A brief analysis of Anna’s tragedy from Anna Karennia摘要鲁迅说:“悲剧就是把有价值的东西毁灭给人看。

Anna karennina is regarded as the most successful tragic masterpiece of Leo Tolstoy. In this thesis, the author analyzes some reasons, which cause the tragic masterpiece of Anna from two main aspects: the social milieu and personal attribute. The social milieu is the imposed out-side reason. Personal attribute is the internal reasons. Karenin, Count V onsky and Anna herself become the personal reason of Anna‟s tragedy. I will analyze them in the thesis individually.Chapte rⅠA Brief Introduction to the Author and the NovelItself1.1 A Brief Introduction to the AuthorLeo Tolstoy was born into a large and wealthy Russian landowning family in 1828, on the family estate of Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy’s mother died when he was only two years old, and he idealized her memory throughout his life. Some critics speculate that the early loss of his mother colors Tolstoy’s portrayal of the young Seryozha in Anna Karenina. When Tolstoy was nine, the family moved to Moscow. Shortly afterward his father died, murdered while traveling. Being orphaned before the age of ten, albeit without financial worries, left Tolstoy with an acute awareness of the power of death—an idea central to all his great works and especially evident in the strong association of the character of Anna Karenina with mortality.Though an intelligent child, Tolstoy had little interest in -academics. His aunt had to work hard to persuade him to go to university, and he failed his entrance exam on his first attempt. Eventually matriculating at Kazan University at the age of sixteen, Tolstoy studied law and Oriental languages. He showed interest in the grand heroic cultures of Persia, Turkey, and the Caucasus—an interest that persisted throughout his life. He was not popular at the university, and was self-conscious about his large nose and thick eyebrows. Ultimately, Tolstoy was dissatisfied with his education, and he left in 1847 without a degree. The social awkwardness of Konstantin Levin at the beginning of Anna Karenina reflects Tolstoy’s own discomfort in fancy social surroudings at this time in his life.Anna karennina is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy first published in periodical installments from 1875 to 1877 .The novel first appeared as aserial in the periodical Ruskii Vestnik (Russian Messenger), but Tolstoy clashed with its editor Mikhail Katkov over issues that arose in the final installment. Therefore, the novel‟s first complete appearance was in book form.1.2 A Brief Introduction to the Novel ItselfAn introduction of novel content: Stepan Oblonsky's wife Dolly had discovered that her husband was having an affair. With her beauty fading and her household a wreck, she had had enough. Stepan fretfully wrote to his sister, Anna Karenina, asking her to come to Moscow and convince Dolly not to leave him.At that same moment, Anna and Count Vronsky were riding together in a train bound for Moscow. Vronsky noticed the charming woman as he made his way to the first-class compartment that he shared with his mother. He had time to take note of "the suppressedeagerness which played over her face" as their eyes met, and she remained in his mind. However, upon reaching their destination, the two went their separate ways - Anna to her brother's home, Vronsky and his mother to a hotel.Nevertheless, with her task of seeing to Stepan and Dolly completed, Anna boarded the next train for St. Petersburg. She thought of her son, Seryozha, and her husband, Alexey. " My life will go on in the old way, all nice and as usual," she thought. But she found that she could not easily dismiss Count Vronsky from her mind. And stepping along the way, as Anna stepped out for a breath of air, there he was. "You know that I have come to be where you are; I can't help it," confessed the officer. Anna was both delighted and flattered by this, but it was simply unthinkable that anything could come of his attraction to her. After all, she was a married woman.Meanwhile, life for Anna in St. Petersburg remained strangely unsettled. The happiness that in Moscow "had fairly flashed from her eyes, now seemed hidden somewhere far away." To her further disquiet, the love-struck Vronsky took every opportunity to see her. One night she knelt and begged him to leave her in peace; but still he persisted: "I can't think of you and myself apart. You and I are one to me." And at that moment Anna "let her eyes rest on him, full of love."Soon afterward, Alexey Karenina walked into a party and found his wife with Vronsky; but Anna denied any impropriety. Still, she and Vronsky met night after night, with Alexey seemingly powerless or unwilling to stop them. Anna by now felt "so sinful, so guilty"; but still she could not curb her passion for the Count. The following summer, while staving at her husband's villa outside the city, Anna confronted her lover with an announcement: she was