Unit 1答案

1. Spelling1. resolution2. spontaneous3. creativity4. jovially5. compliment6. shriek7. chore8. commotion9. desirable 10. attribute 11. gratification 12. Bestseller2. DictationThe United States is becoming more and more a “cashless society”. People are making purchases by cheque, charge accounts or credit cards, rather than carrying large amounts of money in their pockets or purses.Normally people pay by cheque at the end of each month at department stores and some food markets and drugstores. They also pay monthly by cheque for rent, telephone, calls, electricity, milk, newspaper deliveries, and similar household expenses. Many have charge cards to pay for petrol and service station expenses and credit cards for restaurant, hotel, and travel costs. Many other people, however, prefer to pay-as-they-go and not accumulate monthly bills. Most people work out a combination, paying some bills in cash and charging others. This is a matter of personal choice. But if you have charge accounts, be sure to pay promptly; the interest charged for late payments can be high.3. Translation1.每当他午夜下班回家,他总是蹑手蹑脚地上楼,以免吵醒邻居。

施⼼远主编听⼒教程3-(第2版)Unit-2答案UNIT 2Section One Tactics for listeningPart 1 Sport DictationMy MotherMy mother was an efficient (1) taskmaster who cooked, cleaned and shopped for nine people (2) on a daily basis. She was a disciplinarian* who would (3) make us seven kids walk up and down the stairs a hundred times if we clumped like (4)field hands to-dinner. She also enlisted us to help her in the day's (5) chores. My mother believed that each of her children had a special (6) knack that made him or her invaluable on certain(7)missions.My brother Mike, for example, was believed to have especially (8) keen eyesight. He was hoisted up as a human (9) telescope whenever she needed to see something (10) far away. John was the climber when a kite (11) got caught. My own job was navigator for our (12) gigantic old Chrysler. But my mother's (13) ability to get work done well was only (14) one side. She also had an (15) imagination that carried her in different directions. That (16) allowed her to transcend her everyday life. She did not (17) believe in magic as portrayed on a stage, but (18) valued instead the sound of a metal bucket being (19)filled by a hose, or the persistence of a dandelion at the (20)edge of a woodpile.Part 2 Listening for GistFor hundreds of years man has been fascinated by the idea of flying. One of the first men to produce designs for aircraft was Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian artist who lived in the fifteenth century. However, it was not until the eighteenth century that people began to fly, or perhaps it would be better to say float, across the countryside in balloons. The first hot-air balloon was made in April 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers in France. In the following years many flights were made by balloon. Some of the flights were for pleasure and others were for delivering mail and for military purposes, such as observation and even bombing. However, in the late nineteenth century, airship s superseded balloons as a form of transport.Airships came after balloons. The first powered and manned flight was made by a Frenchman, Giffard, in September 1852. His airship, powered by steam, traveled twenty-seven kilometers from Paris to Trappes at a speed of eight kilometers per hour. However the days of the airship were numbered as the aero- plane became increasingly safe and popular.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the passage and write down the gist and the key words that help you decide.1.This passage is about the early history of flying.2.The key words are designs, an Italian artist, fifteenth century, eighteenthcentury, fly, float, balloons, hot-air balloon, April 1783, airships, September 1852, aeroplane.Section Two Listening ComprehensionPart 1 DialogueBuying a CarB: Yes, I'm interested in buying a car.A: Have you anything in mind?B: Not really.A: What price are you thinking of?B: Not more than £13,500.A: Let's see now ... Over there between the Lancia and the Volvo is a Mini. It costs £12,830 and is cheap to run: It does 38 miles per gallon. Or there's the Citroen, behind the Mini. It costs £12,070 and is even cheaper to run than the Mini: It does 45 miles per gallon. It's not very fast though. It only does 69 miles per hour.B: No, I think the Mini and the Citroen are too small. I've got three children.Isn't there anything bigger at that price?A: Well, there's the Toyota over there, to the left of the Peugeot. It's very comfortable and costs £13,040. It's cheap to run too, and it also has a built-in radio. Or there's the Renault at the back of the showroom, behind the Peugeot. It costs a little more,£13,240, but it is cheaper to run. It does 40 miles per gallon and the Toyota only does 36 miles per gallon.B: What about that Volkswagen over there, in front of the Toyota?A: That costs a little more than £13,500 but it's a very reliable car. It's more expensive to run than the others: It does 34 miles per gallon, but it's faster. Its top speed is 90 miles per hour. The Toyota's is 80 miles per hour and the Renault's is 82 miles per hour.B: How much does it cost?A: £13,630 and that includes a 5-year guarantee.B: And the Fiat next to the Volkswagen?A: Again that's more than £13,500, but it's cheaper than the Volkswagen. It costs £13,550.B: Hmm well, I'll have to think about it and study these pamphlets. How much is that Peugeot incidentally, behind the Lancia? A: Oh, that's expensive. It costs £15,190.B: Yes, that is a bit too much. Thank you very much for your help. Goodbye.Part 2 PassageThe Wrights’ StoryOn the morning of December 17, 1903, between 10:30 a.m. and noon, four flights were made, two by Orville Wright and two by Wilbur Wright. The starts were all made from a point on the level sand about 200 feet west of our camp, which is located a quarter of a mile north of the Kill Devil sand hill, in Dare County, North Carolina. The wind at the time of the flights had a velocity* of 27 miles an hour at 10 a.m., and 24 miles an hour at noon, as recorded by the anemometer* at the Kitty Hawk Weather Bureau Station. The flights were directly against the wind. Each time the machine started from the level ground by its own power alone with no assistance from gravity or any other source whatever. After a run of about 40 feet along a monorail* track, which held the machine 8 inches (20 centimeters) from the ground, it rose from the track and under the direction of the operator climbed upward on an inclined course till a height of 8 or 10 feet from the ground was reached, after which the course was kept as near horizontal as the wind gusts and the limited skill of the operator would permit.Into the teeth of a December gale(逆风)the "Flyer" made its way forward with a speed of 10 miles an hour over the ground and 30 to 35 miles an hour through the air.It had previously been decided that for reasons of personal safety these first trials should be made as close to the ground as possible. The height chosen was sufficient for maneuvering* in so gusty a wind and with no previous acquaintance with the conduct of the machine and its controlling mechanisms. Consequently the first flight was short. The succeeding flights rapidly increased in length, and at the fourth trial a flight of 59 seconds was made, in which time the machine flew a little more than half a mile through the air and a distance of 852 feet over the ground. The landing was due to a slight error of judgment on the part of the aviator. After passing over a little hummock* of sand, in attempting to bring the machine down to the desired height, the operator turned the rudder* too far, and the machine turned downward more quickly than had been expected. The reverse movement of the rudder was a fraction of a second(转瞬间,顷刻) too late to prevent the machine from touching the ground and thus ending the flight. As winter was already well set in, we should have postponed the trials to a more favorable season, but we were determinedto know whether the machine possessed sufficient power to fly, sufficient strength to withstand the shocks of landings and sufficient capacity of control to make flight safe in boisterous* winds, as well as in calm air.Exercise A Pre-listening QuestionOrville Wright (1871-1948), American aeronautical engineer, famous for his role in the first controlled, powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine and for his participation in the design of the aircraft's control system. Wright worked closely with his brother, Wilbur Wright (1867-1912), American aeronautical engineer, in designing and flying the Wright airplane.During the years 1900, 1901, 1902, and 1903, the two