Reading Comprehension (50%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D .You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:Passage OnePopulation tends to grow at an exponential(指数的)rate. This means that they progressively double. As an example of this type of growth rate take one penny and double every day for one month. After the first week, you would have only 64 cent, but after the fourth week you would have over a million dollars. This helps explain why the population has come on“all of a sudden”took from he beginning of human 1ife to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. That repents(缓慢进行) a time span of at least two million years. Then it took from 1830 to 1930 for world population to reach 2 billion. The next billion was added by 1960 only thirty years and in 1975 world population reached 4 billion which is another billion people in only fifteen years.World population is increasing at a rate of 9, 000per hour, 220,000 per day and 80 million per year. This is not only due to higher birth rate, but to lower death rate as well. The number of births has not declined at the same rate as the number of deaths. Some countries such as Columbia, Thailand, Morocco, Costa Rica and the Philippines are doubling their population about every twenty-one years with a growth rate of 3.3 percent a year or more. The United States is doubling its population about very eighty-seven years, with a rate of 0.8 percent per year. (81)Every time a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much of everything, including hospitals, schools, resources, food and medicines to care for its people. It is easy to see that this is very difficult to achieve for the more rapidly growing countries.41. This passage chiefly discussesA. the growth of world population.B. one type of the exponential rate.C. the population problem of more rapidly growing countries.D. the possible ways of dealing with the rapid population growth.42. According to the passage what helps to explain why the population problem has come on “all of a sudden”?A. The penny that doubles itself every day for one month.B. The time span of at 1east two million years in human history.C. An illustration of the exponent growth rate given by the author.D. The large amount of money you would luckily make after the fourth week.43. It took for the world to increase its population from 1 billion to 4 billion.A. 100 yearsB. 175 yearsC. 1975 yearsD. over two million years44. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. World population is increasing at a rate of 150 per minute.B. Lower death rate also contributes to world population growth.C. The population of Columbia has been doubling every year for 21 years.D. The United States is usually doubling its population on about every 87 years.45. When a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much of everything including __.A. hospitals and medicinesB. schools and studentsC. food and manpower resourcesD. all of the aboveQuestions 46 to 50 based on the following passage:Passage TwoWomen are on the whole more verbal than men. They are good at 1anguage and verbal reasoning. while men tend to be skilled at tasks demanding visual-spatial(视空)abilities. In fact, along with aggression these are the most commonly accepted difference between these sexes.Words are tools for communicating with other people especially information about people. They are mainly social tools. Visual and spatial abilities are good for imagining and manipulating objects and for communicating information about them. Are these talents programmed into the brain? In some of the newest and most controversial research in neurophysiology(神经生理学), it has been suggested that when it comes to the brain males are specialists while women are generalists. But one knows that, if anything this means in terms of the abilities of the two sexes. Engineering is both Visual and spatial and it’s true that there are relatively few women engineers. But women become just as skilled as men at shooting a rifle or driving a car task that involve visual-spatial skills. They also do equally well at programming a computer, which is neither visual nor spatial. Women do, however, seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves. We all know men for whom machines seem to beextensions of their identity. (82)A woman is more likely to see her car, rifle or computer as a useful tool but not in itself fascinating.46. According to the passage, women are usually good at_____.A. body languageB. logical reasoningC. tasks demanding for the use of wordsD. both A and B47. Why do women seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves?A. Because they have no visual-spatial skills.B. Because they are only good at 1anguage and verbal reasoning.C. Because they are less likely to see their charming or interesting aspects.D. Because they rarely use machines such as cars, rifles, computers, etc.Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:Passage ThreeThe US. government has recently helped people learn more about the dangers of earthquakes by publishing a map. This map shows the chances of an earthquake in each part of the country. (83)The areas of the map where earthquakes are most likely to occur are called earthquake “belt”. The government is, spending a great deal money and is working hard to help discover the answer to these two questions: l. Can we predict earthquake? 2. Can we control earthquakes? To answer the first question, scientists are looking very closely at the most active fault(断层)systems in the country such as the San Andreas fault in California, a fault is break between two sections of the earth’s surface. These breaks between sections are the place where earthquake occurs.Scientists look at the faults for changes that might show that an earthquake was about to occurs. But it will probably be many years before we can predict earthquakes accurately. And the control of earthquakes is even farther away.Nevertheless, there have been some interesting developments in the field of controlling earthquakes. The most interesting development concerns the Rocky Mountain Arsenal earthquakes. Here water was put into a layer of rocks 4000 meters below surface of the ground. Shortly after this injection of water, there were a small number of earthquakes. Scientists have decided that the water which was injected into rocks works like oil on each other. When the water“oiled”the fault, the fault became slippery and the energy of an earthquake was released. Scientists are still experimenting at the site of these earthquakes. They have realized that there is a connection between injection of the water and the earthquake activity. They have suggested that might be possible to use this knowledge to prevent very big destructive earthquakes, that is, scientists could inject some kind of fluid like water into faults and change one big earthquake into a number of small, harmless earthquakes.51. Earthquake belts are .A. maps that show where earthquakes are likely to occurB. zones with a high probability of earthquakesC. breaks between two sections of the earth’s surfaceD. the two layers of earth along a fault52. Harmful earthquakes can be possibly prevented by causing small harmless earthquake.54. What can be said about the experiments at Rocky Mountain Arsenal?A. They have no practical value in earthquake prevention.B. They may have practical value in earthquake prevention.C. