendly, so they are often used at crowded airports to smell for illegal food products in luggage. German shepherds have quick reactions, so they are often used to smell for explosives such as dynamite. Thank you very much for your co-operation.Passage 2:Thirty years ago, when I was a small child, my father arranged for me to spend two summer holidays at a farm in the countryside. He thought it would be good for me, and he was right. It taught me a great deal about the importance of independence. The place was so isolated that the owner‘s daughter, who must have been in her early twenties, said that she had never been away from home or seen a locomotive.98.3SECTION 1: LISTENING TESTPart A: Spot DictationBritain is changing more rapidly than ever before in her long history. In some respects the new British society reflects general world trends. In other respects it has kept its own particular flavour. British society is evolving, that is to say, developing and suiting itself to rapidly changing conditions. Evolution rather than revolution or violent change is a special characteristic of the British way of life. This is shown in one way by how the British people vote at elections. The Conservative and Labour Parties have controlled the political scene for the last fifty years, but today neither party can any longer be sure from which class or income group its support will come. Not long ago you would have expected the working classes always to vote for the Labour Party. The word ―labour‖ means ―hard work‖—especially hard work with the hands. The Labour Party is the party which is supposed to represent the ―working man‖. You would also have expected the up per and middle classes to vote for the Conservative Party. The word conservative means ―keeping things as they are‖. The Conservative Party is supposed to be the party which represents property owners, businessmen and the self-employed. In some respects t raditional British ―class distinctions‖ are becoming less clear, and you can be less sure how people will vote. Many members of the middle class support social reform. Many ordinary working people enjoy a better standard of living and are suspicious of any change which might affect them. But the old divisions between the classes remain. Many Conservatives fear that the sovereignty of Parliament is being threatened by the Trade Unions. Many workers are afraid that the Conservative bosses are trying to keep their wages down. But class feelings have not reached a personal level yet. Middle-class and working-class men can stand together at a football match and be the best of friends.Part B: Listening ComprehensionI StatementsQuestion No. 1. The oldest of the public schools were founded to give free education to clever boys whose parents could not afford to educate them privately. They were under ―public‖ management or control. But today these schools, and similar ones founded within the past 120 years, are mostly boarding schools. The pupils live as well as study there. Some public schools also take day-pupils. Normally pupils are admitted by examination. Since state schools do not prepare children for this, parents who wish to send their children to a public school often send them first to a preparatory school. Preparatory schools are small, private primary schools which prepare children for the public school examination.Public schools have produ ced many of Britain‘s most famous and distinguished men and women and many parents are still ready to make great sacrifices to send their children there. More pupils come from Britain‘s upper classes or wealthy families. Recently, however, there has been a great deal of argument about the future of all private schools.。

What control? First of all, the buttons are too small. I mean you can read anything. Second, what are all those buttons for? Give me a break. I want the volume up. I press a button and the channel changes. Great, I try to change the channel and the volume changes. And we don’t just have one remote con trol, do we? Now, we’ve got the one for TV, the one for the VCR, the one that works with both, the one for the cable, the one for my stereo. See, I am looking out at all of you, and I see your eyes flashing, 12 o’clock, 12 o’clock, that brings me to the VC R. The one time that the VCR did work elate the tape, you should have seen the look on the guy’s face at the video rental store. So I’ve got everything hooked up the computer, now, right? I thought great. I am so happening. Wow, this would do it. I got your internet. I got TVs, movies. I listen to music. Great! Give me more technology. Yes, OK. So, now I got a positive attitude. I couldn’t work anything before. But, hey, with a computer, I am finally able to do it all. Control everything with one small touch of a button, I am the master of my domain. Not, it got worse. And I am going nuts now. And the computer keeps asking me things like, Dave, Do you want to revert to the file that is already opened? What? I just want to watch a movie! I have no idea what i t’s asking me. It does not speak any language that I understand.Part B. Listening comprehension.1. Statements. Then write the letter of the answer you have chosen in the corresponding space in your answer booklet. Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following conversations.M: How did you like yesterday’s astronomy class?W: It was interesting, but the point the professor was trying to make seemed a little far-fetched.M: Oh, that new theory that ocean water came from comets?W: Yeah, do you remember what was based on?M: Some recent satellite photos, I think. Apparently space satellites recently detected thousands of small comets colliding with earth’s outer atmosphere, almost 40,000 per day. W: OK. So they collided with atmosphere. So that’s what’s created the water?M: It’s not that the collision created water. Comets contain water. They are made up mostly of comet dust and water. When they collide with atmosphere they break up. And the water they contain rains down to earth. Ocean water came from that rain.W: Oh, well, this morning I asked my geology professor about that. He said most geologists don't accept it.M: Why no?W: Their research indicates that most of the water molecules from the comet would have burned up as they fell through the atmosphere. Enough rain couldn’t have reached the earth to fill up the ocean.M: Well, did the geologists have an alternative theory to explain where ocean water came from?W: Yeah, he said the most traditional view is that the ocean water came from volcanoes.M: From volcanoes?W: Right. They say volcano fumes are mostly steam. And they claim that it was the volcanic steam that created oceans, not rain from comets.Questions:11) What are these two people mainly talking about?12) What did recent photographs from a space satellite indicate?13) According to the new theory where did ocean water come from?14) What group disagrees with the new theory described in the conversation?15) What aspect of volcanoes does the woman mention?中级口译听力教程第三版9BQuestions 16 to 21 are based on the following conversation.M: Hi, Jane. Say, are you OK? You’re looking a bit tired.W: Oh, I am. It’s my neighbors.M: Oh, so they are acting up again, Ha?W: Unfortunately yes, they are.M: Loud music?W: Not exactly. You’ve been to my apartment, right?M: Yeah, I’ve been there once. It’s a nice place.W: Well, thank you. So you remember I live on the top floor. Well, last night around 11 my neighbors decided to go up on the roof of the apartment building.M: The roof. Really?W: Yeah, they had this guy in from out of town, and they wanted to show him the view. Can you believe it? I am soundly asleep and all of a sudden I hear stomp, stomp, stomp. They are walking around on the roof. It sounded like my ceiling was going to falling.M: So what did you do?W: Well, after about 10 minutes, I got dressed and went up there to tell them to be quiet. I was so mad. T hen of course after that I couldn’t go back to sleep.M: Oh, don’t you hate that when that happens? You can’t fall asleep and then before you know it’s morning, and the alarm clock was going off.Questions:16) According to the conversation who made Jane irritated?17) What did these people do that irritated Jane?18) What time do Jane’s neighbors go on to the roof?19) Why did her neighbors go up on the roof?20) What did Jane do in that situation?21) What happened next?Questions 22 to 26 are based on the following talk. This is kind of a funny story. Sample test 6.Part A. Spot dictation. Directions: In this part of the test you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your answer booklet. Remember you will hear the passage only once. The development of the space shuttle has dramatically reduced the cost of sending loads into space. The shuttle takes off from earth like a rocket and lands again like a huge aircraft. It can transport not only its own crew but also passengers and has a huge cargo hold which is capable of carrying large satellites or a space laboratory. Before the space shuttle was created, it was necessary to plan trips into space several years in advance. However, for the rest of the century, it should be possible to make space flights every week or so. Any scientist or engineer needing to travel into orbit was simply take the next shuttle flight, stay as long as necessary and then return at his or her convenience. It is difficult to imagine the immense opportunities created by the shuttle. One of the greatest advantages of having a reusable space vehicle is that it can take one load after another into orbit. Very large space stations could not be launched in their complete form directly from earth, but they could be built piece by piece in space. The space shuttle is likely to be used as a general work horse for the rest of the century, and the building of such stations in orbit should become common place. Once these huge orbiting space