brothers developed the firsteffective airplane. At Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, Orville Wright made the first successful flight of a piloted, heavier-than-air, self-propelled craft, called the Flyer. The third Flyer, which the Wrights constructed in 1905, was the world's first fully practical airplane. It could bank, turn, circle, make figure eights, and remain in the air for as long as the fuel lasted, up to half an hour on occasion.Exercise B Sentence DictationDirections: Listen to some sentences and write them down. You will hear each sentence three times.1.On the morning of December 17, 1903, between 10:30 a.m. and noon, fourflights were made, two by Orville Wright and two by Wilbur Wright.2.Under the direction of the operator it climbed upward on an inclined coursetill a height of 8 or 10 feet from the ground was reached.3.Into the teeth of a December gale the "Flyer" made its way forward with aspeed of 10 miles an hour over the ground and 30 to 35 miles an hour through the air.4.The height chosen was sufficient for maneuvering in so gusty a wind and withno previous acquaintance with the conduct of the machine and its controlling mechanisms.5 .In attempting to bring the machine down to the desired height, the operator turned the rudder too far, and the machine turned downward more quickly than had been expected.Exercise C Detailed ListeningDirections: Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.1.Four flights were made on the morning of December 17, 1903, two by OrvilleWright and two by Wilbur Wright.2.The wind at the time of the flights had a velocity of 27 miles an hour at 10a.m., and 24 miles an hour at noon, as recorded by the anemometer at theKitty Hawk Weather Bureau Station.3.Each time the machine started from the level ground by its own power alonewith no assistance from gravity or any other source whatever.4.The machine ran about 40 feet along a monorail track before it rose from thetrack.5.These first trials should be made as close to the ground as possible for reasonsof personal safety.6.The machine flew a little more than half a mile through the air in 59 secondsat the fourth trial.7.The early landing was due to a slight error of judgment on the part of theaviator.8.As winter was already well set in, it was not a favorable season for the trials. To get here, the Maryland Terrapins had to beat three teams with great basketball traditions: Kentucky, Connecticut and Kansas. Now they face another, Indiana. While Maryland was one of the four top seeds in this 65-team tournament, the Indiana Hoosiers* were a fifth seed, and virtually no one expected them to reach the title game*. But they knocked off defending champion Duke in the third round, and in the semifinals they upset Oklahoma.Maryland coach Gary Williams knows it will take a solid effort to win. "Any team that's gotten to where Indiana has gotten, you don't look at their record. You look at how they're playing now, how they play. Any time a team plays team defense like they do, they have a chance to beat anybody. That's what concerns me the most, their ability to play together as a unit, because a lot of times you can play with anybody when you play that close together like they do."Indiana has 27 wins and 11 defeats this season. The last time a team won the national championship with as many as 11 losses was Kansas in 1988. Maryland has a school record of 31 wins against only 4 losses. He would keep his dirigible tied to a gas lamp post in front of his Parisapartment and during the day he'd fly to go shopping or to visit friends.2. Since his was the first public flight in the world, he was hailed as theinventor of the airplane all over Europe.3. But to bring up the Wright brothers with a Brazilian is bound to elicit anavalanche of arguments as to why their flight didn't count.4. His flight did meet the criteria: He took off unassisted, publicly flew apredetermined length and then landed safely.5. By the time the Brazilian got around to(开始考虑做) his maiden flightthe Wright brothers had already flown numerous times, including oneflight in which they flew 39 kilometers.Ask anyone in Brazil who invented the airplane, and they will say Alberto Santos-Dumont, a bon vivant as well-known for his aerial prowess as he was for his dandyish* dress and place in the high-society life of Belle Epoque Paris. As Paul Hoffman recounts in his biography Wings of Madness, the eccentric* Brazilian was the only person in his day to own a flying machine."He would keep his dirigible* tied to a gas lamp post in front of his Paris apartment at the Champs Elysees, and every night he would fly to Maxim's for dinner. During the day he'd fly to go shopping or to visit friends," Hoffman said.It was on November 12, 1906, when Santos-Dumont flew a kite-like contraption* with boxy wings called the 14-Bis some 220 meters on the outskirts of Paris. Since his was the first public flight in the world, he was hailed as the inventor of the airplane all over Europe. It was only later that Orville and Wilbur Wright proved they had beaten Santos-Dumont at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, three years earlier. But to bring up the Wright brothers with a Brazilian is bound to elicit* an avalanche of arguments as to why their flight didn't count."It's one of the biggest frauds* in history," scoffs Wagner Diogo, a taxi driver in Rio de Janeiro."No one saw it, and they used a catapult* to launch the airplane."The debate centers on the definition of flight.Henrique Lins de Barros, a Brazilian physicist and Santos-Dumont expert, argues that the Wright brothers' flight did not fulfill the conditions that had been set up at the time to distinguish a true flight from a prolonged hop.Santos-Dumont's flight did meet the criteria: He took off unassisted, publicly flew a predetermined length and then landed safely."If we understand what the criteria were at the end of the 19th century, the Wright brothers simply did not fill any of the prerequisites," said Lins de Barros.Brazilians claim that the Wrights launched their Flyer in 1903 with acatapult or at an incline, disqualifying it from being a true airplane.Even Santos-Dumont experts like Lins de Barros concede* this is wrong. He says that the steady winds at Kitty Hawk were crucial for the Flyer's takeoff, disqualifying the flight because it probably could not lift off on its own.Peter Jakab, chairman of the aeronautics division at the US National Air and Space Museum in / Washington, says such claims are preposterous*.By the time Santos-Dumont got around to his maiden flight the Wright brothers had already flown numerous times, including one flight in which they flew 39 kilometers.Even in France the Wrights are considered to have flown beforeSantos-Dumont, says Claude Carlier, director of the French Center for the History of Aeronautics and Space.By rounding the Eiffel Tower in a motorized dirigible in .1901,Santos-Dumont helped prove that air travel could be controlled.Exercise A Pre-listening QuestionAlberto Santos-Dumont was a wealthy Brazilian aviation pioneer who came to Paris, France, at the age of 18 to live and study. He attempted his first balloon ascent in 1897 and had his first successful ascent in 1898. He began to construct dirigible airships powered with gasoline-powered engines in 1898 and built and flew fourteen of the small dirigibles. In 1901, he flew his hydrogen-filled airship from St. Cloud, around the Eiffel Tower, and back to St. Cloud. It was the first such flight and won him the Deutsch Prize and a prize from the Brazilian government. In 1902, he attempted to cross the Mediterranean in an airship but crashed into the sea. In 1909, he produced his "Demoiselle" or "Grasshopper" monoplane, the precursor to the modern light plane.Exercise B Sentence DictationDirections: Listen to some sentences and write them down. Package Holidays (1993)Package holidays, covering a two weeks' stay in an attractive place, are increasingly popular. Once you get to the airport, it is up to the tour operator to see that you get safely to your destination.Everything is laid on for you. There is, in fact, no reason for you to bother to arrange anything yourselves. You make friends and have a good time. But there is very little chance that you will really get to know the local people. This is even less likely on a coach tour, when you spend almost your entire time traveling.Of course, there are carefully planned stops for you to visit historic buildings and monuments. You may visit the beautiful, the historic, the ancient. But time is always short. There is also the added disadvantage of being obliged to spend you holiday with a group of people you have never met before. The American Family (1994)The American family unit is