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s triumph of killing his prey.To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving(进化) as Cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting field. (84)Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed:They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attack. Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting the food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life was put to a new use——that of controlling and domesticating (驯养) their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival.(85)The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences(后果), but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that was no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten, but there were other purposes, much simpler of obtaining a meaty meal.56. Reading Comprehension (50分)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D .You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:Passage OneLearning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I’d ask whether anyone in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up.“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.“Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audienc e… not to be inhibited (拘谨;抑制) …not to be nervous…”Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’t hear much about gr-ammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to reach out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your longstanding nervous inhibitions. It is the same in writing. (81) The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibi-tions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what y-ou wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and reach out to the person at the other end of the line.Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you’re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it’s necessary until you’ve reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously “talk on paper.”41. The main task of a public speech course is to ________.A.teach spoken-language experienceB.teach how to use gestures to assist speechC.help the learners overcome nervousnessD.teach how to control the volume of the speaker’s voice42. Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that a writer should ___________.A.overcome his or her nervousness in the first placeB.watch his or her grammar and vocabularyC.collect a lot of data before writingD.take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing43. In the author’s opinion_________.A.writing needs more experience and skill than public speakingB.both writing and public speaking require effortC.writing is imaginativeD.public speaking is not so natural as writing44. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Not many students feel the need to learn public speakingB.Training is necessary before you can speak with scriptC.In public speaking, the audience are more nervous than the speakerD.Writing is just like making a public speech on paper45. This selection is mainly about learning how to _______.A.make a public speechB.talk on paperC.behave properly in public speechD.express strong emotion on paperQuestions 46 to 50 based on the following passage:Passage TwoIn the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive.(82)Resources on land are beginning to grow less. The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man’s needs. The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology are impressive. Oil and gas explorations have existed for nearly thirty years. Valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, nickel and copper and so on exist on the ocean floor, ready to be mined.Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental peoples.Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy such as hydroelectric power.Technology is enabling man to explore ever deeper under the sea. The new undersea technology is providing divers with diving suits and undersea chambers that are kept at sea level pressure. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. By the year 2000, experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.46. What is the best title for the passage?A. Needs of .ManB. Sources of..EnergyC. Sea HarvestD. Sea Exploring Technology47. According to the author, technology for exploring the sea is important because______.A.man cannot travel farther into spaceB.resources on land are running shortC.it’s a lot of fun diving into the seaD.ancient people used to explore the sea48. Why does the author mention a steamship?A.To indicate that it is warmer in the ocean than on land.B.To show that a steamship is better than other kinds of ship.C.To argue that man should use steamships more than other means of transportation.D.To illustrate that man can make use of sources of energy from the sea.49. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.man hasn’t completely developed the riches of the seaB.technology for exploring the sea has been solvedC.planting rice in the sea will be made possible in a short timeD.in the near future man can live on the ocean floor50. The word “exploit” in the last paragraph could best be replaced by________.A. evaluateB. developC. gatherD. scatterQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:Passage ThreeYour passport is your official identification as an American citizen. In American, most people never consider obtaining a passport unless they are planning a trip out of the country. In Europe, where travel from one country to another is much more common, almost everyone carries a pass- port. A passport is final proof of identity in almost every county in the world. In 1979 almost 15 million American held passports. Most of these passports were obtained to travel outside the country because, except for a few Western nations, passports are required to enter every country. And if you travel abroad, you must have a valid passport to return the country. When traveling abroad, you will need a passport for identification when exchanging dollars for francs or marks or other foreign currency. You may also need your passport to use a credit card, buy an airplane ticket or check into a hotel. As a passport is an official U.S. document, it is valuable as identification in any emergency overseas, such as floods, fires or war.Don’t confuse passports and visas. (83)Whereas a passport is issued by a country to its citizens, a visa is official permission to visit a country granted by the government of that country. For some years, many countries were dropping their visa requirements, but that trend has reversed. They may be obtained from the embassy of the country you wish to visit.Passport applications are available at passport agency offices in large cities like Boston, New York, or Chicago. In smaller cities, applications are available at post offices and at federal courts. To get your first passport, you must submit the application in person, along with a birth certificate and two pictures.51. The main purpose of this passage is to___________.A.discuss traveling in other countries B.distinguish between passports and visasC.discuss the financial uses of a passport D.provide information about passports52. Passports are beneficial for___________.A. exchanging currencyB. using a credit cardC. checking into hotelsD. all of the above53. We can conclude from the passage that_________.A.passports are more important