stations are completed, they are likely to become the platforms from which hundreds of robots space ships could be launched cheaply and easily to explore the solar system and to certain mining operations on the moon. The technology needed for this is already developed and available. And because of commercial and military pressures to develop space technology, it is likely the governments will be increasingly willing to start extensive programs of space engineering, exploration and research.Part B. Sometimes, if you’re feeling low, it’s tempting to play slow sad music, but this would make you feel worse. And lifting tune or cheerful song can instantly improve your energy levels and your emotional well being.Music in film and television shows us how music can affect mood. A romantic drama would have a very different film score to a thriller. The old ―silent‖ films originally had a pianist in the cinema playing along, trying to strike the right mood. At times, when watching a film or TV programme, yo u know what’s about to happen because of the music being played –you can anticipate the terror, such as in ―Jaws‖. There’re many times when I’ve turn down the sound during a TV programme and use subtitles because the music unsettles means so much.Playing Mozart when studying is said to increase our IQ. A recent study has showed that children who learn a musical instrument are much quicker at developing spatial awareness and problem solving skills.Relaxation music has a slow rhythm. Sounds are often synthesised and there may be added natural sounds, such as whalesong, birdsong, waves or gentle rain to help produce a feeling of calm and relaxation.点评:这是一篇关于各种音乐与人之间的关系的文章。

0903中级口译考试听力部分文本Spot dictationYou might think that hamburgers were invented in the United States, but that is not totally true. These round, flat cakes or patties actually came from Germany in the middle of the19th century. They were brought to the United States by German immigrants who came from the city of Hamburg. That is why their name was Hamburger Stake. However, people in other places claim that they invented the hamburger.Perhaps we’ll never have a clear answer. But there is no question that the hamburger was a great hit. Why?Perhaps because at that time, industry was growing, and the kind of fast, practical and cheap food was needed for workers. The hamburger became even more popular in the1920s when the first chain of fast food restaurants was started. This chain was called White Castle. It served tiny hamburgers that were sold for only5cents each. Then,in the 1940s there came the drive-in restaurant where customers were served in their cars by waiters in uniform. And the hamburger was one of the most popular manual items.By now,the hamburger was ready to conquer the world and this happened with McDonalds, which was actually a hotdog stand at first. But by the early1950s the hotdog was replaced by the hamburger.McDonalds and other fast food restaurants spring up around the world throughout the west of the20th century. McDonalds alone has sold12hamburgers for every person in the world. The importance of the hamburger to US culture remains significant.About60%of all sandwiches that are eaten are hamburgers.According to some sources,7%of current workers in the Untied States had their first job at McDonalds. But the face of the hamburger is changing according to the times.Nowadays it is possible to buy a chicken burger,a turkey burger,a fish burger or a veggie burger.Statement:1.Mrs Jones came to us at the airport. We thought she was the secretary but she turned out to bethe president of the company.2.After Susan carefully explained her ideas at the board meeting last week, the directors all votedfor the change she’s made concerning the proposed project3.Of the students participating in our university’s research project,73%classified themselves asfreshmen and sophomores.4.Originally we had planned to buy a car by the end of last year, but then with the recentfluctuation of the crude oil prices we decided to postpone the purchase.5.Most people I know are interested in the proposed tax reform being debated in the congressbecause they hope it will lower taxes for them.6.If you’re good at managing your own time and energy,it is very likely that you can do wellboth in your schoolwork and for your career7.Mr.Paul White, thank you very much for your inquiry, but I feel the position more suits afemale applicant.Anyway,I will keep your name on file.8.Is this your best quote?I thought the prices will be coming down now given the currentsituation of financial and economic crisis.st month our manager took a ten-day business trip to Chicago, but he had to stay there for3more days situation as the negotiation turned out to be a tougher one.10.When our children are made confident that they are positive and competent individuals, theywill adapt themselves to the changing society and successfully accomplish personal goals.Talks and ConversationsPassage one(Q11-14)W:What are you laughing about?M:I just saw the serious advertisement on TV for Germen soups. It’s said our products are home-made with the freshest vegetables and fruits. Then a scene in the factory showed that products were prepared and packed by the most sophisticated machinery.W:And I am sure that the word NATURE was put on the jars and cans of the products.I think the stupidest advertisements are those that imply that you are one of a kind.If you buy the product, you will be a very special person. Now you will be just like every other one of the20billion people who bought it.M:That’s really silly. But to me,the dullest of them all is when advertisers put a celebrity on TV to talk about a particular brand of soap or about a particular car.I bet that the celebrity’s never used the product before they got the job of appearing in the commercial.W:Yeah! But most of these commercials work and people remember the product.M:I agree, here we are talking about ads we’ve seen, aren’t we?We are all influenced by those celebrities and brand names.W:I think teenagers are specially vulnerable.Advertisers try to get teenagers used to a brand because they know that in later years, the teenagers will stick to that particular product of theirs.Question11:What in the advertisement has made the man laugh?Question12:When some ads imply that you are one of a kind, what does that mean?Question13:Why does the advertiser put the celebrity on TV to talk about a particular product? Question14:According to the women, what will teenagers do if they are used to a brand?Passage two(Q15-18)Many of you may have heard of jet lag, which is a condition of space disorders, resulting from rapid travel over time zones.Such as on a jet plane. The symptom of jet lag can be quite varied, and may include loss of appetite, nausea, headache, fatigue, insomnia,or even mild depression. Here are a few tips for you to avoid jetlag,or cope if you are stricken by the condition.First, adjust your biological rhythm several days before your departure, and develop a plan to start switching to the time zone of your destination. For instance,if you will be flying from New York to Paris, where it is6hours later, get up one hour earlier for a couple of days,then2hours earlier, then3hours earlier,I will try to at least get half way to your new time zone.Turn lights on during day time in your destination, and off at night time.Second, during the time of your adjustment, especially during the flight, drink plenty of water. If you are not a big water fan, drink some other fluid that is not high in sugar, carbonation and caffeine;avoid junk food, salty food and caffeine, and alcohol on the plane.Of course I say that, but I always have a couple of drinks during the flight. If you do that, just be sure to drink as much water between drinks as possible.Thirdly, when you arrive in your destination, try to resist the urge to nap during the day time.Get outside, during the daylight hours, even it is just to sit in a caféand relax.Try to get a good night sleep for the1st couple of nights. The key is to reset your body’s natural clock to get enough rest. Finally, when you return home, use some of the same tactic above to return to your previous time zone.Q15.What’s the speaker’s definition of jet lag?Q16.What’s the difference of the time zone between New York and Paris?Q17.what does the speaker recommend if you do not want to drink much water during the flight? Q18.According to the speaker, what should you try to do if you arrived at the destination?Passage3(Q19-22)F:Come on Mr.Edision, take a seat.M:Good morning doctor.F:Now let’s get a few details.Shall we?First your age,now you’re40?M:Er,35actually,doctorF:Right,35.And your weight?M:About,105kilosF:That’s rather a lot for your height, don’t you think?M:Yes,Well,I don’t get much exercises, doctor.F:And what kind of work do you do exactly?M:I work with computers,F;So you sit most of the day,is that right?M:All day.F:Right,so tell me,do you smoke?M:Well,I used to smoke20-30a day,but now it’s about10.F:En,Have you had any illness likely?M:Nothing serious, just usual coughs and coldsF:I see. Now,let’s talk about your diet. What have you eaten this morning, for example?M:I’ve had two fried eggs,5bread,toast,butter and jam,and oh,3cups of tea.F:Well,Mr.Edison,that isn’t the best diet now,is it?What else do you normally eat?M:Beef burghers a lot,ChipsF:Dear Oh dear. And what about exercise do you have Mr.Endison?Do you play any Sports? M:Er,can’t say I do really.F:Well Mr.Edison this is rather serious.I think we have to Change a few things in your life, firstly I recommend that you stop smoking completely.Secondly, you need to get some exercise, walk, instead of drive Mr.Edison.Join in a sports club. And lastly,we must make some changes to your diet.No more fried foods,no more chips, and beef burgers, good healthy vegetables, boiled potatoes, grilled meat and fish.19.What does the woman say