Greetings at the airportA: Excuse me, Sir. Is this Prof. Tallack from London?B: Yes, I am George Tallack from the school of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. You must be Miss. Dai, if I’m not mistaken.A: Yes, I am Dai jiajia, manager of Human Resources, the Haitong Group. I have been waiting for you, Prof. Tallack.B: Thank you for coming to meet me at the airport. This is a fantastic airport, absolutely one of the top-notch international airports.A: I am very glad to have the pleasure of meeting you in my hometown. It is indeed a first class international airport, as everybody says so. You’re welcome. We are very glad you made it in spite of the tiring trip. We’re very grateful you took time from your busy schedule and come to Haitong to give us advice.B: I’ve long been expecting to learn about the famous Haitong Group. I really appreciate this opportunity, which is also an opportunity for me to learn about Chinese enterprises at a close distance.A: How was the trip? It must be tiring, flying for more than 10 hours.B: Not too bad. But we were later than expected. The plane delayed taking off as we ran into a storm. We were held up for several hours at the airport, waiting for the storm to clear up. But we had good flying weather and we enjoyed a good attending service, of course.A: Well. You must be very tired after the long trip, and you have to get over the jet-lag. We have got all the luggage, haven’t we? Let’s drive directly to the hotel.B: Yes. I’m a bit tired. I’m very bad with the jet-lag. But I will be all right in a couple of days.A: Good. We’ll take you to the hotel for a good rest. You don’t have to get up early tomorrow. Here’s the schedule for tomorrow. We’ll host a reception lunch in your honor. And t hen you‘ll meet with Chairman of the Board in the afternoon. We’ll take you to the acrobatic show in the evening, a typical Chinese acrobatic show. How do you like that, Prof. Tallack?B: I like that. I’ve heard Chinese people ar e very friendly and hospitable. You’re very considerate, Miss. Dai. I will be spoiled soon, I am afraid.A: I hope you’ll have a pleasant stay here, and enjoy a happy collaboration with the Haitong group. I think w e’ve got everything. Our car is waiting outside. Shall we go now?B: Sure.Hotel accommodationA: Good afternoon. Welcome to the Peace Hotel. May I help you, sir?B: Yes, I’d like to check in, please.A: Certainly, sir. May I have your name, please? Do you have a reservation with us?B: Yes, it’s Robert King. I suppose somebody made the reservation for me.A: Just a moment, please. I'll check our reservation record… Oh, thank you for your waiting, sir. But I'm afraid we have no record of your reservation. Where was it made? Do you have a confirmation letter?B: That's very strange. I made the reservation about 10 days ago, through a travel agency at home. But I don’t have the conformation letter with me. What I have with me is a copy of the itinerary. Is there any problem with the accommodation for just 2 days?A: Just a minute, please. I'll check the vacancies. Very good, I got it. We have a double room, and there’s a deluxe suite available. Which one do you prefer?B: Thanks a lot. I prefer the double room. How long can I keep it? And is it a regular rate with no extra charge?A: Very good. Will you register here, please? No, there’s no extra charge. Actually, you would have a good rate with 20% off on the last deluxe suite.B: The double room is fine. Is there any service that I need to know?A: Certainly, sir. May I know if you have anything in particular?B: Yes. I'd like to have a 7:00 morning call, breakfast sent up to my room, shirts and pants laundered, some document photocopied, an express mail sent out, and something like that. A: No problem. Just call our front desk, Catering Service, Laundry Service, and Business Center. Or you may contact the Floor Service Desk. Is there anything else that I can do for you?B: Just one more thing. Do you have any place for fitness exercises? I go to the gym and exercise every day.A: Yes. We have a well-equipped fitness center, with coaches available. We have many modern facilities catering to the different needs of our gusts. We would be very pleased to make their stay enjoyable. I do hope you enjoy your stay here. If you have any other requirements, please let me know at anytime.B: Very good. Thank you very much.A: You are welcome.Banquet serviceA: Ladies and gentleman, good evening. It gives me a great pleasure to host the banquet in honor of our dear friends and dedicated experts, and celebrate the successful conclusion of our talks. In particular, I’d like to thank Ms. Kelland for her coming. Without her last-minute effort, we would still be in the middle of nowhere, and probabl y in the middle of negotiation, I’m afraid. B: Thank you, president Li. You all did it very well. I just contributed my share. We all successfully maneuvered to get our job done. Ladies and gentleman, are we carrying out another round of talk over the dinner?A: No more business talks today, we’ve put an end to it. I propose we limit our talk to friendship