It has been recognized that among all the transport modes the sheet flow condition is the most important due to the large transport rate involved. Over the last two decades, considerable research efforts have been directed to the understanding and prediction of these flows. (1)_______ However, since the models of this-kind do not address the interaction between fluid and sediment in a fundamental way, the moving mechanism of the sediment in this high concentration region cannot be properly accounted for. Considering the fact that the intergranular stress and the interaction between fluid and sediment are dominant in the sheet flow regime, a natural and accurate approach is to treat the fluid and sediment as two-phase flow. Asano and Ono et al. are among those who proposed partial two-phased models in which the vertical velocity of particles was approximated by an empirical expression rather than solved in the same way as the horizontal velocity. (2)______ One of such models was developed by Li and Sawamoto. They extended Asano's work and based their formulation on the complete set of linearized two-phase equations. (3)_______

In this paper a complete two-phase flow model is presented for the simulation of the sediment motions on a flat bed under unsteady flow conditions. (4) ______ In order to ensure the numerical stability, a mixed implicit and explicit finite difference scheme was developed to solve the nonlinear equations. The detailed computations are then carried out and the numerical predictions are compared with the experimental measurements.
