Ⅰ. 阅读理解AMy students entered the art room with their usual eagerness to see what they would be learning in today’s class. Little did they know they were going to be students for a new teaching method that is spreading the nation.I often use videos as previews and supplements (补充) to our art lessons providing students with a variety of artists showing their skills in real-life situations outside the classroom. Finding a new painting technique called glue batik(胶水蜡染), I thought of something new I h adn’t tried before! How awesome would it be to learn a new technique together with artists? The lesson was planned, presented to the students without any introduction or set objectives. I also asked the students to watch and pause the video as often as they needed to.They watched as the artist explained and showed her skills, taking notes on her steps and results. After the video, they shared what they felt the artist’s objectives were, her end result using art vocabulary as well as the steps they would need to know to present their own examples. Then they began creating their works using the glue batik technique.Surfing the Internet a couple of weeks later, I found that the teaching method I used sounded very familiar to a new movement in education called flipped teaching, which was developed by Jonathan Bergmann. He asked his students to watch videolectures at home and do exercises (homework) in class under supervision (监督). He found that grades went up and he also found time for other types of activities, which Bergmann states are more important than the videos.Back to my art class, the students were learning to get ideas, make predictions, and explain reasoning to their classmates. Together they compared, asked questions and made discoveries as they presented the technique.1. Which of the following is one of the benefits of flipped teaching? A. Teachers needn’t check students’ homework. B. Students can control their own learning pace. C. Students can choose whatever they want to learn. D. Teachers can develop their own teaching methods. 【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。

Unit4Makingthenews阅读理解AHe had more than 160 reports as a reporter on the Metro des k and more than 170 in 19 months as a national journalist bas ed in Kansas City,Mo.But perhaps the most important piece of writing that A.G .Sulzberger did for The New York Times before Wednesday—when he was named deputy publisher—was not an article and was not published in The Times, but w as all about The Times. That work came to be known as the “innovation(创新) report”,which zeroed in on the importance of a digital future for the n ewspaper his family has owned since 1896 and said The Tim es risked losing its leading place if it did not make sweeping c hanges. In a conversation in his office on Wednesday, Mr. Sulzberger said he saw the innovation report and the thinking that led tohis conclusions as “a wakeup call to the newsroom that we w ere at risk of missing the moment”.“It was always easy to see how changes will endanger the tra ditions of the place,” he said,“but what became really clear to me was not changing was th e more dangerous course if we cared about the traditions of t he place.”Unlike some of the former deputy publishers in his role, Mr.Su lzberger has been more experienced in the newsroom than in advertising or consumer marketing.Still, his colleagues described him as a quick study whose modest y masked deep inner confidence.Besides,in the newsroom or out on an assignment,Mr.Sulzberger did not show off his connection to The Times’ o wners.“I recognized the name,”said Vincent Bova,a video editor who figured in a feature article that Mr. Sulzber ger wrote in 2010.“I mean, I knew I was dealing with royalty.T here was no reason for me to bring that up with him, and he di dn’t.”So Mr.Sulzberger,in some way,has qualified himself for the position since long time ago.【解题导语】本篇文章属于人物介绍类,介绍了著名出版人A.G.Sulzberger对《纽约时报》的重要贡献,还介绍了他提出的“创新报道”理论以及他人对他的评价。

Unit 4 Making the news单元检测Ⅰ.阅读理解AHave you winterized your horse yet? Even though global warming may have made our climate more mild, many animals are still hibernating (冬眠). It's too bad that humans can't hibernate. In fact, as a species, we almost did.Apparently, at times in the past, peasants in France liked a semi-state of human hibernation. So writes Graham Robb, a British scholar who has studied the sleeping habits of the French peasants. As soon as the weather turned cold, people all over France shut themselves away and practiced the forgotten art of doing nothing at all for months on end.In line with this, Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio's The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has changed fundamentally since the invention of artificial (人造的) lighting and the electric bulb. When historians began studying texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something referred to as "first sleep", which was not clarified, though. Now scientists are telling us our ancestors most likely slept in separate periods. The business of eight hours' uninterrupted sleep is a modern invention. In the past, without the artificial light of the city to bathe in, humans went to sleep when it became dark and then woke themselves around midnight. The late night period was known as "The Watch". It was when people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited family and neighbours.According to some sleep researchers, a short period of insomnia (失眠) at midnight is not a disorder. It is normal. Humans can experience another state of consciousness aroundtheir sleeping, which occurs in the brief period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be an extraordinarily creative time for some people. The impressive inventor, Thomas Edison, used this state to hit upon manyof his new ideas.Playing with your sleep rhythms can be adventurous, as anxiety may set in. Medical science doesn't help much in this case. It offers us medicines for a full night's continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however, according to Warren's theory, it is really the opposite of what we need.1. The example of the French peasants shows the fact that ___________.A. people might become lazy as a result of too much sleepB. there were signs of hibernation in human sleeping habitsC. people tended to sleep more peacefully in cold weatherD. winter was a season for people to sleep for months on end2. The late night was called "The Watch" because it was a time for people __________.A. to set traps to catch animalsB. to wake up their family and neighboursC. to remind others of the timeD. to guard against possible dangers3. What does the author advise people to do?A. Sleep in the way animals do.B. Consult a doctor if they can't sleep.C. Follow their natural sleep rhythm.D. Keep to the eight-hour sleep pattern.4. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A. To give a prescription for insomnia.B. To urge people to sleep less.C. To analyze the sleep pattern of modern people.D. To throw new light on human sleep.BMike Miles hadn't had a stable job in years. He bounced around from one position to another, never sure when his last day would be. Sometimes, he lost a position with less than a day's notice. This wasn't due to a poor work ethic—from arriving early to staying late, Miles says he did everything he could to build a good relationshipwith employers. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go.It wasn't until October 2015, nearly a decade after his release from prison, that a cousin told Miles about Lancaster Food Company, a local business that focuses on hiring people released from prison. Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview, and he then began a new job.Miles' scenario is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate holds steady at 30%. This figure riled Charlie Crystle, Lancaster's co-founder and CEO. Crystle was raised in Lancaster but left in 1986 to purse a college degree and later, a career in technology. He co-founded four tech companies, one of which sold for millions of dollars back in 2000.Crystle is skeptical that many of Lancaster's low-income residents can get started the way he did. He believes food production is a key way to meet former offenders who may lack a college degree. Lancaster produces products like bread. Nowadays the company is rapidly expanding; however, at just 16 full-time employees, including administration and owners, it doesn't lower the city's poverty rate.Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies to rethink their current practices and start conversations around minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex-offenders. Dan Jurman, who chairs the city's Commission to Combat Poverty, believes that Crystle's business is a great way to make this happen. "None of us can handle these issues alone, " he said.5. The purpose of the first paragraph is to show __________ .A. a man's difficulty in living a stable lifeB. an increasingly competitive workplaceC. a decrease in employment opportunitiesD. the reason why Lancaster Food Company was founded6. What does the underlined word "riled" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A. Annoyed.B. Discouraged.C. Amused.D. Embarrassed.7. What words can best describe Charlie Crystle according to the text?A. Outgoing, kind and considerate.B. Wealthy but a little bit greedy.C. Humorous, diligent and ambitious.D. Successful and socially responsible.8. In Dan Jurman's opinion, what is the biggest achievement of Lancaster Food Company?A. It greatly increases employment opportunities.B. It suggests an idea for fighting poverty.C. It provides a way to handle ex-offenders.D. It creates a stable environment for people.Ⅱ.完形填空阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Actually, Weihenmayer began to lose his sight when he was a teenager. Rather than focus on things that he could not do, like playing baseball, driving a car or riding a bike, Weihenmayer began to focus on things he could do and could do well. As a natural athlete, he then became interested in rock climbing, and always imagined what it would be like standing on top of the world. One day, Weihenmayer decided to climb Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. He prepared for the climb by repeatedly running up and down the stairs in a 50-story building while wearing a 70-pound backpack. When the time approached for him and his friends to climb Mount McKinley, some small changes had to be made for Weihenmayer. He found that by attaching small bells to the climber ahead of him, he could confidently follow without having to ask for directions. At last, Weihenmayer made it safely up Mount McKinley and back down again. Then Weihenmayer went on to climb Mount Qomolangma. Many people thought it was too dangerous and foolish even to try. Others questioned how safe his climbingpartners would feel. They wondered what Weihenmayer could do if his partners were in jeopardy. Actually, during the climb there was a time when he and a partner were caught in the dark when their headlights failed. It was Weihenmayer who led his partner to safety, because he was the better climber in the dark. These days, when Weihenmayer is not climbing, he speaks to audiences across the country. He encourages them to work toward their goals no matter what difficulties may come their way. He talks to people both blind and sighted about leadership, motivation and teamwork. For many years it has been supposed that there is a large dinosaur-like monster in Loch Ness. However, several scientific studies have been conducted and these have not shown any presence of such a monster. Many people believe that the size (21 square miles) and great depth of the lake (almost 800 feet), together with possible underwatercaves, gives the monster many places to hide. Regardless of the truth, the suggestion of the monster’s existence makes Loch Ness one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions.Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish lake by surface area after Loch Lomond, but as for its depth it is the largest by volume (容量). Its deepest point is 230m (754 feet), deeper than the height of London’s BT (British Telecom) Tower at 189m (620 feet) and deeper than any other lake besides Loch Morar. It contains more fresh water than all lakes in England and Wales combined, and is the largest body of water on the Great Glen geologic fault (大峡谷断层) which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south. The Caledonian Canal, which connects the sea at either end of the fault, uses Loch Ness for part of its route. It is one of a series of interconnected, dark bodies of water in Scotland; its water visibility (能见度) is extremely low because of a high peat (泥煤) content in the surrounding soil. The only island on Loch Ness is Cherry Island, visible at its southwestern end, near Fort Augustus. It is a crannog, which is a form of artificial island. (Most crannogs were constructed during the Iron Age.) At Drumnadrochit is the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre which explores the mystery through the natural history of Loch Ness. Traveling on ships for pleasure is now available, and it gives visitors the chance to look for the monster. And there are more tourist attractions where the whole family can relax and have fun.29. What can we learn about the Loch Ness monster?A. It has moved to live in a nearby lake.B. It looks much bigger than a dinosaur.C. It was once found in an underwater cave.D. Whether or not it exists is still unknown.30. According to the text, Loch Ness _____.A. is the second deepest lake after Loch MorarB. is the largest freshwater lake in EuropeC. has only existed for over one centuryD. has a depth of more than 800 feet31. What will the author most probably talk about next?A. Why there was a monster in Loch Ness.B. What people can do on Cherry Island.C. Where people can enjoy themselves.D. How Loch Ness came into being.32. The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to _____.A. discussB. introduceC. educateD. persuadeD★★★★☆Is cursive writing (草写体) an out-of-date skill in today’s technological society? The new education standards for English do not require cursive. However, schools are still allowed to teach cursive if they choose. Some schools are considering giving up cursive, since it is not on standardized tests. This topic is now being discussed in teacher lunchrooms around the country. We invited some inspired teachers to weigh in. Here’s what one of them, Eldra Avery, has to say.I failed a handwriting assignment in eighth grade, but my teacher told me that I was well able to have that type of handwriting. So I improved my handwriting and now have beautiful cursive handwriting. I teach English, and at times I ask my students to do assignments in cursive. Since they will be taking timed writing exams throughout their educational career, it is necessary that they practice writing at a speed that will allow them to finish their task. When you have three letters connected in a word, it flows, and when you lift your pen only at the end of a word, it is faster than printing (印刷体), which lifts the pen at the completion of each letter.Handwriting is a reflection (反映) of our humanity. We dream of a future with more advanced technology and less labor, but truthfully, if technology prevents us from using skills that are essential ly human, I wonder if that can be called “progress.” Cursive connects us to our past and our future. If students can’t write cursive, they can’t read cursive. And if they can’t read cursive, how can they read historical papers like the Declaration of Independence?Writing cursive is a process that helps improve language learning. Copying text by hand does a lot of good to students. My students complete a poetry analysis paper each year. Many of them tell me that they couldn’t begin to understand their poem until they copied it by hand. Handwriting is a valuable communication tool. Communication through handwriting will always be a necessity. To imagine that the whole world communicates by typing would be a rather poor view.33. According to Paragraph 1, teachers are discussing _____.A. whether cursive should be taughtB. whether students should read cursiveC. how to look at handwriting assignmentsD. how to improve students’ cursive writing34. Why does Ms. Avery mention her students in the last paragraph?A. To show the positive side of handwriting.B. To introduce an effective learning method.C. To show the importance of copying poems.D. To share her first-hand teaching experience.35. Ms. Avery would probably agree that _____.A. handwriting should be replaced by typingB. there should be fewer standardized testsC. cursive is more effective than printingD. cursive helps us learn about the future第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

To a certain degree, it's a matter of logic (逻辑)-of being able to spot weaknesses in other people's arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence. In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking-the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. ___1___ The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thinking.___2___ As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械的)exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. ___3___What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. ___4___ As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. ___5___ As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations. If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speakinghas been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.A.Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.B.This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.C.It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.D.It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas.E.If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.F.The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.G.As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well.Ⅴ.短文改错(2011·西安五校一模)On my way home after school there had an accident.