pregnant. Though he understood the gravity of Anna's position, Vronsky smiled. This was the "turning point he had been longing for.""Leave your husband and make our life one," he implored. But Anna shook her head. If she left, Alexey would take sole custody of Seryozha and she would not be allowed to see her son. But Anna did promise Vronsky that she would tell her husband the truth about the child she was carrying. When Anna made her confession, Alexey, instead of showing jealousy or indignation, merely warned his wife against "public displays of flirtation." His sole concern was to preserve his social and business reputation; a duel or a divorce would only serve to disgrace him. "The family cannot be broken up by a whim, a caprice, or even by the sin of one of the partners in the marriage," he informed Anna "...Our life must go on as it hasdone in the past."Anna reacted to his words at first with guilt and shame, but this quickly turned to anger: "He knows that I can't repent that I breathe, that I love; he knows that it can lead to nothing but lying and deceit- but he wants to go on torturing me..." Vronsky also was increasingly anxious to begin a new life with Anna, who would not leave her son. And so, "the position was one of misery for all three..."But in St. Petersburg, relationships were breaking up. The nearer Anna came to the birth of her child, the more demanding and cold Alexey became. Then Anna survived a deadly fever to give birth to a baby girl. Oddly, the difficulty of the birth eased the tensions between herself and her husband. At the other extreme, Vronsky saw no end to the barriers separating him from his lover. Desperate at the prospect of living without Anna, he unsuccessfully tried shooting himself. Still torn, Anna finally did move in with him, and soon the couple left Russia to live in Italy for a time.Upon returning from Italy to St. Petersburg, Vronsky and Anna, found themselves ostracized. Gossip followed them everywhere. The couple argued frequently, and Anna, in a burst of depression, finally accused Vronsky of being unfaithful. Even after they moved into a newly-inherited estate, Anna felt alone in the world. She revived her habit of taking a little morphine to help her sleep, a legacy from her pregnancy.Summer turned to winter, and the family relocated again, this time to Moscow. There, the badly strained relationship fared no better. Though Anna pled for Vronsky to love her and give her security, at the same time she increasingly insisted on greater freedom. "This is becoming unbearable!" Vronsky screamed one day. "Why do you try my patience? It has limits." Anna could only gaze at him "with terror at the undisguised hatred in his whole face." Vronsky checked himself: "I mean to say ... I must ask what it is you want of me?" "All I want," she replied, "is that you don't desert me, as you think of doing .... I want love, and there is none... " Vronsky vainly protested; he would never cease to love her.Delirious with bitterness, Anna had no place to turn; Vronsky, she was convinced, had found another, and she could never return to Alexey. Ambling into the train station, she purchased a ticket. Then, standing on the platform, watching the trains, she said to herself "I will punish him and escape from everyone and from myself."Measuring both the speed of the oncoming train and her resolve to end her suffering, she jumped. "... Something huge and merciless struck her on the head and rolled on her back.... Lord, forgive me all!"Anna Karenina was dead.ChapterⅡA Biref AccountLeo Tolstoy is one of the greatest writers in the history of Russia literature, and Anna karennina is one of his most successful novels.Anna is generally regarded as Leo Tolstoy …s tragic masterpiece, and certainly it is his most ambitious tragic novel. This is a story of love and secular, of humanity and nature,of history and its relation to the fate of noable lady ——Anna. Tolstoy explex factors, such as social, personal, that made for her tragedy. By centering on Anna‟s misfortune, the author rasied a conspicuous question: what cause Anna‟s tragedy? I try to analyze it in the light of social milieu and personal attributes.ChapterⅢThe Social Milieu3.1 The Changeable Society and the General Sociel Background3.1.1 The Changable SocietyAt that time ,Russia was in the Tsar Time. Russia had transformed from a backward agricultural economy into a major industrialized world power. This period witnessed major debates between two intellectual groups in Russia. Russian culture and institutions to be exceptional and superior to European cultureDuring this time, Russia was also undergoing a crisis of political thought, with a series of authoritarian tsars provoking liberal and radical intellectuals who demanded European constitutional rights—or even revolution—in Russia. Tolstoy’s ambivalent portrayal of the local elections in Anna Karenina demonstrates his uncertainty about the potential for democracy in Russia: the vote evokes