Setting refers both to the time and place in which the action of a story takes place. In other words, it is the background against which the action of story occurs. The elements of setting may include : (1) geographic location (2) specific time period: the time of day or year or century
Case study I: A Rose for Emily
After civil war, the South’s outdated plantation economy, based so long upon slave labor, was devastated. The northern industry invaded and became widespread. With widespread industrialization, Southern aristocratic family declined and lost its honor and authority. People hold a mixed feeling towards the Old South Culture, respect/question , and gradually forgot the life of Emily (1861-1935) witnessed the great change of the south.

Case study I: A Rose for Emily
It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street. But garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated even the august names of that neighborhood; only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps--an eyesore among eyesores.

II. Function of setting
As the background, it is of great significance in the story, not only gives the reader the impression of verisimilitude , but also may functions as follows: (1) create a certain atmosphere e.g. Poe’s stories, Japan horror movies (midnight, desolate house/lift) (2) reveal the inner thought of the character Setting is often established by description, but it may also be shown through character’s action, dialogue or thinking.
