• A euphemism is a polite word or expression that is used to refer to things that people may find upsetting or embarrassing to talk about. • e.g. 1."Last night, early on, you went to Lindy's Place in Irish Bayou. You drove there in your fancy Jaguar, and you took a lady friend. 2.Chug,chug, chug. Puff, puff, puff. Ding-dong, dingdong. The little train rumbled over the tracks.

三.Appreciation and Writing Features
Part 1(Para.1-3):introduce the meeting of house detective Ogilvie with the Duke and the Duchess. Part 2(Para.4-22):describe the Croydon’s helplessness before the facts. Part 3Para.23-99):tell how the Duchess uses her wits in the conflict between blackmailing and antiblackmailing. Part 4(Para.100-109): describe the Duchess ’s intervention in the blackmailing. Offering 25000 dollars to the house detective ,the Duchess firmly controls the situation and the arrogant Ogilvie becomes obedient.

Type of writing
• This kind of novels are called thrillers（惊险小说）. Generally defining, a thriller is a work fiction or drama designed to hold the interest by the use of a high degree of intrigue ,adventure or suspense. • Others can be called cop-criminal novels, detective novels. The main purpose is for entertainment, amusement . • very often this kind of novels contain a lot of action, usu. Suspension ,not very much deep thought , without moral intention ,not consider classic. • The basic technique is to make the whole story of crime into something like a jigsaw puzzle(拼版游戏). you can not see the outcome until the final part is put in .
e.g. Ogilvie：fat ,piggy ,obese, self- assured, shameless, subservient ,etc.. the Duchess :gray-green ,imperious , decisive, vigilant, etc..
2.Slangy and ungrammatical expressions employed by the house detective contrasted sharply with the well –educated and grammatical language by the Croydons. e.g. Ogilvie: “pretty neat set-up”, “now then” “ain’t” ,etc.. the Duchess: “I imagine you did not come here to discuss decor.” the Duke: “it’s no go ,old girl.”

星期四：奥格尔维探长开车离开，恰好被彼得看见。白天 被撞死的母女下葬。晚上，报社打来电话，告知公爵他不 久将会出任驻华盛顿大使，于是公爵改变计划，公爵留下 应对采访，公爵夫人独自去芝加哥。与此同时，彼得开始 怀疑公爵夫妇遇车祸的关系，并与警察联系分析这件事。 奥格尔维在美国被捕，辩解说自己与此事无关，是公爵夫 妇给自己钱，让自己把车开到美国。警方询问公爵夫妇， 并开始找证据——一张公爵夫人写的纸条。 星期五：公爵决定赶在警察到来之前自首，并尽力使夫人 不牵连进去，嘱咐夫人用给探长的1万5去请律师。公爵走 后，夫人发现那笔钱被偷了。公爵乘坐4号电梯下楼，结 果电梯出事故，公爵死亡。警方把公爵夫人作为同谋犯提 出起诉，决定在公爵葬礼之后抓捕公爵夫人。同时对奥格 尔维提出指控，作为同谋犯，奥格尔维被饭店开除。

Transferred Epithet is a figure of speech in which an adjective properly modifying one noun is shifted to an other noun in the same sentence. e.g.1. The old man put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. 2.He said yes to the question in an unthinking moment.

头韵（alliteration） “Repetition and playing upon the same letter” usu. Repetition of an initial sound that is usually a consonant. The major function is to link the phonetic and semantic parts of words, so it is something of stubborn. e.g. with sudden savagery waved the unlighted cigar under his adversary 's, everybody else.
