Different from former works, this film returns to campus life and consists of three sectors, embodying a pair of lover’s experiences before and after their separation through the hero’s eyes. Yielding to reality, the two protagonists have experienced closeness, long-distance and finally separation within their relationship. After many years apart, they meet each other again, only to make no greetings and leave respectively. The tragic film reminds audiences to seize opportunities and cherish the present people: “The falling speed of sakura is 5 centimeters per second while the launch speed of a rocket is 5 kilometers per second; how fast should one person live to meet the loving one in time?”

Makoto Shinkai, whose original name is Makoto Niitsu, was scheduled to be the fourth inheritor of Niitsu, a family enterprise with over 100 year’s history.
