YungangCaves,oneofChina¡¯sfourmostfamous"BuddhistCavesArtTreasureH ouses",islocatedaboutsixteenkilometerswestofDatong,ShanxiProvince. Thereexists53caves,mostofwhicharemadeduringtheNorthernWeiDynastybe tween460and494AD,andover51,000stonesculptures.Itextendsonekilomete rfromeasttowestandcanbefallenintothreemajorgroups.
¡¡¡¡Thefirstgroup(includingCave1,Cave2,Cave3andCave4)areattheeaste rnendseparatedfromothers.Cave1andCave2havesufferedfromrigorsoftime andtheweather.Cave3,anafterthoughtaftertheNorthernWeiDynasty,isthe largestgrottoamongYungangcaves.
¡¡¡¡ToursnormallybeginfromthesecondgrouprangingfromCave5toCave13.Y ungangartmanifestsitsbestinthisgroup.Cave5containsaseatedBuddhawit haheightof17meters.InCave6,a15-meter-hightwostoreypagodapillarstan dsinthecenterofchamberandthelifeoftheBuddhafrombirthtotheattainmen tofnirvanaiscarvedinthepagodawallsandthesidesofthecave.TheBodhisat tvawasengravedinCave7.TherareseenShivaStatueinYungangwitheightarms andfourheadsandridingonabullisillustratedinCave8.Cave9andCave10are notableforfrontpillarsandfiguresbearingmusicalinstruments.Musician splayinginstrumentsalsoappearinCave12.Cave13hastheBuddhastatuewith agiantfigurinesupportingitsrightarm.