much enthusiasm among the noblemen, but it also appears ineffectual and even pointless.3.1.2 The General Sociel BackgroundOn the other hand, the guests at Stiva’s dinner party raise the question of women’s rights—clearly a hot topic of the day, and one that shows the influence of Western social progress on Russia. That Anna suffer in their marriages, however, does not bode well for the future of feminism in the world of the novel. Courtship procedures are equally uncertain in the world of Anna Karenina. The Russian tradition of arranged marriages is going out of fashion. Taken together, all this confusion created by fading traditions creates an atmosphere of both instability and new potential, as if humans have to decide again how to live.3.2 The Moral Issue3.2.1 The Moral Value of the Tsar AgeThe narrator goes so far as to say plainly that no one knows how young people are to get married in Russia in the 1870s.Anna‟s love was spurned by society, its reason was not their immoral behavior, on the contrary, because their behavior challenged the hypocritical and immoral life of Petersburg upper-class . They violated rules of the game in the upper-class. Everyone knowed that everyone should maintain the surface of the decent in the Petersburg upper-class. However, Anna, from the horse on the way to her home ,she told her husband that she loved Vronsky and required to divorce! The cruel society was the basic reason to Anna‟s death. At that time , women had no right to pursuited true love. The social public had the prejudice to women. In 19th century, ladies who accepted the marriage and life was the inevitable choice.3.3 The Social Status3.3.1 The Social Status of Anna KareninaAnna was a beautiful, pure and enthusiastic lady in the Petersburg upper society. Her parents died early, when she was 17 years old, she was married to a man named Karenina who was 37 years old. Anna is a beautiful person in every sense: intelligent and literate, she reads voraciously, writes children’s books, and shows an innate ability to appreciate art. Physically ravishing yet tastefully reserved, she captures the attentions of virtually everyone in high society. Anna believes in love—not only romantic love but family love and friendship as well, as we see from her devotion to her son, her fervent efforts to reconcile Stiva and Dolly Oblonsky in their marital troubles, and her warm reception of Dolly at her country home. Anna abhors nothing more than fakery, and she comes to regard her husband, Karenin, as the very incarnation of the fake, emotionless conventionality she despises.3.3.2 The Social Status of Alexder KareninKarenin was a orphan. He is Anna’s husband, a high-ranking government minister and one of the most important men in St. Petersburg. Karenin is formal and duty-bound. He is cowed by social convention and constantly presents a flawless fa?ade of a cultivated and capable man. When karenin was a mayor, Anna as a commodity was seld to him. As a husband,he really did his responsibility for his wife. Anna's background and the special life what happened to her let her don‟t understand herself in the rigid system. Their social status was destined their marriage to be broken.Their different understanding of life was root of their unfortunable marriage.3.3.3 The Social Status of Count V onskyVronsky was a nobleman .He was the best model in the Petersburg . He was very rich. He was a royal officer. He was the man who was very lovely and kind . He was graduation from militray school . At that time, he was a young officer. He loved Anna, in some words, their love was true love. He is a wealthy and dashing military officer whose love for Anna prompts her to desert her husband and son. Vronsky is passionate and caring toward Anna but clearly disappointed when their affair forces him to give up his dreams of career advancement. But they were in high social status ,one was a young officer, one was a rich lady , so Anna wanted to announce their love in public and divorce with her husband were not allowed. Later, at a party, Anna was humiliated in public by a lady whose name was tassos.ChapterⅣPersonal AttributePeople awalways evaluate Anna karennina that her husband karenin and lover Vronsky results this tragedy. If you read carefully, you will find that the social milieu is the imposed out-side reason.and the personal attribute is the internal reasons. Karenin, Count V onsky and Anna herself become the personal reason of Anna‟s tragedy. I will analyze personal attribute in the under thesis individually.4.1 Personal Attribute of Anna4.1.1 As a Youny LadyAs a young lady, Anna was just 24 years old. she was so young and beautiful. She had a strong desire to love. When Anna met "Petersburg upper-class playboy"-ward at the train station, she fell her love to Vronsky. At last, Anna broke through many obstacles and brave into Vronsky‟s bosom, but romantic and fantasy abounded to their love may not be kept long time. Especially , once Vronsky lost his