tonight. And of course we will delight ourselves completely in the foods that Mother Nature grants us.B: That’s great. The delicious Chinese food! I can’t wait to enjoy your food. What are we expecting tonight?A: Tonight we have prepared a typical Shanghai meal. I hope you will like it.B: Yes, eat in shanghai as shanghai people eat. But, to be frank, I have heard of the famous Cantonese food, Sichuan fo od, Shandong food, but not that much of Shanghai food. What’s special about Shanghai cuisine?A: Shanghai cuisine, usually called Benbang cuisine, is the youngest among ten major regional cuisines in china, with a history of more than 400 years. Like all other Chinese regional cuisines, Benbang cuisine takes “color, aroma, taste” as its essential qual ity elements. It emphasizes in particular the expert use of seasonings, the selection of raw materials with quality texture, and original flavors.B:It sounds very appetizing.A: I’d like to recommend a special snack known as Nanxiang Steamed Meat Dumplings and a special dish called Squirrel-shaped Mandarin Fish. Nanxiang Steamed Meat Dumplings are small in size and delicious in taste, with thin and translucent wrappers, filled inside with ground pork and rich tasty soup. The Squirrel-shaped Mandarin Fish is yellow-colored and squirrel-shaped, with crispy skin and tender meat, all covered with a sweet and sour sauce. They are absolutely tasters’ choice. I bet you will like them.B: Oh, I suppose they are the perfect combination of the three elements “color, aroma, taste”. Especially the squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, I can’t figure out how the chef make s the dish like a squirrel. Shall we add “appearance” to your judgment criteria?A: Absolutely right, plus “appearance”- that makes the fourth element. Ok, here we are. Please help yourself to the dishes.B: The dinner is so delicious. The dishes are complete with color, aroma, taste and appearance. Thank you very much for your invitation and hospitality. I hope I haven’t missed anything, have I?A: I am very glad you like the dishes. But this is just the beginning of the dinner. We have more surprises to expect. Ladies and gentleman, I consider it a great honor to have you all here for the wonderful time of the year. Let’s drink to the health of Ms. K elland.B: And toast to the health of president Li and to the health of everybody here. Cheers!A: To our lasting friendship and cooperation, cheers!Getting aroundA: Hello, welcome to Jinghe High-tech park. I’m operation manager of the Park. I’m honored to be your guide and take you to tour around the park. May I know your major interests?B: I’m interested in the general layout of the park. Would you please give some idea of its setup? A: Very good! First of all, we’ll take a bird’s-eye view of the park. And then we’ll look around in the park and, to use a Chinese metaphor, we’ll “cast a passing glance at flowers while riding on horseback.”B: Good idea! But we’ll cast a passing glance at flowers while riding on your car……in a more comfortable manner.A: I really like your humor, sir. Now let me come back to our story. Jinghe High-tech park enjoys a superior location, with the capital Beijing as the backdrop, facing the vast expanse of the Bo sea, bordered by the Jingjintang expressway to the east. It takes only 30 minutes to reach the capital’s international airport, 2o minutes to get to the Beijing Railway Cargo Station, and an hour to arrive at the Tianjin New Harbor. The park is a national development project approved by the State Council. It is authorized to approve projects with preferential policies, operating under the management system of international standards.B: When was it put to use? And who fuelled its development?A: The construction of the park was undertaken in two phases with the first covering 588 acres comprising 28 industrial lots as well as R&D, administrative and support facilities. And the second covers an area of 525 acres with 25 industrial lots. The park has been in full operation, supported by the generous loans from 5 Chinese banks and 2 overseas banks.B: The Park is well planned and arranged in perfect order.A: Yes, it is. A golf course lies on its east, the Moon River to its west, and a kilometer-wide greenbelt to its north. Inside the park, industries cluster in the east, residences concentrate in the west. In-between you can find the public service area.B: What do you do to attract foreign direct investment?A: The park administration takes strong measures to improve the investment environment, to foster new competitive advantages, and to make the park an investment paradise in North China for hi-tech companies and new-tech companies, multinationals, and large enterprises for pillar industries. The park’s two leading industries are modern information technology and biotechnology based on big data and cloud computing.B: Are there any particular requirements that prospective foreign enterprises must meet?A: The target industries must meet the P ark’s selection criteria. That is, they must strengthen research and development functions, use