TiO2 photocatalyst: Challenge
Low quantum efficiency (~4%). It is difficult to deal with industrial waste-gas or waste-water with large quantity and high concentration. Low utilization of solar energy. TiO2 semiconductor can only absorb ultraviolet light (~4 % of sunlight), due to its band structure (Eg = 3.2 eV). Load technology of photopcatalyst. It’s difficult to load the photocatalyst firmly and uniformly on different materials’ surface under the premise of maintaining high photocatalytic activity and meet requirements of specific materials’ phycical-chemical properties. Research on super-hydrophilicity mechanism and film technique.

Basic reactions of TiO2 in the solution under UV irradiation
(a): surface recombination of external holes and photo-induced electrons transferred to its surface, (b) photo-induced electrons transfer to its surface to reduce the acceptor, (c) volume recombination of photo-induced electrons and photo-induced holes, (d) photo-induced holes diffuse to its surface to oxidize donor

What is photocatalysis?
Photocatalysis is the acceleration of a photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst: light is absorbed by catalyst to create electron–hole pairs, which generate free radicals (e.g. hydroxyl radicals: •OH), able to undergo secondary reactions. Among lots of photocatalysts, TiO2 becomes a very suitable and brilliant one for its advantages of low-cost, non-toxicity, chemical stability, anti-photocorrosion, high photocatalytical activity, etc.
