The book gives an example of a change at school. A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many students.Several teens are talking about this. Here, cheese means somethingimportant in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. But they find the cheese is gone. The mice realize that they can’t change what has happened and have to find more cheese. This means finding different dreams. The little people, however, can’t do this. They are afraid of change so they find no cheese. After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move in a new direction quickly. And now pilots can order their own “roadable” plane for just £ 127,000.The plane, which has fold-out wings that span 17.5 ft,has a range of flying distance of 460 miles and can be up to 115 mph.Back on the land,it can also travel at “highway speeds” in car mode(状态).Fuelling the 19 ft long plane couldn’t be simpler—you just drive it into a petrol station and fill it up. A spokeswoman said,“You can keep you ‘light-sport airplane’ in your garage. But because it needs a short runway to take to the air,you will have to drive to your local airport, fly up to 460 miles, land, and drive directly to your destination. You will always be ready to drive or fly."The spokeswoman added,“Never let bad weather change your trip. You call simply divert(改道)and continue on the ground until the weather clears.”There’s no risk to you—This is only the chance for you to be the first at your home field to unfold your wings and fly into the future.30.According to the text, the “roadable” plane.A.can fly at“highwayspeeds”in car modeB.is a kind of car with fold-out wingsC.is 19ft long and 17.5 ft wide insideD.can only travel on the highway31.We can infer that in the “Back to the Future” movies.A.there are some skillful pilotsB.pilots have no cars to driveC.pilots can’t afford a“roadable”planeD.cars can fly in the sky32.The last sentence of the text aims to.A.call for people to buy the“roadable”planeB.show people the use of the“roadable”planeC.tell people only the“roadable”plane can fly in the futureD.ask people to unfold their wings and fly into the futureDMy house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software. If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will giveyou an electronic PIN (个人身份号码)to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this informatio n to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制台), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. It is just a far more eco-friendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak(渗透) slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply. Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco-friendly “green” way to treat storm water. What’s more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery (机器) and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once native plants establish the necessary root system, they will require little care.Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. However, you don’t need to be a professionally environmental engineer to create a rain garden. As long as you’re ecoconscious homeowners, you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.4. Which of the following is NOT true for the function of rain gardens?A. They are good for living conditions.B. They increase pollution.C. They can beautify the community.D. They improve the environment.5. Which of the following is the eco-friendly function of rain gardens discussed in Paragraph 4?A. They can help reduce the pollution problem.B. They can keep the rain and storm water.C. They can be healthy for the people around.D. They can make the environment more beautiful.6. One of the main reasons why native plants are recommended is that ________.A.they cost less and are much easier to getB.they may attract local wildlife to comeC.they require little care from the local gardenerD.they are more used to the local growing conditions7. What do we know about rain gardens?A.They need little water after all the plants are planted.B.They may attract local birds and change the local climate.C.They usually need at least an inch of rainwater a week.D.They may reduce the water pollution problem by 70%.CShukri Noor, 12, arrived in Anchorage, Alaska, one year ago. The sixth grader and her family are fefugees (难民)from Kenya. “Since I didn’t speak English, it was hard to communicate with others,” Shukri said. “I had no friends.”“Anchorage receives about 130 refugees every year. Most are from Somalia. The rest come from Iraq, Sudan, Cuba, Central America, and other places. Like Shukri, many of the kids feel alone. They’re dealing with a lot of adjustments,” Katie Bisson says. She manages support for newcomer students in the Anchorage School District (ASD).At the Newcomers’ Center, the ASD offers a special program for students who are new to the U.S. The kids spend part of each day at the center and part of the day at their neighborhood school. At the center, the students study English and other subjects. The main goal is to help newcomers reach the point where they attend their neighborhood schools all day. “Until then, “ Bisson says, “ they have the support of being with kids like them, who are facing the same challenges.”Anchorage has a population of 300,000. Among the ASD’s 48,000 students, 98 languages are spoken. According to Bisson, the ASD’s newcomers program helps students understand a new culture so they can “start off on the right foot.”The Newcomers’ Center gives attention to middle school and high school students. For younger kids, the ASD offers a six-week summer program, which Shukri attended. “It helped me learn the language,” she says. “I played sports with kids after class, and I played math games with my classmates. I feel very comfortable now.”8. What was Shukri’s first