I. Understanding Short Conversations
W: Why should I care about animal species dying out?
M: Animals depend on each other. And so the death of one leads to the death of others. Someday, people will die because we fail to protect other animals.
Q: Why should people protect other animals?
W: I know baseball is an important American symbol and tradition, but it’s so boring!
M: A lot of Americans think the same thing! Actually, American football is much more popular. In the future, basketball may be too. Q: What can we infer from the conversation?
W:Let’s see if everyone’s present for class. Hmm…we’re missing someone. Who’s missing from you all?
M: It’s that short guy. I don’t know his name—you know, the quiet one. He said he was too sick to listen to a lecture. But really, he’s just homesick.
Q: Where is this conversation taking place?
M: Science is making so much possible. How do you think it should be checked?
W: Some say responsibility lies with the public, politicians, or agencies. Really, scientists should be left alone to control themselves.
Q: Who should control scientific progress?
W: You don’t look very excited. Aren’t you up for the Nobel Prize this
year?
M: Yeah, but so are a lot of people. And I don’t really expect to win it. Maybe next year though.
Q: What can we learn about the man?
W: What bothers you most about the president we elected?
M: I’m not sure there’s anything that makes me happy about him. But the worst is that he represents us as a symbol among other companies. Q: What can be inferred from the conversation?
W: I was able to lose a lot of weight by eating better, but I’m still weak and soft.
M: You look all right to me. But you could probably benefit from lifting the weights in the gym. Or better, take up swimming.
Q: According to the man, what is the best thing for the woman to do?
M: Jack is very ill and has to go to hospital. Let me go and get a taxi. You go back to Jack at once.
W: Good. I wonder if you could also call his family.
Q: What does the woman suggest?
W: I think I’d like to be a dog. If you could be any kind of animal, other than a person, what would you be?
M: Ooh, that’s tough. A monkey? No! I think I’d like to be a bird so I could fly high up in the sky and look at people down below.
Q: What kind of animal would the man want to be?
W: For decades, we’ve been promised flying cars. Anymore, I have no faith in science.
M: There’ve been so many other advancements. You shouldn’t lose
