Criminal law
· The State is the prosecutor
· The object is to prove guilt

Criminal law
· A crime is an offence against the state. The state prosecutes a person who is accused of a crime.
· The object is to prove guilt.
· The object of criminal law is to regulate society by the threat of punishment. · Finally, the criminal court may sentence the defendant and fine him or impose a period of imprisonment.
Civil law
· An action is brought by one person (the claimant) against another (the defendant) · The object is to show liability
· Compensation: damages or some other remedy
· Both parties may choose to settle the dispute out of court