locally available technical resources and materials, develop suitable supporting industries, and collaborate with universities and public research institutes. Multinational companies from the United State, Japan, Korea, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, Holland and Norway have settled down in the park. The park enjoys strong government support and has complete hi-tech industry chains. It focus on the integration of industry, Education, and R&D. The Park provides a streamlined one-stop service for incoming enterprises.B: The physical environment of the park is wonderful.A: Yes, it is one of the things that we take so much pride in. The park Administration has been pursuing the policy of ecological conservation and sustainable development. To ensure the quality of the local environment, we stick steadfastly to our development strategy of “attracting investment with a green environment and maintaining a green environment through investment”. As you can see, the park has a green coverage of more than 45%. It is really boasts stretches of green grass, fosters of green trees, streams murmuring, birds chirping, air refreshing, fragrant flowers blossoming all year round——The whole environment is enveloped in a peaceful, elegant and relaxing atmosphere.B: You’re a real poet. Do you have independent and complete establishment for water and power supply, and for waste treatment?A: Yes, the park has an independent techno-support center, which is equipped with high-standard facilities for water and electricity supply and provides the enterprises with reliable, stable and quality power, clean water, Internet maintenance service, as well as a 24-hour security service. B: That's wonderful.WelcomeA: Welcome to Shanghai, Mr. Roberts. I’m Chen Tianmin, from Shanghai Post and Telecommunications Service Development Company. I’m director of the company’s overseas department.B: Nice to meet you, director Chen. I’m very excited to visit your company a nd of course, to tour around Shanghai and the whole country.A: I’m very happy that you have come all the way from Britain. We are very proud and honored you will work with us, and be part of our department. I sincerely hope that your visit will be worthwhile and meaningful.B: It is indeed my pleasure and privilege to have received your gracious invitation and work with a distinguished group of people like Director Chen. I had been looking forward to this visit foryears. I had a dream that someday I would visit china and work in the beautiful city of Shanghai for a while. I’m very grateful that you have made my dream come true.A: I’m very glad that you have so high expectations on this business trip in Shanghai. We will make an all-out effort to make your stay comfortable and pleasant. For your convenience and comfort, we accommodate you in one of the company’s villas for overseas visitors. It is located by the beach, 15 minutes’ bicycle ride from the office building of the overseas department. I’m sure you will like it.B: That’s wonderful. Isn’t it nice that not only your “overseas department” looks “over the sea”, but also my residence?A: I really like your sense of humor, Mr. Roberts. Do you know the word “Shanghai” in Chinese means literally “a port on the se a”. we’re very proud that we can offer our British friends a residence overlooking the sea. Britain is a country of island on the sea, isn’t it?B: I like what you said, director Chen. We have much in common with Shanghai and Shanghai people. I believe my wife will like here, too.A: I hope your family will join you soon. Our company will pay for all their expenses, including international flights.B: Thank you so much for your concern. My wife teaches at a university and the best time for her and our son to come over is when the school breaks in the summer. Two more months to go. We simply can’t wait to see each other here in Shanghai.A: I’m sorry you have to wait for that long.B: You’re very nice, Director Chen, really.A: You must be very tired after a long flight, Mr. Roberts. You’ll need a rest for tonight’s reception party. I’ll send someone to pick you up at six.B: Very good.A: I’m leaving. See you in the evening, then.B: Bye now.A wish to investA: Hi,Mr. Roberts.B: Hi, Miss. Chen. I’ve been thinking about something lately, and I’d like to share my thoughts with you.A: I’d like to hear them. And I’ll be very happy if I can help you with anything.B: In the west everybody is talking about going to the East and making an investment. Apparently a growing number of foreign firms have been pouring into china, and the Pudong Are of Shanghai is among the best choices of their investment destination. Today it isn’t a mat ter of whether to go to east, but when and how.A: You’re absolutely right. Overseas investment in Shanghai and its surrounding areas has increased in recent years and, notably, quadrupled in china’s mid-west. There are many reasons for this rising investment boom. Apart from the fact that china is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, the Chinese central government and local government focus a lot of their