“Miss James, look! Look what I found!” Kylie held up a book nearly half her size. On the cover there was reprint of a famous painting, a landscape (山水画) that featured a shadowed Cyprus tree and an expanse of stars represented by intense of brushstrokes and vivid colors.

Kylie’s excitement reminded Miss James of a time not long ago when she, too, had felt this kind of exhilaration upon coming across a painting not unlike this one.

“It’s a Van Gogh,” Penelope had remarked, her breath seeming to escape her as she spoke. The two friends stood silently in front of the gilded (镀金的) framed canvas before them, admiring the thick lines of paint that cure and bent of from towering mountains, and a simple cottage. They moved closer to glimpse every detail of the artwork, the passion and urgency of the painter seeming to spring forward from the image, projecting itself onto the observers before it. There became a quiet understanding between the two that this work had been created by a man tortured (被迫害的), a man who never gave up his desire to paint even though he was starving and unappreciated. How could he have known how well he would be accepted by those who would come after him? It was shocking beauty and tragedy in one. Streams of tears had run down both their faces.

Kylie had presented the book to Miss James with a similar respect. She stood

next to her teacher as she opened the cover, page after page displaying a variety of art—a field of irises, a pot of sunflowers, a sailing ship along the seashore. Miss James could only think how much she wished she could show Kylie something more than a print. If she could only bring her into her memories. Even still, the child had been fascinated by what she saw before her, and she stared at each painting that passed by.

“Can we share this with the class, Miss James?” Kylie asked, wide-eyed.

“I think that’s a fantastic idea!” Miss James answered, closing the book and handing it back to her delighted students.
