作者:Charles Dickens is one of the greatest critical realist writers of the Victorian Age. His works are intended to expose and criticize all the poverty, injustice, hypocrisy and corruptness of the 19th-century England, particularly London. All his works are characterized by a mingling of humor and pathos.

作品:In this novel, Dickens describes one boy growing up in a world which is by turns magical, fearful and grimly realistic. In a book which is part autobiographical, the novelist transmutes his life-experience into a series of comic and sentimental adventures.

Beginning with Pickwick Papers in 1836, Dickens wrote numerous novels, each uniquely filled with believable personalities and vivid physical descriptions. Dickens's friend and biographer, John Forster, said that Dickens made "characters real existences, not by describing them but by letting them describe themselves."

The author worked closely with his illustrators(n. 插图画家;说明者;图解者)supplying them with an overall summary of the work at the outset and thus ensuring that his vision of his characters and settings were exactly how he envisioned(vt.想象,预想)them to be. This close working relationship with his illustrators is important to readers of Dickens today. Film makers still use the illustrations as a basis for characterization, costume, and set design in the dramatization of Dickens's works.

《文学大师的传奇人生——狄更斯》

The Pickwick Papers is the first novel by Charles Dickens. The Pickwick Papers is Dickens‟ first novel and widely regarded as one of the major classics of comic writing in English. Originally published in monthly installments, it quickly became a huge popular success with sales reaching 40,000 by the final number. In the century and a half since its first appearance, the characters of Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller and the whole Pickwickian crew have entered the consciousness of all who love English literature in general, and the works of Dickens in particular.

Written for publication as a serial(连载), The Pickwick Papers is a sequence of loosely-related adventures. The novel's main character, Mr. Samuel Pickwick,a Esquire(先生,绅士), is a kind and wealthy old gentleman, and the founder and perpetual(永久的,无期限的)president of the Pickwick Club. To extend his researches into the quaint and curious phenomena of life, he suggests that he and three other "Pickwickians" (Mr Nathaniel Winkle, Mr Augustus Snodgrass, and Mr Tracy Tupman) should make journeys to remote places from London and report on their findings to the members of the club. Their travels throughout the English countryside

by coach provide the chief theme of the novel. A distinctive and valuable feature of the work is the generally accurate descriptions of the old coaching inns of England.

The Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens, published by Richard Bentley in 1838. Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of the society. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm(规范)at the time for pauper(贫民的)children, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official(教区议会官员).

The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy(坏事) from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor – Mr. Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The