than visasB.visas and passports are the same thingC.foreign government issue visas instead of passportsD.visas are required to obtain passports54. The passage suggests that_________.A.Most people don’t realize how important passports areB.passports aren’t important once you are in the country you’ve chosen to visit C.passports are simple to obtain through the mailD.passports are obtained at the embassy once you enter a country.55. As used in this passage, the word “valid” in the second paragraph means__________.A. foreignB. legalC. monetaryD. illegalQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Passage FourI hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At young age you ought to be growing away from you parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are a1l taking the same way of snowing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance. They say they want to dress as they please, but all of them wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music, but all of them end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in this and that way is that the crowd is doing it.(84)It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. These days every teenager can 1earn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. (85)All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well,go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-will the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.56. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell _____.A.readers how to be popular with people aroundB.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselvesC.parents how to control and guide their childrenD.people how to understand and respect each other57. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around, Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a prcssure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable(急躁的)and qusrrelsome and will fight over a picce of bread. Other birds chirp(叽叽喳喳)and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won’t get snother chance for an bour on two. Birds also seek safe placcs before a storm, You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building. Pre-storm low pressure makes the are so thin that birds have difficulty flying. It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying abead of a storm.By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.45.The word“indicators”in paragraph I probably means .(C)A.mapsB.servicesC.signsD.stations46.There will be a storm if birds . By mistake, Prcsident Chnton’s advisers thought that Koreans have the same naming customs as the Japanese. Clinton hadnot been told that, in Korea, wives keep their family names. President Kim Young Sam’s wife was named Sohm Myong Suk.Thercfore, she should be addressed (称谓)as Mrs. Sohn.President Cuntot arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not changed his culture gears. His failare to follow Korean customs gave the imprassion that Korea was not as important to him as Japan. In addition to Koreans. Some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names. This practice often puzzles(使困惑) English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil’s parents. They become puzzled about the s tudent’s correct last name. Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian cultures.Mexican naming customs are different as well. When a womanmarries, she keeps her family name and adds her husband’s name after the word de (of). This affects (影响)how they fill in forms in the United States. When requested to fill in a middle name, they generally write the father’s family name. But Mexicans are addressed by the family name of the mother. This often causes puzziement. Here are a few ways to deal with such difficult situations:don’t always think that a married woman uses her husband’s last name. Remember that in may Asian cultures, the order of first and last names is reversed (颠倒),Ask which name a person would prefer to use. If the name is difficult to pronounce, admit it, and ask the person to help you say it conectiy.49.The story of Bill Clinton is used to . He found that teens who used computers, even just a few hours a week, showed incrcased signs of loneliness and socol isolation.“Chatting onine may be better than watching television, but it’s worse than hanging out (闲逛)with real friends,”he said.Today’s teens, however, don’t see anyt hing strange in the fact that the computer takes up a central place in their social lives,“School is busy and full of pressurs. There’s almost no time to just hang out.”said Parker Rice, 17. “Talking online is just catch up time.”Teens say they feel good about what they say online or taking the time to think about a reply. Southeast Asians leave their poorer countries for their richer neighbours. Many of these wage earners return in the end. In the meantime, they send home huge amounts of money-in the Philippines’ case, over 10% of its GDP. Between January and November, the amount was up 18% on the same period of 2005, Poverty and unemployment are still bigh in the Philippines and other labour exporring(劳务输出)countries. They would be far worse but for this outflow of bodies and inflow of doflars As for those Asian countries that inport (输入)labour,as in Europe, falling birth rates mean they are going to need more foreign workers. On Jamuary 13th leaders of the Association of Southeast AsianNations(ASEAN)signed an agreement to help migrant(流动的)workers-with the realization that the flow of labour between their countries is a growing proble m that they cannot blame on outsiders. A 2005 study showed that 8.4 million Southeast Asians worked outside their home countries, but this did not includethe huge numbers of Indonesians doing so without papers. So the true total is probably rather higher.Of the ten ASEAN countries, the Philippines,Indonesia,Myanmar,Carnbodia,Victram and Lacs export labour, Singapore and Brunci import it, and Thailand and Malaysia do both. Sriracaki of the UN’s Internstional Labour Organiztion points out that,in the next ten years, the total labour foree of the worker expotting countries should grow by about a third. It makes semse to work on the problem before it gets out of control.People in the receiving countries seem to be worried about competition for their jobs. Most Thais said theit government should admit (准入) no more foreign workers, and a few thought otherwise. Even in Singapore, just over ball of people are against adunitting more foreign workers. Malaysians think that the incrcase in foreign workers has worsened crime rates(犯罪率).57.It can be inferred from the case of the Philippines that . Reading Comprehension(50分)阅读4片,样题提供前三篇Directions: There are 4 passages in this part, each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneLearning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I’d ask whether anyone in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up.“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.“Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience…not to be inhibited (拘谨;抑制)…not to be nervous…”Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to reach out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your longstanding nervous inhibitions. It is the same in writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what you wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and reach out to the person at the other end of the line.O f course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you’re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it’s necessary until you’ve reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously “talk on paper.”4l. The main task of a public speech course is to ________.A. teach spoken-language experienceB. teach how to use gestures to assist speechC. help the learners overcome nervousnessD. teach how to control the volume of the speaker’s voice42. Learning how to write is similar to learning how tospeak in public in that a writer should ___________.A. overcome his or her nervousness in the first placeB. watch his or her grammar and vocabularyC. collect a lot of data before writingD. take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing43. In the author’s opinion, _________.A.w riting needs more experience and skill than publicspeakingB.b oth writing and public speaking require effortC.w riting is imaginativeD.p ublic speaking is not so natural as writing44. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.N ot many students feel the need to learn publicspeaking.B.T raining is necessary before you can speak with script.C.I n public speaking, the audience are more nervousthan the speaker.D.W riting is just like making a public speech on paper.45. This selection is mainly about learning how to _______.A.m ake a public speechB.t alk on paperC.b ehave properly in public speechD.e xpress strong emotion on paperPassage TwoIn the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to grow less. By the year , experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.46. What is the best title for the passage?A. Needs of ManB. Sources of EnergyC. SeaHarvest D. Sea Exploring Technology47. According to the author, technology for exploring the sea is important because______.A.m an cannot travel farther into spaceB.resources on land are running shortC.i t’s a lot of fun diving into the seaD. ancientpeople used to explore the sea48. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.man hasn’t completely developed the riches of theseaB.technology for exploring the sea has been solvedC.planting rice in the sea will be made possible in ashort timeD.in the near future man can live on the ocean floor50. The word “exploit” in the last paragraph could best be replaced by________.A.evaluateB. developC. gatherD. scatterPassage ThreeYour passport is your official identification as an American citizen. In America, most people never consider obtaining a passport unless they are planning a trip out of the country. In Europe, where travel from one country to another is much more common, almost everyone carries a passport. A passport is the final proof of identity in almost every county in the world. In l979 almost l5 million Americans held passports. Most of these passports were obtained to travel outside the country because, except for a few Western nations, passports are required to enter every country. And if youtravel abroad, you must have a valid passport to reenter the country. Whereas a passport is issued by a country to its citizens, a visa is official permission to visit a country granted by the government of that country. For some years, many countries were dropping their visa requirements, but that trend has reversed. Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela now require visas from U.S. citizens. They may be obtained from the embassy of the country you wish to visit.Passport applications are available at passport agency offices in large cities like Boston, New York, or Chicago. In smaller cities, applications are available at post offices and at federal courts. To get your first passport, you mustsubmit the application in person, along with a birth certificate and two pictures.5l. The passage suggests that_________.A. most people don’t realize how important passports areB. passports aren’t important once you are in thecountry you’ve chosen to visitC. passports are simple to obtain through the mailD. passports are obtained at the embassy once youenter a country55. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. It was first used as a shade against the sun.Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century B.C.We know that the umbrella was also used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. (81)And there was a strange thing connected with its use; it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royal people or by those in high office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece . But it is believed that the first personsin Europe to use umbrellas as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the 16th century. According to some research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician, believes in the importance of exercise. (82)She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. In studies with seniors, research has shown that exercise helps older people as well. The exercise doesn't have to be very difficult. The main goal is just to increase the heart rate. And especially when learning new movements, such as yoga or tai chi, it appears that new memory paths open up in the brain. This can improve people's short-term memory.46. Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. (83)They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the same time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.Buring garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been buring garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Pairs, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city's garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by buring almost a half million barrels of oil.But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns easily , such as food scraps (碎屑) and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is normally costly. Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air.Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Buring garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.51. What two problems can man solve by burning problem?A. The shortage of energy and air pollutionB. The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage.C. Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuels.D. Air pollution and the shortage of the land to hold garbage.52. The people infected were reportedto have caught the disease from poultry, while the World Health Organization (WHO) said there is "no proof of human-to-human transmission(传播)" of bird flue.(85)The big fear is that the disease could combine with a human influenza virus to create a deadly new disease that will kill millions of people across the globe. Many Asian farmers live closely with their animals and sell live chickens in the market. This greatly increases the possibility of human beings infected with bird flu.A spokesman of the WHO said that Asian countries affected by bird flu should introduce a more healthy way of raising and selling chickens. One strength of human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful (有压力的) conditions. Social support makes up the exchanges of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co- workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionshipsupportive.