To the Lighthouse

There are many different points between to the Lighthouse and other traditional novels I have read. I got some ideas from this novel.

First, the content is simple but complicated.There are only three plots in this novel: a dusk, time lost, and to the lighthouse. The time span of the first plot is only half of day but it costs more then one third of the whole novel.

This part describes what happened to the Ramseys and their friends. What scene impressed me most is that the dinner for fifteenth people. Mrs Ramsey prepared the dinner carefully. Her always makes allowance for every people in the table. She detected the upset feelings and self-abasement of Charles Tansley. She made an eye connection with Miss Lily to show her wish that Miss Lily can comfort Tansley by communicating with him. She can make all the people be in a harmonious atmosphere.

Obviously she has a gift of harmonization and communication. Mrs Ramsey is like the lighthouse in the sea, warming hearts of every one. Her husband’s heart suffering from setback and barrier of getting no success absorbs comforts,

relaxations, and recovery from her; in her children’s eyes, she is a kind mother, who always said “I will protest you” and cherish their immature heart; as well as friends can get help from lives and comfort from mental side. She made Tansley recover confidence, and a marriage between Paul and Mintha. In a word, she can make people get on harmoniously and she is preparing for giving all the time.

The second part is very short and only has a few pages. It briefly introduced the death of Mrs Ramsey, her daughter Prew, and her son Andrew. Ten years was condensed into a few pages, while half of a day costed majority length of the novel. This is a literature devices. Nowadays, many films and television frequently use this technique. Such a technique can highlight the main thesis and topic the author attempts to emerge.

In the third part, Mr Ramsey went to the lighthouse with his children Cam and James, he turned from a ruthless person to a man who can consider his children’s mood and feeling. In the first part, James want to go to the lighthouse, Mrs Ramsey said if it is no rainy they would go there, with a kindness. She didn’t want to let her son disappointed. While Mr Ramsey just directly said the next day would be a bad weather, with no leaving of any hope to his son. He solved with the issue with no considering in

mental extent at any moment, and didn’t care that his action will make others a bad influence all the time.

Now, in the lighthouse, he began to have a deep connection with his dead wife, and realized that sense and sensibility both have a important opposition in human nature. A human can not only live with sense and reason. Just as the departed him, an inhumane person can not be loved by other people. His eight children didn’t like him, regarding him as a dictator, and a violent empire. When he arrived at lighthouse, he was conscious of the proper way of treating people. Actually he got a integration with spirit of his wife.

In my perspective, there is a exposition of one of the topic of the novel. The topic is that sensibility can have a great effect in human, and the spiritual level of human is unfathomable.

The author created to the Lighthouse by using multi-view angles and a large number of psychological activities of every role of the novel. She used a large number of words to describe the mental world of various people, almost of the content is the roles’internal monologue. This can imply that the author attempts to explore more about the spiritual mind of human and the nature of human.
