I. Useful Words & Phrases (Text A)
1. abolish vt. (L7)end the existence of (a custom, an institution, etc) 废除,废止(习俗、制度等)
New Zealand abolished the death penalty for murder in 1941.
新西兰在1941年废除了谋杀罪死刑。
Many students would like to abolish homework. 很多学生都愿意取消家庭作业。
Collocation:
abolition n. 废除,废止;消除,取消 abolitionist n. 废除论者
the abolition of income tax 取消所得税 the abolition of hanging 废除绞刑
2. earn a living (L11)work hard enough to cover the costs of one’s food, accommodation, etc 谋生
He earned a hard living taking some odd jobs. 他靠打零工勉强度日。
He had to work all day and every day to earn a living. 为了谋生,他只有永不间歇地工作。
Collocation:
谋生: earn one’s living / earn one’s livelihood / make a living
Happy is the man who can make a living by his hobby. 以爱好某生的人是幸福的。
Even so we could barely make a hand-to-mouth living. 即使这样,我们也只能勉强糊口。
3. coincide vi. (L23)
1. be identical or very similar to sth else 一致,相符
His tastes and habits coincide with those of his wife. 他的兴趣和习惯与他妻子一致。
Our ideas on this matter coincide. 我们对此事的想法一致。
2. (of events) occur at the same time (事情)同时发生
Her birthday coincides with her wedding anniversary. 她的生日和结婚纪念日在
同一天。
To his disappointment, the football practice coincided with his classes.
他很失望,足球训练与他的上课时间相冲突。
Collocation: coincidence n. 巧合;相符,一致
coincidental a. 偶然,巧合 coincidentally adv. 偶然地,巧合地
What a coincidence to meet you here in Edinburgh. 能在爱丁堡遇到你真是巧啊!
The similarity between these two essays is too great to be coincidental.
这两篇文章雷同的地方很多,并非巧合所致。
4. at a guess (L37) without being certain or exact 据推测,粗略估计
At a guess there are about four hundred people in the hall. 估计大厅里有四百人左右。
At a guess I shall say we are speeding at fifty kilometers an hour.
我猜测我们正以每小时五十公里的速度在前进。
Collocation:
guess at 猜,估计anybody’s guess 谁也说不准的事
by guess 靠猜 by guess and by god/gosh 凭瞎猜,凭粗略估计
miss one’s guess 猜错,推测错
It’s anybody's guess who will win. Let’s wait and see. 输赢谁也说不准。让我们等着瞧吧。
I can’t even guess at what you mean. 我不明白你是什么意思。
5. division n. (L39) dividing or being divided 分;分割;划分
The river forms the division between the old and new parts of the city.
这条河成了新老城区的分界线。
They decided to make the division of the students into three groups.
他们决定把学生们分成三组。
Collocation:

the division of time into months, weeks and days 把时间分成月份,星期和日期

6. boredom n. [U] (L50) state of being bored, tedium 厌烦,厌倦
He had nothing to do and found the boredom hardly endurable.
