Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests. They learned that rain forests ar e important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.
Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem. Badly, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute! As part of a class project, Mye rs’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America. They paid $25 per acre. The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interes ted in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.
So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators (短吻鳄) and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not h appy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers.
Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities. They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.
Myers hopes to make the trip every year with a different group of kids.
24. What made them buy a piece of rain forest?

Text 1
M: I need to take some medicine. I think I got a cold.
W: Well, you might want to drink some water first. I haven’t seen you have anything to drink all day, even while we were having lunch.
Text 2
M: Three tests in one day! At least the math test was not as hard as the history test. W: Yes, but the math test was harder than the English test. And even worse, the math test was much longer than the other two tests.
Text 3
M: What happened to my book?
W: I’m sorry. I needed something to write on, and your book was right by the phone. M: Oh, no! Now I won’t be able to sell it back to the bookstore.
Text 4
M: Sarah, I’m so glad it’s finally Saturday. We’re all going to play basketball. Want to join us?
W: Sorry. I have a piano lesson today. But I could join you tomorrow afternoon if you can change your plans.
M: Of course we can!
Text 5
M: Why are you always looking down? I never see anything but the top of your head.
W: Sorry, Dad. I’ll put the phone away now.
Text 6
W: Can you give me your arm, Johnny? You’ll just feel a little pain.
M: OK. But are you sure I need this?
W: The doctor ordered it. And you don’t want to get the flu. You missed last year’s trip to Shanghai because you were sick. Do you want to miss the trip to Beijing next week? M: No, you’re right. Tommy is sick, and he can’t go.
W: See? He’ll be stuck here in Harbin, and you’ll be at the Summe r Palace.
M: Go ahead, then.
W: I’ve already done it.
M: Whoa! I didn’t feel a thing!
Text 7
M: Do you want to go out and get some food, Tammy?
W: Sure. I’m tired of eating cafeteria food. I wish our dorm rooms had kitchens.
M: Me, too. I really miss Indian food.
W: If I had a kitchen, I’d make Chinese food. I really miss the food from the northeast of China.
M: Well, at least we can choose a good restaurant. What are you hungry for?
W: I kind of want Italian food, Don. There’s a street near the mall that h as restaurants with all kinds of food. Maybe we should go there and pick the one that looks the best. M: Good idea!
Text 8
M: Your café has become one of the most popular meeting places for university students. W: Yes, it has. I can’t believe it. I wasn’t planning to be a café owner.
M: How did this all start?
W: I was studying for final exams, and I thought the library was too dark and a little crowded. M: Well, it sure is sunny and comfortable here. How did you find this place?
W: I rented the top floor of this house and cleaned it up so I could study here.
M: So, how did it become a café?
W: I invited a few friends to join me while I was studying, and they offered to buy the coffee. One thing led to another, and we just grew and grew.
M: Do you think you’ll keep the place open after you graduate?
W: Definitely.
Text 9
W: Good afternoon, sir. I’m doing some market research. Do you have a few minutes to answer some of my questions?
M: I didn’t come to the mall to be asked a bunch of questions. I’m trying to find a gift for my wife.
