2. Later Life and Works
2. Later Life and Works In 1713 Swift joined Pope, Arbuthnot, Gay, and others in forming the celebrated Scriblerus Club. About this time Swift became involved with another woman, Esther Vanhomrigh, the “Vanessa” of his poem Cadenus and Vanessa. The intensity of his relationship with her, as with Stella, is questionable, but Vanessa died a few weeks after his final rupture with her in 1723.

2. Later Life and Works
Swift's great popularity with Dublin's population was secured through his preaching and his writings on the unfair treatment of Ireland, but especially through his generous contributions to charity; at his death he left £11,000 to found a hospital for the mentally challenged.

From an individual laborer to a master and colonists,Crusoe seems to have gone through various phases of human civilization, creating a visual picture to manifest how man’s history has developed from the primitive to the feudal, and then to the capitalistic one in the eighteenth century. The novel can be read in different ways. Most simply it is a story of sea adventures.Besides,it is a story as an artistic projection of colonial expansion.Furthermore,it is a song of“the dignity of labor”.It also expresses a desire to go back to a more economic and basic life style. It is a middle class work,a Puritan Tale,a success story.By depicting Ordeals at Sea the novel conveys the idea of the ambivalence of Mastery, the necessity of repentance and the importance of self-awareness.。

Define the following literary terms (Each term should include the time, thefeatures and representative figures or significance)1.English RenaissanceIt sprang first in Italy in the 14th century and gradually spread all over Europe. It made its appearance in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. It means the rebirth of Greek and Roman culture. Two features are striking of this movement. The one is a thirsting curiosity for the classical literature. Another one is the keen interest in the activities of humanity. Humanism is the key-note of Renaissance. Thomas More, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare are the best representatives of the English Reanaissance.2. English EnlightenmentThe 18th century marked the beginning of an intellectual movement in Europe, known as theEnlightenment, which was, on the whole, an expression of struggle of the bourgeoisie against feudalism. The enlighteners fought against class inequality, stagnation, prejudices and other survivals of feudalism. They attempt to place all branches of science at the service of mankind by connecting them with the actual needs and requirements of people. English enlighteners differed in some way from those of France “cleared the minds of men for the coming revolution, revolution,””the English enlighteners set no revolutionary aims before them. They stove to bring it to an end by clearing away the feudal ideas with the bourgeois ideology. The representatives are Joseph Addison, Richard Steele (essayists), Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift (novelists), and Alexander Pope (poet).3. Pre-RomanticismIn the latter half of the 18thcentury, a new literary movement arose in Europe, called the Romantic Revival. It was marked by a strong protest against the bondage of Classicism, by a recognition of the claims of passion and emotion, and by a renewed interest in medieval literature. In England, this movement showed itself in the trend of Pre-Romanticism in poetry. William Blake and Robert Burns are the representatives.4. Metaphysical PoetryMetaphysical Poetry is commonly used to name the work of the 17th century writers who wroteunder the influence of John Donne. With a rebellious spirit, the metaphysical poets try to break away from the conventional fashion of the Elizabethan love poetry. They are characterized by mysticism in content and fantasticality in form. John Donne is the leading figure of the fantasticality in form. Twentieth Century LiteratureⅠDefine the following termsModernismModernism in English literature prevailed during the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. It was a movement of experiments in new technique in writing. Modernism takes the irrational philosophy and the theory of psycho-analysis as its theoretical base. The modernist writers concentrate more on the private and subjective, mainly concerned with the inner being of an individual. Therefore they pay more attention to the psychic time than the chronological one. The major themes of the modernist literature are the distorted, alienated and ill relationships between man and nature, man and society, man and man, and man and himselfStream of ConsciousnessStream of consciousness is a psychological term indicating the flux of conscious and subconscious thoughts and impressions moving in the mind at any given time independently of the person’s will.In late 19th century, the literary device of “interior monologue”was originated in France as an application of modern psychological knowledge to literary creation. In the 20th century, under the influence of Freud’s theory of psychological analysis, a number of writers adopted the “stream of consciousness”method of novel writing. The striking feature these novelists is their depiction of the characters’mental and emotional reactions to external events, rather than events themselves.ⅡFill in the blanks1. Tess, a beautiful, innocent, sweet-natured and hard-working country girl, is easily taken in and abused by the hypocritical rich, constantly suppressed by the social conventions, brutally exploited by the inhuman capitalists, and eventually executed by the unfair legal system. She is a typical victim of the society. Poverty of the family, inhumanity, injustice and hypocrisy of the society decide her tragedy. The two men-the one who takes away her virginity and purity, the other who takes away her love but deserts her on the very wedding night—though apparent rivals, join their forces in bringing about her final destruction. Hers is a personal tragedy; it can also be a social one.⏹On the other hand, there is a strong naturalistic tendency in the novel. Fate plays an important role in Tess’ tragedy. In a way, Tess seems to be led to her final destr uction step by step by fate. Coincidence adds one “wrong” to another until she is caught up in a dead end. So, it is necessary to understand the ending remark of the author: “Justice was done, and the President of the Immortals had ended his sport with Tess.”The Victorian AgeⅠFill in the blanks1.
