When he rode on the rocking horse, there were strange expressions in his eyes. Even the black hair gave others the horrors. When he announced enthusiastically that “I get there”, he said there is where he wanted to go. All these formed the sharp contrast that the lucky land he wanted to go put him in the crazy and inhuman process. He forced the rocking horse, but in truth, he forced himself to sacrifice his life, to rush to the end of his life. He tried to keep the secret on the purpose to protect others, because he was doing business with the God using the wager of his life. His servant, Baths, once said “he seems to get help from the God.” It is true that he indeed get help from the God, but it cost his life. When his mother deposited the 5000 pound at a time, he heard the more terrible noise reverberating in his chamber, which made him more frighten and therefore became crazier. With all the symptoms, he was rushing to the end of his life. This terrible condition made even his mother who concerned nothing but fortunes becoming anxiety.

The rocking horse winner
In the fairy tale, the rocking horse winner, what the author wants to reveal the scourge that was caused by the adults’ greed on the children’s inner hearts. Master Paul, the main character, tried his best to meet his mother’ greed, even at the price of his life. In the tale little Paul mentioned many times that he wanted to go “there”. But where is there indeed? In the text, it said “he knew the horse could take him to where there is luck.” The premise is that “if only he forced it.” In the child’s heart, he was to search the lucky land, but it was rough on the way. The process of this search made him crazy. In the tale, this process always linked to death. When little Paul said that he was lucky, his mother asked “is the God tell you that?” he responded that “the God should do that.”

David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930) was an important and controversial English writer of the 20th century, with his output spanning novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters. These works, taken together, represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour.