(83)Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same timedistracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support-money aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.51. " The promises of health, wealth and wisdom to those who join the ranks of the early retires and risers must be particularly appealing to many people in our contemporary society. There is no doubt that one of the greatest concerns of modern man is his health. It is estimated that in the United States 200 billion dollars are spent on health care each year. The medical field has grown into such a big business that it employs 4. 8 million people and it appears that in many places, more staff is needed to meet the demands of the people whoare concerned about their physical well-being.Much more interest has been shown in preventive(预防的) medicine in recent years. (85) This is probably due in part to the increasing costs of medical treatment, but the writings of such people as Dr. Kenneth Cooper have also played an important role. In his book Aerobics,Dr. Cooper communicated his message of the benefits of exercise so effectively that many other authors have followed in his trail, and literally millions of readers have put on their sports shoes and taken to the highways and byways of America. A recent survey showed that overone million people are jogging. The last time I was in Honolulu, I wasamazedto see hundreds of people, young and old, running for their lives, and I discovered many of them had run in the Hawaiian Marathon.Exercise has also become a major part of conversation. At a dinner party recently, the president of a bank asked me, "You look like a runner; how far do you run each day?"A few days later when I appeared on a national television show, the host suddenly asked me if I was a regular runner. On both occasions the conversation turned to the subject of exercise and I found, as I have found wherever I have traveled recently, that this is a subject on many people's minds. Of course, there are still many people who are less enthusiastic about exercise. They appreciate the philosophy of Robert M. Hutchins who said, "Whenever the thought of exercise occurs to me, I lie down till it passes. "56.The underlined word "retires". in Para. 1 probably refers to.A. people who go to.bedB. people who live in quiet placesC. people who have a lot of free timeD. people who give up their work57. 专转本大学英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)(18分)Passage one(12分钟)Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel o the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During word war 2 the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (their range of flight, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials the word radar was coined.1. They cared less about philosophy and pure mathematics than did the Greeks. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry (三角学) , and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, aqueducts (渠道) , and public buildings. They knew about the smelting of ironore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shields, rather than for building construction. While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little theoretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their inventions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with which they were familiar. There are two reasons for the Romans neglect of philosophy and pure mathematics. First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and forming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped (妨碍) by the rigidity of their numerical system. (Try to multiply XI by LVII or to divide CXLIII by IX; it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.) The Romans did all of their arithmetic on an abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modern computing machine. Their number system discouraged the study of pure mathematics.6. Swimming, hiking, boating, fishing-the days were not long enough to contain all of activities. There never seemed to be enough time to go to church, which disturbed some friends and relations. Accused of neglecting this part of our education, my father instituted a summer school for my brother and me. However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected, and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise in my father’s 18-foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see quite clearly across the water in the distance.416. Each passage is followed by some questionsor unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D .You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:Passage OnePopulation tends to grow at an exponential( 指数的 )rate. This means that they progressively double. As an example of this type of growth rate take one penny and doubleevery day for one month. After the first week, you would have only 64 cent, but after thefourth week you would have over a million dollars. This helps explain why the population has come on“ all of a sudden ” took from he beginningof human 1ife to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. Thatrepents( 缓慢进行 ) a time span of at least two million years. Then it took from 1830 to 1930 for world population to reach 2 billion. The next billion was added by 1960 only thirtyyears and in 1975 world population reached 4 billion which is another billion people inonly fifteen years.World population is increasing at a rate of 9, 000per hour, 220,000 per day and 80 million per year. This is not only due to higher birth rate, but to lower death rate as well. The number ofbirths has not declined at the same rate as the number of deaths. Some countries such as Columbia, Thailand, Morocco, Costa Rica and the Philippines are doubling their population about every twenty-one years with a growth rate of percent ayear or more. The United States is doubling its population about very eighty-seven years, with a rate of percent per year. (81)Every time a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much of everything, including hospitals, schools, resources, food andmedicines to care for its people. It is easy to see that this is very difficult to achievefor the more rapidly growing countries. This passage chiefly discussesȀ⸀Ā⸀Ā⸀Ā⸀Ā⸀he growth of world population. B.one type of the exponential rate.the population problem of more rapidly growing countries.the possible ways of dealing with the rapid population growth.According to the passage what helps to explain why the population problem has comeon “all of a sudden ”A. The penny that doubles itself every day for one month.B. The time span of at 1east two million years in human history.C. An illustration of the exponent growth rate given by the author.D. The large amount of money you would luckily make after the fourth week.43.It took for the world to increase its population from 1 billion to 4 billion.A. 100 yearsB. 175 yearsC. 