changing. There used to be mainly two types of families, the extended and the nuclear. The former included mother, father, children, and some other relatives such as grandparents, living in the same house or nearby. Then as the economy progressed from agricultural to industrial, people began moving to different parts of the country in order to search for job opportunities. These moves split up the extended family. The nuclear family consisting of only parents and children has therefore become far more wide spread. Today’s family, however, can be composed of diverse combinations. With the divorce rate nearly one in two, there's an increase in single-parent homes—a father or mother living with one or more children. Blended families occur when divorced men and women remarry and combine the children from former marriages into a new family. On the other hand, there is an increase in childless couples while one in rive Americans lives alone.Unidentified Flying Objects (1995)There are many explanations for why UFOs visit the Earth. / The most popular one is that they maybe visitors from other planets./ To fly such aircraft, their builders must develop different forms of aviation,/because they seem to fly much faster than normal aircraft./ The UFOs, it is believed, must contain scientists/ from other planets who are studying life on earth./ It is even believed that several such aircraft may have landed on earth/ and the space visitors may be living amongst us./ But there are also less fantastic explanations available./ Although some sightings of UFOs are difficult to explain, most can be explained quite easily./ In many cases the observers might have made a mistake./ They might have seen a weather balloon or an aircraft./ Or the light they saw in the sky might have been light from the ground,/ reflected on to the clouds./ However, the exact cause of many sightings still remained a mystery. The Indian Medicine Man (1996)Among the Indians of North America, the medicine man was a very important person. He could cure illness and he could speak to the spirits. The spirits were the supernatural forces thatcontrolled the world. The Indians believed that bad spirits made people ill. So when people were ill, the medicine man tried to help them by using magic. He spoke to the good spirits and asked for their help. Many people were cured, because they thought the spirits were helping them, but really these people cured themselves. Sometimes your own mind is the best doctor for you. The medicine men were often successful for another reason, too. They knew about plants that really can cure illness. A lot of medicines are made from the plants that were used by medicine men hundred of years ago.Legal Age for Marriage (1997)Throughout the United States, the legal age for marriage shows some difference. The most common age without parents’ consent is 18 for both females and males. However, persons who are under age in their home state can get married in another state, and then return to the home state legally married. Each state issues its own marriage license. Both residents and non-residents are qualified for such a license. The fees and ceremonies vary greatly from state to state. Most states, for instance, have a blood test requirement, but a few do not. Most states permit either a civil or religious ceremony, but a few require the ceremony to be religious. In most states a waiting period is required before the license is issued. This period is from one to five days depending on the state.A three-day-wait is the most common. In some states there is no required waiting period. The Railways in Britain (1998)The success of early railways, such as the lines between big cities,/ led to a great increase in railway building in Victorian times. / Between 1835 and 1865 about 25000 kilometers of track were built,/ and over 100 railway companies were created. /Railway travel transformed people's lives. / Trains were first designed to carry goods. / However, a law in the 19th century forced railway companies to run one cheap train a day / which stopped at every station and cost only a penny a mile. / Soon working class passengers found they could afford to travel by rail. / Cheap day excursion trains became popular and seaside resorts grew rapidly. / The railways also provided thousands of new jobs:/ building carriages, running the railways and repairing the tracks. / Railways even changed the time. / The need to run the railways on time meant that local time was abolished/ and clocks showed the same time all over the country. /United Nations Day (1999)The 24th of October is celebrated as United Nations Day. h is a day that belongs to everyone. And it is celebrated in most countries of the world. Some countries celebrate for a week instead of a day. In many parts of the world, schools have special programs for the day. Boys and girls in some communities decorate a UN tree. In other communities, young people put on plays about the UN.Some libraries exhibit children’s art works from around the world. Schools celebrate with the songs and dances of other countries or give parties where foods of other countries are served. No matter how the day is celebrated, the purpose of these celebrations is to help everyone understand the UN, and the important roles it plays in world affairs. The UN encourages people to learn about other lands and their customs. In this way, people can gain a better understanding and appreciation of peoples all over the world. What We Know About Language (2000)Many things about language are a mystery and will remain so. However, we now do know something about it. First, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. No human race anywhere on earth is so backward that it has no language of its own at all. Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many peoples whose cultures are undeveloped but the languages they speak are by no means primitive. In all the languages existing in the world today, there are complexities that must have been developed for years. Third, we know that all languages are perfectly adequate. Each is a perfect means of expressing its culture. And finally, we know that language changes over time, which is natural and normal if a language is to survive. The language which remains unchanged is nothing but dead.Characteristics of A Good Reader (2001)To improve your reading habits, you must understand the characteristics of a good reader. First, the good reader usually reads rapidly. Of course, he does not read every piece of material at the same rate. But whether he is reading a newspaper or a chapter in a physics text, his reading rate is relatively fast. He has learned to read for ideas rather than words one at a time. Next, the good reader can recognize and understand general ideas and specific details. Thus he is able to comprehend the material with a minimum of effort and a maximum of interest. Finally, the good reader has in his command several special skills, which he can apply to reading problems as they occur. For the college student, the most helpful of these skills include making use of the various aids to understanding that most text books provide and skim-reading for a general survey.Disappearing Forests (2002)The world’s forests are disappearing. As much as 1/3 of the total tree cover has been lost since agriculture began some 10,000 years ago. The remaining forests are home to half of the world’s species, thus becoming the chief resource for their survival. Tropical rain forests once covered 12% of the land of the planet, as well as supporting at l east half of the world’s species of plants and animals. These rain forests are home to millions of people. But there are other demands on them. For example, much has been cut for timber. An increasing amount of forest land has been used for industrial purposes or for agricultural development such as crop-growing. By the 1990’s less than half of the earth’s original rain forests remained, and they continued to disappear at an alarming rate every year. As a result the world’s forests are now facing gradual ex tinction.Salmon (2003)Every year, millions of salmon swim from the ocean into the mouths of rivers and then steadily up the rivers. Passing through waters, around rocks and waterfalls, the fish finally reach their original streams or lakes. They dig out nests in the riverbed and lay their eggs. Then, exhausted by their journey, the parent salmon die. They have finished the task that nature has given them. Months, or years later, the young fish start their trip to the ocean. They live in the salt water from 2-7 years, until they, too are ready to swim back to reproduce. Their life cycle helps man provide himself with a basic food-fish. When the adult salmon