about the man’s health?20.How many cigarettes does the man smoke each day now?21.What does the woman think of the man’s breakfast?22.Which of the following can not be concluded from the conversion?Passage4(Q23-26)May I have your attention, ladies and gentlemen?Since the international club meets only once every semester for this special event, the first thing on our agenda is to have the secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. So when I finish this opening speech, the secretary will read the minutes of our meeting for the last semester. And then we’ll go through our annual treasurer’s report and decide whether it can be accepted or not.At the top of our agenda, and I’m sure in everyone’s mind,is the International Display Week.It has been proposed for discussion.I was chairman of the African club, and now as chairman of the international club,I know more than anyone else the importance of such a display week.Let me explain. There are ten foreign clubs here representing the foreign students on our campus. The purpose of these clubs is,first of all,to get the students from the same countries together,so they won’t get too homesick, and so we can help each other over the rough spots. And secondly,so that the American students can join the club of their interest and learn about our culture as we learn theirs. Now,about the display. Some of you old hands will have to help me out,as there was so much going on I can’t remember at all.Let me see. There are the Scottish folk dance and Irish one, too. We’ll team up with the folk music club and recruit anyone who can sew to make costumes.Of course, each group will set up a booth decorated with pictures and things of interest in their respective countries, and everyone will wear his national costume.Question23:Who is the man?Chairman of the international clubQuestion24:How often is the meeting held?Once every semesterQuestion25:What is at the top of the meeting’s agenda?International Display WeekQuestion26:What is the purpose of organizing foreign clubs on campus?Get the students from the same countries together,so they won’t get too homesick/they can help each other over the rough spots/the American students can join the club of their interest and learn about different cultures.Passage5(Q27-30)F:Paul,nice to see you back from the university. How do you like your new university?I remember your mum had wanted you to go to London University so that you can live at home and walk or cycle to attend the lectures.M:Well, you know I didn’t go to London University after all.My new university is on the suburbs of an ancient cathedral city and it is almost8miles from the city center. The university is planned on the so called American campus system. That is to say, students live in halls of residence groupped around the main university buildings.F:You mean you live, eat and study within the university proper?M:Yes,I like it.Because we are a real community. We’ve got comfortable common rooms and bars.We arrange dances and parties. We’ve got clubs, theater groups, choirs and so on.And we’ve got an orchestra.I played the drums in it.By the way,how about your university days,Betty?F:I rented a house with two other girls in the middle of the city about then minutes walk from the university. The house is falling to pieces. It is damp and there is no proper heating.M:That sounds awful.I couldn’t work in a place like yours. The district is poor and could almost be classed as a slum.F:I don’t think so.We live among real people who treat us as real people. We’ve got an electrician living next door, who is always coming in and mending our cooker and electric fires. We could try to get into one of the halls of the residents. But we prefer to be independent. It’s nice to belong to the city and to do things outside the university.M:What sort of things do you do outside the university?M:Well, there is a group of us who go and help in a home for handicapped children. And I think in the city bar choir we get on well with the local people, not like you in that suburban district.W:Well,I like history. And my university is one of the best universities for that subject.Besides,it is an ancient city with a lot of historical relics and sightseeing spots. If you can drop by by any chance,I can show you around.F:You bet.27.What do the man’s live?28.What is typical of the American campus system?29.Why did the women choose to rent a house at the city center?30.What does the man promise to do for the woman?Listening and TranslationSentence Translation:1.Please hold my telephone calls and just take a message.I can call back later.I must have a little peace and quiet to concentrate on these figures.请不要挂断,先留个言。

英语翻译资格考试:2022年9月上海中级口译听力真题完整版Spot dictationNext, let’s talk about earthquakes on our planet. Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates. Houses fall down. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes, there is a heavy loss of human lives.Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some earthquakes are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves, also known as seismic waves, or tsunamis can travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings. Very often fires follow the most serious earthquakes. In 1906, the great earthquake at San Francisco broke the gas pipes. The gas escaped, and soon large numbers of fires were burning in the city. The water pipes were also shaken and broken, so it was not possible to put the fires out. There was no water. The Tokyo Earthquake of 1923 happened just before noon. People were cooking meals on their fires at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook, too. Hot materials were thrown on the different parts of the houses, some of which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city. What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls do not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. Over the years, scientists carefully studied the results of theearthquake in different parts of the world, and they are convinced that this kind of building is the safest.Statement:1. China is now the third largest producer of films in the world. However, most of the revenue came from a handful of the movies produced.8. Spot DictationFor centuries, people have been fighting over whether governments should allow trade between countries. There have been, and probably always will be two sides to the argument. Some people argue that just letting everybody trade freely is best for both the country and the world. Others argue, that trade with other countries makes it harder for some people to make a good living. Both sides are at least partly right. International trade matters a lot. It’s a fact on the life of people are enormous. Imagine a world in which your country did not trade at all with other countries. Imagine what kind of job you would be likely to get. And what goods you could buy or not buy in such a world. For the United States for example, start by imagining that it lived without its 70 billion dollars a year in imported oil, and cut back on its energy use because the remaining domestic oil and other energy sources were more expensive. Producers and consumers in other parts of the economy would feel the same if they were suddenly stripped a foreign-made goods like CD players and clothing. On the export side, suppose that Boeing could sell airplanes, and farmers could sell their corps only within the United States, and that US universities could admit only domestic students. In each case, there are people who gain, and people who lose from cutting off international trade. In any case, less or more international trade will have strong affects on your career, as well as your life. For years, American companies are often faced with the choice of buying American-made goods which are expensive, and foreign made goods which are cheap. If the company buys America goods, it may anger tax payers by feeling to keep prices low. But if they buy us foreign goods, it may endanger the jobs of American workers.Recently, congress has passed a law compiling American companies with government contracts togive preference to domestic goods and services.Statements1. Are you looking for someone who can translate this contract into Portuguese? What about our new secetary? I hear she had stayed in Brazil for several years.2. Finding employment is not easy these days even in big cities. If I were you, I would be delighted with such a job offer.3. Also present at the conference is Dr. Madison, who will join our discussion this afternoon to give an expert view on the current situation of global economy.4. If you intend to try bungee jumping, most coutries require that you be over the age of 18 and join a bungee jumping club or be properly instructed for the sport.5. Keeping a business firm running is far more difficult than starting it. According to current statistics, 2/3 of new business firms will fail in the first five years.6. Scientists report that hunting or eating wild animals not only destroy the balance of nature, but also run the risk of being infected by virus from animals.7. We can never learn a foreign language in the same way as we acquire our first. For even a three-year-old child can have thousands of hours of contact with his mother tongue.8. Once you enroll in full or part-time courses at this college, our services are all free of charge except that you pay 30 pence a copy for any photo copying made here.9. If you have yet to appoint a new sale’s manager in charge of our LA office, Mrs. Coleman was born there and has good connections.Talks and ConversationsQ11-14B: Hey Mary, you look depressed. Is everything OK?G: It’s my parents. They are not easy to put up with. They are so old fashioned and they never let me do anything. I go out at night only once in a while, and when I do, I have to be back by 10:00. What should I do?B: Have you tried to talk to them?G: