Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colors preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up----we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Colors do influence our moods----there is no doubt about it .A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge overthe Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area ----until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.1."You would rather follow than lead" means_______.A. you don't like to follow othersB. you would be a member rather than a leaderC. you would be afraid of following othersD. you would like to be a leader rather than a follower2. If one enjoys life, one is sure to prefer________.A. red to yellowB. blue to orangeC. red to greyD. blue to yellow3."They tell us, among other facts, that we don't choose our favorite colors as we grow up." "among other facts" means______.A. besides other factsB. in regard to other factsC. not considering other factsD. according to other facts4. Which of the following is facts?A. People's preference of one color to another is instinctB. People's preference of one color to another is acquired as they grow up.C. More people happen to love brown because they saw something brown when they were bornD. Colors have little influence on our moods5. Those who committed suicide preferred the bridge over the Thames River near London to others because of _______.A. its shapeB. its structureC. its colorD. its building materials2.题干:Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way --- by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes wa shing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents. The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study. As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.1. The underlined phrase swap meets in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.A. fitting roomsB. trading fairsC. business talksD. group meetings2. Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out _______.A. what caused the shipping accidentB. when and where the shoes went missingC. whether it was all right to use their shoesD. how much they lost in the shipping accident3. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?A. By collecting information from beachcombers.B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.4. Ebbesmeyer is most famous for ________.A. traveling widely the coastal cities of the worldB. making records for any lost objects on the seaC. running a global currents research associationD. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea5. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A. To call people's attention to ocean pollution.B. To warn people of shipping safety in the ocean.C. To explain a unique way of studying ocean currents.D. To give tips on how to search for lost objects on the beach.3.题干:Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn’t buy as much as it used to, no matter where you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one’s hands. Inflation(通货膨胀) eats away at its buying power just as the steady appetite of waves chews at sand cliffs. But what about coins that seem to do very little except clutter(塞满) up purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where is won’t get scratched or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable, fall more readily into a category for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the piece of this metal goes up.But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively cheaper sliver. In 1840, the United States mint(造纸厂) struck 19 570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach the auction market. So what happened to some 19 564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon for the American territory then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates(海盗). The probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down since the silver value was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.1. It can be inferred from the passage that____.A. money buys as much as it did beforeB. money does not buy as much as it did beforeC. Paper money buys more than metal moneyD. metal money buys more than paper money2. Which of the following is TRUE of a coin?A. The longer it is held, the less valuable it becomes.B. The more it wears out, the more valuable it becomes.C. The less it gets scratched, the less it values.D. The longer it lasts, the more it values.3. According to this passage, one of the rarest coins in the world is made of ____.A. silverB. goldC. copperD. paper4. Coins become more valuable because _____.A. they clutter up purses and pocketsB. the price of metal goes upC. they fall more readily into a category for collectors due to their durationD. both B and C5. What really happened to some 19 564 large silver coins?A. They were melted down.B. They were sunk in the Gulf of Mexico.C. It is still a mysteryD. They were stolen by pirates.4.题干:Most of us lead unhealthy lives; we spend far too much sitting down. If in addition we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become loose and flabby (松弛的) and our systems sluggish (缺乏活力的). There are some aspects of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid.I am thinking of such features of modern urban life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to minimize the effects of these evils. The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take up some sport or other. