The sun lights the earth’s sky during the day. The moon appears to light our sky at night. But the sun and the moon are more than just big lamps (灯)!
Unlike the earth, the sun is not a planet. It is a star. The sun is made up of hot gases. The burning gases give heat and light. The moon is mostly rock and lava (熔岩). Even though it seems to give light to the earth, the moon does not make light.
Instead, the moon gets light from the sun. When we see a bright moon in a dark sky, we see the side of the moon that receives light from the sun.
The sun and the moon might appear to be the same size. But the sun is m uch bigger. Let’s put it another way: the sun is more than 100 times the size of the earth and it is about 400 times the size of the moon. The moon might seem bigger because it is so close to the earth. A trip to the moon is still a big trip, though. The moon is 238,000 miles away! People have made many trips to the moon. No one has ever visited the sun. One reason is that ▲ . It is over 93 million miles from the earth. No rocket could carry enough fuel to go to the sun. Another reason is that the sun is too hot. Inside the sun is even hotter. Even if a rocket could fly to the sun, it would burn up long before it arrived.

Last Friday was a special one for 12-year-old Lydia. Her sister Marcie was coming home from college. Lydia could hardly wait to go to the movies with her.
When Marcie walked into the door, the sisters greeted each other with a warm hug. Lydia hoped to hear all about Marcie’s college experiences. Unfortunately, Marcie had made other plans. Though Lydia was sad, she was sure that they would do something together the next day.
However, Marcie invited some friends over the next morning. When they arrived, Lydia was not her usual self. She sang loudly when they were talking. She even changed the channel while everyone was watching TV. Although Marcie did not say anything about Lydia’s behavior, she looked hurt. After lunch, Marcie and her friends went swimming. Lydia went into Marcie’s room. She noticed some letters that she had sent to Marcie and they reminded (使想起) her of how much she had enjoyed writing to Marcie. She wrote Marcie a letter apologizing (道歉) for her behavior and left it on Marcie’s bed.
Later that night, Marcie went into Lydia’s bedroom and said, “I’m the one who should be apologizing. I’m sorry that I’ve been so selfish. I didn’t realize how much I had hurt your feelings.” Marcie and Lydia hugged each other. “Let’s go and watch a movie tonight, shall we?” suggested Marcie. Lydia put on her clothes quickly. Marcie smiled and followed Lydia, remembering how much she had missed her best friend — her little sister.

People of long ago used to live in groups in caves or in jungles. They wandered from place to place to look for animals and food like wild fruits. Later people began to settle (安家落户) near rivers because they were sources of water, food, trade and transport.
They used river water for drinking, cooking and washing. Their animals also drank from these rivers. The rivers were full of fish. Some birds got their food from rivers, so they lived and laid eggs near rivers. People ate the fish, collected the birds’ eggs and caught the birds. Rivers also made good farmland for the early river settlers. The soil near rivers was usually good, so river banks and valleys were great places for farming. People started to grow their own crops. This means they could settle down in one place and they didn’t have to wander any more.
Besides the good soil, rivers were also used as a form of highway. Men began to use rafts (筏) and boats to carry their extra food. They sailed to other places to trade with the other settlers. So they became farmers as well as traders. When they began to travel up and down the rivers, they learned about the customs of the other settlers.
As trade and transportation grew, the population also grew. These river settlements grew into cities, and these cities became centers of great civilizations like those found in early Egypt, India and China.

Dear friends,
How time flies and I’ll graduate from the junior middle school soon.
Since I entered this school, I have been studying hard and have developed some good studying habits. As a result, I have been doing well in all the main subjects. During the past three years I have always been ready to help others, especially those having difficulty in their lessons.
However, I have a few regrets. I haven’t taken much exercise. I have seldom taken part i n social activities, either.
I hope you can learn something from my experiences and that you’re having a great time at school.
Yours,
Li Hua。