gather at the river mouths for the annual trip up the rivers, they are in the best possible condition, and nearly every harbor has its salmon fishing fleet ready to catch thousands for markets.Money (2004)Money is accepted across the world as payment for goods or services. People use money to buy food, clothes and hundreds of other things. In the past, many different things were used as money. People on Pacific islands once exchanged shells for goods. The Chinese used cloth and knives. In Africa, elephant tusks or salt were used. Even today, some people in Africa are still paid in salt. Coins were first invented by the Chinese. Originally, they were round pieces of metal with a hole in the center, so that a piece of string could keep them together. This made doing business much easier, but people still found coins inconvenient to carry when they wanted to buy something expensive. To solve this problem, the Chinese again came up with the solution. They began to use paper money for coins. Now paper notes are used throughout the world. The Wrist Watch (2005)It is generally believed that wrist watches are an exception / to the normal sequence in the evolution of man's jewelry. / Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women, / and then adopted by men. / In the old days, queens included wrist watches among their crown jewelry. / Later, they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. / Until World War I, Americans associated the watch with fortune hunters. / Then army officers discovered that the wrist watch was most practical for active combat. / Race car drivers also loved to wear wrist watches, / and pilots found them most useful while flying. / Soon men dared to wear wrist watches without feeling self-conscious. / By 1924, some 30 percent of man's watches were worn on the wrist. / Today, the figure is 90 percent. / And they are now worn by both men and women / for practical purposes rather than for decoration. The Internet (2006)The Internet is the most significant progress in the field of communications. / Imagine a book that never ends, a library with a million floors, / or imagine a research project with thousands of scientists / working around the clock forever. / This is the magic of the Internet. / Yet the Internet has the potential for good and bad. / One can find well-organized, information-rich websites. / At the same time, one can also find wasteful websites. / Most websites are known as different Internet applications. / These include online games, chat rooms (chatrooms) and so on. / These applications have great power, too. / Sometimes the power can be so great / that young people may easily become victims to their attraction. / So we need to recognize the seriousness of the problem. / We must work together to use its power for better ends.。

UNIT 6Section One Tactics for ListeningPart 1 Spot DictationWind and SpiritWe do notice the wind when it seems (1) cruel, when the trees turn away from it, and it (2) cuts into our hearts. "Certain winds will make men's (3) temper bad", said George Eliot. In Southern California, the Santa Ana is (4) associated with an increase in depression and domestic (5) violence.Scientists have tried (6)without success to identify physiological reasons for these (7) reactions. Everyone agrees, however, that (8)dry winds like the Santa Ana, the mistral in France and the foehn* in Germany and Switzerland seem to have (9) negative effects on our mental and physical (10) well-being.On windy days, playground fights, (11) suicides and heart failures are more (12) frequent. In Geneva, traffic accidents (13) increase when a wind called the bise* blows. At the (14) request of patients, some Swiss and German hospitals (15) postpone surgery during the foehn. It is human to ask what is (16) behind the wind. It is easy to personify the wind as the (17) breath of God. The act of taking wind into our lungs is what (18) gives us life. The Jews, Arabs, Romans and Greeks all took their word for (19) spirit from the word for wind. But our day-to-day lives are no longer (20 blown on the winds. We do notidentify wind with spirit anymore.Part 2 Listening for GistA cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10,000. One of the 66 passengers heard a strange "miaow" when the plane landed in Copenhagen. Mechanics arrived immediately and the airline company phoned for an animal ambulance. The mechanics found the cat after eight hours' work. It had got into the air-conditioning system in Nairobi. The plane was twelve hours late leaving for Tokyo, costing the company £10,000. The cat was quite well after its experience and was given a large bowl of milk and a plate of fish.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the passage and find its topic sentence. The topic sentence is "A cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10.000."Section TwoListening ComprehensionPart 1 DialogueWhat a Coincidence!Storyteller: Talking of coincidences, did I tell you about what happened to me andJeannie last holiday?Friend(s): No.Storyteller: We went on holiday in the States and we went to Mexico. Well, we were driving down to Mexico City. We were going to spend a few days in Palm Beach ... see the sea, look up an old friend, you know. As we left there we stopped at a garage for a car check ... oil, the water, the tires, all that ... petrol. And the mechanics spotted something. They said that our fuel pump was not working properly and it was quite serious ... it would cost a lot of money ... well, we were very worried.Friend(s): Were you insured?Storyteller: Well, no, we weren't and I didn't have that much money on me, you know. It was meant to be a cheap holiday. Well, just then, two men drove up and they said what's the problem? And, do you know? They were mechanics - it was such good luck. They looked at our car and they said, "There's nothing wrong with your car. Don't spend money on it. Just forget about it." Well, naturally, we were worried, but ... er, I thought ... I'll trust them, I think they're right. So, we drove on, we crossed the Mexican border and had a marvelous few days sightseeing there round Monterey. Friend(s):Oh, oh, brilliant ... jealous ...Storyteller: And then we went on and on to Mexico City. We drove about forty kilometers and then we saw a car with the same US number plates as the other car we'd seen in Palm Beach.Friend(s): You're joking!Storyteller: It was parked by the road, and the same two men who gave us the adviceabout our car were stuck with their car.Friend(s): Oh, no!Storyteller: So, we stopped and asked them what was wrong. And do you know? Their car had broken down for exactly the same reason: The fuel pump wasn't working! It was quite extraordinary.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the dialogue and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)l. T 2.T 3.F 4.F 5.T 6.F 7.T 8.FPart 2 PassageCorporate Culture1.How well the employee "fits" the culture can make the difference betweenjob-search success and failure.2.It guides how employees think, act, and feel.3.The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers is part of the corporate culture.4.The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months.5.It should be a place where you can have a voice, be respected, and have opportunities for growth. Why should jobseekers care about a potential employer's corporate culture? Aren't there more important factors to consider, such as the job itself, salary and bonuses, and fringe benefits〔附加福利〕? These factors are indeed important, but increasingly career experts are talking about the importance of employee-employer fit in terms of culture, with the idea that how well the employee "fits" the culture can make the difference between job-search success and failure. What is corporate culture? At its most basic, it's described as the personality of an organization, or simply as "how things are done around here". It guides how employees think, act, and feel. Corporate culture is a broad term〔广义的术语〕used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics〔企业伦理,公司道德〕, and rules of behavior. Corporate culture can be expressed in the company's mission statement〔宗旨〕and other communications, in the architectural style or interior decoration of offices, by what people wear to work, by how people address each other, and in the titles given to various employees. How does a company's culture affect you? In many, many ways. For instance: •The hours you work per day, per week, including options such as flextime and telecommuting.•The work environment, including how employees interact, the degree of competition, and whether it's a fun or hostile environment - or somethingin-between.•The dress code, including the accepted styles of attire* and things such as casual days.