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them. For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports-and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them-there are such solitary activities as cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. What often happens though is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that it is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, apart from the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair.Even after you have found a routine for keeping in shape, through sport or gymnastics, you are still only half way to good health, because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete mental and physical relaxation. It has to do with deep breathing, emptyingyour mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on. Yoga, as practiced in the West, is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state of relaxation. It seems ironical, though, that as our lives have improved in a material sense we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity-physical effort on the one hand and relaxation on the other-which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.1. Pollution, noise and stress are examples of _____.A .causes of unfitness B. bad features of living in townsC. the things we can completely do away withD. unavoidable things in town2. Most of the people who go to the park at the weekend are _______.A. football playersB. football spectatorsC. keep-fit enthusiastsD. elderly people3. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random kindness and sen seless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down.Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, o ne of whom was the da ughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant. Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies include painting th e classrooms of shabby schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!1. Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?A. She knew the car drivers well.B. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market. In the investigational market, goods on sale coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition. Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions. In making investigations, we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information? There are many channels that we can ma ke use of in doing this sort of work. The commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot.Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us some opportunities. Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations.1. In making market investigations, one should______.A. get enough information concernedB. advertise his productsC. produce high quality goodsD. none of above2. The word “indispensable” in the first line means ______.A. impossibleB. essentialC. advisableD. available3. Which of the following statement is NOT true?A. All of the following are channels to get market information EXCEPT______.A. to have commercial counselor’s office of our embassies stationed abroadB. to promote the quality of our own productsC. to send trade groups abroad every now and thenD. to have face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen7.题干:Is there a “success personality”—some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone develop it?At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes of 1500 prominent people selected at random from who’s who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of t he most important, that is common sense.Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents. Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for succe ss is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry r educing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their—and your own—mistakes.Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in who’s who someday.1. It can be known from the passage that who’s who _____.A. is a very useful book telling us how to succeedB. is a book providing us with the information about the family life of some famous peopleC. is a book providing us with the names and brief biographies of the top successful people2. According to the author, common sense _____.A. is something that common people like bestB. is a popular quality a person is born withC. is something that enables one to form correct opinionsD. is a quality that is possessed by common people3. It can be inferred from the passage that a successful businessman _____.A. pays attention to the essence of a problem when he tries to solve itB. tries to get experience through practiceC. keeps on learning in order to be successfulD. has strong willpower, extensive interest and intelligence4. The passage is mainly concerned with _____.A. organizational ability and good work habitsB. the way to obtain big profits and achieve fame and successC. knowledge and interest which are primary to successD. what successful people have in common5. According to the author, how to develop one’s common sens e?A. To learn how to debate and learn from mistakes.B. To become a businessmanC. To become famous.D. To be simplifying.8.题干:The frightening rise in crime of violence throughout the country has caused more and more people to arm themselves. They buy guns to protect their homes and to carry with them for personal safety when traveling. Unfortunately, instead of safety, what the new handgun owner too often gets is personal tragedy. As I found out in my reading, a handgun does not protect the American home very well. The home handgun is far more likely to kill or injure family members and friends than anyone who breaks in, and is especially harmful to young adults and children.Because 90 percent of break-ins take place when no one is home, the handgun bought for defense is very often stolen. According to some statistics, each year about 100,000 handguns are stolen from ordinary citizens. These guns then enter the criminal underworld and are used in more crimes. Thus, the citizen who lost guns is helping to arm the criminal class. As a New York City police officer recently pointed out to a homeowner who asked if he should buy a handgun to protect his home, too often it is the homeowner himself who ends up getting shot and killed, because he most often warns the robber by saying something like “Stop!” or “What do you think you’re doing?” Possibly, the thief turns and