Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead-in

Show a piece of music of Chankiang River/the Yangtze River and some pictures of it and tell Ss the purpose of the class. (T: How much do you know about the Yangtze River? The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world, flowing 6,300 kilometers from western China into the East China Sea. It runs across nine provinces and is China’s most important freshwater river and a great mother river along with Yellow River. And let’s look at the beautiful senery of the Yangtze River and there are many kinds of animais and fish in the river. As we know, the topic of this unit is “The Environment〞, it’s very important to protect the environment and so as to the Yangtze River. This class we are going to study a report on what China is doing to protect the Yangtze River before you move to writing your report like the passge .)

Step 2 Word reading

Get Ss to read the new words in the reading passage on Pages71-72 after the teacher.

Step3 Fast-reading

Make Ss listen to the record of the reading passage and divide Ss into groups and ask them to read their assigned paragraph and report the main idea of each one to the class.(Suggested answers :e.g.

Step4 Careful-reading

Ask Ss to discuss the following questions with the background light music concerned with the environment:

1.Why have the environmental problems of the Yangtze River raised concern both nationally and internationally?

2.What does the Green River organization do?

3.What problems do the two government projects focus on?

4.What did farmers have to do under the water and soil preservation project?

5.What does the second project concern?

Step5 Reading exercise

Ask Ss to do a close test.

Step6 Homework

Have Ss try to write a report about protecting the environment like the reading passage they’ve learnt today.