•The office space you get, including things such as cubicles*, window offices, and rules regarding display of personal items.•The training and skills development you receive, which you need both on the job and to keep yourself marketable for future jobs and employers.•Onsite perks〔特别的待遇〕, such as break rooms, gyms and play rooms, daycare facilities, and more.•The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers.•Interaction with other employees, including managers and top management. How do you uncover the corporate culture of a potential employer? The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months, but you can get close to it through research and observation. Understanding culture is a two-step process, starting with research before the interview and ending with observation at the interview. If you get a chance to meet with other employees, you can ask some questions to try and get a handle on an organization's corporate culture. Such as:•What's it really like to work here?•What skills and characteristics does the company value?•How do people get promoted around here?•The bottom line is that you are going to spend a lot of time in the work environment ---and to be happy, successful and productive, you’ll want to bein a place where you fit the culture, a place where you can have a voice, berespected and have opportunity for growth.A:Pre-listening QuestionMany articles and books have been written in recent years about culture in organizations, usually referred to as "Corporate Culture". The dictionary defines culture as "the act of developing intellectual and moral faculties, especially through education". Some people define it as "the moral, social, and behavioral norms of an organization based on the beliefs, attitudes, and priorities of its members".Every organization has its own unique culture or value set. Most organizations don't consciously try to create a certain culture. The culture of the organization is typically created unconsciously, based on the values of the top management or the founders of an organization.B:Sentence DictationDirections: Listen to some sentences and write them down. But the top U.S. military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, told ABC's Good Morning America television program Tuesday the taking and rescue of the American cargo ship captain led him to order a new effort to find ways to effectively deal with the pirates.Admiral Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates say there is no purely military solution to the Somali piracy problem. Piracy continues to rise, even as navy ships from 16 nations patrol the area. And Gates said Monday that the problem is "probably going to get worse" until the international community can, in his words, "get something on land that begins to change the equation" for the "incredible number of poor people" in Somalia, some of whom turn to piracy.Efforts by some ship owners to secure their ships have had some success. They have installed barbed wire, removed ladders and changed their routes, among othersteps. But there has been resistance to proposals to put armed guards on commercial ships.Corporations have paid tens of millions of dollars for the safe return of ships and their crews in the area in recent years. Last year, there were 111 piracy incidents in the region, triple the number the previous year. Salehi is Iran's former envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency and signed a protocol allowing for freer inspections of Iran's nuclear sites. His appointment appears to be something of a gesture to the U.S.Neither the U.S., nor the other members of the so-called Group of five-plus-one, including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, plus Germany, however, is likely to agree with Salehi about the closure of Tehran's nuclear file.U.S. President Barack Obama warned Tehran, during the G-8 summit in Italy, that the world is giving it until September to comply with U.N. resolutions over its controversial nuclear program.Iran has persistently refused to stop enriching uranium, and the West fears that it will use highly enriched uranium to build atomic weapons. The Iranian government, however, continues to insist that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful, civilian purposes, alone.Iran analyst Meir Javedanfar of the MEEPAS (Middle East Economic and Political Analysis) center in Tel Aviv argues that Tehran is hardening its position over its nuclear dossier, in response to Western criticism over its violent crackdown against its own people following the June 12 presidential elections.Javedanfar, however, believes that those who are seeking a compromise with Iran should not despair completely, because Iranian leaders are pragmatists, and may at the end of the day be ready for an agreement.Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki said one week ago that Tehran was preparing to present a "new package" of proposals, concerning what he called "international, security and political issues," to the West for talks.Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also warned the West that Tehran would weigh their criticism over its crackdown on protesters following the June 12 election, in assessing future relations with their countries.A: Directions: Listen to the radio program and complete the summary. This news report is about Salehi’s and the Iranian government’s attitude towards nuclear case.B: Directions: Listen to the program again and complete the following sentences.Iranian Nuclear energy Chief1.The so-called Group of five-plus-one are not likely to agree with Salehi about theclosure of Tehran’s nuclear file.2.U.S. president Barak Obama warned Tehran that the world is giving it untilSeptember to comply with U.N. resolutions over its controversial nuclear program during the G-8 summit in Italy.3.Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki said one week ago that Tehran waspreparing to present a "new package" of proposals, concerning what he called "international, security and political issues," to the West for talks.Part 2 PassageGlobalization1)The World Trade Organization is among the most powerful, and one of the mostsecretive international bodies on earth.2)Globalization is not a phenomenon. It is not just some passing trend.3)Used properly, fire can cook food, sterilize equipment, form iron, and heat ourhomes. Used carelessly, it can destroy lives, towns and forests in an instant.4)Globalization has dangers and an ugly dark side. But it can also bring tremendousopportunities and benefits.5)They will see globalization not as something to worship or demonize. Instead, theywill see it as something to mold, shape and manage for the betterment of everyone.Globalization is the present worldwide drive toward a globalized economic system dominated by supranational* corporate trade and banking institutions that are not accountable to democratic processes or national governments. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is among the most powerful, and one of the most secretive international bodies on earth. It is rapidly assuming the role of global government, as 134 nation-states, including the US, have ceded* to its vast authority and powers. The WTO represents the rules-based regime of the policy of economic globalization. The central operating principle of the WTO is that commercial interests should supersede* all others. Any obstacles in the path of operations and expansion of global business enterprise must be subordinated. In practice these "obstacles" are usually policies or democratic processes that act on behalf of working people, labor rights, environmental protection, human rights, consumer rights, social justice, local culture, and national sovereignty.Globalization is not a phenomenon. It is not just some passing trend. Today it isan overarching international system shaping the domestic politics and foreign relations of virtually every country, and we need to understand it as such.As thoughtful people concerned about world affairs, our job is to pick up "globalization", examine it from all sides, dissect* it, figure out what makes it tick, and then nurture and promote the good parts and mitigate* or slow down the bad parts. Globalization is much like fire.Fire itself is neither good nor bad. Used properly, it can cook food, sterilize equipment, form iron, and heat our homes. Used carelessly, fire can destroy lives, towns and forests in an instant. As Friedman* says:"Globalization can be incredibly empowering and incredibly coercive*. It can democratize opportunity and democratize panic. It makes the whales bigger and the minnows* stronger. It leaves you behind faster and faster, and it catches up to you