passion to love, what he got was void and lonely. Although her beauty made Vronsky feel satisfied, now her suspection made him feel unhappy. Anna became a little nervous, she always let Vronsky promise that he would love her foreve rand still love her as before. She overestimated Vronsky and gave high expectation to her love. She thought he could carry her escape from "false and deception" society, but she irreversible wrong. At the end,her love was gone, she was forced to be in a hopeless situation, she accused it all: "All is false, all is lies, all is cheating, it's all sin!" 4.1.2 As a WifeAs a wife,Anna had tried to love her husband, but karenin was a machine without love, then Anna decided to leave her husband who had no emotion. Anna is the beautiful, passionate, and educated wife of Alexei Karenin, a cold and passionless governmentofficial. Her character is rich in complexity: she is guilty of desecrating her marriage and home, for instance, but she remains noble and admirable nonetheless. She is elegant, always understated in her dress. Her many years with Karenin show her capable of playing the role of cultivated, beautiful, society wife and hostess with great poise and grace. She is very nearly the ideal aristocratic Russian wife of the 1870s. she felt abandoned and played with. Finally, Vronsky use his own way to reveal hypocrisy before the nobles of the bourgeoisie. The society finally forced Anna to have a tragical life .4.1.3 As a MortherAs a mother, Anna loved her son very much. Her love couldn‟t be contented,so she only gave her love to her son. When Anna went to her brother‟s home, that's the first time she left her son, she missed her son very much, after all,her son was at the age of eight. As a mother, Anna loved her son very much. Her love couldn‟t be contented,so she only give her love to her son. When Anna went to her brother‟s home, that's the first time she left her son, she missed her son very much, after all,her son was at the age of eight. On the train, she had been talking about her son with vronsky‟s mother, and she felt as a mother she's very happy. When she told her husband that she loved vronsky, and she wanted to divorce with him,so her husband would not let her see her son. For her, this was a great deal of pain. Then she left her husband for living in the vronsky's manor. That day was her the birthday of her son, she went to see her son secretly. Her son hugged her, didn't let her go,he cried: "please don't leave me alone, nobody treat me better than you." Finally, Anna in order to get her ideal love ,she lost her beloved son, she also lost hope of survival.4.2 Personal Attribute of Karenin4.2.1 Family BackgroundKarenin was not a men. He's a bureaucratic machine. His career was success. Only a few short years,he was a cabinet minister, then becoming the most important officials in the Petersburg. What he was concerned on was how to defeat his political opponents and consolidate their position. He didn't care about his wife. When he talked to his wife, just liked himself in the official read document.4.2.2 Keep the Surface of MarriageHe maintained a marriage life with Anna. When Anna told karenin that she loved Vronsky, karenin said quietly ,he just wanted to maintain the marriage with Anna and not be laughed by others. Alexander karenin thought their wedding was god‟s willing. He blamed his wife for her bad behavior she did not pay attention to the social public opinion and understand the religious significance. He wished her that she should take herresponsibility for their son. He didn't care about his wife how got togethe with others,he only cared about his political career developed. In order to punish Anna, he made his decision to not divorce with Anna, then he was not allowed Anna to see her son.4.2.3 Never Understand LoveHis personality led Anna resolutely to give up their marriage .Anna‟s personality made her die,she knew this ,but she also against the marriage without love, At the end,she made herself go to destruction. Karenin’s limp dispassion colors his home life and serves as the backdrop to Anna’s rebellious search for love at any price. He viewed his betrothal to Anna, for instance, as an act of duty like everything else in his life: it was time to marry, so he chose an appropriate girl, who happened to be Anna. He never gives any indications of appreciating Anna’s uniqueness or valuing the ways in which she differs from other women. His appreciation of her is only for her role as wife and mother. Similarly, Karenin’s fatherly interaction with Seryozha is cold and official, focused on educational progress and never on Seryozha’s perceptions or emotions. Karenin wishes to raise a responsible child, as he surely was himself. It is Karenin’s obedience to duty, his pigeonholing of all persons and experiences as either appropriate or inappropriate, that Anna rejects. When Anna leaves, she does not simply dump Karenin the man but also the conventionalism that Karenin believes