They never have any time for me. My dad’s work comes first, and my mum only sits down with me when she wants to show me off to her friends:”Marry gets straight As, and she made basketball team this year!" Er, I want to move out and live on my own!B: Well, I get along with my parents, but we don’t agree all the time. They worry too much about me. If I’m going away, it’s always: "don’t forget to call as soon as you arrive!", "take this medicine with you in case you get sick”,”you must stay away from drugs." They know I’m not into that. They should trust me.G: I guess parents are all the same.Question 11: What does the woman think of her parents?Question 12: Which of the following is TRUE about the woman?13: What do this man’s parents often ask him to do when he is going away?14: What does the man think his parents should do?Q15-18Ladies and Gentlemen, we all know that even with the advances of science and technology in our modern society, it is very difficult for us to predict an earthquake, let alone, prevented. But people had long ago tried every possible means to record and in some way predict the occurrence of an earthquake. The world’s first instrument for recording earth quakes was invented in China in the second century AD. The instrument, today we would call it a seismoscope was designed by a Chinese astronomer, and geographer named Zhangheng. It was a vessel like device made of bronze and measured in 6 feet in diameter.Inside the instrument, there was a pendulum that was swing from the movement of a trimmer that is too weak to be felt by a human being. When the pendulum swung, it will pull one of the attached bars. The bar will open the mouth of the dragon sculpture on the outside of the vessel. And a bronze ball will drop, and fall with a clang into the open mouth of a frog sculpture below. This seismoscope could not only record the movement of an earthquake, but also show from which direction of the earthquake came.In AD 138, Zhangheng used his invention to announce that a major earthquake has struck 400 miles northwest of Luoyang, the Chinese capital. His report came long before massagers on horse back brought news of the earthquake to the capital city.15. For what purpose was the vessel like seismoscope invented?16. What is the function of the pendulum inside the instrument?17. According to the talk, what happened in the year AD 138?18. How was the news of earthquake brought to the capital city before the invention of such an instrument?Q19-22B: Hi Betty, nice to see you again! How long ago did we two meet in the student centre? I’m glad the final examinations are over, and we don’t have to stay up all night to cram all the academic stuff into our minds.G: Yes. I’m glad we can be here again to relax, and have fun with other fellow students. And now we can look forward to our summer holiday. I’ve been thinking of going to the States for some time.B: I think it would be much better for you to go on holiday here in England than to the United States. To start with, it’s a lot nearer, and so it would be much cheaper to get around. That means you will have far more money to spend.G: That may be true. But thinking about when you get there. There are much more to do in the United States. There are so many different things to see, and places to go. Imagine you could go to New York, San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World!B: Exactly! Disney World! I have been dreaming of going there ever since my childhood.G: So, you are changing your mind, aren’t you?B: I’m still worrying about the cost of taking a trip to the States. Meanwhile, if you stay here in England, you can probably take up some part-time jobs. That way, you can earn extra money to support your study next semester.G: Maybe you are right. I’ll think it over, and talk about it with my parents while I’m home. Anyway, it is they who pay for my study here in the university.19: What has the man been doing recently?20: Why does the man wants to spend his holiday in England?21: Where is this conversation taking place?22. At the end of the conversation, what does the woman decide to do?Q23-26All humans experience stress. It is a necessary part of life. Generally speaking, a person’s ability to deal with stress is affected by his or her feelings, attitude and outlook on life. To start with, my topic for this week’s lecture is teenage stress.Parents tend to think that their children’s adolescence is a carefree period of life. However, study show that teenagers can experience the most stress of all people. They can experience stress related to money, family problems, self-esteem, acceptance by their peers, getting accepted into college, choosing a career, and pressure to do well in school, sports or clubs. One reason for such stress is that childhood has gotten shorter, and the perception of children has changed. With the rapid advance of information technology, children can get messages that in the past, were probably meant only for adults. And the dividing line between childhood and adulthood ceases to exist. Children do not play as many as their games as we used to. And most of their games and sports nowadays are those usually performed by adults. Youngsters are encouraged to use adult language that was once never to be heard around a child.Today, our people are under tremendous pressure to achieve and succeed. It seems to me that the higher our living standard is, the more stress our children experience. In any case, the way by which we live today definitely has something to do with the increase of the level of stress.Q23 According to the talk, how would parents view their children’s adolescence?Q24 Which of the following is not a stress-related phenomenon for teenagers?Q25 According to the speaker, what kind of messages can children get today?Q26 What has contributed to the increase of the level of stress?Q27-30A: Good afternoon, Mr. Brown. Won’t you take a seat? That’s an attractive shirt, is that new?B: Fairly, I got it last month for my birthday.A: It’s very nice. Mr. Brown, I’ve been enjoying working with you, and you certainly have made some significant contributions. Today, however, I need to speak with you about a problem I have observed. When we are done speaking, I anticipate that we will have a solution worked out for this problem. Does that sound reasonable to you?B: Sure, this must be serious. You are so formal.A: Yes, Mr. Brown. During the past month, I have observed you returning late from lunch on 5 different occasions. I have the specific deeds listed here.B: Hey, I wasn’t late, I was running errands.A: Mr. Brown, I’m going to give you a chance to respond in just a minute. I need you to listen first. If we interrupt each other, we aren’t going to get anywhere.B: Okay.A: I first observed this change in behavior last month, but I ignored it, assuming that you were engaging in work related activities. However, the end of the month reports came in, and they reviewed a definite drop in your productivity, and significant increase in errors. I spoke with you on the 3rd, and the 17th. On each occasion, the smell of alcohol was obvious. Today, the smell of alcohol is obvious. Drinking while on the job is strictly against company policy. Is there a reason for this change in your behavior?B: There is no change in behavior. I only had one beer at lunch. That’s not a crime, is it?A: I’d like this to be a problem solving session, not a warning session. You are a valuable employee, and I’d like it to stay that way. I’d like to help you, but you have to be willing to be truthful. Would you like to talk about this with a professional councilor?B: If you think that would help.A: I don’t know if it will help. That part is up to you. But I’m willing to work with you. Here’s the telephone number of Dr. Laurence. I’d like you to call him and set up an appointment. In the mean time, you must understand that alcohol during working hours is strictly forbidden. Failure to observe this rule will lead to dismissal. May I count on you to observe this rule?B: I’ll do my best.Q27 What does the man think of the woman’s opening remark?Q28 According to the conversation, what has the woman observed recently?Q29 What does the woman suggest to help solve the problem?Q30 What is the company rule according to the woman?10. Suppose the gasoline tank of your car holds twenty gallons, and you average 16 miles to the gallon, how far can you drive on a tank-full-gasoline?Listening and TranslationSentence translation1. Workers who can still demonstrate their capacity to carry out their work should not be asked to retire simply because they have reached a certain age.2. We had only expected around 20 people to apply for that post, but twice as many showed up, so we had to work overnight for the arrangement of interviews.3. It is known that human intelligence is attributable to both heredity and environment, but the genetic factors are more important than the environmental ones.Passage translation1. I think examinations are much better than homework. I prefer having exams at the end of a school year to doing homework every week. For me, the problem with homework is that the pressure is on you all the time, and everything you do counts towards your final result. With examinations, you can work really hard only in the final stages. I also like to get up early and go through my notes on the day of the exam. That way, everything is fresh in my mind.2. Listening is one of the things we do most, yet listening isn’t easy. First, we are surrounded by noise, people talking or shouting, the sound of traffic, or the roar of airplanes over the head, which makes any listening job a challenge. Second, we often don’t seem to remember even when we do listen. By the time the speaker has finished a 10-minute speech, the average person has already forgotten half of what was said. Within 48 hours, another 50% has been forgotten. In other word, we quickly forget nearly all of what we hear听力你不仅仅要去听更需要一点点的去记,听一句能复述一句,反复的去听真题,这样次数多了,能做到能这一句能说出下一句,翻译硕士摘录的中级口译听力原文就是一个范例,大家要多多练习。

