Historical background

Mark Twain is one of the most frequently quoted writers in American literature, having commented on almost every issue of his time. Much of what he said over nine decades ago remains relevant today. His life and writings can be classified into 3 periods: 1.1865—1870 optimistic, jocular humor, light-hearted 2. 1872—1891 still with dream 3. 1891—1910 pessimistic and disappointed, sharp satire, criticism
35 years old, he got married, and his wife was a very wealthy man’s daughter unfortunate investments in a typesetting machine and a publishing house kept him in financial difficulties. 59 years old, everything came crashing down. His health was broken down and his investment failed Twain had to declare himself a bankrupt, had to sell his house. He moved with his family to Europe, where living could be cheaper and they could spend less.
Characteristic of realism
Realism aims at the description of the actualities of the life and free from subjective prejudice, idealism or romantic color. Realism focuses on commonness of the common people. Life is presented as it is. Use real characters, real incidents, real language and local dialects. Representative writers: William Howells, Mark Twain, Henry James.

pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens brought up in the small town of Missouri, on the Mississippi River. 12, his father died and he had to drop out. he engaged himself with different jobs He worked as a printer’s apprentice, a tramp printer, a silver miner, a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi, and a frontier journalist in Nevada and California and even a prospector in the years following the California gold rush. When he worked as a pilot in the river, he got his pen name ―Mark Twain‖, a term signifying ―safe water‖ or ―two fathoms deep‖.
In 1895 and 1896, he set out a world lecture tour to retrieve his fortune. Through his hard work, he could pay back all the debts and finally build up a substantial income. his younger daughter, an epileptic, died in 1896 and his other daughter died suddenly of meningitis His wife became an invalid. threw Mark Twain into deep depress. He became more and more desperate and bitter not only in his life, but also in his writings.
