The oily waterenters the separator in the upper half of the unit and is directed downwards to the conical plates. T alk about the operation of the ballast system.(1)The ballast system is arranged to ensure that water can be drawn from any tank or the sea and discharged to any other tank or the sea asrequired to trim the vessel. Combine or separate mains for suction and discharge may be provided. Where a tank or cargo space can be used for ballast or dry cargo then either a ballast or bilge connection will be required. (2)The system must therefore be arranged so that only the appropriate pipeline is in service; the other must be securelyblanked(安全隔离) or closed off. The automatic filling of any tank may be obtained by opening the valve of sea water main connected to the discharge main. For operating the ballast system, care must taken when we open or close the relative valves. Usually the ballast pump is centrifugal pump, so it must be operated according to the requirement.15. Take over watch.Before taking over an engineering watch, the relieving engineer should check various things.(1)He should read the standing orders and special instructions ofthe chief engineer. (2)He should be aware of all work being performed on machinery and systems. (3)He should check the level and condition of fuel, water or residues in tanks and bilges.(4)He should know the condition and mode of operation of the main and auxiliary systems (5)He should also check other necessary things.4. Hand over watch.At the completion of the watch, each member of watch-keeping should hand over to his relief, ensuring that the relief is competent to take over and carry out his duties effectively. Before going off duty, the engineer in charge of the watch shall ensure that all events related to the main and auxiliary machinery are suitably recorded. He should tell the relieving engineer the standing orders, special instructions and unfinished work, if any. If he has any reason to believe that the relieving engineer is not capable of carrying out the watch-keeping duties effectively, he shall not hand over the watch and the chief engineer shall be notified.5. Standby engine before departure.When standing-by engine for sailing, we should do various things.(1)We should check various systems and parts of the main engine.We should warm up the main engine.We should engage the turning gear and give the engine at least one complete turn. 19. Open shut-off valve(截止阀) for starting air tank, close the drain valve on the starting air manifold(管路).

8. If hoppers(观察镜) or sight glasses are fitted check that there is an adequate flow of coolant through each piston, cylinder head, cylinder jacket, turbocharger casing and injector(油头).
16. All hand oil- and greaselubricated ( 油 脂 润 滑 ) bearing must be checked to see that their lubrication is correct, the control linkage (连接) is well lubricated and easily operated(操控).
4. Start up jacket water pumps and check pressures. Bring into operation the heating system of the cooling water.
The temperature of the cooling water returns from the jackets, liners and pistons should be raised gradually ( 逐 渐 的 ) to 60℃(140℉).
6. Start up lubricating oil pumps and check that at working pressure, oil flows uniformly(均匀地) from all the bearings and then close up the crankcase.
7. Start up injector cooling pumps (油头冷却水泵), check pressure.
Bring into operation the heating system for the fuel injector cooling water tank to raise the temperature of the water to 60℃ over a period of about two hours.
and the rate of heating so arranged that the temperature of the piston cooling oil returns are 32 to 35℃ over a period of at least two hours.

17. Check the engine room telegraph( 车 钟 ) for proper functioning and at the same time check the telephones to the bridge and Chief Engineer’s office.

9. Check that any vents(放气管) in the systems are clear to allow the free flow of air from the cylinder cooling passages and turbochargers.

The charge air coolers(空冷器) should also be vented. Unvented spaces encourage the formation of steam ( 气 塞 ) , corrosion, erosion(侵蚀) and local overheating(局部过热).

11. Check that the level of oil in the turbocharger is correct.

12. Ensure that starting and control air valves are shut off and engage the turning gear.

14. Pump up the starting air reservoirs to their maximum pressure and drain the air reservoirs and air system.

15. The scavenge drain should be cracked open. The drains from diaphragm glands(隔板 压盖) should be slightly open.
轻微开启扫气箱放残阀和隔板盘根箱 放残阀。
检查机舱车钟功能是否正常,同时查 看 ( 机舱 ) 与驾驶台和轮机长办公室的 通话是否畅通。
18. Check the reversing ( 倒 车 ) and control gear, running direction safety interlocks (转向联动安全装 置 ) , auto-shut-down devices, alarm devices for correct functioning(功能正常).
空冷器(冷却水侧)亦需放气。未放气 腔室易形成气塞, 发生腐蚀、侵蚀或局 部过热。
10. Start up fuel priming pumps (供油泵), check pressure. The system should be cleared of air by means of the various air vent cocks(旋塞) or valves.
LESSON 29
PREPARATION FOR STAND-BY
1.When instructions ( 指 令 ) have been received that the main engine is to be prepared for running, the following procedure(程序) for any make of marine diesel engine should be followed(遵循):

13. Start the turning gear, and with some one hand-operating(manual) the cylinder lubricators at regular intervals, and with the indicator cocks(示功旋塞) open, and with the control gear(控制机构) in the ‘stop’ position, give the engine at least one complete turn. 在示功旋塞打开, 控制机构在“停车”位置, 有人定期地手摇气缸注油器的情况下, 起动 盘车机, 转车至少一周。
The purified fuel tanks to be raised to the required temperature. Switch on the power to various auxiliaries and to the control console(控制台).
3. Check that all valves in the various systems are operational and check the jacket water and lubricating pumps. Any leaks to be rectified(修 复) immediately(立即instant).
The warming through ( 暖 机 ) period should extend ( 持 续 ) over a period of approximately four hours.
5. Check through the crankcase, etc, for any tools, obstructions( 障碍物 ) or waste material and remove them and make sure that everything is correct(in good order).
