The significance of his essays
• “Tatler”and“Spectator”provide a new code of social morality for the rising bourgeoisie. • They give a ture picture of the social life of England in the 18th century. • They developed a form of character sketching and story telling,which were widely used in the modern novels.
Contribution
Addison developed the form of letter writing to the verge of the epistolary novel(书信体 小说). Addison created a perfect style: lucid(clear), colloquial ,full of individuality and yet refined by the choice of words. Humor ,intimacy and elegance are the striking features of the English familiar essay(随笔).

• Joseph Addison was born in 1272.When he was still a young boy,he met Steele,who became Addison’s life-long friend. • At 15,the two boys went to Oxford,to the university.Young Addison soon became known as a writer of verses.
Tatler
“the Tatler” was published three times a week.The paper became extremely popular because it was just the sort of thing that suited the needs of the reading public among the bourgeoisie.