in and represents.4.3 Personal Attribute of Count V onsky4.3.1 Personal CharacteristicVronsky loved Anna at the first sight at the railway station. He was attracted by Anna's voice and smile. Vronsky as a handsome, wealthy, and charming man who is as willing as Anna is to abandon social standing and professional status in pursuit of love. His commitment to his hospital-building project also shows a Romantic passion for carrying out an individual vision of good.Vronsky is so in love with her. He and Anna had a short happy life, when Anna put their romance public to society in public, they lost their social status.4.3.2 Never Give Up PowerHowever ,under strong social pressure, vronsky changed his opinion, he decided to come back to upper-class .He felt that upper-class could bring happiness to him. Then ,he began to participate in the parliament frequently . After Anna knowed those things, she desperately looking at vronsky said: "I don't want anything,I just want you. Do we still love each other? We need not care about theirs‟opinion." Vronsky just looked at the sky then said: "God! Love !What‟s meaning of love?" When Anna heard vronsky‟s motherchoosed wife for him, she despaired on the world, she lost her sons and lovers. She thought that her life will come to the end,so she chosed to suicide herself.ChapterⅤLeo Tolstoy‟s viewWidely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction , Tolstoy considered this book as his first true novel. The character of Anna was likely inspired, in part by Maria Hartung (1832-1919),the elder daughter of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin .Soon after meeting her at dinner , Tolstoy started reading Pushkin‟s prose and once had a fleeting daydream of“a bare exquisite aristocration elbow”, which proved to be the first intimation of Anna‟s character .A magnificent drama of vengeance, infidelity, and retribution, Anna karennina portrayed the moving story of paople whose emotion conflicted with the dominant social mores of their time .Sensual, rebellious Anna fell deeply and passionately in love with the handsome Count vronsky. When she refused to conduct the discreet affair that her cold, ambitious husband and Russian high society would condone, so she was doomed.Set against the tragic love of Anna and Vronsky, the plight of the melancholy nobleman Constantine Levin unfolds. In doubt about the meaning of life, haunted by thoughts of suicide, Levin‟s struggles echo Tolstoy‟own spiritual crisis. But Anna‟s inner turmoil mirrors the own emotional imprisonment and mental disintegration of a woman who dared to transgress the strictures of a patriarchal world. In Anna karennina, Tolstoy brought to perfection the novel of social realism and created a masterpiece that bared the Russian soul. The author hold that Anna's death exposed and accused the corruption and darkness of Russia especially its upper society. Anna's image was brave, and she could challenge the upper society. Anna was essential part of awakening in the process of women liberation.ConclusionThe causes of Anna‟s tragedy due to her character , other persons‟ influence and social environment. Anna‟s tragical death has social reasons, but more important is its own reason. She can't defeat over his fall, when Vronsky ignores her,she will suspect herself and produce strong regretful consciousness: "god, please forgive my all!" -the last word. From my point of view, some people say Anna karenina is the single greastest novel ever written, which makes about as much sence to me as trying to determine the world‟s greastest color. But there is no doubt that Anna karenina , generally consider Tolstoy‟s best book, is gefinitely one ripping great read. Anana, miserable in her loveless marriage, does the barely thinkable and succumbs to her desires for the dashing Vronsky.Anna‟s tragical death has social reasons, but more important is its own reason. She can't defeat over his fall, when Vronsky ignores her,she will suspect herself and produce strong regretful consciousness: "god, please forgive my all!" -the last word. The author considers that Anna's death is inevitable ending. His ideal is that Anna‟s fate is doome to be tragical. It reflects the logic of life. Anna is worthy sympathyed by us,but it is more worthy for us serious thinking. The author considers that Anna's death is inevitable ending. His ideal is that Anna’s fate is doome to be tragical. It reflects the logic of life. Anna is worthy sympathyed by us,but it is more worthy for us serious thinking. Her against the pursuit of sincere, genuine yearning for its own personality, the liberation of the desire, are worth for us learning. In short, Anna is a brave woman and dares to defend the love. She bears the pressure from all sides in her whole life. She pursuits love and wants to have ture love. The tragedy of her has both times factors and social factors, both personal reasons and environmental reasons. It are the character tragedy and social tragedy.。