attention on opening the whole country up to the outside world, both the coastal cities and the country’s interior areas. They are doing all they can to attract foreign investment. On the other hand, many institutional and individual investors overseas find it more profitable to invest directly in china than just to do trade with Chinese companies.B: I’m not sure if I understand the logic behind the preference. I’m all ears to your explanation. A: OK. Basically, direct foreign investment in china maximizes the strengths of both parties concerned. China has massive land, abundant natural resources, a huge supply of skilled labor, low taxation, a growing consumer market, improving infrastructure and of course, a stable political environment with attractive policies. All these are rarely found elsewhere in the world. On the other hand, foreign investors from developed countries or areas have sufficient funds, advanced technology and managerial expertise. Direct Investment in china will yield higher economic returns than import and export trade.B: You’re right. I have friends who are interested in direct investment in china. Do you have any idea about the best place in which to invest?A: Personally, I like you to invest in the Pudong Area of Shanghai. Not because it’s my hometown, but it really is an ideal place for the investment. If you or your friends are interested, I have a lot of investment literature for you to study. I’ve also heard of many very successful stories of foreign investment in Chin a’s inland areas and other coastal cities. There is really no “the best place”. It’s a matter of a better place at a given time.B: My next question concerns the forms of investment that are allowed in china currently.A: Among others you can invest in a joint venture with a Chinese partner, or establish a business independently, that is, set up a company solely funded and owned by a foreign investor.B: What is the deference?A: With a joint venture, a foreign partner usually brings into the enterprise or business capital funds, machinery, advanced technology and management, while the Chinese partner supplies land, labor and a portion of the funds for the infrastructure. The business is then jointly run by both parties. As for the solely foreign-funded firm, you provide all the funds and take all the benefits, as well as all the risks. You can run the company in whatever way you prefer, within the boundary of Chinese laws, of course.B: Your explanations are very enlightening. If we should decide to invest in Shanghai, we’d like you to be our Chinese consultant. I hope you won’t refuse our offer then.A: It’s my honor. I’m looking forward to my early service.Establishing a joint ventureA: I’m so happy to see you again, Mr. Roberts. May help you in some way?B: Hi, Miss. Chen. It’s been 10 months since I left china. I would like to discuss with you the possibilities of establishing a joint venture with your company to manufacture mobile TV and mobile phones.A: That’s great. Your proposal is a very wise decision. Our company is also seeking foreign investment in a manufacturing company for mobile TV and mobile phones. Your initiative is most welcome. I remember talking to you about the matter of foreign investment in china a year ago, Mr. Roberts.B: Yes, you did a very good job. The whole idea of investing in a joint enterprise is the direct result of your wonderful lecture. Your answers were direct and honest. And your explanations were sincere and persuasive. May I get on the china’s express train and share your economic gains?A: Of course. Welcome aboard, Mr. Roberts! Let’s get down to the business of the joint venture. May I have some idea of your proposal?B: I did a lot of research in the market of entertainment and telecommunications equipment lately. There is a potential market for mobile TV and mobile phones in china and elsewhere in the world. Initially, I would like to embark on this joint venture business at a moderate rate, with a safe scale. My suggestion for the amount of total capital investment is in the vicinity of 16.8 million US dollars, a lucky number in china, I suppose.A: Very good. 16.8 million is more than a lucky number; it’s the right number for the initiation of the joint venture, as I understand it. But how much will be your share of investment in this partnership?B: My contribution is 50% of the total investment, including the construction funds, and the cost of all the imported equipment, engineers, technicians and management staff from my home company.A: I like the idea of a 50 to 50 investment partnership, in which case there will be a 50-50 contribution in business management and profit share.B: You’re a bsolutely right.A: The problem then involves the marketing of the manufactured products. Mobile TV is in high demand in china, but we can’t guarantee the 50% domestic marketing of mobile phones. Besides, we need to increase our foreign exchange reserve for the rainy day. May I suggest that you market at least 65% of the total number of mobile phones internationally? I believe you need more foreign currency than our