In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the muuntains.In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders,dry and white in the sun,and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels.Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees.The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw thห้องสมุดไป่ตู้ troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves,stirred by the breeze,falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.

变得稀疏，枝干光秃了，这整个地区都变成湿淋 淋、黑黝黝，一派秋天死寂的景象。河上升起了 雾，山上飘着云，载重卡车在大路上泥浆飞溅， 士兵们满身是泥，他们在斗篷里湿漉漉的；他们 的步枪也是湿的。在他们的斗篷下，两个皮制的 子弹盒挂在他们腰带前面，灰色的皮盒沉甸甸的， 里面尽是一排排装着细长的6.5毫米子弹的子弹夹， 在斗篷下面鼓了起来，士兵们经过大路向前行进， 就像是怀了六个月身孕似的。
The plain was rich with crops;there were many orchards of fruit tress and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare.There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery.In the dark it was like summer lightning,but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming.