reaction when she came to the U.S.?A. She felt lonely.B. She felt quite excited.C. She felt a little regretful.D. To enrich students’ life at neighborhood schools.D. To help newcomer students feel more at home.11. What is Shukri’s attitude to the ASD’s program?A. Worried.B. Doubtful.C. Uncaring.D. Supportive.DWhen you tidy your messy bedroom,it gets a lot easier to find things. Dreams may work the same way for a messy brain, helping you learn by organizing memories and ideas. To test how much dreams can help learning, Robert Stick gold had some students play a shape-fitting game called Tetris (俄罗斯方块) for a few hours and then go to sleep. Soon they were dreaming of falling Tetris shapes. Interestingly, the worst Tetris players had the most Tetris dreams and improved their game the most. Similar tests have shown the same results for all kinds of skills. As we dream, many important tasks are getting done. The brain decides what to keep and what to forget. It is connecting new experiences to older learning. In fact, the brain is learning all night long.Another important task of dreams may be to help us deal with emotions (情绪). At night, emotions are in the driver’s seat. People who have had an upsetting experience often dream about it afterward. Often the dream event changes somehow—another way the brain tries to make the memory less upset. So if your best friend moves away, you might dream that you’re the one who’s moving. In fact, dreams have a proven power to improve mood, and people who dream about what’s bothering them usually feel better sooner than those who don’t.Everybody dreams for a couple of hours every night—in the course of your life, you’ll spend about 25 years asleep and 6 years dreaming. There’s probably no single answer to the question why we dream, but there doesn’t have to be. One dream might help you remember your math facts, while another might lead to a new invention, or give you a fun, crazy story to tell your friends. It’s all in a night’s work for our busy, mysterious brains.12.Robert Stickgold’s test shows that________.A.games are useful for memoryB.dreams can help improve skillsC.players stop learning in dreamsD.tasks can only be settled through dreams13.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that________.A.dreams can get rid of sufferingsB.only drivers can deal with emotionsC.one may be less upset after a dreamD.dreams can copy what one experienced14.Which of the following does the author probably agree with?A.Dreaming does harm to one’s mood.B.Dreaming affects the quality of sleep.C.It’s hard to find out the secrets of dreaming.D.It’s not so important to know the cause of dreaming.15.What does the text focus on?A.Dreams and memories. B.Dreams and emotions.C.The benefits of dreams. D.The patterns of dreams.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and I on the other side.We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always put his opinions and codes of behavior on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on th e streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived ,I saw that the light was still on.I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous(蛮横的)words: “I can’t throw you away, let alone these old papers?”All the lights were off except father’s.Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping(蹑手蹑脚) up in my sleep and then tucking(掖,盖) me underneath the covers. This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love—it second to none.33. Decide which is the best order of the following according to what happened in the passage.a. I opened the door and entered the house.b. Sadly I ran out into the street.c. I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.d. I thought of my father’s kindness towards me.e. I walked about in the street without any aim.A. b, e, d, c, aB. b, e, a, c, dC. b, e, c, a, dD. b, e, c, d, a34. Why do you think the father often shouts at his son?A. perhaps the father is getting older and older.B. perhaps the son has already grown up.C. perhaps they never agree with each other.D. perhaps the father has got used to doing that.35.

This very British tradition is said to have been started around 1840 by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, England. During the long time between an early lunch and a very late dinner, she experienced what she called “a sinking feeling” at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. So she asked her serving girl to bring her a pot of tea, a little bread and butter and cake in her room. She found this arrangement made people feel so pleased that she began asking her friends to join her.High tea, a team often mixed with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. In the past the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had meals at about noon and after work between five and seven o’clock. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea. It was called “high tea” because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. How much do people enjoy the afternoon tea moment? As a famous writer named Henry James said, “There are few hours in life agreeable than the hour dedicated to (献给)the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”28. Who started the tradition of afternoon tea?A. From the beginning of my program, the HSK was the end goal of my Chinese learning this year. Luckily, I passed it and now I have one and a half months to go home and stay with my family. It’s really exciting to learn Chinese in an environment where I can study very fast. What’s more, I can see my own progress i n different ways. When I got here eight and a half months ago, I only knew a few of 150 words tested in the HSK 1.However, until now, I’ve taken and passed the 2500-word HSK5.I remember a time around January. I thought my Chinese