(2) Actually Byron has enriched European poetry with an abundance of ideas, images, artistic forms & innovations. He stands with Shakespeare & Scott among the British writers who exert the greatest influence over the mainland of Europe.

• Light ---- lightly spoken of or lightly esteemed • The last two lines ---- These two lines show your name now is connected with shame instead of fame.
(2) His literary career was closely linked with the struggle & progressive movements of his age. He opposed oppression & slavery, & had an ardent love for liberty.
• Knell ---- the sound of a bell rung slowly, esp. for a death of funeral; the sound is like a knell to my ear.
• They know not I know thee, / Who knew thee too well ------ These two lines is the focus of the poem --- the speaker loves the woman out of deep understanding which goes beyond the scandal.
(2) In most of his works we can see Byron’s violent attack on “cant (伪善) politics, religion & morals”, his novelty of the oriental scenery, the romantic character of Byronic hero & the easy, fluent & natural beauty of his verse.
(3) The poem is alternately rhymed to show the poet’s mental pain of love mingled with hate. The metrical movement of this poem is basically a combination of iambic and anapaestic (抑抑 扬格) feet, with a rhyme scheme ababcdcd.
(3) He praised the people’s revolutionary struggles in his works. His poems are favorites of the British workers & the laboring people of other countries.
(3) Byron’s diction, though unequal & frequently faulty, has on a whole freedom, copiousness & vigor. His descriptions are simple & fresh, and often bring vivid objects before the reader.

• The first two lines ---- The first two lines set the fundamental key of the whole poem, that is the regret at the past love.
Byronic Hero
(1) It is a proud, mysterious rebel figure of noble origin.
(2) With immense superiority in his passions & powers, this Byronic hero would carry on his shoulders the burden of righting all the wrongs in a corrupt society,

(6) He was a great admirer of Dryden & Pope, but he lacked Pope’s care for artistic finish. Many of his lines are harsh, ragged & unrhythmical. Some of his poems show Byron’s individual heroism & pessimism.

Introduction
(1) This is a lyric poem of usual love between man and woman. The speaker’s emotion is the focus instead of the story itself.
(2) Sound is very prominent in the poem. Every sound carries some meaning of the speaker. Sound arrangement is part of the meaning of the poem. Eg: -d & -s appear alternately at the end of the line in the first stanza.
(4) The glowing imagination of the poet rises & falls with the tones of his enthusiasm, roughing into argument, or softening into melody feeling & sentiments.
Influence of Byron’s Works
(1) Byron’s poetry has great influence on the literature of the whole world. Across Europe, patriots, painters & musicians are all inspired by him. Poets & novelists are profoundly influenced by his works.
The First Two Stanza
• It is described the situation of the poet’s departure from his love and his feeling at that time.

(4) The figure is, to some extent, modeled on the life & personality of Byron himself, and makes Byron famous both at home & abroad.
Characteristics of Byron’s Works (1) Although many of Byron’s works are debated by the critics, he is still one of the influential figures in the history of English literature.
(4) Byron’s influence has shown itself in the works of the Chartist Poets in England & the progressive poets in many other countries.”
(5) His poems show energy & vigor, and Romantic daring & powerful passion. Though he was a romantic, he had stronger ties to the 18th century writers than any of his contemporaries.
(3) The conflict is usually one of rebellious individuals against outworn social systems & conventions. Such a hero appears first in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, and then further developed in later works such as The Oriented Tales, Manfred, and Don Juan in different guises.
• Half broken-hearted / To sever for years ---- These two lines show the poet suffers agonies of his love’s departure.
• Truly that hour foretold / Sorrow to this ---- When he thinks back, he discovers that the coldness of the morning and her kiss predicts sorrow now --- this cold result.
