Owning to the influence of the Eastern and Western tradition, religious belief, language worship, there are different apotheoses of the numbers between the East and the West. Besides, there are many things in common and similar laws, especially in the Worship of Number. In the past, scholars at home and abroad usually study the problem from a series of number perspective and few from the specific number perspective. This thesis first of all summarizes the origin and development stages of numerology study, followed by the interpretation of connotation, denotation and the symbolic meaning about SEVEN from semiotics. Later, the article gives the applications of SEVEN in the eastern and western society, culture and daily life, attempting to further compare the connotation, denotation and the symbolic meaning of the Number SEVEN in the East and West. Introduction Generally speaking, romanticism was the artistic movement in literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, philosophy and historiography in almost every country of Europe, theUnited States, and other countries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Romanticism was concerned with the expression of the individual’s feelings and emotions. As a reaction to the industrial revolution, romanticism emphasized the individual, the subjective, the imaginative, the personal, the irrational, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental. “The romantic spirit originally came into being and gradually strengthened in Germany, France, and England from the middle of the eighteenth century, as a reaction against the prevailing neoclassical spirit and rationalism during the Age of Reason.” ? Ⅱ. Historical Background A. Romanticism in England Romanticism as a literary movement came into being in England early in the late eighteenth century. It first made its appearance in England as arenewed interest in medieval romances. In 1798, William Wordsworth1, the representative poet of the early romanticism in England, and his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge2 published their joint work Lyrical Ballads. The publication of the work marked the break with classicism and the beginning of the Romantic Age. “William Wordsworth’s definition of poetry in his Lyrical Ballads breaks the rigid boundaries on poetry set by Neo-classicism and marks the birth of Romantic theory of poetry. It is a milestone in the history of English literature.” ? B. Romanticism in America The romantic period was one of the most important periods in the history of 2 American literature. It stretched from the end of the eighteenth century through the outbreak of the Civil War. The literary movement of American Romanticism was generallydivided into two stages: pre-romanticism and post-romanticism. The former referred to the stage from 1770s to 1830s; the latter included thirty years’flowering time (1830—1860) before American Civil War and ten years’declining time after the Civil War(1865—1875). ? Characteristics of Romanticism Generally speaking, romanticism has several prominent characteristics in English literature and American literature, which distinguish it from the so-called classic literature. Both English and American romanticists paid great attention to the spiritual and emotional life of man and nature.