renmibi.B: I love renminbi. We all know it is one of the strongest currencies in the world. And I have heard that the Chinese yuan will become a convertible currency soon. But I accept your proposal, we will be responsible for the international marketing of two thirds of the mobile phones.A: That’s beutiful.B: Two more questions. One concerns the term of our partnership and the other the management’s structure of the venture.A: As for the term of our partnership, let’s start with a 15-year term for this joint venture, and extend the contract if both parties wish to continue the partnership. What do you say to this? B: It’s quite logical. May I suggest that we set up a board of directors for the management of the company and share our rights and obligations as equal partners.A: That coincides with our usual practice. Should we hold another round of discussion nest week on some technical problems in a more detailed way?B: That’s fine. I like to work with you, as I did before. It’s been a very rewarding day.A: Yes, indeed. Have a nice weekend, Mr. Roberts.B: You, too.Cultural differencesA: Mr. Roberts, You have been living in china for 2 years. How do you like it?B: I think I’m quite used to my Chinese life here. Actually I’m thinking about settling down in china for good.A: I saw 2 American movies a few days ago. One is entitled American Beauty and the other is Life of Pi.B: Do you like these films? They are both Oscar winners.A: I like Life of Pi so much, particularly about how to conquer fear. I saw it a second time. Fear is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary. Itrespects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unerring ease.B: Fear begins in your mind. The movie also tells us that if every unfolding we experience takes us further along in life, then, we’re truly experiencing what life is offering. What about American Beauty? How do you like it?A: I didn't quite get the story. I don’t quite understand why this movie won the Oscar for the best picture of the year, either. Maybe the answer is the difference between the Chinese and American cultures, or rather, it is due to the cultural difference between the East and the West. B: That is a good topic and a broad topic, too. Let me talk a bit more about the film you mentioned. Actually, I have noticed a very interesting difference between many Chinese and Americans in understanding the title of the film.A: Yes?B: In some oriental countries, the translation of the film's title goes as something like A Beautiful American Lady, or even Beauty Is Guilty. While to most of the Americans, I'm afraid the reaction toward this title is mixed or confused, for they cannot decide what exactly the phrases might indicate. The film first and foremost refers to a type of rose bearing large, long-stemmed purplish-red flowers. And the flowers usually remind people of romance, love, beauty in its abstract sense, and vigor and vitality of a nation, etc. But this interesting image on the film’s poster has failed to make any sense to many Chinese viewers.A: That's right. At least I didn’t get that. Is this due to cultural differences?B: Yes, absolutely. Such cultural differences arise from a difference in region, race, history, environment, and in the levels of economic, scientific and technological development.A: Can you offer us some examples? For instance, during your stay in china, have you found any serious cultural differences and clashes with regard to life and work?B: We emphasize efficiency, competition and originality while your management gives priority to careful planning and encourages close cooperation and altruistic dedication among team members. In daily contacts, we tend to be humorous and casual while some of you appear more serious and formal. In American schools, discussion is given top priority and seminar is the usual way of class. Good teachers are those who possess flexible and adaptable talents, and are able to respond instantaneously at any moment to any questions that might arise among students. That kind of capacity makes a popular teacher in the United States. But Chinese teachers like to lecture in class, and a lot of them are obsessed with examinations; they spend long hours planning and preparing lessons, and writing consistent and standardized teaching plans. All too often, they’re happy with bringing up identical and standardized talents. A: I think Americans give too much importance to individualism and personal gains, so much so that it might sacrifice collective benefits, hurt the agreeable relationship among group members and even bring harm to the harmony of the society.B: Yes, in many cases, you’re right. American working ethic seems to be more individual-oriented. We often value the results and accomplishments of work more than its process. Central to American political, economic and social thought is the concept of individual moral autonomy. If I’m not mistaken, traditional Chinese philosophical systems a re based on Confucianism, which sings high praises for individuals to uplift themselves for the benefit of communal harmony. That