fires. In street crime, the use of a handgun for defense is very risky, with the defender often losing the gun and having it used against him. The handgun owner seldom even gets the chance to use his or her gun because the moment of surprise is always with the attacker. In fact, trying to use a handgun to keep someone off makes the risk of death quite a bit higher. For the ordinary citizen, using a handgun is seldom helpful for defense on the street. And, in the home, the only way to get real defense from a personal handgun would be to have it always at the ready, perhaps in hand loaded and ready to fire every time there is a knock on the door. That is not exactly the American way or my idea of a civilized society.1.Why do people arm themselves according to the passage?A. Because they want to use guns to protect their personal goods.B. Because killing animals with guns is their favorite sport.C. Because the number of crimes of violence is still small.D. Because people intend to attack others with guns in crimes.2.More often than not, what the handgun brings its owner is .A. safetyB. tragedyC. luckD. happiness。

Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to besomething which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listenand understand — he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt thedelight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature andfrom human bodies in motion and repose; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint gangrenous leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect ofthe world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something一all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.(1).It is hard to explain what a painter is saying becauseA.most painters do not express themselves wellB. a painter uses unusual words and phrasesC. a painter uses shapes and colors instead of wordsD.many painters do not say anything(2).An artist, s choice of shapes and colors indicates that he believes them tobeA. meaningful in themselvesB. merely beautifulC. a reflection of his experiencesD. worth looking at(3).The writer says that contemporary artists might say their choice of subject .A.carries a message to the publicB.only provides interesting patternsC. has no pattern of formD. teaches the public important truths(4).The writer says that contemporary art contains .A. nothing but meaningless patternsB. uninteresting aspects of the worldC. subjects chosen partly for their meaningD. completely meaningless subjects (5).The passage implied that.A. A painting is more easily understood than a symphonyB. Art is merely the arranging of shape and colorC. Every artist tries to say something to the publicD. One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artist is saying2.After practicing as a surgeon for several years, Dr. Ginoux decided to apply for membership in the American College of Surgeons (美国夕卜科医生学会),a highly selective and distinguished professional organization. As part of the application procedure (手续),Dr. Ginoux was asked to prepare a list of all the operations performed in the previous seven years. Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began to feel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have run one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have ,・・ Would the doctorson the selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeon inthe area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to rely completely on her own judgment? For the first time, Dr. Ginoux felt lonely and isolated. The longer Dr. Ginoux worked on the application forms, the moredepressed she became. As hope faded, she wondered if a “country doctor”had a realistic chance of being accepted by the American College of Surgeons.(1).Dr. Ginoux was working in .A. a large cityB. the American College of SurgeonsC. an area far from any big cityD. a selective organization(2).The application forms must include _____ .A. the decision procedureB. a record of all the operations.C. the best techniqueD. a list of advice and judgments(3).It was most probable that Dr. Ginoux wasA. a member in that organizationB. a well-trained surgeonC. a graduatefrom the American College of Surgeons D. a distinguished surgeon in America (4).When she was filling the application froms, Dr. Ginoux began to beA. realisticB. distinguishedC. perplexedD. decisive(5).When filling the forms, Dr. Ginoux felt depressed because .A. she didn' t perform enough operationsB. some operations wereunsuccessful C. she didn' t get advice from the selection committee D. she was doubtful about her operations3.An important new industry, oil refining, grew after the Civil War. Crude oil, or petroleum - a dark, thick ooze from the earth - had been known for hundreds of years. But little use had ever been made of it. In the 1850' s Samuel M. Kier, a manufacturer in the western Pennsylvania, began collecting the oil from local seepages and refining it into kerosene, Refining, like smelting, is a process of removing impurities from a raw material.Kerosene was used to light lamps. It was a cheap substitute for whaleoil, which was becoming harder to get. Soon there was a large demand for kerosene. People began to search for new supplies of petroleum. The first oil well was drilled by E. L. Drake, a retired railroad conductor. In 1859 he began drilling in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The whole venture seemed so impractical and foolish that onlookers called it “Drake's Folly” . But when he had drilled down about 70 feet (21 meters), Drake struck oil. His well began to yield 20 barrels of crude oil a day.News of Drakes success brought oil prospectors to the scene. By theearly I860' s these wildcatters were drilling for “black gold" all over western Pennsylvania. The boom rivaled the California gold rush of 1848 inits excitement and Wild West atmosphere. And it brought far more wealth tothe prospectors than any gold rush.Crude oil could be refined into many products. For some years kerosene continued to be the principal one. It was sold in grocery stores and door-to-door. In the 1880' s refiners learned how to make other petroleumproducts such as waxes and lubricating oils. Petroleum was not then used to make gasoline or heating oil.