中级口译听力教程第三版4AAn intermediate course of English listening. Third edition.Revision exercises two.Part A. Spot dictation. Listen and fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard from the recording. There is no doubt that today English is one of the most important and richest of the world’s languages. Probably the most significant factor accounting for the latter quality was the conquest of England by the Normans more than 900 years ago. The conquering Normans spoke French. Most of the inhabitants of the conquered nations spoke varieties of Anglo Saxon of Germanic origin. Of course the Normans were stronger than the logical inhabitants politically, and naturally their language became the language of the King’s court. It also became the language for written documents together with Latin, and was generally regarded as more literally, and somehow better than the language of the common people. In spite of the apparently being worse, however, the language of the ordinary inhabitants of England and especially the language spoken by the inhabitants of the central part of the country did not die out. For centuries the two languages continue to exist side by side. The individual most responsible for bringing them together was a customs official who lived in the late fourteenth century named Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer, whose Canterbury Tales is one of the most extraordinary works in English, practically created or at least made acceptable a new language, which was a combination of the more elegant French and the cruder and more powerful Germanic elements. Since Chaucer’s time the two languages had been woven closer and closer together forming the single language that we now know as English.Part B. Listening Comprehension.1. Statements. Listen and decide which one is closest in meaning to the statement you hear.1) Sandra’s research was completed a year ahead of schedule. So she can now relax herself from time to time for the rest of this year.2) The new employees were told to report to the personnel manager’s office on Wednesday morning. They would receive a week’s training.3) The sales representative had trouble getting his checks cashed. She said the president wanted to talk to me over the phone.2. Talks and conversations. Listen and choose the best answer to each question you hear. Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following talk.Today I will continue my discussion of the behavior of school of psychology. And tell you about what I feel of some problems related to behaviorism. The psychologist wishes to understand human behavior and the human mind. He or she must therefore design methods of investigating human beings as they actually live. The behavior school of psychology, however, has done almost all of its studies under laboratory conditions. Behaviorism seems to want respectability of natural science. But it uses the methods of 50 years ago. Furthermore behavior studies often do not make any great contributions, but the authors were covered this up with mathematical tables in statistics, which are not important for the study. To investigate human behavior in a more natural setting is difficult I admit. Nevertheless, there are at least 2 ways to carry out such a task.Questions:11) Where does the talk most probably take place?12) Who most likely is giving the task?13) What is the main idea of the talk?14) What does the speaker think is the best way to study human psychology?15) What does the next part of the talk most probably deal with?Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following talk.Several months ago I decided it would be wise to investigate the possibilities of buying a life insurance policy. If for no other reason than because I understood it might be a good investment. I got the name of an insurance agent from a friend and called the agent to get some information. From the kinds of questions I put to him the agent could tell that I knew nothing about insurance, so he kindly offered to explore the matter with me in more detail to help me determine the kind of policy I ought to be considering. That evening he appeared at my door promptly at 7:30 without wasting time on amenities he spread his papers out on the kitchen table and launched into a lengthy explanation. I listened attentively as he talked about the differences between various types of policies, and he explained the kind of coverage he felt I ought to have, because of my age bracket and financial objectives. Towards the end of the evening he kindly helped me filled out the application for a 55,000 dollar policy. And then he asked if I could go to a doctor’s office on Friday for a physical examination. I don’t know why but it was not until the mention of the doctor’s appointment that I realized fully what was happening. I was about to sign a life time contract. Yet I had not really made the decision about whether I wanted to buy the policy or not. As a matter of fact the question of need for a decision for me one way or the other had not even come up. Suddenly I felt sure that I definitely did not want to buy the policy. However, since he had spent so much time with me I didn't want to make him feel that he had wasted his time. So I invented an excuse about things I had to do on Friday, and I assured him that I would call him in a few days. Actually I had no intention of going to see the doctor or of calling the agent again. I wanted to forget the whole thing.Questions:16) Why did the author of the passage telephone the insurance agent?17) Where did the author of the passage get the name of the insurance agent?18) What did the author do after talking with the insurance agent?19) Why didn’t the author tell the insurance agent the truth?20) Which of the following statements is true about the author of the passage?Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following conversation.M: Joe, could I have a word with you while you are having your coffee?W: Of course, David. Let’s find a quiet corn er over there.M: The manager asked me to tell you that he appreciated your efforts last year very much. W: Thanks, David. That makes me feel a lot better. I tried my best, you know. You can tell him that I am grateful for his confidence in me.M: Yes, I will certainly pass that on to him. Your sales figures for the last 2 years have been remarkably good.W: Manchester is a good area to work in. There are a lot of businesses opening all the time. I tried to make contact with the managers as soon as I know of a new company starting up. The early bird catches the worm as they say.M: I am sure that’s true. But there is more to that, isn’t it? Joe, you seem to be very confident and this helps your sales.W: Yes, I have been working on that for sometime. I think that if I appear confident as successful people are more likely to buy our goods.M: Well, you certainly seem successful at that. Your sales figures prove that. I was wondering if you could give a short talk tomorrow afternoon on the idea of being confident as a sales representative. Do you think you could put together something on that topic?W: I think I could manage. I will work on it this evening.M: I would be grateful if you could do that for me. I am sure the others would benefit from that kind of talk.W: About how long do you want me to speak for?M: Something like 20 minutes if that’s all right.W: And what sort of thing do you want me to talk about?M: Oh, how to build up your confidence, present yourself to customers, that sort of thing. Then game players, they get hooked on playing those silly games you can buy an d don’t do much else. I call them silly games because I am not coordinated enough to begood at them myself. Then, thirdly, the practical ones, and that’s me. I don’t use the computer very often. But I have worked out some ways in which it can be helpful in everyday life. Well, I started off as an earnest computer owner. But I gave up being like that because of lack of success of programming.M: Like with the games.W: Exactly. Well, you know how easily I gave up. But this time it was going to be differen t. I tried and tried, but I had so many disasters. I blamed it on the instruction book. It was awful, not clear at all.M: Disasters say?W: Well, yes. You know that I had that Italian exam to take.M: Mm, I remember.W: Well, I had read a lot about how computers were useful in language teaching for giving boring but necessary grammar practice. Well, I had to learn a lot of Italian irregular verbs, soI decided to try and write a program to help me. Well, actually what I did was I tried to adapta program for French verbs found in a computer magazine.M: And the computer didn’t like Italian as much as French. It didn’t work.W: No, well, in a way it did, but not as I expected. I just couldn’t get the program right. The verbs kept appearing on the screen but jumping on low of the place. It was quite alarming really.M: It sounds like space invaders. What happened?W: Well, I tried again and again to get the program right. I kept altering it and testing it which meant typing in the list of verbs I want to learn each time I tested. Well, the result was programs never came quite right and I gave up in disgust. But after all those repetitions I found I had learned the verbs perfectly. There was nothing to do with the bloody program. It was just all those hours spent trying to sort it out.Questions:26) What are the man and woman mainly talking about?27) How many main categories do computer owners fit into according to the woman?28) Which type of computer owners are not mentioned in the conversation?29) What did the woman want the computer program to help her do?30) What finally happen to the woman according to the conversation?Part C. 上外中级口译第三版听力教程原文及讲解--Unit 13

