High-value biochemicals and biomaterials
Our spearheads
1. Wood extractives - chemical characterisation bioactivity and utilisation 2. Wood polysaccharides - extraction and purification - chemical modification, characterisation, and utilisation - significance in papermaking 3. Analytical techniques for characterisation of wood and other biomaterial substances and fibres 4. Papermaking chemistry - wet-end interactions - de-resination and pitch control - chemistry and functions 5. Flow Cytometry
PhD projects
Development of Biocomposites from Plant Materials via Chemo-enzymatic Processes (CSC/GSCE) Wood lignins and tannins as renewable sources for novel adhesives and biocomposites (PapSat) Towards understanding of paper properties (PaPSaT) Distribution and interactions of fatty and resin acids in papermaking systems (PCC) Synthesis of GGM copolymers and their applications (AFR Luxembourg) Chemical modification of water-soluble spruce GGM (BioReGS) Environmentally sound extraction of biomasses (BioReGS/Metla)
Wood Chemistry • Wood substances • Process analyses • Fibre chemistry
Paper Chemistry • Interactions in fibre suspensions • Wet-end chemistry • Paper analyses
Our Mission
The ultimate goal of our research is to promote sustainable and multipurpose use of wood for fibre products and for highvalue specialty biochemicals (biorefinery). Our research should be: 1. Scientifically groundbreaking 2. Technically and industrially relevant and important 3. Deep, i.e., at the molecular level 4. Aiming at sustainable processes using natural products Our research area extends from wood and other renewable raw materials to products, including paper, process waters, effluents, and specialty biochemicals and biomaterials.