1975 yearsD. over two million yearsWhich of the following statements is NOT trueA. World population is increasing at a rate of 150 per minute. When a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much ofeverything including __.A. hospitals and medicinesB. schools and studentsC. food and manpower resourcesD. all of the aboveQuestions 46 to 50based on the following passage:Passage TwoWomen are on the whole more verbal than men. They are good at 1anguage and verbalreasoning. while men tend to be skilled at tasks demanding visual-spatial(视空)abilities.In fact, along with aggression these are the most commonly accepted difference between these sexes.Words are tools for communicating with other people especially information about people. They are mainly social tools. Visual and spatial abilities are good for imagining andmanipulating objects and for communicating information about them. Are these talentsprogrammed into the brain In some of the newest and most controversial research in neurophysiology( 神经生理学 ), it has been suggested that when it comes to the brain malesare specialists while women are generalists. But one knows that, if anything this means in terms of the abilities of the two sexes. Engineering is both Visual and spatial and it ’s true that there are relatively few women engineers. But women become just as skilled as men at shooting a rifle or driving a cartask that involve visual-spatial skills. They also do equally well at programming a computer, which is neither visual nor spatial. Women do, however, seem less likely to fall in lovewith the objects themselves. We all know men for whom machines seem to be extensions oftheir identity.(82)A woman is more likely to see her car, rifle or computer as a useful tool but not in itself fascinating.46. According to the passage, women are usually good at_____.A. body languageB. logical reasoningC. tasks demanding for the use of wordsD. both A and B47.The word "accepted ” in the last sentence of the first paragraph, roughly means_____.A. believedB. assumedC. receivedD. reconciled48. Because they have no visual-spatial skills.B. Because they are only good at 1anguage and verbal reasoning.C. Because they are less likely to see their charming or interesting aspects.D. Because they rarely use machines such as cars, rifles, computers, etc.Questions 51 to 55are based on the following passage:Passage ThreeThe US. government has recently helped people learn more about the dangers ofearthquakes by publishing a map. This map shows the chances of an earthquake in eachpart of the country.(83)The areas of the map where earthquakes are most likely tooccur are called earthquake “ belt ” . The government is, spending a great deal moneyand is working hard to help discover the answer to these two questions: l. Can we predict earthquake 2. Can we control earthquakesTo answer the first question, scientists are looking very closely at the most active fault( 断层 )systems in the country such as the San Andreas fault in California, a fault is break between two sections of the earth ’s surface. These breaks between sectionsare the place where earthquake occurs. Scientists look at the faults for changes thatmight show that an earthquake was about to occurs. But it will probably be many yearsbefore we can predict earthquakes accurately. And the control of earthquakes is evenfarther away.Nevertheless, there have been some interesting developments in the field ofcontrolling earthquakes. The most interesting development concerns the Rocky Mountain Arsenal earthquakes. Here water was put into a layer of rocks 4000 meters below surfaceof the ground. Shortly after this injection of water, there were a small number ofearthquakes. Scientists have decided that the water which was injected into rocks works like oil on each other. When the water “ oiled ” the fault, the fault became slipperyand the energy of an earthquake was released. Scientists are still experimenting atthe site of these earthquakes. They have realized that there is a connection betweeninjection of the water and the earthquake activity. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim isaccurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter ’ s triumph of killing his prey.To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving( 进化 ) as Cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting field. (84) Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed: They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attack. Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting the food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life wasput to a new use—— that of controlling and domesticating ( 驯养 ) their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival.(85)The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets.Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all theoriginal hunting sequences( 后果 ), but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoidstarvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that was no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten, but there were other purposes, much simpler of obtaining a meaty meal. What is the main idea of the passageHunting is very important in human civilization.Sporting activities satisfy the desire of modern society. It ’s hunting that provides human beings with food. The importance of sporting activities in modern society.57. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:The making of glass is a very old industry—at least 4,500 years old. Glass has many extraordinary qualities and it is frequently being used in new ways. One of the most interesting new uses for glass is in telephone communication. (81)Scientists have developed glass fibres(纤维)as thin as human hair which are designed to carry light signals. When the light reaches the other end, it is first changed into electrical signals, which are in turn converted into sound messages.Called lightwave(光波)communication, the new system was used successfully in an experiment in Chicago in 1977. During the experiment, two glass fibres were able to carry 672 conversations at the same time. The lightwave cable containing 144 glass fibres, has the capacity to carry 50,000 conversations at the same time. The lightwave communication system has two important advantages. First the glass fibre cables are smaller and weigh less than copper (铜) cables. Second, they cost less.Perhaps it can be said that telephone communication has entered the age of light!41. In the words of a poet and philosopher(哲学家),“As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives”A culture and its languages are as inseparable as brain and body;while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In leaning a foreign language, the best beginning is with the non-verbal (非语言)linguistic(语言学的)elements of the language, its gestures, its body language. (83)Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English maxim (格言)has it, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes.46. The best title for this passage is_______.A. Organs of Culture B.Brain and BodyC. Seeing Eye-to-EyeD. Non-Verbal Linguistic Elements47.According to this passage, the best way to learn a foreign language i_______.A. to read the works of poets and philosophersB. to find a native speaker and look directly into his eyesC. to begin by learning its body languageD. to visit a country where English is spoken48.According to this passage, gestures are_______.A. non-verbal as well as non-linguistic B.verbal and linguisticC. non-verbal but nevertheless 1inguistic D.verbal but nevertheless non-linguistic49. “As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives” means _______.A. “if one learns many foreign 1anguages,one will have a better understanding of hisown 1anguage.”B. “Life is richer and more inter esting if one knows several languages.”C. “No matter how many languages one knows, one can never know more than one's ownculture.”D. “If a person speaks only one language,he will live a very happy life.”50. One of the following which is different with the others is_______.A. signsB. gesturesC. idiomsD. body languageQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book 1over or merely there to buy a book as a present. Whatever the person you can soon become totally aware of yoursurroundings. You soon become engrossed in some books, and usually it is only much 1ater that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—Without buying a book of course.