faster and faster. While it is homogenizing* cultures, it is also enabling people to share their unique individuality farther and wider."Globalization has dangers and an ugly dark side. But it can also bring tremendous opportunities and benefits. Just as capitalism requires a network of governing systems to keep it from devouring societies, globalization requires vigilance and the rule of law.Antitrust laws, the Securities and Exchange Commission, labor unions, charities, the Federal Trade Commission, and countless other agencies and organizations keep American capitalism in check. Similar transparent mechanisms are needed to make sure globalization is a positive force in the world.Globalization will always have cheerleaders who are blind to the destruction globalization can cause. And it will always have strident* opponents blind to the way globalization gives some people their first opportunity to fulfill basic aspirations. As with most issues, the majority of people will be in the middle. They will see globalization not as something to worship or demonize. Instead, they will see it as something to mold, shape and manage for the betterment of everyone.Exercise D After-listening DiscussionDirections: Listen to the passage again and discuss the following questions.1. Milton Friedman says, "Globalization can be incredibly empowering and incredibly coercive. It can democratize opportunity and democratize panic. It makes the whales bigger and the minnows stronger. It leaves you behind faster and faster, and it catches up to you faster and faster. While it is homogenizing cultures, it is also enabling people to share their unique individuality farther and wider."[此文档可自行编辑修改,如有侵权请告知删除,感谢您的支持,我们会努力把内容做得更好]。

Unit1Transcript Lesson One Audio StudioClip 1Melting Polar IceThe latest evidence comes from opposite ends of our planet, but the story it tells is thesame. At the North Pole, new satellite photos show Arctic ice is melting so fast, many scientists now predict it will be gone within 30 years. Some researchers think it could disappear in just six. At the South Pole, an ice shelf the size of Connecticut is in danger of melting because theice bridge that held it in place has shattered. It’s one of ten ice shelves that have shrunk or collapsed in the past 50 years. Some were 10,000 years old. Polar ice works as the earth’s airconditioner. Without it, there could be a snowball effect with temperatures rising even faster. Governments all around the world have to take the lead in solving this crisis, but eachof us has to do our part to reduce greenhouse gasses. If we all don’t take bold action — and take it soon — we will all find ourselves on very thin ice. So who’s paying the price for all these global warming impacts It might seem likeinsurers are most at risk. Indeed, insurers did pay out some $33 billion in climate-related damages last year in the U.S. alone. But it turns out that bearing the brunt of climate change costs is you, the taxpayer. A new analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the NRDC, finds that the federal government spent three times more than the private insurance industry on climate change impacts last year. And, of course, those federal efforts are entirely funded by taxpayers.“It is in effect a climate disruption tax, equivalent to a 2.7 percentage point increase in what Americans paid in sales taxes last year.” That's Daniel Lashof, director of the NRDC's Climateand Clean Air Program and co-author of the report. We spent nearly $100 billion in 2012 on drought-related crop insurance, storms like Hurricane Sandy, floods and wildfires. By comparison the nation spent $95 billion on education last year and just $91 billion on transportation. Greenhouse gas pollution shows no signs of slowing, recently touching 400 parts-per-million. The key is making small simple changes in your daily life. Then multiply that by the millions of us, and we’ve got real results in the long run. Install aprogrammable thermostat that adjusts itself when you are not at home so you are not cooling or heating an empty house. If every home in America did this, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would be the same as taking six millions cars off the road. Next, wash your clothes in cold water instead of hot. Look for appliances that have been given the energy star seal of approval by the EPA. These models use ten to fifty percent less energy than standard models. Buy fresh foods whenever possible. Frozen foods use ten times the energy to produce and get to the supermarket. Finally, head to your home improvement store and pick up an insulation blanket. The University of Houston is looking at how can we lead in sustainability worldwide. What does that really mean So, leadership for sustainability is about building relationships, about heightening dialogue, heightening our critical thinking, really talking about the needy issues. The efforts are educational, like turning the eighty-eight solar panels donated through a grant from Green Mountain Energy into a learning opportunity for engineering students as well as enriching, such as the community garden tended by students.“We grow produce that we then donate to local food pantry and students are the primary volunteers for this garden. It’s really close by to where we live and it’s kind of important for us to give back to literally the local community in which we are living and that’s part of the idea about sustainability. But now scientists are studying infants to try to understand if we are inherently good or bad. Yale University researchers working with infant children have had some interesting results. They staged a puppet show in which one puppet is trying to go uphill but keeps falling back down. Two more puppets appear; one that wants to help the first figure up the hill and another that is trying to push them back down. What the researchers found was that after the puppet show, when given the choice, the infants reach down for the puppet that tries to help the other one push uphill rather than the other one who is trying to push them both back down. In another study the same researchers introduced a neutral character thatdidn’t try to help or hinder the work. The infants still chose the helper over the neutralcharacter but also chose the neutral character over the one trying to hinder the progress. Scientists think this means that even infants with no language abilities can identify with motivations and are prone to like things that help them achieve rather than things that try to hold them back.Task 1 Note-taking1) Two 2) Infant children 3) Two puppet shows 4) reach down for the puppet they like 5) the helper 6) the neutral character 7) the neutral character 8) trying to hinder the progress 9) infants 10) language abilities 11) help them achieve 12) hold them backTask 2 Dictation1) stage 2) falling 3) appear 4) push 5) found 6) reachClip 2 Nature vs. Nurture-parent InfluenceWe are all born with certain physical characteristics determined by our genes, but does our DNA dictate how we act William R. Clark: Genes may very well determine how we behave in given situations.Dr. Dean Edell: Researchers say they are learning now that genes help control how we interpret our environment. Steven Pinker: There has to be some kind of innate circuitry in place that allows us to create culture and acquire culture and do the learning. Dr. Dean Edell: But can environment influence which genes are triggered David Moore: What really matters is which genes are turned on and which genes are turned off, and different genes are turned on and off in different circumstances. Dr. Dean Edell: That leaves to debate over the role parents play in influencing their children. Steven Pinker: Parents aren't the only aspect of the environment; there is also the surrounding culture. Dr. Dean Edell: Some believe the stronger social influences happen outside the home. Judith Rich Harris: Children live in separate worlds and each world is very important, but there is very little carry-over from one world to the other, and what is carried over is whatever is genetic. Dr. Dean Edell: Controversial author, Judith Rich, says how well a child turns out is up to the child, not the parent. Others find that troubling. Stanley Greenspan: We encourage parents to be either passive or hopeless or helpless in the face of certain challenges that they would assume were genetic. Male Speaker: As the debate rages, what's clear is that as scientists study DNA, they are learning more about ways to fight disease and perhaps understand better what makes us tick. You can help keep your brain young with somesimple lifestyle changes such as: moderate amount of exercise, eating well, managing your stress. Exercising three to five times a week increases blood flow to the brain which keeps it working smarter and reduces the risks of mini strokes ( transient ischemic attack 短暂性缺血发作). It’s fairly common when we see someone with early memory troubles we’ll see acertain degree of mini strokes that have occurred over time. Healthy eating will alsodecrease stroke risk. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fish and walnuts are very important for brain health. It seems that people who eat a lot of fish and sea food tend to have a healthier brain aging overall. As to those eat a plant-based diet and reducing the stress through meditation also helps keep our brains younger longer. Significant stress causes brain changes that can lead to memory loss. Doctor Hu says mediators tend to have better bloodflow to the brain’s frontal cortex — the area where one must use to stay sharp andmulti-task and make accurate decisions. So if you want to stay smarter longer, take steps now to improve your lifestyle by exercising, eating right and meditating. For today’s health minute, I am Susan Hendricks.Task 1 Note-taking1) Moderate amount of exercise 2) Working smarter and reduces the risks of mini strokes 3) Eating well 4) Very important for brain health 5) Managing your stress 6) Brain changes that can lead to memory loss.Task 2 Short Answer Questions1. Nature nurtures creativity. Disconnecting from our digital devices seems to become more difficult every day. But there is now one more reasonto take a vacation in the great outdoors. A new study finds spending time with nature is good for your mind. It even improves problem-solving abilities and creativity by fifty percent. Researchers looked at fifty six people with an average age of 28 and split them into two groups. The first took a creativity test before a backpacking trip, and the second took on the fourth day of the trip. Those who took it before had an average score of about 4. And those who took it on the fourth day scored just about 6. The second group was not only more creative, but also better at problem solving. Researchers cannot say whether the improvements were due to more nature, less technology or both. But they say extended periods in front of a computer likely has cognitive costs, and going for a hike could help reverse them. It may also be more crucial now than ever. Recent data show young people spend just 20 minutes a day playing outside and almost eight hours a day using cell phones, TVs and computers. So next time you are agonizing over your computer screen, consider stepping outside instead, and let nature nurture your mind. As you know our Bill Leer traveled more than 5000 miles across China to bring us an unprecedented look at all the different ways the country is affecting nearly every part of our lives this morning. And what every American worker needs to know about China, about their jobs is the subject of Bill’s. “Well we are in our Good Morning America bedroom this morning as many viewers of you are getting ready for your day here. Your day started thanks to China, because 80 percent of the clocks in this country are made in China.”“80 percent”“80 percent of the clocks are made in China. When the Chinese start dumping bedroom sets in America, a third of American wooden furniture manufacturers lost theirjobs. Chinese not only invented the toothbrush, they probably made yours, and your coffee maker and your towels. When they slashed sock prices a few years ago, a third of American sock manufacturers went out of business. And the shoes, these Nikes, brand-new, pretty nice, $74, right. The question is what would they cost if they were made in America So to find out and to find out how many other American jobs are in danger because of all this low price stuff. Lining is sort of the Chinese Nike, as you can see, the Chinese AirJordan.LiNing is also a man, he is a China’s most famous Olympic athlete if you watched the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games. You’ll remember him lighting the torch high above the stadium. You know what’s interesting is LiNing basically represents sort ofthe innovation and luxury model for China, which is basically brought in American designers. LiNing has tremendous name recognition already in China. He had support from the state. He has tremendous resources at his advantage, and basically he went up against Adidas and Nike, and in last year or so he has gotten crushed. He hit what some have called the bamboo ceiling. The idea that even Chinese consumers will not buy domestic brands when they have the opportunity to buy the foreign luxury brands. And so therefore LiNing is now struggling to reposition itself as more of a value commodity as something for people in the second and third tier cities, rather than as a luxury product. So it is easy, I think, for many of us to basically retreat into our default mindset, that once again China, excellent at manufacturing, excellent at efficiency, it can build the brand.Task 1 Note-taking1) the Chinese Nike and the Chinese Air Jordan. 2) lit the torch in the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games. 3) the sort of the innovation and luxury model for China 4) name recognition already 5) the state6) reposition himselfTask 2 Idea Box1) It refers to the idea that even Chinese consumers will not buy domestic brands when they have the opportunity to buy the foreign luxury brands. 2) open 3) openLesson Two Audio StudioClip 1 China Eyes Sophisticated Luxury GoodsAfter a market cultivating period since the end of last century to the beginning of this century, Chinese luxury goods market is gradually growing bigger, while western customers are tightening their belts as their economy remains mired in a sluggish recovery. The Chinesepublic’s appetite for high-end products has soared. China’s consumer luxury goods market isoutpacing every other luxury market in the world, with an estimated of growth of 23 percent in 2010. A rapidly expanding middle and upper class in China seek to enhance their identity and quality of life with luxury goods. Top-growth categories for luxury goods in China include: liquor (酒), fashion accessories and clothes, cars, jewelry and cosmetics. A report from theChinese Academy of Social Sciences says, “China will rank as the world’s largest market for luxury goods in 5 years’ time.” Over the past few years, China’s purchasing power for luxury goods has been growing at the pace of 20 percent annually. Right now, China’s largest groupof luxury goods consumers are between 20 and 30 yearsold, which means they have many consuming years still ahead of them, and the average age of Chinese high-end goods consumers is 15 years younger than the world average. As China becomes the fastest growing luxury goods market, it is not only attracting imported goods but western brands have also begun to design luxury goods to Chinese tastes. After all, we are talking about a huge population with a growing economy, not to mention relative isolation from the social unrest, financial trauma and natural disasters that have disturbedthe world’s other major markets. But there is a deeper connection, luxury brands thrive herebecause they operate in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. In much of the west, taste is defined as a having unique personal style. Be yourself. Follow your instincts. Ugly can bebeautiful. Street style can be elegant. Under this framework, the only sin is insincerity. That’sa horizontal market, which is great for creativity, but not so great for luxury. China is different. Thousands of years of rigid society have left a deep mark. People here acknowledge the difference between low and high. So taste is not knowing yourself, it requires improving yourself. This is not about just showing face, which means tacky bling, sure that happens. Spending on luxury demonstrates your values, your culture, your virtue, your knowledge. This is the vertical dimension. Nobody understands this like the French. It is why Louie Vuitton knows to stake out the biggest, most lavish retail space in a mall. It is whycognac outsells whiskey, even at night clubs blasting hip-hop. We’re still at early phases here. After decades of austerity, China is rediscovering its imperial routes. Great.Woman: Yes. I'm going to Shanghai on business. I have to buy some gifts.Man: Good idea. What are you going to take?Woman: I was thinking of bringing some handkerchiefs. They're colorful, beautiful? also lightweight. I don't want to carryanything heavy.Man: Ah, I don't think you should give handkerchiefs. They aren't a good gift in Chinese culture.Woman: Why not?Man: A handkerchief is a symbol of saying goodbye.Woman: Saying goodbye?Man: Yeah, like when you're going away ... and people are crying, so they need