had reached the point where I was comfortable in my day-to-day conversations. So my progress would slow down greatly. However, it turned out that I was totally wrong. Theconversations I can have now far surpass the ones I was having in January. Today I hit a landuage-learning landmark that was particularly exciting for me: I finished reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in Chinese. And it might not seem that exciting, but it was for me.because it’s the first full book I have read in Chinese. And it’s the third language I have read Harry Potter in.I am especially proud because I spent about seven months reading first 35 pages, but in the last month and a half, I managed to read about 150 pages. My next challenge is to read a novel written by a Chinese author, rather than one that I have read many time in English.Hopefully, I will be able to keep up my language learning progress over the next month and a half ,because I know I will probablynever have another opportunity to learn a language like this.Do you want to learn a new language?if you do,go to the country where people speak it and learn it from the locals.32.What do we know about the author when she first come to China?A. She didn’t want to learn Chinese.B.She took the HSK 1 immidediately.C.She was extremely poor at Chinese.D.She just knew 150 words tested in the HSK 1.33.Why does the author say she was totally wrong in Paragraph 3?A.Because she didn’t really know how to learn Chinese.B.Because she could learn better in a Chinese environment.C.Because she was uncomfortable in her day-to-day conversations.D.Because she made rapid progress in her day-to-day conversations.34.What does the author want to show by mentioning her experiece of readingHorry Potter?A. She could read books really fast.B.It’s good to le arn through reading.C.She learned the Chinese language quickly.D.The Horry Potter books are worth reading.35.What does the author’s Chinese learning experience mainly tell us?A.We should learn a language through travelling.B.Learning a second language is really important.C.The Chinese language is not very difficult to learn.D.The language-learning environment is important.第二节:据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AThe pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate — a 7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school. The giraffe is a huge sculpture (雕像) made by a local artist. The school's headmaster noticed the sculpture in the artist's garden as he drove past one day, and thought it would be perfect for his sch ool. “I knew everyone would love it,” he said, “because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes, and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write a letter to the artist, asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks —all for nothing! It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning, so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday — at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.”The artist, Tom Bennett, was a university professor (教授) of chemistry before he left that job in 2006 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. “I've always drawn pictures,” he said. “I can even remember doing it on my first day at school — I drew a horse. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don't think I succeeded.” Tom's first metalwork was a bicycle for two that he and his wife could go cycling on together. “It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said, “so I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead.”Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate. “We're going to hold a competition to give it a proper name,” said one girl. “Everyone likes the expression on its face, so perhaps that will give us some ideas.”21. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born. The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years. There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs (签名) for 23 hours. In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world's biggest country music festival. Now, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. As you can imagine, those who want to attend Fan Fair must plan ahead. The lobsters usually live along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. It is impossible that the lobsters could have made the 5,600-kilometre journey on their own. They were probably brought to Britain and then got away from containers. Some of the lobsters that were caught had elastic bands (松紧带) holding their legs shut, like lobsters that are kept in containers in stores or restaurants. Many may have been “set free” from some ships passing through the area. Sometimes passengers order a live lobster from a tank in the dining room and then ask the waiter to throw it overboard instead of cooking it.According to official records, 26 North American lobsters have been caught in waters off Great Britain since 1988. However, it is believed many more have been found but not reported. It is against the law to let North American lobsters come into British waters. If they settle down in European waters, it would be bad for the local lobsters. The two live in the same place and eat the same food. But North American lobsters are larger, stronger and more aggressive (好斗的) than European lobsters, and they produce young more quickly. As a result, they could take food and space away from the local lobsters, and from other types of shellfish that live in the same area. These lobsters may also carry diseases that could harm the local lobsters.29. Those unwelcome lobsters _____.A. could travel 5,600 km a day on their ownB. used to live in waters off Great BritainC. would soon disappear in British watersD. might have escaped on the way to Britain30. What can we learn about