(84)This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday 1ife is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the common greeting:“Can l help you, sir?”You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop 1ooking for a book on ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy ofthe 1atest bestselling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing(拓印) something which had only vaguely(含糊地)interested you up until then. This volume on the subject, however, happens to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proves so interesting that you just have to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section. Booksellers must be both long-suffering and indulgent(宽容的).51. You may be unaware of the time passing by in a bookshop because_______.A. you want to escape the reality of everyday lifeB. you have to finish browsing one of the booksC. you don’t want to waste your moneyD. you have to make sure you don’t buy a dull book as a present52. In a good bookshop_______.A. the shop assistant greets you in a friendly wayB. you feel obliged to buy one of the booksC. your heart is contentedD. no shop assistant will approach you unless his service is called53. It is very unwise to enter a bookshop and buy_______.A. a best-selling hovel on brass-rubbingB. a book on ancient coinsC. a book on the subject that vaguely interests youD. a book well illustrated and expensive54. According to the writer, the best way to escape the realities of routine life is_______.A. to have a long chat with assistant in a bookshopB. to stay in a bookshop, being absorbed in reading books of various kindsC. to buy a best-selling novel to readD. to wander about in the streets55. The best title of this selection would be_______.A. On buying booksB. Bookshops and AssistantsC. Booklovers and BookshopsD. How to Escape the Realities of Everyday Life in a BookshopQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:It is difficult to imagine what 1ife would be 1ike without memory. The meanings ofthousands of everyday perceptions, the bases for the decisions we make and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.Memory can he defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It includes not only “remembering” things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is invo1ved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also invo1ved when a six-year-old child 1earns to swing a baseball bat.(85)Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant-access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 “words”—ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings.A large part of a person’s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.56. According to the passage, memory is considered to be________.A. the basis for decision making and problem solvingB. an ability to store experiences for future useC. an intelligence typically possessed by human beingsD. the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words57. The comparison made between the memory capacity of a 1arge computer and that of ahuman being shows that_______.A. the computer’s memory has a 1ittle bigger capacity than a teenager’sB. the computer’s memory capacity is much smaller than all adult human being’sC. the computer’s memory capacity is much smaller even than a teenager’sD. both A and B58. The who1e passage implies that_______.A. only human beings have problem-solving intelligenceB. a person’s memory is different from a computer’s in every respectC. animals are able to so1ve only very simple problemsD. animals solve problems by instinct rather than intelligence59. The phrase “in terms of” in the last sentence can best be replaced by_______.A. “in connection with”B. “expressed by”C. “consisting”D. “by means of”60. The topic of the passage is_______.A. That the fruits of the earthshould all be laid out on tidy shelves in this provincial corner of Britain would have been unthinkable a few years ago, yet now it is taken for granted.Once strange and exotic fruits that only the rich could afford, if not now part of everyones diet, are certainly part of our everydayshopping experience. So much so that instead of focusing on the novel, I am drawn to the commonplace. Here, among the humble vegetables, something strange and disturbing is going on.V. Reading Comprehension (38 points)Clearly if we are to participle in the society in which we live we must communicate with other people. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members ofsociety.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of has become of one of the dominating factors ofcontemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programme that is being channeled into millions of homes.Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is apart, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1. In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ offace-to-face contact insocial settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. It is implied in the passage that_______A local news used to be the only source of informationB local news still takes a significant placeC national news is becoming more popularD international news is the fastest transmitted news3. which of the following statement is INCORRECT?A To possess information used to be a privilegeB Public libraries have replaced private librariesC Communication means more than transmissionD Information influences ways of life and thinking4.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is________.A indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaI am one of the many city people who are always saying that giventhe choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt andnoise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself thatit werent for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But howrealistic is the dream?Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the populationlive in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervouscooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks dont even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the existing and important events that take place in cities. Theres little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, andfor anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves forthe country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peaceand quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesnt come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the quiet life by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring morning to the locals as they pass by? Im keen on the idea, but you see theres my cat, T oby, Im not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass, I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.5. And now a big research study confirms it.Professor Barry Wellman's term is "networked individualism". It's not the easiest concept to grasp. In fact, the words seem to contradict each other. How can we be individualistic and networked at the same time? You need other people for network. Here's what he means. Until the Internet and e-mail came along, our