1. Introduction
1.1About David Herbert Lawrence
DH Lawrence is one of the most original and controversial English writers of the 20th century. During his life-long literary career, he had written more than ten novels and several short stories. He was best known as a novelist. Besides being a great novelist, he is also a poet, an essayist, a travel-writer, and literary correspondent. His Sons and Lovers is considered as one of the most popular novel. Lawrence took human relationship, especially that of men and women, to build his novel. His first novel was Sons and Lovers. His other famous works are the Rainbow, Women in Love, The Lost Girl, Lady Chatterley's Lover and so on.
1.2 About Sons and Lovers
Sons and Lovers is one of Lawrence's most popular novels. It tells the story of a miner's family-the Morel family. Mrs. Morel, mother of the sons, is the major character in this novel. She is a woman of high education, middle-class lady who is disillusioned with her husband, a coarse and hard-drinking miner. Her husband, Mr. Morel comes from the lower-class, who can hardly read and write but dance well. After they have been married for several years, Mr. Morel works very hard for family, but he ignores his wife. He doesn’t know she begins to change her manner to him. She is disappointed by his rough manners, his drinking, and his clownery. And the difficult life make the marriage turned into a battlefield. And the love she has withdrawn from Morel is being redirected toward the first of her children. Such is the world into which Paul Morel is born. And the sons all love their mother and are jealous of the father.
She has had a passion for her husband, but her husband can’t give what she wanted. So her children are born of passion, and have heaps of vitality. But as her sons are grow up she selects them as lovers, first the eldest, then the second. But when the sons come to manhood, they can’t love, because their mother is the strongest power in their lives, and holds them. Then, this possession killed her first son, William. The next son gets a woman who fights for his soul, fights his mother. Of cause, the mother is powerful because of the ties of blood. Finally, the son decides to leave his soul in his mother’ hands, like his brother go for passion. He gets passion. But, when his mother begins to die, the son casts off his mistress, attends to his mother dying. He is left in the end naked of everything, with the drift towards death.
The result are obvious, the end of the relationship in Morel’ family is a tragedy. In this thesis will analyze the cause of tragedy—possession, it is the desire of the holding or having something as one’s own or under one’s control. There are many strong possessions in this novel and it brings much destruction to relationship.