a handkerchief. Actually, I've heard that one of the best things to give is a dinner -- not a present, but a big dinner. It's good for business.Number 2: ArgentinaWoman: This is interesting. Did you know that in Argentina you should never give clothing unless you know the person really well?Man: Don't give clothing? Why not?Woman: Clothing -- even things like ties -- are too personal. Only good friends give them. Man: Huh? I never thought of a tie as being personal ... just uncomfortable. What should you bring?Woman: I don't know. Maybe something for the house.Number 3: SwitzerlandMan: We're meeting Mr. Mertz and his wife for dinner. Maybe I should take flowers or something ... Yeah, I'll pick up some red roses.Woman: You'd better not give them roses. In Switzerland, they could be a symbol of love and romance.Man: Oh, I didn't know that.Woman: I think candy or chocolate might be better.Number 4: ItalyWoman: I'd like some flowers. Uh ... those. About ten, I guess.Man: Ma'am, I don't think you should give ten flowers. In Italy, even numbers -- 2, 4, 6, andso on -- are bad luck.Woman: Even numbers are bad luck? OK, I'll take nine flowers then.Number 5: JapanWoman: May I help you?Man: I'm going to stay with a family in Japan. I need to get something for them.Woman: Pen sets are always a good gift.Man: Oh, that's a good idea. Let's see ... There are sets with a pen and pencil ... and bigger sets with four pens.Woman: You said you're going to Japan?Man: Yeah.Woman: Don't give a set of four pens -- in fact, don't give four of anything.Man: Why not?Woman: The Japanese word for "four" sounds like the word for "death." It's bad luck.Man: Thanks for telling me. I'll take the pen and pencil set.Woman: Good choice. These sets make very good gifts. After all, pens write in any language! Man: Uh ... yeah. "Certain winds will make men's (3) temper bad", said George Eliot. In Southern California, the Santa Ana is (4) associated with an increase in depression and domestic (5) violence.Scientists have tried (6) without success to identify physiological reasons for these (7) reactions. The act oftaking wind into our lungs is what (18) gives us life. The Jews, Arabs, Romans and Greeks all took their word for (19) spiritfrom the word for wind. But our day-to-day lives are no longer (20 blown on the winds. We do not identify wind with spirit anymore.Part 2 Listening for GistA cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10,000. The topic sentence is "A cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about£10.000."Section TwoListening ComprehensionPart 1 DialogueWhat a Coincidence!Storyteller: Talking of coincidences, did I tell you about what happened to me and Jeannie last holidayFriend(s): No.Storyteller: We went on holiday in the States and we went to Mexico. Well, we were driving down to Mexico City. We weregoing to spend a few days in Palm Beach ... see the sea, lookup an old friend, you know. As we left there we stopped at a garage for a car check ... oil, the water, the tires, allthat ... petrol. And the mechanics spotted something. They said that our fuel pump was not working properly and it was quite serious ... it would cost a lot of money ... well, we were very worried.Friend(s): Were you insuredStoryteller: Well, no, we weren't and I didn't have that much money on me, you know. It was meant to be a cheap holiday. Well, just then, two men drove up and they said what's the problem And, do you know They were mechanics - it was such good luck. They looked at our car and they said, "There's nothing wrongwith your car. Don't spend money on it. Just forget about it."Well, naturally, we were worried, but ... er, I thought ...I'll trust them, I think they're right. So, we drove on, we crossed the Mexican border and had a marvelous few days sightseeing there round Monterey.Friend(s):Oh, oh, brilliant ... jealous ...Storyteller: And then we went on and on to Mexico City. We drove about forty kilometers and then we saw a car with the same US number plates as the other car we'd seen in Palm Beach. Friend(s): You're joking!Storyteller: It was parked by the road, and the same two men who gave us the advice about our car were stuck with their car. Friend(s): Oh, no!Storyteller: So, we stopped and asked them what was wrong. And do you know Their car had broken down for exactly the same reason: The fuel pump wasn't working! It was quite extraordinary.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the dialogue and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)l. It guides how employees think, act, andfeel. Corporate culture is a broad term(广义的术语) used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics(企业伦理,公司道德), and rules of behavior. Corporate culture can be expressed in the company's mission statement(宗旨)and other communications, in the architectural style or interior decoration of offices, by what people wear to work, by how people address each other, and in the titles given to various employees. How does a company's culture affect you In many, many ways. For instance:The hours you work per day, per week, including optionssuch as flextime and telecommuting. The work environment, including how employees interact, the degree of competition, and whether it's a fun orhostile environment - or something in-between.The dress code, including the accepted styles of attire*and things such as casual days. The office space you get, including things such ascubicles*, window offices, and rules regarding display ofpersonal items. The training and skills development you receive, which youneed both on the job and to keep yourself marketable forfuture jobs and employers.Onsite perks(特别的待遇), such as break rooms, gyms andplay rooms, daycare facilities, and more. The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers.Interaction with other employees, including managers and top management. How do you uncover the corporate culture of a potential employer The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months, but you can get close to it through research and observation. Understanding culture is a two-step process, starting with research before the interview and ending with observation at the interview. If you get a chance to meet with other employees, you canask some questions to try and get a handle on an organization's corporate culture. Such as:What's it really like to work here? What skills and characteristics does the company valueHow do people get promoted around hereThe bottom line is that you are going to spend a lot oftime in the work environment ---and to be happy, successful and productive, you’ll want to be in a placewhere you fit the culture, a place where you can have avoice, be respect and have opportunity for growth.A:Pre-listening QuestionMany articles and books have been written in recent years about culture in organizations, usually referred to as "Corporate Culture". My mother used to sit by my side, and explain each paragraph of each school reading assignment to me because I didn't understand what I was reading. She would have to read each paragraph to me. And then after each paragraph, she told me the general meaning of what we just read.In class, I tried to hide the fact that I couldn't read. My teachers gave us the last ten minutes of class to start our reading homework, and I would sit there for ten minutes staring at the page, pretending I was reading it. I remember a terrible feeling of not wanting to get into trouble for not being able to understand. I had to wait until I got home so my mother could explain it to me. How did I ever get into Cornell University?By the 8th grade I started understanding a little on my own, but I was reading at a very slow speed. I got hold of all the speed-reading books I could get my hands on. I read them all very slowly at the time. I even went out and took a course on speed-reading. Then I developed my own way which was easier and produced quicker results. I started practicing these techniques every day, and as I started to read faster, my understanding increased. I found that I stopped daydreaming and thinking about other things while I was reading, and started getting the larger meaning. I was reading faster and comprehending better.I found that when you read slowly, word-by-word, you get lost in the words, lose the bigger picture, and your comprehension drops. When you read faster, your comprehension goes up because instead of getting lost in the words, you see the general picture.26. The main difficulty the writer had in reading in the 7th grade was that________________________.A. she often forgot her school reading assignmentsB. she had difficulty reading with comprehensionC. she had a poor vocabulary and very bad grammarD. she always looked elsewhere when asked to read27.
