A Good Paragraph
A Good Paragraph has...
• A clear Topic Sentence • Unity • Coherence
Location of Topic Sentence
• Usually first sentence • Sometimes last sentence or somewhere in the paragraph • Read “Synonyms” on pg 5 and “Medical Miracles to Come” on pg 6
Write
• Write topic sentences for Para 1-3 on pgs 10-11. • Many English words have their origin in other languages. • The University Education System in Europe and North America are not the same. • Homes around the world are made of very different materials.
Coherence
• Coherence means the sentences “hold together” • Logical and smooth flow from one sentence to the next • On pg 22, see difference between paragraph with coherence and without coherence
How to get Coherence
• • • • Repeat key nouns Use consistent pronouns Use transitional signals Arrange ideas in logical order
Revise
• Revise your essay so each paragraph has unity (no sentence off topic) • Revise your essay to achieve coherence (repeat key nouns, use transitional signals)
Revise
• Read your classmates’ essays and find if they have good topic sentences. • Suggest how they can change their topic sentences.
Unity
• What is paragraph unity? • Everything in the paragraph is about one main idea (topic sentence). • Must be directly related • Read paragraphs 1-3 on pg 19 • On
• Not too general
Marriage is an important event in a person’s life.
• Not too specific
The average age for Americans to marry in the year 2000 was 25 for a woman and 27 for a man.
Homework
• Write a good copy of your outline • Write the final copy of your essay • Your outline and your essay should match • Hand in both together next week
• Must be a complete sentence with subject, verb and object.
And now about marriage.

• On pg.6-7, find the Best Topic Sentence and what is wrong with the other ones • On pg. 7-8, locate the Topic Sentence • How did you find the Topic Sentence? • Order of other sentences?
