12 Years a Slave
《为奴十二年》Twelve Years a Slave:臻美的图像传记)

Twelve Years a Slave is a memoir by Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South in 1841. The book was published in 1853 and became a bestseller, helping to galvanize the abolitionist movement in the United States.Northup was born free in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1808. He was a skilled carpenter and musician, and worked as a waiter and a hotel clerk. In 1841, he was approached by two men who offered him a job as a performer in a circus in Washington, D.C. Northup agreed, but once he arrived in Washington, he was drugged and sold into slavery.Northup was held captive for twelve years, during which time he was sold to several different owners in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was beaten, starved, and humiliated. In 1853, he finally escaped with the help of a whiteabolitionist.Northup's memoir is a vivid and harrowing account ofthe horrors of slavery. It is also a testament to his indomitable spirit and his determination to survive. Twelve Years a Slave has been praised as one of the most important works of American literature, and it continues to be read and studied today.

外刊时文--New film: "12 Years A Slave" 新片上映:《为奴十二年》New film: "12 Years A Slave" 新片上映:《为奴十二年》Jan 9th 2014 / the EconomistEARLY in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave”, a Louisiana plantation-owner returns home with the two slaves he’s just bought, a man and a woman. Waiting on the veranda, his genteel wife notices that the woman is crying, and asks why. “Separated from her children,” sighs the husband, not unsympathetically. “Can’t be helped.”
”Those last three words are the key to Mr McQueen’s devastating film, in that they, like so many other sequences, present slavery as the norm: long-established, legaland legitimized by scripture. To its mid-19th-century characters, there’s nothing unusual about keeping human beings asproperty, and no way that the institution can be changed. In the preceding scene, a jovial slave-trader (Paul Giamatti) is showing customers his wares. “This is a nigger of considerable talent,” he remarks, but there’s nothing in the way the line is spoken to suggest that anyone in the shop might be shocked. The trader sees his terrified, naked merchandise as no different from any other commodity.

100The movie 12 years a slave tells a story that a free black people named Solomon Northup, was cheated by two men and sold to slave state, spending 12 years being a slave.I think one critical thing is that Solomon has once enjoyed freedom and then lost it. It seems more unbearable for him than an inherent slave to accept the destiny. During this 12 years, he worked like other niggers. In the meanwhile, he kept pursuing freedom. Apparently, the black people who was born as slave lack the courage and thirst for escaping the situation. And that’s reason why niggers seldom resisted. Even if black people want to escape like what Solomon once did, they were either threatened or hanged by the slave owner. After recognizing that they may fail at the price of life, they flinched.Another important detail of this film is lie. At first, Solomon claimed to a man that he was a free man, and then he was whipped badly. His fellow warned him not to tell anybody who he was and the truth that he had the ability of reading and writing. Then in one scene, a trafficker called him Platte, which wasn’t his real name. So he corrected the trafficker, “My name is not Platte.” I suppose he still not accept the truth at that time. The trafficker interrupted him by slapping him. Then the trafficker insisted, “Your name is Platte.” A few years later, Solomon has got used to lying when asked where he came from and what his name was. He had become an excellent liar in order to survive. We can know that clearly because he could lie calmly when the slave owner questioned him if he had written a letter to Marksville. From this detail, we can also know that Solomon had gradually accepted the situation and actually he still not gave up struggling to be a free man in the meantime as he once told his fellow that he didn’t want to survive but to live. In the end of the film, Solomon finally told the sheriff his real name and got rescued. There is another thing that serve as a clue. That’s the violin. Solomon was good at playing violin and this ability brought him complements, pride and money. At the start of the film, Solomon accompanied for a dancing party. When the dance ended, the guests applauded for his brilliant performance. The second time he played violin was when the nigger trafficker sold niggers. The trafficker asked him to play violin to cover the cry of a female nigger who was separated from her children. Over the next several time, he was asked to play violin to joy masters and guests. This seems intangibly desperate and sad while comparing with his past situation. And the last time the violin appeared was when Solomon ruined it after forced by his master to whip a female nigger. He looked shame, helpless and desperate. What’s more, the sound of violin was frequently used as background music in this film. The sound of violin sounds happy when Solomon was a free man, and it sounds sad when he was a slave.More details can be found to show how excellent this film is. For example, the first slave owner asked the trafficker if he could accept a note, which indicates that his financial condition wasn’t good. And this foreshadows that he couldn’t give Solomon a hand even though he clearly knew that Solomon was a free man.I love this film. Actually I have a preference for English film director.。