Unit 13.Part one. Healthy foods. 2. Exercises.1. Listen to the passage about healthy eating and then choose the best answer to each question you have heard.Increasingly over the past 10 years people, especially young people, have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat particularly processed food is not good for the health. Consequently there has been a growing interest in natural foods, foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers widely used in farming today. Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit, and grain, which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matters. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter which provides it with the essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself has a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers. The main purpose of which is to increase the amount but not the quality of foods grown in commercial farming areas. Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building, and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food, they also produces eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food. Although a natural alternative such as honey can be used to sweeten food if this is necessary, we can’t in fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself, but it does seem to be an addictive. The quantity we used has grown steadily over the last 2 centuries. And in Britain today each person consumes an average of 20 pounds a year. Yet all it does is to provide us with energy in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals, and no fiber. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removed. But it is present in un-refined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to know that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of un-refined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence, the emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on healthy eating.Questions:1) Why have people become more interested in natural foods?2) Which of the following statements is true about natural foods?3) Why can’t battery chickens be called natural food?4) According to the passage which of the following statements is true?2. Listen again and then supply the missing information in the following passage.Part 2. Statements. 2. Exercises. Listen and then choose the answer that is closest in meaning to the statement you hear.1) Thank you for saying that I did an excellent job on presentation. I put a lot of time into it in the last 2 weeks.2) The government has taken many actions to curb inflation, but it is all to no avail. Some people suggest that inflation is uncontrollable.3) As to this agreement, no questions come to my mind right now. But I’d like to read it through again before signing it.4) Is it possible we could meet once a week to discuss our expansion project? Listen to a short talk about the business lunch. And then choose the best answer to each question you hear.American businessmen frequently use social situations to make business deals. One of the best examples of this practice is the business lunch. Therefore knowing how to conduct yourself at a business lunch is often just as important as the business discussion. For formal business lunches it is wise to phone at least one day ahead to reserve a table. After you have been seated and given a menu your waiter will come and ask if you would like to order anything to drink. Nowadays it is quite acceptable to order mineral water, a soda, or fruit juice, apart from wine, or a mixed drink. After he has taken your beverage order, your waiter will leave yo u to make your food selection from the menu you have been given. It is the host’s responsibility to discover whether or not his guests have any special dietary restrictions. If, however, a host does not do that, a guest should not announce his dietary practices to everyone at the table. Instead he should discretely ask the waiter about the ingredients of any dish in question. He should also have in mind a second dish that he might order just in case. Usually the host will allow his guests to order first. Occasionally a host may collect orders ahead of time in place himself. Napkin should be placed on your lap and used periodically to wipe the corners of your mouth, especially when you are eating soup, saladwith dressing, or an en tray in a sauce. When you finish the meal the napkin is then placed on the table beside the plate.Questions:1) Which of the following is recommended for a formal business lunch?2) After being seated and given the menu, what are you supposed to order first?3) What should you do if you got any dietary restrictions?4) According to the talk where should you put the napkin when you finish the meal?2. What a charming restaurant. Listen to the conversation which takes place at a restaurant and then choose the best answer to each question you hear.W: My dear! What a charming restaurant! It has such an old country air about it.M: Yes, it’s one of the best Italian restaurants in town. The deco is pleasant, the music good, and the food delicious.W: Is that the owner’s wife over there? She is dressed in a very latest European fashion.M: She is the owner. She and her family go to Italy every year to keep in touch with the trends in fashion and food, and in deco too. But she doesn’t actually change the food or deco here very much. Constant change would be upsetting to the customers. Besides, the customers expect certain characteristics in an Italian restaurant. And she can’t change those or the restaurant would lose some of its appeal to the customers.W: Like the red and white table cloth you mean.M: Exactly, and the music. But however conservative she is in the restaurant, she always wears the latest style in clothing. The latest dignified style of course.W: Yes. Well, what shall we order?M: I would suggest an appetizer, and then I am having either sea food or chickens since I had red meat last night.W: I think I’d like to try this flounder dish.M: Good. Shall we order wine?W: Yes, let’s have a white wine.M: OK. I will get this chicken dish. Would you like to have pastry and coffee for desert?W: Yes, if I am not too full by that time. Let’s hold off ordering desert until later. Questions:1) What kind of restaurant is the couple in?2) How does the owner appeal?3) What can we most safely infer about the deco in the restaurant?4) What did the man eat last night?5) Why might the woman skip desert?3. A well balanced breakfast. Listen to a short talk about a well balanced breakfast. And then choose the best answer to each question you hear.In addition to exercising regularly, eating a good breakfast is considered by many health experts to be a significant part of a successful way of reduction plan. After a night fasting, the body needs to be replenished with nutrients, in order to maintain a high level of energy throughout the day. Several nutritionists suggest that dieters should eat up to one third of their daily calories at breakfast time. These calories should be in the form of a balanced meal of nutritious food. A balanced meal consists of 5 key elements, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. People who are dieting need a variety of foods to a sure of constant supply of nutrients their bodies need. If a well balanced diet is not followed, the dieter may become sleepy, nervous or feel out of sorts. If a poor diet is maintained for long period of time, the dieters may become vitamin deficient. Vitamin deficiency can cause serious health problems. For these reasons many doctors recommend that everyone, especially those on diet, start the day with up to one third of the daily requirement of nutrients in the form of a well balanced breakfast.Questions:1) What is the talk mainly about?2) According to some nutritionists how much of the days total calories should be consumed at breakfast?3) According to the speaker what short of balanced meal consist of?4) According to the speaker what will a poor diet lead to?Part four. Unit nine. Part one. About single sex education. 3. Exercises.1. This is a talk given by an educator about single sex education. Listen and supply missing words you hear from the talk.I am going to be discussing the benefits of single sex education. As a teacher and advisor in an all girl school, I am often asked to defend single sex education. Specifically all girls education as if girl schools were on trial. I personally strongly recommend single sex education for girls. But the arguments against this form of education can be quite powerful. So I would like to begin by pointing out 3 of the main arguments against all girl schools. First of all, critics of all girl schools argue that the separation of the sexes seems old fashioned. It goes against the aims and the goal of feminism educators which is to provide fairness. To make sure boys and girls have the same educational opportunities and are treated in the same ways. Secondly, the critics say that in single sex schools boys and girls can’t develop the ability to interact with one another. It values girls’ unique qualities and it helps girls develop self confidence.2. The following part is a continuation to the above talk. Listen and then provide the missing information in the spaces given below. The real benefit of all girls education is that it values girls’ unique qualities, the qualities that make them different from boys. What are these unique qualities? Well, I am going to list a few. First of all, girls can often concentrate on higher level abstract thinking at an earlier age than boys can. Secondly, they can often work for longer periods of time. Girls also enjoy collaborative learning activities and so they work well in groups. Finally, as girls mature, they are often kind of co-operative rather than competitive. These four qualities are valued in all girls schools. The second benefit of single sex education is that it helps girls developself-confidence. I strongly believe that girls become more self-confident without the distraction and different learning styles of boys. In a single sex environment girls enjoy being leaders. They offer help to others and they also ask for help when they need it. For example, if they do n’t understand a math or science concept they will ask for clarification. But when girls are in the same classroom as boys they often lose their self esteem. Boys are sometimes a louder, and may jump up out of their seats and wave their arms at people’s fa ces, if they know the answer to a teacher’s question. If this happens girls typically sink back in their chairs and wait for the boys to quiet down. But if there are no boys around girls can feel free and be themselves. Now it’s true that all girl schools do separate girls from the real world while they are growing up. But in the real adult world boys are the ones who set the rules of the game. And these rules don’t necessarily reflect the needs or talents of girls. In an all girl school girls can become confident enough to challenge the rules. And then perhaps they can change the real world into a place designed to accommodate both men and women.Part two. Statements. 