European lobsters?A. They are growing too fast to be kept under control.B. Shellfish often take away their food and space.C. They are easily harmed by North American lobsters.D. People become ill easily if they eat these lobsters.31. The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to _____.A. discussB. reportC. advertiseD. introduceDMost buildings are built to stand up straight, but these look as if they might fall over! The church tower of SuurhusenBuilt in 1450, the 27-metre-high church tower lies in Suurhusen, Germany. It was built in wet land on foundations of oak tree trunks (树干). When the land was drained (排水) later, the wood broke down, causing one side of the tower to be a little lower than the other. In 1975, the tower became a real hazard and people were not allowed to enter until the foundations were made strong again. The lean (倾斜) of the tower is now about five degrees. The Leaning Tower of PisaThe work of building the tower began in 1173, and was finally completed in 1372. In fact, it began to lean after just a couple of floors were built. And this condition continued in the centuries after its completion. The tower was finally closed to the public in 1990 after people failed to stabilize (使稳固) its foundations. In 2001, it was reopened after engineers removed soil from underneath its raised side. Now it leans just an angle of 3.97 degrees.Capital Gate of Abu DhabiCompleted in 2011, the Capital Gate tower in Abu Dhabi was designed to lean eighteen degrees. The building stands next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and contains, among other things, a fine hotel with wonderful views of the harbour. Also known as the leaning tower of Abu Dhabi, the tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city.Big Ben of LondonThe building leans 0.26 degrees to the northwest. This was mainly caused by the engineering projects (项目) that have been carried out in the ground below it sincethe late 1800s. The tower, which has been continuously open since it was completed in 1858, has nowhere near the lean of the Tower of Pisa and is still completely safe to enter.32. The underlined word “hazard” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.A. dangerB. churchC. castleD. treasure33. What can we learn about the Leaning Tower of Pisa?A. It didn't lean until ten years after its completion.B. It took almost two hundred years to complete.C. It was built on foundations of oak tree trunks.D. It has been open since it was completed.34. There are 10 provinces in the country but only one of these—Quebec is known as “French Canada”. This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.Canada left the British empire(帝国) in 1867 to become an independent country and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since. Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare. The same goes for traffic signs and menus, for example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you’ll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it’s almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带) of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签) and instructions in both languages. In Canada’s English speaking provinces, official bilingualism (双语) means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this program, they are taught most of their subjects in French. If a student begins the course in kindergarten (幼儿园) or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women. From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age. However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating (积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily. To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.47. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving . No ifs, ands or buts. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting (引用) a Biblical (圣经的) passage about husbands being thoughtful(体贴的)of their wives. Then he went on to say," Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well , for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said," That new yellow sweater looks great on you.""Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased, maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all the week and now she wants to stay with me. " We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed, I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose love. There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. Last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.“What’s the matter?” I asked her.“ Tom ,” se said in a voice filled with distress, “ do you know something I don’t?”"What do you mean?""Well...that checkup(体检) I had several weeks ago...our doctor...did he tell you something about me? Tom , you've been so good to me... am I dying?"It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing."No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You're not dying; I'm just staring to live."51In the first paragraph, "No ifs, ands or buts" probably means___.A. unnecessarilyB. unexpectedlyC. impossiblyD. unconditionally52. As a result, they could take food and space away from the local lobsters, and from o ther types of shellfish that live in the same area. These lobsters may also carry diseases that could harm the local lobsters.6. Those unwelcome lobsters _____.A. could travel 5,600 km a day on their ownB. used to live in waters off Great BritainC. would soon disappear in British watersD. might have escaped on the way to Britain7. They are easily harmed by North American lobsters.D. People become ill easily if they eat these lobsters.8. The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to _____.A. discussB. reportC. advertise (广告)D. introduceCMost buildings are built to stand up straight, but these look as if they might