随着我国改革开放的深入发展，政治，经济，科技和社会生活各方面发生了急剧变化，一批又一批的新词应运而生，其成长之速度令人应接不暇，汉英新词的翻译日益受到人们的关注，成为翻译实践的一个新的研究点，也取得了不菲的成绩。 但是翻译是一项非常严肃的工作，新词翻译也是一个不断完善的过程，在不同的新词翻译资料不同程度地存在某些问题，即使是国内一些比较权威的网站，书籍也是如此。就这些问题，笔者简单谈谈个人的看法。 １、理解是汉英新词翻译中的前提 作为翻译实践的一种，汉英新词翻译无疑具有翻译的一些共性和特点，但也有其个性，比如时效性，创造性等。这就使得新词翻译具有某些难度，因此作好新词翻译不是一件容易的事情。众所周知，翻译始于理解，但是俗话说，隔行如隔山，由于新词往往涉及一些新的事物，要翻译那些不熟悉的词汇特别是专业术语，在理解上往往不是那么容易。比如笔者看到有书把“三陪”译作 “ women who provide illegal sexual services, especially prostitutes ”,“三陪”不一定就是指性服务，此处对“三陪”的理解与“妓女”无异，而且使用illegal 一词也有问题，因为性服务没有合法不合法之分，都是非法的，其实类似“三陪”这 浅谈汉英新词翻译 宋孝廷 刘红 夏娟 湖南湘南学院大学英语教学部 ４２３００ 样的服务，西方国家早已有之，称之为“escort service ”。“三通一平”是建筑学上的一个术语，意思是建筑项目中的通水，通电，通路和地面找平面，按意思应该翻译为access to water, power, road and leveled ground 之类的句子。但是我们却发现有人这样翻译：one level three ground ，将“三通一平”简单机械地翻译成“三个通过和一个平面”，这是典型的因为不理解原文而造成的中式英文，实在是令人哭笑不得。还有，我国这几年有个经济术语“积极的财政政策”，如果就字面的翻译为“active financial policy ”似乎没有什么问题，但仔细研究的话就会发现，“积极的”这个语境里应该具有某种强调的意思，语气稍重一些。要表达这个强调的语气英语中有一个词“proactive ”,即在“active ”前面加上一个前缀“pro ”.“pro ”这个前缀在英语中的意思是“i n f a v o r o f ”, 因此“proactive ”比active ”更具强调意义。再如，汉语里有个“皮包公司”的新名词，指的是没有固定资产，经营地点及工作人员，只提着皮包从事经济活动的人或组织。关于这个词的翻译有很多种，有的译为“paper company 有名无实的公司”, 有的译为“bubble company 为诱骗钱财而虚设的公司”,都是可以接受的，但若译为“shell company 空壳公司或外壳公司”则有失偏颇了，因为“shell company ”是指不真正从事实际经济活动的公司，与原词的意思相差甚远。因此正确的理解原文是翻译的第一步，切忌望文生义，断章取义。２、汉英新词翻译中的表达问题 在汉英新词翻译过程中，正确得理解 原文乃是第一步，不过就算是理解了原文 的意思，要正确，地道地用英语表达出来也 并非易事。汉英翻译的新词大都具有浓厚 的地方“特色”，尤其是某些外来词，如果 译者对其意思没有弄清楚，其结果就会是 不伦不类，顾此失彼。如“信息高速公路”一词最初是美国前副总统艾伯特?戈尔 1978年提出来的，其原文是information superhighway, 因此把这个地道的外来词 翻译成英文时应该还其“本色”，译者若 不明其来源而将其译为i n f o r m a t i o n expressway ，意思没错，但外国读者看来难免有不伦不类之嫌。其次，文化层面也是一个极容易被忽视的一个问题，举个非常明显的例子，汉语里有一个非常有“中国特色”的成语“望子成龙”，很多人就翻译成“t o hope that one ’s son will become a dragon ”之类，英语读者看到后做何感想？有趣的是笔者在教学中居然发现有学生把自己的英文名也取为“dr ag on ”,也难怪外教当时听了就一脸茫然，一个劲地摇头，以上笑话皆因翻译时没有文化概念之故，须知“dragon ”在英语中的意思乃是“会喷火的怪物”。再者，表达要符合习惯，否则即使是语法，措辞正确，也会有中式英语之嫌。这个方面的问题也不少，比如，将“网吧 c y b e r c a f e ”译为“n e t b a r ,internet bar ”就是此类。又如，把“高新技术new and high technology ” 译作high and new technology ，把“复合材料 composite material ”译作compound material 或complex material 也是此类问题所在。这样的词序或搭配都不符合英文行文的要求。还有把“赢得市场” 译作gain a larger share of the market 也有违英文行文习惯，英文中的“市场份额”人们更习惯于说成是market share, 而“赢得”，“获得”通常用 increase, capture,gain 来表示。又如，我国的戏剧中有一种叫做川剧，有的书将其译为folk opera of Sichuan Province 《现代汉语词典（汉 英双语）》不正确。因为folk 意为“民间的”，不是“地方性的”，建议可以译为“one of the local forms of opera in Sichuan Province ”.笔者最近在中国日报的网站上(htt p://lan https://www.360docs.net/doc/a24739988.html,/chineseterm.shtml?ty=z)也看到把“在职研究生”和“在职博士生”分别译做 “on-job postgraduate ”和“on-job doctorate ” ,可知在英语中表达“在职”这个意思直接就有一个词“on-the-job ”,将其直接借用过