2. Exercises. Listen and then choose the answer that is closest in meaning to each statement you hear.1) This project is urgent. I have to type all these reports by Monday morning. Exercises. 1. It’s cool for everyone to be successful. Listen to the short conversation and then choose the best answer to each question you hear.M: Mary, do you think you have ever been discriminated against because you are a woman? W: Well, let’s see. I have two answers for that. The first answer is yes. That’s my gut feeling. But sometimes I think no. I am not being discriminated against. I just need to try harder. I guess I am saying yes and no. Look, we are in a society where discrimination is definitely going on in the business world. I see women getting paid less than men do for the same position. And often women get jobs as assistance but they are the ones who do all the work. Also there is thus old boys club, the support network that men have. Men do help each other, and they could help women too. But they don’t.M: So then you are saying that men do have an easier time of it.W: Yeah, it is easier for men. But I have mixed feelings. Sometimes I think that I am just making excuses for myse lf. What I ask myself is, “Am I good enough?” “Am I as good as the men?” Perhaps I am not. But I really believe that if I do the work necessary in the business world, I will be able to be as successful as any men. I think that there is much more of level playing field than there was before. There is much more opportunities now for women than when I was younger.M: And do you think successful women help other women?W: Yes, I do. Women tend to think of helping themselves and helping other people too. And I hope that I can help to increase the opportunities for many young girls as well as boys.M: You want to help boys also?W: Of course. It’s cool for everyone to be successful. And I do see progress in the future. I really do.Questions:1) What is this conversation mainly about?2) Mary mentions several things that point to discrimination against women. Which of the following is not one of these things?3) Which of the following statements is true according to the conversation?4) In which of the following fields does Mary probably work?2. Do you think there is rarely quality now? This is a short conversation about the changing gender roles. Listen and choose the best answer to each question you hear.W: Michael, I’d like to ask your opinion about how gender roles are changing. Do you think there is rarely quality now?M: That’s absolutely not true. The first thing is that there is still a paid disparity. Women make only about 70 percent of the dollar that men earn. There have been changes in the last 20 years or so, but that have been relatively modest. And there is still that glass ceiling where women hit this invisible barrier as they try to move up.W: Could you give me an example of the glass ceiling?M: Well, look at this. I am a social worker. 90 percent of my colleagues are women. But both the CEO and his boss are men. So the top executives are men, and you know, the lower paid levels, most of them are women. I think that men are much more likely to be raised with the sense of entitlement than women.W: And what about quality at home?M: I don’t think there is a quality there, either. You see I think that gender differences often operate on unconscious levels. It almost never occurs to men that they can do house work just as well as women or take care of children. Even if they have divorced and have custody of a child. But women have been parenting children alone for ever. And women just assume that they can do it.W: How has it affected you in your own life?M: Well, with both of my children from 2 different marriages, I was always the person who got up at night and gave the baby a bottle. I was always very actively involved with caring for my children cooking for them. And I joined a play group with my son 25 years ago. Incidentally I was the only male involved. And I loved it.W: Good for you!M: That was very very different from my father’s generation. My father had almost nothing to do with us until we were 8 or 10. He held us and gave us some smiles and so on. But he wasn’t really a n active parent. But I was determined to be a part of the joy of it all.W: So what you are saying is that the situation has changed but there is still inequality.M: Oh, yes, I think that’s true absolutely.Questions:1) What’s Michael’s opinion about how gender roles are changing?2) About what percentage of men’s pay to women make for the same type of job?3) Which of the following statements is true about the quality at home?4) Which of the following statements best describes Michael?3. Gender and language. This is a part of a lecture about gender and language. Listen carefully and then supply the missing parts of the answers to the following questions. Good morning. Please take notes on today’s lecture. Everyone should pick up his pen or rather everyone should pick up her pen, or everyone should pick up his/her pen, or her/his pen. Wait let me start again. Everyone should pick up their pens. Is that correct? You get my point, right? The title of this lecture is Gender and Language. What I am going to discuss more specifically is the topic of sexism and language and how to avoid it. First then, is it true that language can be sexist? The answer is yes, it can. Take the example of this word, Mister. What word has the same meaning for women? There is none. There is Misses which means I am married. There is Miss which means it’s none of your business whether I am married or not. Well, not exactly, but you get my point. Let’s turn to the question of gender’s specific terms. Many terms like mailman or policeman are gender specific. They all refer to man. If there are women who do these jobs, so what do we do? Well a safe option is to use what we call gender neutral terms such as mail-carrier or police-officer. Why should we use gender neutral language? Well, first of all, because it describes the world the way really is. If children grow up hearing the word chairman then the internalized idea that all leaders are men which isn’t true. Secondly it’s a question of equality. For example when people say mankind it sounds as if they are only talking about man. But when you say human beings or people then you include both men and women. But vocabulary isn’t the only problem. Grammar is a problem too. Do you remember the example I gave at the beginning, everyone should pick up pen. Well, I wasn’t really making a joke. The fact is I have to choose a broad noun, and I don’t want to give the impression that everyone in the room is male or female either. So I am facing a dilemma. What’s the solution? Well, personall y, I prefer to say, everyone should pick up their pen(s). I realize this is not grammatically correct. But it does avoid sexism. And you will find that most university professors and writers would probably make the same choice that I do. Look at the newspaper, or look around you on the bus or on the subway. You will see plural pro-nouns in places you might not expect.Part 4. Listening and translation.3. Exercises. 1. Sentence translation. Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1) Nine out of ten trade visitors interviewed were generally very satisfied with the fare. And 92 percent of the visitors spontaneously declare to intend to visit the fare again in 2008.2) Some nations have worked to meet the shortage of clean fresh water. They are trying to keep their rivers from being polluted.3) I read that according to recent statistics 67 percent of Americans favor the death penalty in cases of murder. That’s 2/3 of the population.4) A gold watch and a necklace were stolen from a home on Broad Street. The criminals entered the house through a bathroom window.5) A man was arrested at midnight on Harper Street, because he was carrying a handgun without license. He was taken to the police station for questioning.2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) Doctors think that most people cannot live beyond a hundred years. But a growing number of scientists believe that the aging process can be controlled. There are more than 12,000 Americans over 100 years old who receive social security benefits, and their numbers are increasing each year. Some scientists claim that theoretically and under ideal conditions animals including men can live 5 times longer than their normal period of growth.A person’s period of growth last approximately25 years. If this theory is accurate future generations can expect a life-span of 150 years.2) Well, the neighbor-hood watch program has been running for more than 5 months, and has been incredibly successful. We used to have a lot of minor problems on our block, but now it’s very quiet. Everyone knows that our neighborhood is off limits for trouble makers. Just last week we won a special award from the mayor’s office. All of us were invited to a big award ceremony. We had dinner, heard some guests speakers, and then accepted our award for out-standing community service.Unit NinePart one About single-sex educationFeminist n. En route on the way 在路上; 在中途Part threeGender生理上的)性别分类, 性Disparity n. 不同,不等。

