Step I Revision

Check the homework.

Ask some students to sum up the different ways to emphasize a statement and give some examples.

Step II Before you start

Ask students to do the quiz to see how assertive they are. Students will be given three minutes to answer the questionnaire individually.

After students test their assertiveness, students are given several minutes to learn the phrasal verbs in the questionnaire.

T: There are many phrasal verbs in the questionnaire. Please match the verbs in Ex1 on Page 22 with the underlined phrasal verbs. Two minutes later, we will check the answers together.

Step III Listening Strategies: Identifying moods

The listening strategies will help students build listening skills and get thoroughly prepared. Before listening, ask students to learn Listening Strategies: Identifying moods

Listen for expressions that are positive or negative.

Pay attenti on to intonation to help you identify people’s moods.

Be careful with sarcasm. Sometimes people say something positive but with a falling intonation so that it means the opposite.

Step IV Listening

Deal with Ex3.

Before playing the recording, Teacher asks students to look through the statements first. Listen again if necessary. Then check the answers with the whole class.

T: As we know, most Chinese families have only one child. Most of you don’t have the chance to have conflict with brothers or sisters. It is true a brother or sister sometimes causes you trouble. But he or she will also bring you happiness. Here is the argument between a brother and sister, Pete and Lucy. Use the Strategies to decide if these statements are true or false.

Deal with Ex4.

Listen again .Use the Strategies to classify the expressions in the Function File.

While listening, ask students to pay more attention to the intonation of the given sentences.

Step V Pronunciation

Deal with Ex5.

Listen to eight sentences. Identify the mood: angry, annoyed, excited, patient, sarcastic, satisfied, upset.

While listening, ask students to pay more attention to the intonation of the sentences.

Deal with Ex6.

Ask students to work in pairs and act out situation 3 from the questionnaire in Exercise 1. Remind students to use the expressions from the Function File. Examples:

A: Hey, I’m going to a party. Can I borrow your new sneakers?

B: No, Why should I lend you?

...

A: Hey, I’m going to a party. Can I borrow your new sneakers?

B: No, you are always going off with my things and never giving them back. ...

A: Hey, I’m going to a party. Can I borrow your new sneakers?

B: No, why do you always have to borrow my things?