fall over! The church tower of SuurhusenBuilt in 1450, the 27-metre-high church tower lies in Suurhusen, Germany. It was built in wet land on foundations of oak tree trunks (树干). When the landwas drained (排水) later, the wood broke down, causing one side of the tower to be a little lower than the other. The tower was finall y closed to the public in 1990 after people failed to stabilize (使稳固) its foundations. This was mainly caused by the engineering projects (项目) that have been carried out in the ground below it since the late 1800s. The tower, which has been continuously open since it was completed in 1858, has nowhere near the lean of the Tower of Pisa and is still completely safe to enter.9. The underlined word “hazard” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.A. dangerB. churchC. castleD. treasure10. What can we learn about the Leaning Tower of Pisa?A. AWe went to the B.T Blackstone Library, not far from Lake Michigan, once a week. During every visit I found my way into a big reading room to touch a great and ancient globe sitting in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.On Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section. I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the shelf that she’d written a lot of books, but I didn’t know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything.A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.“It’s so dreadful to be poor” sighed Med, looking down at her old dress.“I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and ot her girls nothing at all” added little Amy, with an injured sniff.“We have got Father and Mother and each other.” said Beth contentedly from her corner.I had decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women.I wouldn’t put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo, the heroine. It seemed to me a shame tha t she wasn’t Black: then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, shehated acting ladylike, she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit(志趣相投的人).21. What can be learned about the author’s father?A. He was uncomfortable discussing politics with his children.B. He had strong feelings about the Civil Rights movement.C. He didn’t approve of most news covered on TV.D. He generally had a pessimistic world view.22. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that the author is most likely to agree______.A. books seem duller when read in libraries than when read at home.B. interesting books are often very dull in their first few paragraphs.C. novels are usually more interesting than nonfiction works.D. book titles can sometimes be misleading.23. The author quotes(引用) some lines from Little Women as part of a larger attempt to____.A. convey the impact of an unexpected discovery.B. d escribe a young reader’s sense of history.C. illustrate the author’s life.D. e xplain a child’s loneliness.24. The author lists several things about Jo primarily to______.A. challenge an interpretationB. highlight some differencesC. stress a comparisonD. develop a disapproving opinionBFor the business traveler who’s all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble. When you’re pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.◆Marriott Detroit AirportAnother option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.◆Hyatt Regency MinneapolisI happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meetsyou in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.◆Radisson LaCrosseThe Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.25. What does the word ‘infuriate’, in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. annoy.B. remind.C. amuse .D. impress.26. Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in?A. Marriott Detroit Airport and Yotel New York .B. Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse.C. Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson LaCrosse.27. Which hotel will send you a receipt by email?A. Yotel New York.B. Marriott Detroit Airport.C. Radisson LaCrosse.D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.28. What is the best title for the passage?A. Checking out the hotels will make you in troubleB. Three hotels that will make your life easierC. Try these hotels that offer you comfortD. Hotels for the travelersCThis year, the Paris museum turns forty. The museum —the Pompidou Center —has a secure place in the heart of Paris and in Parisians’ hearts. But it wasn’t always the case.“When it was first built, the reaction was one of disbelief,” said Serge Lasvignes, president of the Pompidou Center. “Le Monde newspaper wrote the museum’s construction brought shame on Paris, and city politicians thought their money had been totally wasted,”said Lasvignes. Critics said it looked like an oil refinery.France’s first museum entirely devoted to contemporary art saw the light of day thanks to the determination of one man —Georges Pompidou, an art lover who served as France’s president from 1969 to 1974.In 1971, he started an international competition to build the museum, originally known as the Centre Beaubourg. The winning team, which included three young architects from Britain and Italy, was completely unknown at the time. Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the twoarchitects who saw the project through, made the plan a reality.