英语试卷
阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
A little girl lived in a small, simple house on a hill. She often played in the small garden next to the house. There she could see a wonderful house with golden windows high on the hill across the valley. She often dreamed of growing up in it instead of an ordinary house like hers.
When she grew older and learned how to ride a bike, she asked her mother if she could go for a bike ride outside the gate and down the lane. Her mother allowed her to go, but insisted that she should keep close to the house and do not wander too far. The day was beautiful and the little girl knew exactly where she was heading! Down the lane and across the valley, she rode her bike until she got to the gate of the golden house on the other hill.
As she stopped her bike, she focused on the path that led to the house and then on the house itself. She couldn’t believe her eyes as she realized all the windows were plain and rather dirty.
She didn’t go any further and turned back, heartbroken as she got on her bike. However, as she glanced up she saw a sight that amazed her. There across the way on her side of the valley was a little house and its windows glistened(闪闪发光) as the sun shone on her little home.
She realized that she had been living in her golden house with love and care. Everything she dreamed was right there in front of her nose!

It was 2007 and John Maloof was working on a book about Chicago’s neighborhoods. He was hoping to find a few pictures from the 1960s that he could use in the book. What he ended up finding was far more interesting.
After purchasing boxes full of negatives (底片) from a local auction (拍卖) house, Maloof began developing some of the images. When he finished, he was stunned. There were tons of them — more than 30,000 pictures in these boxes. Whoever had taken these pictures was surely one of the most talented American photographers of the last hundred years.
The images discovered by Maloof were taken by a woman named Vivian Maier. For nearly 40 years, Maier worked as a babysitter for wealthy families in Chicago and New York. During
her trips to other cities around the United States, Maier took nearly 150,000 photos of the people and architecture that surrounded her.
Maloof then collected 100 of the best photos and posted them online. People loved them. Major newspapers called to run stories about Maier’s work and wanted to know how Maloof discovered the images. Galleries began to exhibit her work throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The uncovering of Vivian Maier’s images has been referred to as the greatest photographic discovery of the 21st century in America.
We’ll never know the reasons why Vivian Maier decided to hide her works away in boxes, but her story is a wonderful reminder that we all carry some brilliance inside of us. How easily could Maier’s works have been forgotten? How many other brilliant artists, scientists and thinkers have their works
hidden in boxes or tucked away in attics (阁楼)?
We have responsibility to share our works with the world and to contribute our talents to this little corner of the universe. Choose to share your brilliance with the world.

D. Everyone should learn to share his brilliance with others.

In an exam-driven culture, a good student means one who achieves high scores. In such a system, education is just a passive reproduction of the ideas others have presented. Life skills such as self-confidence, passion for science and love for knowledge are all underestimated (低估).
Finland, a current leader of educational reform in the world, has carried out a no-national-exams policy and succeeded in creating a generation of inspired and outstanding students. At the same time it is committed to quality teaching; to teach in Finland, one needs to have a master’s degree. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) measures average scores for reading, mathematics and science literacy of students in the world. Finnish students have continued to place close to the top of all the subjects on the PISA list.
Pasi Sahlberg, of Finland’s Education Department, said, “Thirty years ago, Finland’s education system was a mess. Now, we manage to restart the whole system. We prepare children to learn how to learn, not how to take a test.” Dr. Sahlberg said Finnish children don’t start school until they are seven years old because the Finnish authorities don’t want to go against children’s right to be children. “The first six years of education are not about academic success,” he said. “We don’t measure children at all. It’s about being ready to learn and finding their passion.” According to the survey by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the smallest differences in the world between the strongest and weakest students are found in Finland.
While the heavy standardized testing is a norm in many countries, the Finnish authorities think that such tests cost too much to manage and cause stress. The Finnish answer to such testing was to trust teachers and to have only a small sample of students sit for exams to keep track of school performance.
However, the results of these tests are not made public.

B. it is important to develop children’s passion
C. it is children’s right to enjoy a good education system
D. Finland had the poorest education system 30 years ago
34. If a student takes an exam in Finland, .
A. he will be given extra help from his teachers
B. he will be regarded as one of the weakest students
C. he can’t see his scores posted for public attention
D. he will gain experience as to taking examinations