Comment
“
“The film starkly and powerfully unveiled the sights and sounds of enslavement – from slaves picking cotton as they sang in the fields, to the crack of the lash down people‟s backs. We also heard a lot about the ideology behind enslavement. Masters such as William Ford and Edwin Epps, although very different characters, both used an interpretation of Christianity to justify their ownership of slaves. They believed the Bible sanctioned slavery, and that it was their „Christian duty‟ to preach the scriptures to their slaves.”( Emily West )
Plot
Ford sell Northup to Edwin Epps in order to pay a debt. Epps believed his right to abuse his slaves are biblically sanctioned. Patsey worked hard and was praised lavishly by Epps. He also repeatedly rapes her, and seems to fall in love with her against his better judgement. Epps' wife is envious of Patsey and frequently humiliates and attacks her.
Review on 12 Years a Slave
Review on 12 Years a SlaveThis story is told by Solomon Northup, a freeman cheated and sold as a nigger slave. He had worked for those “masters” for 12 years. During the 12 years, he lives a hard life and finally he succeeds in getting freedom and goes home. Now I know exactly why those leaders forbid teaching their slaves or lower class to write or read. If you have knowledge then you know too much to be a slave. It is dangerous for their “empire”. So it is “policy of keeping people in ignorance”. Even if some masters admire your knowledge and idea, they cannot really do something for you.I have great impression about a picture that Solomon is hanged by a string on the tree, struggling to survive. Behind him , some black people walk around, which seems that no one is there hanging to the death. In front of him, several black children are chasing and laughing loudly. It’s wired that they all neglect the poor man. I am not trying to blame them. And I know in a dilemma, they cannot do anything. But it’s a comfort that there is still a woman come to give him some water. T hat’s all she could do.Besides suffering of slaves, it also shows us the dilemma of those masters, like the first master. He is so powerless, I think. Though he really acts as a good person, he is a businessman caring more about his benefit.Another person impresses me a lot is the Canadian. He says that if one be the supervisors to look over those slaves, then they are not common people. When stripping the slaves, it’s hard to say if they are still keep their pure heart or become a beast feeling happy by stripping others. It remind me of the last master, “nigger killer”. Poor Parts is stripped because she goes to Show’s home for a small piece of shampoo. The cruel master does a lot of bad things to her and strips her so heavily. And finally he says he feels happy and relaxed after the cruel stripe. It’s the moment of return to be aggressive. Just like what the Canadian said. For benefit, for survival, for….We find a lot of excuses for our sins.。
Twelve Years a Slave" is a memoir and slave narrative written by Solomon Northup, a free African American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the southern United States. The book was published in 1853 and provides a firsthand account of Northup's experiences as a slave, detailing the brutality and inhumanity of the institution of slavery. In the book, Northup describes his life as a free man in New York, his abduction and sale into slavery, and his twelve years of enslavement on plantations in Louisiana. He recounts the physical and emotional hardships he endured, as well as the relationships he formed with other enslaved individuals. Northup's narrative offers a powerful and moving portrayal of the dehumanizing effects of slavery on both the enslaved and the enslavers."Twelve Years a Slave" is considered an important work of American literature for its unflinching depiction of the realities of slavery. Northup's detailed descriptions of the daily life of enslaved people, the violence and cruelty they faced, and the resilience and humanity they maintained in the face of oppression shed light on a dark chapter in American history. The book also serves as a historical document, providing valuable insights into the experiences of free African Americans who were kidnapped and sold into slavery, a practice known as "reverse kidnapping." Northup's narrative has been praised for its authenticity and attention to detail, as well as its contribution to the abolitionist movement in the United States. In addition to its literary and historical significance, "Twelve Years a Slave" has been adapted into a critically acclaimed film directed by Steve McQueen, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2014. The film brought renewed attention to Northup's story and the broader issue of slavery in the United States.Overall, "Twelve Years a Slave" is a powerful and important work that continues to resonate with readers and audiences today. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of slavery and the importance of confronting and reckoning with the injustices of the past. Solomon Northup's courageous and compelling narrative remains a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.。

