Summary

the total system should be considered and not just an individual element or sub-system is isolation. The participants in the channel gain competitive advantage through improving the overall channel efficiency by reducing risk and effectively leveraging the corporate resources of each channel member.

Total Logistics Concept (TLC)


The Total Logistics Concept aims to treat the many different elements that come under the broad category of distribution and logistics as one single integrated system. TLC is a recognition that the interrelationships between different elements need to be considered with in the context of the broader supply chain.

In the context of economic crisis, K company decide to save costs in logistics. And marketing study personnel indicate that the cardboard box is an unnecessary cost because it does not provide any significant additional protector to the quite robust plastic toys and it does not appear to offer any significant marketing advantages.

One unforeseen result however is that the toys without their boxers cannot be stacked on to wooden pallets because they are unstable but must be stored and moved instead in special trays. These trays are totally different to unit load that is currently used in the warehouse and on the vehicles (i.e. the wooden pallet).

Q3: What result has been got in logistics? The additional cost penalty in providing special trays and catering for another type of unit load for storage and delivery is a high one much higher than the saving made on the distribution system.
- cheap raw material decrease the cost of purchasing but turns out to need additional costs e.g. machining to achieve the desired finish, the extra machining cost… - companies can set up an installation cheaply because the cost of construction is lower, however these areas will be remote from the marketplace for the goods produced