social network involved flesh-and-blood relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person, in reallife. But the latest study confirms that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced a great deal of social activities and person-to-person interaction. Some people worry that the Internet is turning us into isolated people who shut out other people in favor of a false world on computer screens. To the contrary, the study discovered that the Internet connects us with more real people than expected—helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told the researcher that the Internet plays an important or crucial role in helping them deal with major life decisions. So we networked individuals are pretty tricky: we're keeping more to ourselves, while at the same time reaching out to more people, all with just the click of a computer mouse!44. The term "networked individualism" is used to refer to______.A. the way that modem people communicate on the InternetB. a social activity popular with North AmericansC. the contradiction within network communicationD. a newly invented Internet software45. With the wide use of Internet, some people fear that______.A. people will become isolatedB. interpersonal relation will disappearC. people will be controlled by networkD. there will be too many social activities46. According to the latest research, electronic interaction through computer is______.A. highly rewardingB. a waste of timeC. only informativeD. an escape from social life47. Why does the writer say networked individuals are tricky?A. Because they sometimes play tricks on people.B. Because they refuse person-to-person communication.C. Because they can stay alone while remaining sociable.D. Because they feel puzzled when communicating with each other.Passage Four"I love you, Bob." "I love you, too, Nancy." Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneLearnin g how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I’d ask whether anyone in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up.“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.“Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience… not to be inhibited(拘谨;抑制)… not to be nervous…”Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowdays, you don’t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to reach out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your longstanding nervous inhibitions. It is the same in writing. (81)The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what you wrote. The main task of public speech course is to .A. teach spoken language expressionsB. teach how to use gestures to assist speechC. help the learners overcome nervousnessD. teach how to control the volume of the speaker’s voice42. Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that a writer should .A. overcome his or her nervousness in the first placeB. watch his or her grammar and vocabularyC. collect a lot of dats before writingD. take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing43. In the author’s opinion, .A. writing needs more experience and skill than public speakingB. both writing and public speaking require effortC. writing is imaginativeD. public speaking is not so natural as writing44. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Not many students feel the need to learn public speaking.B. Training is necessary before you can speak with a script.C. In public speaking ,the audience are more nervous than the speaker.D. Writing is just like making a public speech on paper.45. This selection is mainly about learning how to .A. make a public speechB. talk on paperC. behave properly in public speechD. express strong emotions on paperPassage TwoIn the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. (82)Resources on land are beginning to grow less. The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man’s needs. The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology are impressive. Oil and gas explorations have existed for nearly thirty years. Valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, nickel and copper exist on the ocean floor, ready to be mined.Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by oriental peoples.Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy such as hydro electric power.Technology is enabling man to explore ever deeper under the sea. The new undersea teachnology is providing divers with diving suits and undersea chambers that are kept at sea level pressure. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. By the year 2000, experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.46. What is the best title for the passage?A. Needs of ManB. Sources of EnergyC. Sea HarvestD. Sea Exploring Technology47. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. man hasn’t completely cultivated the riches of the seaB. technology for exploring the sea has been foundC. planting rice in the sea will be made possible in a short timeD. in the near future man can live on the ocean floor50. The word “exploit” in the last paragraph could best be replaced by .A. evaluateB. developC. gatherD. scatterPassage ThreeYour passport is your official identification as an American citizen. In America, most people never consider obtaining a passport unless they are planning a trip out of the country. In Europe, where travel from one country to another is much more common, almost everyone carries a passport. A passport is final proof of identity in almost every country in the world. In 1979, almost 15 million Americans held passports. Most of these passports were obtained to travel outside the country because, except for a few western nations, passports are required to enter every country. And if you travel abroad, you must have a valid passport to reenter the country. When traveling abroad, you will need a passport for identification when exchanging dollars for francs or marks or other foreign currency. You may also need your passport to use a credit card, buy an airplane ticket, and check into a hotel or casino. As a passport is an official U.S. document, it is valuable as identification in any emergency overseas, such as floods, fires, or war.Don’t confuse passports and visas. (83) Whereas a passport is issued by a country to its citizens, a visa is official permission to visit a country granted by the government of that country. To get your first passport, you must submit the application in person, along with a birth certificate and two pictures.51. Passports are beneficial for .A. exchanging currencyB. using a credit cardC. checking into hotelsD. all of the above53. As used in this passage, the word “valid”(Para. 2) means .A. foreignB. legalC. monetaryD. illegalPassage FourI hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching(抓住) at one another’s hands for reassurance. They claim that they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They are off in new directions in music, but somehow they all end up huddled(拥挤) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusand such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(茧) into a larger cocoon.(84)It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days, every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have c ome to award high marks for the popularity of their children. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity w ill come with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.56.