Revision exercise one. Part A. Spot dictation. Listen and fill in the blanks with the words you hear from the recordings. The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over 80 of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the step pyramid, and the bent pyramid. Some of the pyramid still look much as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or more often for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids. And their vary shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last for ever. It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids, because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved. However there are no writings or pictures to show us how Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. Consequently we are only able to guess at the methods used. Nevertheless by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archeologists had formed a fairly clear picture of them. One thing is certain, they must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. You may think this would be easy with miles and miles of empty desert around. But a pyramid could not be build just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed and certain problems had to be overcome.Part B. Listening comprehension.1. Statements. Many artists travel to far away lands, Rembrandt always stayed within 15 miles of his home, although he lived to be 63. Much of his life was spent in Amsterdam, then the richest town in Europe. In some of Rembrandt’s paintings, we see the rich clothes and jewels worn by people of that time in Amsterdam. During the first 10 years of his career, he was a famous and fashionable painter. Then something happened which ruined him. He became so poor that he had to sell all his furniture and even his rich velvet clothe. To make matters worse his wealthy wife died and her parents took the money she had left to him. The following incident ruined the sale of his paintings. The Amsterdam civic guard had paid him to paint a picture of them. Since he liked to light in shadow he painted the men as they were leaving the armory at noon to go on duty. Making a presentation is often the source of anxiety for people. They usually ranked it as one of things they least wanted to do. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some tips to make your next presentation go more smoothly. First, it’s very important to analyze the situation. Think about your audience. What do they want to know? What do you want to accomplish? What is the most effective way to get your ideas across in the time that you have? Once you figure that out, you’re ready for step 2, preparation. Make an outline of your key objectives. This will help you shape a clear presentation. You want to begin with an introduction. Go on to cover your main points and then end with a conclusion. Remember to be clear and simple. T oo many details will confuse and bore your audience. The third step is practice. One of the best ways to eliminate anxiety is to spend time knowing your material. Reread it and practice speaking in front of a mirror or another person. You could also tape yourself and play it back to see how you can improve. Practice will make you more confident. The delivery of your presentation is the fourth important step. Concentrate on maintaining good gesture, speaking clearly and slowly, and making eye contact with your audience. Beginning your presentation with an anecdote or a funny story is a good way to make that initial contact with youraudience. Remember to smile. Finally, it’s a good idea to use visual aids. They are very effective methods of conveying your ideas. And keep them simple and easy to read. Charts, slides, videos or hand-outs, all of these can be effective tools when used properly. Make sure you are prepared, and know how to use any equipment ahead of time. By following these 5 steps you should be able to enjoy your next presentation. Don’t dread it. Part B. Of course we knew that certain distance stars existed, but only recently did we learn that several of them are orbited by their own planets.M: Why did it take so long to locate these planets?W: You have to understand that they are a billion times dimmer than their parent stars. It will be like trying to see the light of a candle next to a huge explosion. We don't currently have a telescope that can be used to see them.M: But if the astronomers didn’t see the planets through a telescope how did they find them? W: By a very indirect method. The astronomers measured subtle distortions in the frequency of light from the parent stars, and observed that some of the stars seem to rock back and forth. They determined that this was caused by gravitational pull from orbiting planets.M: There is a powerful new telescope being built in Arizona. Will that help them see these planets?W: They should be but to see them at least at the form of small spot of light, and then the scientists will be able to break down and analyze this light. By doing this they hope to learn about the chemical composition of these planets, oxygen and ozone molecules, for example, would be tell-tale signs of life on these planets.M: I am looking forward to hearing more when the telescope is in operation. And I am sure our readers will be interested too.Questions:11) What is the purpose of this conversation?12) What is the conversation mainly about?13) How did the scientist establish the existence of the planets?14) According to the professor what might the scientists learn about the planets by using the new telescope?Questions 15 to 18 are based on the following talk.I am Frank. So how are things in your neighborhoods?M: Well, there is a bit of noise problem where I live. I live down the street from a school. The bell rings every morning at 7:30. It’s im possible to sleep in.W: Oh, what a drag!M: Yeah. And when the school lets out kids are really noisy. However, compared with the other great events, the Modern Olympic Games, and the World Cup, the Expo has the longest history. In 1851, the 1st Expo was held in London under the title “Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations”. At the Expo, participating countries will set up their national pavilions in distinctive architectural styles, with a view to attracting business people, andtourists all over the world. The cost for building such a pavilion could amount to millions of dollars. But it is often far outweighed by benefits and potential revenues thus generated. Usually an Expo will last between three and six months. The character of World Exhibitions has developed through history. Three stages are identified, namely, the eras of industrialization, of cultural exchange, and of nation branding. The 1st era covered roughly the period from 1800 to 1950. In these days, World Exhibitions were especially focused on trade and famous for the display of scientific and technological advancements. The 2nd era stared with the 1939 New York World’s Fair. From then on, World’s Fairs became more strongly based on a specific theme of cultural significance. Technology and inventions remains important, but no longer as the principal subjects. The defining elements of the Expos were cross-cultural communications and exchanges. Finally, in the early 1990s, countries started to use World Expo more widely and strongly as a platform to improve their national images.A study shows that improving national image was the primary participation goal for 73% of the countries at Expo, 2000. Today’s World’s Exhibitions embody elements of all three eras. They present new inventions, facilitate cultural exchange, and are used for city, region, and nation branding.Q15: When was the 1st World Expo held?Q16: According to the talk, why do participating countries build their national pavilions at the Expo?Q1:7 At Expo 2000, what was the primary goal for the majority of participating countries? For example, we can feel things a re heavy so we think of weight as a fixed quality in an object. But actually, it is not fixed at all. If you could take a one-pound packet of butter, 4,000 miles out from the ear th, it would weigh only a quarter of a pound. The reason for such change of weight is thi s: all objects have a natural attraction for all other objects. This is called the gravit ational attraction. But this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart. So the weight of an object on the surface of the earth is not the same as its weight 4,000 miles out in space. What about the weight of one-pound of butter on the surface of the moon? There will be attraction between the butter and the moon, but th e butter will weigh only about one-sixth as much as it does on earth. This is because the moon is so much smaller than the earth. The amount of the gravitational pull that a body produces depends on the amount of material in it. A packet of butter has a gravitation p ull of its own, but it is very small in relation to the pull of something as large as the moon, or the earth.Q23: According to the speaker, what quality of an object is taken for granted by people? Q24: How much will a pound of butter weigh if it is brought 4,000 miles into space?Q25: What is the gravitational attraction?Q26: Why does an object weigh much less on the moon than it does on the earth?2010年3月中级口译听力部分原文(7)Helen, come and look at this.Oh, is this the new catalogue?Yes, it is.