is, communal harmony takes precedence over individual freedom.A: You may say so. I should say you’re partially correct on that. In spite of so much culturaldifferences, globalization has brought the world increasingly closer. Likewise, cultural exchanges have become more and more extensive.B: Yes, The global integration of economy and the speeding information revolution have brought the world closer than ever before. Chinese learn English, Americans learn Chinese; we drink tea, you like coca-cola; we exercise Kung Fu, you go bowling; we enjoy Peking Duck, you like KFC; Titanic sailed into china, the peony pavilion has been performed on Broadway. Nowadays, easterners and westerners are walking side by side, talking face to face, living, working and studying in harmony. The whole world is becoming increasingly beautiful due to cultural exchanges.A: Yes, "Chinese beauty" and "American beauty" are walking together. I believe there's still much more room for further discussion on this topic. As time is limited, we have to stop here today. We’ll find some other time to continue our talk. Thank you.B: My pleasure. Yes, w e’ll do it som e other time.Travel in AmericaA: It is said that the United States is a country driven by automobiles, and Americans are actually a people living on wheels. Is this an exaggeration?B: This is basically a correct observation, which says something about the American way of life. Americans like to do business without leaving their cars. Wherever you go, you’ll see drive-in banks, drive-in restaurants, drive-in churches and drive-in movies.A: If I visit the United States with a tourist’s visa, can I drive in the country?B: Yes, you can. When you drive in the U.S., it’s a good idea to have an international driver’s license if you are a foreigner and don’t have a state license. Each of 50 states of the U.S. has its own traffic laws. Drivers are expected to know and understand the local laws even if y ou don’t live in a particular state. Drivers can get information at a tourist information center when you cross the border into a different state.A: In china, drivers have to drive under a posted speed limit on some roads. Is there any national speed limit in the U.S.?B: Yes. In most states, the speed limit on the expressway is 55 miles per hour, or about 88 kilometers per hour. On some roads, such as state or federal expressways, there is a minimum speed of 40 miles per hour, or about 65 kilometers per hour.A: As a visitor on a business trip, I don’t need to buy a car in order to travel in America. I suppose you have some kind of car rental service, don’t you?B: Of course we do. This country has the most developed car rental industry in the world. The two largest American companies, Hertz and Avis, have offices all over the United States, with counters at most airports and in many international cities. Other national car rental companies that you can find at airports, such as Thrifty、National、Budget or Dollar, have offices in other countries too, so you may want to reserve a car through your travel agent in your own country. A: How do I pay for my rental service?B: In order to rent a car, you have to have a major credit card, such as MasterCard, Visa, or American Express. Without a credit card you may have to pay a very high deposit on the car. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you may rent used cars from used car companies, such as Rent-A-Junker or Ugly Duckling. Their rates are often lower and they don’t always demand a credit card. Sometimes they have special offers that make the total cost of renting a car even。

And then you‘ll meet with Chairman of the Board in the afternoon. We’ll take you to the acrobatic show in the evening, a typical Chinese acrobatic show. How do you like that, Prof. Tallack?B: I like that. I’ve heard Chinese people are very friendly and hospitable. You’re very considerate, Miss. Dai. I will be spoiled soon, I am afraid.A: I hope you’ll have a pleasant stay here, and enjoy a happy collaboration with the Haitong group.I think we’ve got everything. I'd like to have a 7:00 morning call, breakfast sent up to my room, shirts and pants laundered, some document photocopied, an express mail sent out, and something like that.A: No problem. Without her last-minute effort, we would still be in the middle of nowhere, and probably in the middle of negotiation, I’m afraid. But, to be frank, I have heard of the famous Cantonese food, Sichuan food, Shandong food, but not that much of Shanghai food. What’s special about Shanghai cuisine?A: Shanghai cuisine, usually called Benbang cuisine, is the youngest among ten major regional cuisines in china, with a history of more than 400 years. Like all other Chinese regional cuisines, Benbang cuisine takes “color, aroma, taste” as its essential quality elements. Especially the squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, I can’t figure out how the chef makes the dish like a squirrel. Kelland.B: And toast to the health of president Li and to the health of everybody here. Cheers!A: To our lasting friendship and cooperation, cheers!。