(1).Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Oil Refining: A Historical PerspectiveB. The California Gold Rush: Get Rich QuicklyC. Private Property: Trespassers Will Be ProsecutedD. Kerosene Lamps: Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted(2).It can be inferred from the passage that Kerosene was preferable to whaleoil because whale oil was too .A. expensiveB. thickC. hotD.pollutedWhy does the author mention the California gold rush? A. to explain the need for an increased supply of gold B. to indicate the extent of United States mineral wealth C. to describe the mood when oil was first discovered D. to argue that gold was more valuable than oil(4).The word "one" in the second sentence of the last paragraph could best bereplaced by which of the following words?A. oilB. doorC. storeD. product(5).The author mentions all of the following as possible products of crude oil EXCEPTA. waxB. gasolineC. KeroseneD. plastic 4.Are you planning a vacation? If you like hot and extremely dry summers,go to Phoenix, Arizona. For hot temperatures but lots of rain and thunderstorms, try Miami, Florida. If you want average temperatures and rainfall, St. Louis, Missouri, is the spot. Or if you,re a cold weather fan, head to Fairbanks, Alaska. Its winters are very cold with little precipitation. Each of these cities has a certain type of weather. The average weather for a place over many years is called climate, and in no two places in the world is it exactly the same. How can this be?Many things in nature, such as sunshine, temperature, and precipitation, affect climate. Nearness to mountain, oceans, and large lakes affects it too. Another factor is altitude, or height above sea level. Air cools as altitude increases. So a city at a higher altitude may be colder than one at a lower altitude. Finally, winds affect climate. They move heat and moisture between the oceans and continents. Winds keep the tropics from overheating. Theykeep the polar regions from getting overly cold.Climate changes over long periods of time. Some scientists think, for example, that the earth,s climate changed at the time of the dinosaurs. They think the dinosaurs died because of the change. What causes a climate to change? One possible cause may be changes in the sun. Sunspots, for example, are cool, dark spots that form on the sun. Sunspots may decreaseprecipitation on the earth and cause unusually dry periods. Changes in the atmosphere may change climate too. Volcanic eruptions, for instance, release solid particles into the air. These particles may form a cloud that blocksout the sun,s heat. Human activity is another cause of climate change. Air pollution and the reduction of forest cover may have long-term effects on climate.(1).This passage is concerned with things that affect .A. precipitationB. climateC. altitudeD. sunspots(2).Change in climate may have caused .A. dinosaurs to dieB. dark spots to form on the sunC.volcanic eruption D. air pollution(3).The effect of a volcanic eruption on climate may be to make itA. wetterB. dryerC. warmerD. colder(4).To help readers understand how climate can change, the writer uses.A. examplesB. a story about the seashoreC. order of importanceD. a strong argument(5).Which of the following is the place of greatest altitude on a mountain?A. the foot of the mountainB. 8, 500 feet up the mountainC. the top of the mountainD. 15,785 feet up the mountain答案:一、单项选择题(60分,共60题,每小题1分)1. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment. At first, this mayseem unfriendly to you. Drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well. Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be .If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a stranger here. Can you help me?”Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. Ifthis happens, do not be discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.(1). (阅读理解题)I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get youinto a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed(解散). As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible (负责任) for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized(强调) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating(欺骗) themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously(认真地) about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave.I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copy ing answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Firstly, chores help kids learn responsibility and self-reliance. Assigning children regular chores helps teach them responsibility. Tasks that personally affect your kids, such as cleaning their room or doing their own laundry, can help them become more self-reliant at the same time. Your kids or grandkids may also take pride in being considered mature enough to take care of themselves.
Secondly, chores help improve planning and time management skills. It feels like there are a million things to do in the day, and fitting it all into our diaries is a challenge! Chores can help older kids and teens build good habits early. Juggling schoolwork deadlines, housework and their social lives helps them learn to set priorities and manage their time, important skills for the working world.
Lastly, chores give families a chance to bond. People often lament that chores take up time they could be spending with their kids or grandkids. But chores can actually create special moments between children and adults. Little ones who always want to help will feel important and receive a self-esteem boost, and moody teens may decide to open up over a shared task.
