当句首为副词out ,in ,up ,down ,off ,here ,there 等,且主语为名词时,应用完全倒装。

如:In came the doctor.

On top of the hill stands a big pine tree.

除be 以外,能与there 连用的动词还有seem ,exist ,happen ,appear ,live ,stand 等。

如:There were a lot of people in the park last Sunday.

Gone are the days when we Chinese were looked down upon.

Long live the Chinese Communist Party of China! May you succeed!
4. ______________ to the party, Nancy was very upset.
A. Having not been invited
B. Not having invited
C. Having not invited
D. Not having been invited

The Beaver海狸 and Its Goal
Last fall there was a beaver moving in the small stream beside our house. He immediately began taking down small trees, and within a couple of weeks our small stream turned into a small pond. Every day he added more to his dam and to his house.
With the stream now dammed up and his house built, we thought that would be the last of the beaver’s busy activity as winter set in. But, to our amazement, he started chewing on a very large maple tree. Over the winter, when the weather allowed, he kept coming back and would chew a bit more.
With spring finally arriving, we went down to see the beaver’s progress and sure enough the tree was going to come down soon! The beaver’s original goal was to build a home for the winter. Working every day with that particular focus in mind, he achieved that goal. But the large maple tree he started chewing on last fall was a future goal—he wanted the large tree for the spring, to provide new food and branches to continue damming in anticipation of the spring thaw. And, even with the setbacks he faced over the winter, he never gave up.
Sometimes we have a goal to just survive, but we also need to set goals for tomorrow. It is also very important that when faced with setbacks in achieving a goal, you need to stay focused and don’t let the setbacks discourage you.

The writer tried to tell us the importance of setting goals through a beaver’s story. After the beaver built a house for the winter, it set another goal for the spring----chewing / to chew down a big tree and succeeded by working hard.
The quest for success always begins with a target. Goal-setting is the focus of will to move in a certain direction. Without goals, one will never know what he’s doing, nor will he try to do his best.
There goes the saying, “Hard work leads to success.” If we want to achiev e our goals, we must work hard. Also, we should stick to our goals and never give up when we are faced with setbacks.
Last year I took part in an English Speech Contest. At the beginning I made up my mind to perform best though my English was not good enough. I tried every means and even stood in front of the mirror to practise again and again. Finally I succeeded and became one of the 10 students in the final competition.

21. There is no denying that some people live to be older than others. Followed arc the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity (长寿)?Are there any kinds of personalities contributing to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at these questions by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.
According to the study, those who live the longest are more outgoing, more active and lessneurotic(神经质的)than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic andcooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you I would expect from the
evolutionary theory: those who liketo make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.
Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their way.
Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.
Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother's personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood ea ting can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids depressed moms end up dying younger.
Personality isn’t destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.
32. The purpose of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is.
A. to see whether people's personality affects their life span
B. to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their health
C. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long life
D. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity
33. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?
A. They have a good understanding of evolution.
B. They are better at negotiating an agreement.
C. They generally appear more resourceful.
D. They are more likely to get over hardship.
34. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?
A. Easy-going people can also live a ly long life.
B. Advantageous personality characteristics actually vary with times.
C. Such characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.
D. Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.
35. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Anxiety and depression cut one's life span short.
B. Longevity results from mental and physical health.
C. Personality plays a decisive role in longevity.
D. Health is in large part related to one's life style.
