Analysis of The Old Man and the Sea

The novel is about Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, who went to sea for 84 days without catching a fish. People thought he was unlucky, but he was not discouraged. On the 85th day, he went to a farther sea alone and met a big marlin, which he had never seen before. He fought with the marlin for two days and nights, and finally overpowered it. But when he triumphed, he met a group of sharks. In order to preserve his victory, he fought with the sharks for another day and night, and finally the sharks were driven away, but his Marlin flesh was swallowed up by the sharks, leaving only a huge skeleton of fish. He came home exhausted and fell asleep, dreaming of lions. The novel is thrilling and profound.

The Old Man and the Sea is based on the Bible and Greek culture. Hemingway rewrites the images of Christ, tragic consciousness, and destiny, and creates a modern "invincible hero".

The old man is an emotional man, which is manifested in his attachment to Manolin, his mourning for his deceased wife, and his love for fishing. On the one hand, he regards the marlin as an opponent, on the other hand, he regards it as a friend. In the two-day and two-night contest, he admires the marlin more and more and loves the marlin. The old man changed his initial hatred for the marlin into infinite love. He was deeply impressed by the strength of the marlin. He regarded the marlin as another self.

The old man is also a loner. He is alone and has no children. Loneliness always accompanies him in the process of fishing. The novel mentions several times that he is an eccentric old man. He often goes out to sea alone. He always misses his little apprentice Manolin at sea, hoping to have an object of communication and a person to relieve his distress. Therefore, he had to talk to himself at sea, sometimes talking to fish, sometimes talking to birds, sometimes shouting at himself, all of which reflected the old man's heavy loneliness and the human situation: people are isolated and helpless in this world.

This novel is the best example of Hemingway's "Iceberg Theory". On the surface, it is very simple, but its meaning is very complex. Hemingway could have written about Santiago's hometown, the local boat races, illegal wine and alcohol sales, revolutions and all aspects of the countryside. But he took these as seven eighths of the things, hiding them under the water, only writing about the old man fighting with the fish, hiding the most valuable human character ——brave and strong.