My point of view
• In almost every scene of 12 Years a Slave, it conveys some sort of the truth of America's sin... Slavery. To this day of the film world, it, in my opinion, is one of the best movies to portray the life of slaves during the 1800's. It had brought out intense feelings and thoughts throughout the film. Those feelings and thought carried a sense of dignity and uncertainty as no one has really approached a something anything similar to this. 12 Years a Slave is more than a story about a slave waiting to see his family once again, but a story about shame and terror to see the next day. Slaves were to be slapped, whipped, and hung if they were to disobey their new masters, in which many did. The film is the complete opposite to the average slavery film of them trying to escape, but about refusing to accept a failure, as if they have given up on their life because they don't see an end to what they have been brought to. All in all, 12 Years a Slave was a tremendous film and was very deep in thought with the idea of slavery. The entire cast did an exceptional performance .

His twelve-year life experience can be roughly divided into three stages: forced separation from his family; struggle and growth as a slave; and return to his family and society. This journey also coincides with the heroic journey of Joseph Campbell’s mythology. This article will use Campbell's single mythological model to analyze Northrop's difficult experiences as a slave, his struggle with fate in adversity, and eventually gain freedom and return home. Later he wrote down his own experiences into a book so that more people can understand the humility of slaves and this unreasonable cruel system.
演奏结束当晚,三个人聚在一起庆祝,Solomon被两个黑奴贩子灌醉,其中一人望着不省人事的Solomon意味深长地说:“Tomorrow you will feel as well and refreshed as if the earth were new again.
在虚拟语气中,am/is/are都要改为were。
大家应该听过美国著名女歌手Beyoncé的那首“If I Were a Boy”吧?

A Black Fellow: I say we fight.Solomon: The crew is fairly small. If it were well planned, I believe they could be strong armed.Clemens:Three can’t go against a whole crew. The rest here are niggers, born and bred slaves. Niggers ain’t got no stomach for a fight. Not a damn one.A Black Fellow:All’s I know,we get where we’re travelling … We’ll wish we’d died trying.Clemens: Survival is not about certain death. It is about keeping your head down.Solomon: Days ago I was with my family, in my home. Now you tell me all is lost. Tell noon e who I am. That’s the way to survive? Well,I don’t want to survive; I want to live.
Platt: Eliza, Eliza. Stop! Stop your wailing! You let yourself be overcome by sorrow. You will drown in it.Eliza: Have you stopped crying for your children? You make no sounds, but will you ever let them go in your heart?Platt:They are as my flesh …Eliza: Then who is distressed? Do I upset the master and the mistress? Do you care less about my loss than their well-being?Platt: Master Ford is a decent man.Eliza: He is a slaver!Platt:Under the circumstances …Eliza: Under the circumstances, he is a slaver! But you truckle (讨好,谄媚) at his boot.Platt: No.Eliza: You luxuriate (沉湎于) in his favor.Platt: I survive! I will not fall into despair! I will offer up my talents to Master Ford. I will keep myself hearty until freedom is opportune (适时的)!Eliza: Ford is your opportunity. You think he does not know that you are more than you suggest? But he does nothing for you. Nothing. You are no better than prized livestock. Call for him. Call! Tell him of your previous circumstances, and see what it earns you, Solomon. So you’re settled into your role as Platt, then?Platt: My back is thick with scars for protesting my freedom! Do not accuse me.
Ford: He wants you dead, and he will have it so. It’s no longer safe for you here. And I don’t believe you will remain passive if Tibeats attacks. I have transferred my debt to Edwin Epps. He will take charge of you.Platt: Master Ford, you must know that I am not a slave.Ford: I cannot hear that.Platt: Before I came to you, I was a freeman.Ford: I am trying to save your life! And I have a debt to be mindful of. And that is to Edwin Epps now. He is a hard man, prides himself on being a “nigger breaker.” But truthfully, I could find no others who would take you. You’ve made a reputation of yourself. Whatever the circumstances, you are an exceptional nigger, Platt. But I fear no good will come of it.