“The design took everyone by surprise. Someone said to Piano, ‘Your thing is terrible —with the escalator (自动扶梯) on the outside, it looks like a supermarket!’” Lasvignes added.Forty years later, the museum still tries to make culture available to everyone, Lasvignes said. He calls the Pompidou Center a museum like no other. “We are not only a museum,” he said. “We have concerts, debates, performances, a library …and everything flows together.”Pompidou felt putting up walls between different forms of art was harmful. “So we are a house of culture where people return again and again, ” Lasvignes said. The Pompidou Center is Europe’s biggest modern art museum; New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is the biggest in the world. “But the two museums have totally different strategies,”Lasvignes said. “The MoMA’s strategy is to collect masterpieces, and we try to represent an entire age”29. What was people’s attitude to the Pompidou Center originally?A. They were ashamed of it.B. They disliked it.C. They were curious about it.D. They paid little attention to it.30. It collects great masterpieces.B. It holds various cultural events.C. It is the world’s biggest art museum.D. It is particularly attractive to foreigners.DThe Sabi-Sand game reserve in South Africa is one of the richest wildlife regions in the African continent. Over 200 species of mammals and 350 different birds can be found in its vast plains, grasslands and forest. The reserve is a wonderful habitat for wildlife. Various measures are being put in place. These include dealing with the problem of erosion (土壤侵蚀). In 1996 the reserve had abnormally high rainfall. This could have been absolutely disastrous. However, erosion was successfully fought by means of gabion stretchers, which were wire baskets filled with rocks. Workers also used a lot of old aerial(航空的) photographs, which helped return the land to itsearlier state. This meant recreating open grassland areas to attract different types of animals. In addition to these measures, the reserve employs a wide range of local workers. Building staff accommodation of any sort would have made a big impact on the environment and would have gone against the objective of keeping the reserve as natural as possible. Instead, transport is provided so employees can live a normal life with their families outside the sea, and human impact is kept to a minimum.Visitors to the reserve spend about six hours a day in open vehicles, observing wildlife on game drives. They are accompanied by a ranger and a local tracker. Ranger and tracker together make a professional team. They are highly educated and have in-depth knowledge of the bush. Tourists can listen to ‘ranger-speak’ on the two-way radio and enjoy the moment on a game drive when a cheetah (猎豹) with her five cubs was lying in a sea of long yellow grass, her markings almost invisible. The Sabi-Sand reserve is a place where animals have no fear of humans. It is impossible to estimate the benefits of spending time in such an environment.33. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to ________.A. dealing with the problem of erosionB. the abnormal high rainfall in 1996C. various measures being put in placeD. the Sabi-Sand game reserve34. The staff of the game reserve ________.A. live inside the reserveB. live in poor accommodationC. are in touch with their familyD. take great photos of the reserve35. Visitors to the reserve ________.A. can walk to the open fieldsB. must have very good eyesightC. cannot go around the reserve aloneD. have two ways to enter the reserve第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

The first and earliest paper cutting was found in China 1,500 years ago. But this traditional art is at risk of disappearing now. Luckily, Vivian Woo, a Chinese immigrant in America, is trying to bring this art back to life. One Saturday in 2017,Ms. Woo held a paper cutting show at a shopping center near Washington. She got much fun and peace doing it. She hoped more people would enjoy it. Ms. Woo began to study the art of paper cutting as a 14 - year - old girl in her hometown in China. She said all the students at school had to learn paper cutting. But she had a deep love for it. So her teacher spent more time teaching her after class. Later, she won the second prize in a national painting and art competition. Ms. Woo went to America after she finished college in 2008. Soon after that, she took part in an activity to promote Chinese paper cutting. And then she was invited to show the art in many important activities. “It is important to promote this art to Americans or anyone who is interested in i t. Maybe it will make this art more popular.” Woo said. From the art of paper cutting, people can know about Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people’s life. Ms. Woo uses the art as a tool to show Chinese culture to people who know little about it. Chinese art is not only for Chinese, but also for people all over the world.25. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a way to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let illnesses in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many firsttime parents nervously try to warn(警告) their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.28. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because.A. they lived healthily in a dirty environmentB. they thought bath houses were to dirty to stay inC. they believed disease could be spread in public bathsD. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease29. Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?A. ApprovingB. AfraidC. CuriousD. Uninterested30. How does the passage mainly develop?A. By providing examplesB. By following the order of importanceC. By making comparisonsD. By following the order of time31. What is the author’s purpose in writ ing the passage?A. To present the change of views on dirtB. To stress the role of dirtC. To call attention to the danger of dirtD. To introduce the history of dirtDIn modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity.Others say thatcompetition is bad; that it sets one person against another; thatit leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on howwell they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.
