Passage two
In 1577 Francis Drake won Queen Elizabeth I's permission to set out for the Pacific Ocean. No English ship had ever ventured into the Pacific. Drake sailed through the Strait of Magellan and into the body of water that bears
his name --- the Drake Passage. He sailed north and fell upon and robbed the Spanish settlements in Chile and Peru. Then, when his ship the Golden Hind could hold no more gold and silver, Drake headed farther north. He sailed about as far as Vancouver Island, but failed to find a passage to the Atlantic Ocean. Near the present city of San Francisco he stopped to repair his ship and left a metal plaque(匾)claiming the land for Queen Elizabeth.
But how was Drake to get back to England? There was no sea passage through the land. Nor could he return by the same route. The Spaniards would surely be waiting for him. One choice remained --- to cross the vast Pacific Ocean and sail around the world. Only the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan had done this before. After stopping at the Spice Islands, Drake arrived back in England in 1580. The voyage had taken 3 years. Queen Elizabeth knighted Drake. He was elected mayor of Plymouth and a member of Parliament.

Passage three
A language is a signaling system which operates with symbolic vocal sounds, and which is used by a group of people for the purpose of communication. It is language, more than anything else, that distinguishes man from the rest of the animal world. Other animals, it is true, communicate with each other by means of cries: for example, many birds utter warning calls at the approach of danger: apes utter different cries, such as expressions of anger, fear and pleasure. But these various means of communication differ in important ways from human language. For instance, animals' cries are not articulate. This means, basically, that they lack structure. They lack, for example, the kind of structure given by the contrast between vowels and consonants. They also lack the kind of structure that enables us to divide a human utterance into words.

Passage four
Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish. The lake water is polluted. It is in a color of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.
How did this happen? First, we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog, so the rainwater was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals(化学品) in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects. There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines or shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rainwater picks up all the chemicals from homes and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas from boats get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people's lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.
