2. This is a social revolution on a grand scale as scarcity, with which most human beings have had to struggle throughout history, has given way to an apparently permanent state of plenty. (Line 6, Para. 2)
Background Information
Some claim that greasy burgers and processed food may be the most insidious forms of American cultural imperialism. They are making the world fat. Several dietary factors that are inherent in fast foods are known to cause excessive weight gains—massive portion sizes, for example, and high energy density; palatability (appealing to human taste preferences for fats, sugar, and salt); and high content of saturated and trans fats and low fiber content. Fast food pervades virtually every segment of society, the researchers concluded that fast foods from whatever source appear to contribute an additional 57 calories to the daily diet of the average child in the United States which could amount to an additional 6 pounds of body weight if energy output were unchanged.
Background Information
In 2006, the global fast food market grew by 4.8% and reached a value of 102.4 billion and a volume of 80.3 billion transactions. KFC is located in 25 countries. Subway has 29,186 restaurants located in 86 countries. Pizza Hut is located in 26 countries, with 100 locations in China. Taco Bell has 278 restaurants located in 12 countries besides the United States. On New Year's Day 2008 a study was conducted worldwide counting the number of fast food restaurants per person. The UK was number one with Australia second and the United States third.

Fast Food and Obesity
Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. The term "fast food" was entered in a dictionary by Merriam-Webster in 1951. Nearly from the very beginning, fast food has been designed to be eaten "on the go". Common menu items at fast food outlets include fish and chips, sandwiches, pitas, hamburgers, fried chicken, French fries, chicken nuggets, tacos, pizza, hot dogs, and ice cream.
