1.Crop production has steadily increased over time and it has been suggested that 50% of the progress is attributable to advances in crop management and breeding. For example, the three major crops in the US, maize, wheat, and soybean, show positive linear increases in average yield from 1930 to 2012. However, changes in climatic patterns, land, and water availability now provide additional challenges for plant breeders and geneticists to ensure yield stability in varying environments. To meet the projected increase of global demand for food, feed, and fiber, the linear progress will need to be increased. To increase the rate of genetic improvement, the efficiency, reliability, and speed of genetic improvement must be increased.

2.In cotton and other crop species quantitative traits are governed by a multitude of loci each of which contributes to a particular phenotype in varying degrees. These loci are called quantitative trait loci (QTL) and are evaluated for their positions on the chromosomes, and the phenotypic variance that they contribute to a particular trait. Studies in cotton have focused on QTL which are involved in fiber strength, length, uniformity, micronaire, color, disease resistance, fruiting nodes, boll weight and number, yield, seed oil and protein content, leaf morphology, and various seed related traits. Numerous independent studies have reported QTL pertaining to all of these traits using independent or updated linkage maps from different or the same segregating populations.

3.In many plant species there is a negative correlation between the number of seeds produced and the size of those seeds. Genetic and physiological understanding of this trade-off is fundamental to increasing yield gains in crops for which the seed are the harvested part. Among these crops, wheat, rice and maize provide the staple foods of the world. For wheat, recent years have seen the rate of increase in production slow down, and the need for a new effort in the genetic improvement of this crop has been highlighted. Up to now, genetic gains in grain yield potential of wheat have mainly been achieved by increasing grain number per unit area of land. Breeders have selected varieties in which the extent of the grain weight trade-off is minimized.
