IMPREGNATION OF CASTINGS
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard establishes the procedure to be followed when impregnating castings which contain an
undesirable degree of porosity and/or shrinkage.
2. PURPOSE
2.1 Impregnation shall be used when specified on the engineering print or when deemed necessary by
Manufacturing to produce leak free parts.
3. APPLICATION
3.1 Impregnation is recommended for aluminum die castings and must be applied after finish machining.
4. CLEANING
4.1 All parts must be clean and free of oil and moisture prior to impregnation. Vapor degreasing is preferred.
PROCEDURE - GE Permafill 3255 or Imprex 95-500 Sealant
5. IMPREGNATION
5.1 Subject parts to a vacuum of 25-30 inches of mercury for 15 minutes minimum.
5.2 Subject parts to a pressure of 90 PSI +30/-5 of air for 15 minutes minimum.

Cure parts in hot oil at 275°F, ± 15 degrees for a minimum of 45 minutes. Rinse parts until clean.

5.6 Parts may be marked with letter "I" on nonmachined surface when deemed necessary for process control.
6. IMPREGNATION PROCEDURE - Ultraseal PC 504, Imprex 95-1000 or Imprex 95-1000A.
6.1 Subject parts to a vacuum of 25-30 inches mercury for 10 minutes minimum.
6.2 Subject parts to a pressure of 90 PSI +30/-5 of air for 10 minutes minimum.
6.3 Agitate parts in warm water (70-100°F), rinse until clean.
6.4 Agitate parts in water, rinse for one minute minimum.
6.5 Cure parts in hot water (190°F, ±15) for a minimum of 10 minutes. Parts will flash dry after curing and do
not require rinsing.
6.6 Parts may be marked with letter "I" on nonmachined surface when deemed necessary for process control.
7. IMPREGNATION PROCEDURE - Loctite Resinol RTC
7.1 Subject parts to a vacuum of 28.5 HG minimum pressure for a time period sufficient to evacuate air from
sealant and parts.
7.2 Raise basket above sealant level and centrifuge for 2 minutes.
7.3 Immerse basket into clear water overflow at room temperature for 1-5 minutes. Activate air agitator 1-5
minutes, or until clean.
7.4 Immerse basket into catalyst solution and oscillate 10-20 seconds. Then soak for 1-5 minutes.
7.5 Immerse basket in corrosion inhibitor and oscillate.
7.6 Parts may be marked with letter "I" on nonmachined surface when deemed necessary for process control.
